2 CSU hosts new mexico in mw home opener Colorado State (8-4, 0-1 MW) welcomes New Mexico (4-8, 0-1 MW) to Fort Collins on Saturday. Tipoff at Moby Arena is set for 2 p.m. MT. Both teams are in search of their first league victory after falling on the road in their respective Mountain West openers. UNM continues its two-game road stretch after falling to last year's tournament champion, Fresno State (71-65) on Wednesday. Rising to the top last season after a seventh-place preseason projection, the Rams are predicted to finish first in the Mountain West this year. CSU returns four starters, including preseason all-conference selection Ellen Nystrom. Combo-guards Gritt Ryder and AJ Newton return with a year of experience together as court generals to lead the team for their senior seasons. The game will be broadcast live on AM 1410 KIIX or fans can hear a live stream on iheartradio. Matt Wozniak, now in his sixth season with the Rams, calls all the action. Live game video will also be available via the Mountain West Network at CSURams. com/videos. ABOUT NEW MEXICO Despite a rather unassuming record, the Lobos bring plenty of high-caliber playing experience to conference play, having challenged four top-25 teams over a 2.5-week span. UNM nearly pulled off one the biggest upsets in school history when it hosted then No. 1/6 Stanford in late November, falling The Lobos' most impressive stat is their defensive rebounding percentage. UNM grabs 69.3 percent of its defensiverebound opportunities, ranking third in the league below Boise State and CSU. New Mexico holds a plus-2.3 rebounding margin. Returning starters Antiesha Brown and Khadijah Shumpert lead the team in scoring, averaging 14.2 and 12.7 points per game, respectively. Shumpert also leads the team on the glass, averaging 7.1 rebounds per contest. New Mexico opened Mountain West action on the road Wednesday at Fresno State, falling A slow start plagued the team as it fell into 19-point deficits at the half and with 8 minutes remaining. The Lobos rallied, shooting 54.5 percent in the second stanza, but the hole was too big for them to crawl out of. Four players registered double figures in the contest, led by Brown with 19 points. The Lobos missed seven free-throw attempts, shooting 58.8 percent from the line. SERIES VS. THE Lobos Saturday's meeting will be the 72nd game between the two schools. The series dates back to Rams' inaugural season in CSU and New Mexico have met at least twice every season since 2000, when the Mountain West was formed. UNM has the advantage in the series, with a record overall. Colorado State has won the past two matchups in the series, completing its first regular-season sweep over the Lobos since 1998 last year. This will be head coach Ryun Williams' fifth matchup vs. New Mexico. He holds a 2-2 record vs. the Lobos. A WIN WILL... Stretch CSU's home court win streak to seven games. Last season the Rams won 13 home games in a row before falling to Southern Utah in the WNIT. That mark ranked as the fourth-best streak in program history. Earn Colorado State its third consecutive series win over New Mexico, improving to all-time. Be the second year in a row the Rams have won their Mountain West home opener. CSU is 1-1 under Williams and 5-5 in conference home openers over the past 10 years. LAST TIME AT NEW MEXICO - JAN. 25, 2014 In a game that came down to the final possession, the Colorado State prevailed, 62-57, over the Lobos, It was the team's first victory at The Pit since CSU completed its first season sweep, improving to 14-4 and 6-1 in the Mountain West, while New Mexico fell to 7-11 and 2-5. With the UNLV loss at Fresno State earlier in the day, the Rams gained sole possession of first place in the Mountain West for the first time. Gritt Ryder, who was one of two Rams in double figures, made two late free-throws where the rest of the team struggled, and then an enormous three-pointer with less than a minute remaining. The Lobos had the ball on the final possession and got off two three-point attempts to try and tie, but neither would fall. Nystrom corralled the rebound and dished it off to AJ Newton, who put the game out of reach at the line. Straying from the norm, CSU struggled at the charity stripe, especially in the first half, converting just one-of-seven attempts. The mental woes continued the rest of the way, and the team finished the night shooting just 47.8 percent from the line (11-23). AJ Newton was on fire from deep early on, shooting 3-3 from beyond the arc in the first frame. Her first miss was at the halftime buzzer when she threw up a desperation attempt. She was the first to 10 points for either squad and finished the day with a career-high 24 points and a team-high four assists. Quick Facts General Information Location...Fort Collins, Colo. 3 Ryder tallied her third double-double on the year, this time in the points and rebounds columns. She registered 15 points and a career-best 10 boards. Sam Martin missed a few minutes toward the end of the first stanza because of foul trouble. The senior was slapped with her third violation with 15 minutes to play in the second half, and her fourth at the 9:35 mark, but it wouldn t limit her time on the court. She played 30 minutes of the contest, never fouling out with nine points and six off the glass. Caitlin Duffy also played a real aggressive game, fighting for numerous loose balls and rebounds. She recorded eight points and six boards on the evening. Newton was tasked with guarding the Lobos leading scorer, Antiesha Brown. Averaging 13.3 points this season, she was held to just seven. Sara Halasz, who has been leading the team in scoring in league action, was held to just two points. Last time out Colorado State opened Mountain West action on a sour note, falling at Boise State, 75-65, Wednesday at Taco Bell Arena. Down by six at the half, Boise State (9-3, 1-0 MW) increased its lead to seven points before Colorado State (8-4, 0-1) used a couple of small runs to tie the game with 8 minutes remaining. Boise State retook the lead but CSU kept it close until the Broncos leading scorer, Deanna Weaver (17) buried her fifth three-pointer of the day with just under four minutes to play. CSU then went ice cold, suffering a scoring drought over a 3:14 stretch, converting just 2-of-10 baskets when it mattered most. After a tight battle in the early goings, the Broncos went on a three-point tear midway through the first frame, burying six shots from downtown over a 5-minute span. They built their lead up to 11 points before Hanne Mestdagh halted the Broncos run with a trey of her own. Boise State closed the half 0-of-6 from the field, suffering a 3.5-minute drought, allowing the CSU to cut the lead to six points by the halftime buzzer. The Broncos nearly doubled the Rams effort on the glass through the first 20 minutes, outrebounding Colorado State 20 to 11. Boise State finished the 40 minutes with a rebounding margin of plus-14, scoring 10 second-chance points off 15 offensive boards, while the Rams, who lead the conference in defensive rebounding percentage at a 70.4 percent clip, corralled just 63.4 percent of the their defensive-board opportunities. Elin Gustavsson crawled out her recent scoring slump, registering double figures for the first time since her career performance at Colorado on Nov. 29. She tallied a team-high 14 points on the day, adding six rebounds, a block and a steal. Ellen Nystrom found her stride late, scoring five consecutive points for the Rams before the team went cold. She totaled 11 points and five rebounds in the matchup. Gritt Ryder and Emilie Hesseldal were back on the court after missing time due to injuries. The two both played significant minutes before fouling out. Ryder was whistled for her fifth penalty after recording 12 points, seven assists and five rebounds. Hesseldal exited the contest after tallying four points and three boards. CLOSING IN ON a career MILESTONe Now in his 20th season as a head coach, Ryun Williams just earned his 300th career victory at the NCAA level. The Rams' leader is now one of four coaches in the Mountain West with at least 300 wins on his/her resumé. He is now closing in on another milestone in the campaign. Prior to taking over the reins at Colorado State, Williams led programs at South Dakota, Wayne State and Sheridan College. Six victories away from his 50th win at Colorado State. Williams could become the second fastest coach to reach 50 wins in program history. Only two coaches have reached 50 victories in their first three seasons at Colorado State: Tom Collen and Chris Denker. 14 matchups away from his 500th career game at the NCAA level. Ryder: Two-Time MW Player of the Week Senior Gritt Ryder was named Mountain West Player of the Week twice during the non-conference season. It was the first time a player from Colorado State earned the honor multiple times in a single season since Kim Mestdagh did so in The Rams' floor general shined in the first round of the Omni Hotels Classic against former conference foe TCU. She tied a career high with 25 points and organized the Rams with poise from the point guard position against an athletic Horned Frogs team with switching defenses. Ryder was one of two players to reach double figures in each game during the week, adding 11 points in a championship-round, double-overtime battle at Colorado. In the previous week vs. Illinois State she led the team to erase what was an 11-point deficit en route to a win over the Redbirds. The Denmark native scored a game-high 22 points, burying a career-high six three-pointers. Ryder shot.750 from beyond the arc. Wells' Turnover streak Victoria Wells has not committed in a turnover in nearly 3.5 games, committing her last miscue at the 15:38 mark of the second half vs. BYU on Dec. 6. The junior currently ranks second in the country in assist-to-turnover ratio (4.22). She has just nine turnovers through 10 games this season. MINUTES STREAK Senior Gritt Ryder played nearly every minute over five-game stretch for CSU, ending her streak on Dec. 9 vs. South Dakota Mines after 206 consecutive minutes on the court. Junior Jamie Patrick also joined the 40-minute club after the Dec. 21 game vs. Cal Poly. No player has done that for the Rams for even one game since Sara Hunter did so during her senior season vs. Utah on March 5, Hunter tallied 14 games playing every minute for Colorado State during her junior season, including a career-high four consective matchups from Jan. 20-Feb. 4 in Rams from downtown Colorado State ranks 21st in the country in three-point field goals per game. A complete look at the MW poll and individual accolades can be found on page 5 of this release. CSU garnered 21 of the 28 first-place votes available, and received 276 points overall. Boise State ranked second with 241 points and four first-places votes, while Wyoming rounded out the top three at 235 points and three first-place votes. This is just the second time in the history of the Mountain West that Colorado State was predicted to win the league title. The Rams also received a first-place projection prior to the season, a forecast that they lived up to. Nystrom gets preseason nod Returning for her sophomore campaign, Ellen Nystrom earned a spot on the five-person preseason all-mountain West team. Last year she became the most decorated CSU athlete in a single season with four all-conference awards: co-freshman of the year, second-team all-mw, all-defensive team and allfreshman team. The Lulea, Sweden, native returns after leading the team last year in rebounds (6.6) and steals (43), while ranking second in assists (112) behind Rams' point guard Gritt Ryder. Williams' Contract Extension Colorado State University and women's basketball head coach Ryun Williams finalized a new five-year contract over the summer that will keep the Rams' leader at the helm through at least the season. Williams guided the Rams to a 25-8 record (.758) and the MW regular season championship last season, a dramatic improvement from an (.367) record in his first season at Colorado State. That improvement ranked as the third-best turnaround in the country, when factoring increase in winning percentage among teams with at least 20 wins last season. CSU on WBCA Academic Top 25 Team Honor RoLL The Colorado State women's basketball team was recognized with a spot on the Women's Basketball Coaches Association Academic Top 25 Team Honor Roll. The Rams are one of the top schools academically at the NCAA DI level, ranking No. 22 with a grade-point average. This is the first time Colorado State has made the list, dating back to the season, when the WBCA first recognized the honor roll. CSU was the only school in the Mountain West and one of three Colorado schools to make the list this year, joining Northern Colorado which came in at No.3 (3.614) and Denver at No. 14 (3.498). Missouri-Kansas City took the top spot with a GPA. Up next... Colorado State is back on the road, this time against the team picked to finish third in the league this season, Wyoming. 14 ryun williams South Dakota (1992 and 1997) Third Season at CSU 20th Season Overall ( ) 14 Ryun Williams, a 20-year coaching veteran, just completed his second season as the head coach of the Colorado State women's basketball program and was named Mountain West Coach of the Year following an outstanding program turnaround. Williams led the Rams from (.367) in his first season to 25-8 (.758) in That improvement ranked as the third-best turnaround in the country, and is the best in program history. The WBCA awarded Williams with the 2014 Russell Athletic/WBCA NCAA DI Regional Coach of the Year award. Tasked with repairing what has been nearly a decade of sub-par results, Williams brought eight new faces to the Rams' roster in his second season at the helm. The team quickly realized it had an irrefutable chemistry, which resulted in eight- and 10-game win streaks, totaling 17 wins in 18 games, skyrocketing them to the top of the Mountain West standings and their first regular-season championship in 12 years. The Rams, who were picked to finish seventh in Mountain West preseason poll, more than doubled their win total from the previous season, producing the best record in 13 years, and the third-most victories in program history. The team earned a program-record 10 all-conference awards to six players, in addition to a MW Coach of the Year nod for the second-year coach. The Rams also received their first postseason invitation in 10 years, with a trip to the WNIT. With over 20 seasons in coaching, including 19 as a head coach, Williams has compiled an impressive career record, with stops at South Dakota ( ), Wayne State College ( ) and Sheridan College ( ), leading his squads to seven campaigns of 20 or more victories, five postseason berths and two conference championships. Before coming to Colorado State, Williams was South Dakota's head coach for four seasons. He led the Coyotes to a highly successful stretch during their transition to Division I competition, and helped them become one of the nation's premier defensive teams. A staple of the Coyotes under Williams has been defense, and that was no exception in They ranked second nationally in blocks per game (7.3), eighth in field-goal defense (33.2) and 12th in scoring defense (52.3), leading the Summit League in all three categories. The Coyotes qualified for the WNIT for the first time ever last season as a Division-I program, which was their second straight postseason berth after competing in the Women's Basketball Invitational in South Dakota finished with a No. 97 rank in the RPI, the second-highest of any Summit League team and the highest mark in school history. Prior to arriving at USD in 2008, Williams spent 10 seasons at Wayne State, building that program into a perennial contender in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference. Williams took over a program that had won just 13 games the previous two seasons and turned it into an NCAA tournament team. His team's recorded 20 wins or more in three of his final four seasons and made appearances in the NCAA Division II North Central Region tournament in two of the last three seasons. While at Wayne State, he compiled a record (.632) and became the winningest women's basketball coach in school history. In , he guided the Wildcats to a 21-9 record, which included a trip to the NCAA Tournament. In the first round of the North Central Region he led his team to an upset of North Dakota for the first win in the NCAA tournament in the school's history. In , Williams took Wayne State to its first-ever trip to the NCAA tournament, as the team notched its best season in school history by going They were 13-1 in NSIC play and won the NSIC tournament to earn automatic berth to the NCAA tournament. That season Williams was named the NSIC Coach of the Year. Williams' players have received plenty of postseason recognition. He has had players named WBCA All-America honorable mention, NSIC Player of the Year and NSIC Tournament MVP. Two players earned NSIC Defensive Player of the Year honors, two won the Dodie Martin and two were named the league's newcomers of the year. Before taking over at Wayne State, Williams was the women's head coach at Sheridan College (Wyo.) for three seasons. While there he was named the Wyoming Conference Coach of the Year twice and was the Region IX Coach of the Year. In 1993 he began his head coaching career at Sheridan when he served as the volleyball head coach and men's basketball assistant coach. In his time as the head coach of the volleyball program he put together a record. In 1995 Sheridan went 42-8, won the Region IX title and finished fifth at the junior college national tournament. Williams garnered Wyoming Conference and Region IX Coach of the Year honors in 1994 and Sheridan is also where Williams began his collegiate playing career. He played two seasons at Sheridan, where he was an All-Region IX player as a sophomore. In addition he was a two-time All-Wyoming Conference performer and a two-time academic all-conference selection. He then transferred to South Dakota where he earned All-NCC honors after leading the nation in free throw percentage at 91.2 percent. Williams was also named academic all-conference as a junior and senior. As a high school senior at Campbell County High School, he was named Mr. Basketball for the state of Wyoming in A native of Gillette, Wyo., Williams earned his associate's degree from Sheridan in 1990, his bachelor's degree from South Dakota in 1992 and his master's degree from South Dakota in Williams and his wife, Lyndy, have two daughters, Natalie and Emily.
