Billy Donovan Player Development If you're not doing a skill session in practice, you are not getting up perimeter shots or executing post moves Does skill workouts before practice for 30 to 40 minutes, 3 times a week Players come in and work on their game tells players to be selfish during this time Chart every shot in individual instruction and post the totals for the day and season Posting stats does 2 things 1. As a coach I didn't take any of those shots 2. Coaching staff is here to help you get better Shows players that they may need to be more selective in their shot selection Makes shooting competitive and adds an element of pressure Players shoot at game speed with shots being charted keeps players from going through the motions Always want players passing balls in shooting drills, not coaches Get players to pass the ball to the inside shoulder to lead the shooter into the shot Focus on passer getting the ball to the shooter as quick as possible Beat the pass as the shooter feet ready, set to shoot before the ball arrives Going to the ball, he teaches to pivot off the foot closest to the basket Going away from the ball, he lets players use the footwork that they are most comfortable with Wants players to constantly be shooting while fatigued On a shot fake, the ball should come to the chin (it shouldn't go above the head) and the player should stay low Wants to shoot a 3, post feed, or action to the rim Does not want to shoot shots with a foot on the 3 point line or just inside the 3 point line has someone chart these shots in practice so players are aware of their footwork 3

Tom Crean Guard Development Long-term memory for the average human beings is 3 days Motivation is temporary Book recommendations 1. The Talent Code Daniel Coyle 2. The Little Book of Talent: 52 Tips for Improving Your Skills Daniel Coyle Things Every Presenter Needs to Know About People Susan Weinschenk Head Coach and staff need to have intensity and bring enthusiasm every day 3 Things Players Need to Bring to Practice Every Day 1. Mentally prepared to work 2. Energy 3. Come in to compete HARD WORK IS A GIVEN! Need players to feel that it hurts way more to lose than it feels good to win Guards are separated by vision If you can't see, you can't win Have to be able to play low, drop shoulders, and put ball in front Players should start in a staggered stance Believes you should pick dribble moves that are most game like and that all of your players can do to use in drills Work on being low and explosive Keep head up and be explosive, drop shoulder and drive through contact, get ball in front, and lead foot going at the rim To prepare our guys to play at the next level we have to improve our teaching Trying to develop feet and hands, but also need to develop shoulders Players need to be able to drop both shoulders and drive through contact with their head up The quality of the pass leads to the quality of the shot. - Pete Carill It doesn't matter if you are open, it matters if the ball can see you. When attacking off the dribble... down the middle see the whole road from the side see from the outside, in 9

Mick Cronin Defense and Dealing With Today's Players Tells players that the most important thing is mental state Mental state is everything It is important for coaches to communicate with players on a daily basis People on the outside of the team are constantly trying to tear the team apart by criticizing the coach and other players on the team You have to constantly recruit your own players Let them know that you are talking with college coaches and players and/or NBA coaches and players Make sure that your players know that you care about their individual improvement Your players have to understand why teams win and why teams lose Free throws are the biggest difference in winning and losing Turnover margin is the second biggest difference in winning and losing Have to sell your team on how to not lose before you can talk to them about winning If talent is equal, the difference is layups and free throws 3 Most Important Things to Stop on Defense 1. Layups/Dunks none 2. Free Throws less than Wide Open 3's (from their best shooters) less than 5 If you do all 3, you'll win If you do 2 of the 3, you'll win a lot of games It's not about being right, it's about winning. It's about keeping your job so your daughter can go to college wherever she wants. - Brian Kelly Have to sell guys on why you are doing what you are doing Must let players know when you are wrong can't always put the blame on the players Must give players a couple of things to do to improve They need to be doable You can't overload them with too many things You have to let them know that you want to make them better players because if they are better the team will be better and win more games 14
In little league baseball, everyone plays Ask the team if they want to play little league baseball or if they want to win If you want to win, we will play the best players Coach Cronin makes all of his decisions based on Samantha Jean Cronin because she wants him to keep his job. She gets a pizza at every game. Tells players not to do anything that will force him to choose between them and Samantha Jean Sits players down and has them look around the gym and find all of the signs lit up in neon lights If you don't like it, there's the exit. It's all lit up so you know where to go. They don't say Please Stay! If you don't play hard and listen, you are not going to play Need to do 3 Things to Play 1. Play defense 2. Take care of the ball 3. Be in the right spot Winners know why they win You've got to be able to win when you don't make shots. - Bob Huggins When you make shots and play defense, you are going to win Bad Fouls 1. Jump shooter feet from the basket 3. When your team is in the 1 and 1 penalty 4. Slap down from the side when you get beat on the drive 5. Fouling a guy without the ball Have to run best shooters off the line, cannot let them catch and shoot in rhythm Don't turn little Johnny into Lebron make players make shots In a mismatch from a switch, he teaches play defense like they play offense Fight around the man like you are trying to catch the ball Keeps guards from grabbing the big man and getting called for the foul 15
Belief vs Trust The Great Luigi was going to push a wheelbarrow across a tightrope through high winds over Niagra Falls. He asked the crowd, Do you believe I can do it? Everyone said, Yes because they wanted to see him do it. He successfully walks across the tightrope to the other side. Then he walks back across the tightrope to the crowd. The crowd goes wild. He asks them, Do you trust me? I need a volunteer to in the wheelbarrow and I will do it again. No one volunteered. Need to get players to believe in you and trust you Need to know what your players want and and what you need to give them to get them there Have to find a way to win with your guys and get them to buy in Defensively they work on avoiding bad fouls and contesting 2's Don't lose a game on a layup/dunk or free throws in the final seconds Don't act on emotion it's chess, not checkers Prepare what you are going to say to the team at the end of the game regardless of the result (good win, ugly win, tough loss, blowout) Know who you are playing next and get their mental state ready for it You have have the hearts and minds of your players to combat the people recruiting against you every day 16
Kevin Eastman Establishing Terminology The best in any business are life-long learners 2 Things Kill Workouts 1. Boredom on coaches 2. Fatigue Fatigue demands fundamentals. The more tired we get, the more fundamental we have to play. Steve Nash: Pick and roll is more about bodies and eyes then speed and being fast. The more you can do drills at game speed, the more you'll be ready at game time Players are taught by coaches, but players are made by themselves The true work for the Celtics to win the 2008 NBA championship took place in an average gym in Waltham, MA Ray Allen does pre-game shooting with the lights completely dark, just cares about having a ball and a rim Docism - It's not about being right, it's about getting it right. What time zone do you operate in? 1. Spare Time: you won't do it 2. Part-Time: do what you want to do before you do what you need to do 3. Full-Time: you give everything, every practice 4. All of the Time: best players do the unrequired work KG had a bad game defensively. The next day in practice he is working hard on his defense in the shell drill to make sure it doesn't happen again. Doc is worried that KG needs rest so he subs Leon Powe into the drill for KG. KG won't leave the floor at first, but eventually gives in and goes out of bounds. The drill continues on the floor and KG is in a stance, moving with the ball, and talking on defense. The ball moves to the other end of the floor and KG sprints down the floor and continues playing defense on the other end. The best players don't want to leave the floor. In order to get buy in, you must get believe in. 1. Trust Needs time, consistency, and proof If you say you are going to do something, do it 2. Truth Must be able to live it 17
Must be able to do it Must be able to take it 3 C's for Championship Teams 1. Character We need character, not characters 2. Chemistry Do you have these 4 relationships? 1. Players like, respect, and trust each other 2. Players like, respect, and trust the coaches 3. Coaches like, respect, and trust the players 4. Coaches like, respect, and trust each other 3. Culture Champions have a high level culture and live it every day If it is breached, you must confront it right away When the shit hits the fan, turn the fan off. Success Ingredients 1. Be there before you get there Ray Allen simulates hitting shots at the end of the game by having coaches pass to him and count down 3, 2, 1 Kevin practiced his talk before the clinic 2. Have healthy fears Kevin is afraid of not having enough good useable stuff to give coaches at the clinic 3. Big eyes, big ears, and a small mouth Use your eyes to observe and learn Use your ears to listen and learn Do not talk a lot it keeps you from learning from others and exposes how little you know Kevin is successful because he is the best at these three things 4. Read headlines and ads They give great teaching points Bridgestone, We make each tire one tire at a time. Kevin tweaked this for Ray Allen, You don't make 500 jump shots, you make one jump 18
shot at a time with perfect form. 5. Use your small mouth to ask good questions Master the...bilities 1. Responsibility Execute the role you have been given Sign in Patriots locker room, Do your job completely! 2. Accountability Take ownership of your actions 3. Dependability Can we count on you to do that? 4. Sustainability To play at the highest level, you have to be able to sustain your skills 5. Availability Have to be able to play/practice every day Paul Pierce and Kevin Garnett do not miss practice unless an injury physically keeps them from practicing 6. No one in this room has arrived Michael Jordan: Success doesn't stop once you get there. Phil Knight: Nike has no finish line. Entitlement or Investment? 1. Entitlement Titles are never won through entitlement Players of entitlement lead the pack in talk are at the bottom of do 2. Investment Kevin reads 2 hours a day From 10/1 to 6/1, Kevin watches 1 DVD that helps him get better There are 24 hours in a day and there is such a thing as 4:00 am, make it a priority to improve your craft 3 Things You Should Do 1. Show Up 2. Shut Up 3. Keep Up 19
Young players get on the floor through invisible plays Coaching takes place in offices, leadership takes place in the locker room Knowledge is quickness this is why scouting reports are important Communicate on defense Gives defense a head start Wakes up a disengaged defender Intimidates the offense No my turn shots Chart shooting turnovers Quick shot No offensive rebounding Worst shooter Do you have don't know players or don't care players Can live with players who don't know, this can be fixed with coaching Can't live with players who don't care 3 Musts of Coaching 1. Put out fires 2. Put gas in your tank 3. Refocus the lens Preparation trumps pressure Did I do enough? Am I ready? Are you a team of get or give? You are at your best when you give In your mind who wins, doubt/fear or knowledge/belief? The best coaches do not take counsel of their fears Fear leads to hesitation Championship Teams Have to Get Past 1. Mad didn't get enough not shots, selfish 2. Sad feeling sorry for yourself, selfish 3. Hard hard is what makes you better, get past it 20
4 Things You Control 1. System 2. Culture 3. Players 4. Preparation Budget your bitches Bring the stuff to your bosses that helps you win, not the stuff that makes you feel better Before a game Doc Rivers already knows what the next practice is so he doesn't decide on the emotions of the game Coach the first game in absolutes and adjust along the way Emphasize the same things at the end of the year as the beginning If they were important enough to devote time to at the beginning of the season, they are still important at the end Don't fail the plan, let the plan fail you follow the scouting report We don't want to be lucky, we want to be good Do you a what if coach on your staff? Someone who thinks about potential scenarios Someone who plays devils advocate with the head coach Bobby Knight: We must be creative masters of the overkill. That is what coaching is about. Celtics: Once practice starts, everything counts! Point guards must see the entire floor for the entire game Coach in bullets, not paragraphs Tell best players to see the action, not to force the action The E Equations Energy + Effort from Everyone Everybody, Every Play, Every Day Grind don't get bored with the process, you need it if you want to win the championship 2 E's for Game Coaching 1. Emotion 10% of game coaching 2. Evaluation 90 % of game coaching Doc Rivers: I might be wrong, but this is what I see/hear. Best Celtics teams see the the game the same as Doc 21
These are our scorers; you don't take shots from them, you get shots off of them Need antenna guys who can recognize that there is a problem The drills you do in practice should show up in the game The Dreaded S's 1. Shots 2. Stats 3. Start them 4. Salaries If the mental game ever met up with the physical game, you could be an all-star Great way to frame criticism Doesn't attack player, lets them know you see their potential Roles Role players think you think they suck Give role players stats they can reach without screwing your offense up Roles for Bigs 1. 1 pass ahead for a fast break bucket per half 2. 1 offensive rebound put back per half 3. 3 free throws, make 2.He who angers you, owns you If you change your habits, you can change your limits. If you change your limits, you can change your life. If you can change your life, you can fulfill your dreams. 22
Stan Van Gundy Basketball Thoughts Take 1 or 2 things you see at the clinic and put it into what you already do A clinic should not change your overall philosophy Beyond clinics you have to go out and watch people practice Coaching isn't what you know, it is what you can get your players to do on the floor If you want to know if a coach is a good communicator with his players, watch his team play Do they play hard, smart, and together? If they do, he is a hell of a coach You have to go to battle every day If you don't like confrontations, you can't be a good coach Players go as hard as you push them every day You have to make your players reach your standards every day The easier you are to please, the worse your team is Book recommendation Mindset by Carol Dweck Dr. Dweck is a professor at Stanford When she starts the semester with her grad students, she tells them that they must be pretty smart because they got into this grad program at Stanford Then she asks them, Do you want me to kiss your butt or make you better? Players win games Do not confuse talent, speed, and quickness with who will win you games JJ Redick and Udonis Haslem aren't the biggest/fastest, but they help their teams win Don't mistake activity with achievement. - John Wooden Don't confuse off the court character with on the court character Need basketball character to win Tough Smart Competitive Unselfish Put the team first 23
The complementary guys must be low mistake guys Low turnovers Don't screw up plays Don't screw up defensive rotations Put best 2 or 3 guys on the floor with 2 lowest mistake guys Get best guys on the floor regardless of position Make sure your best players are on the floor when the other team puts their subs in Make cutting down a fouling a priority You can't be good at everything You want to be good at the things that happen the most 2 Considerations for Building Your Philosophy 1. How many high percentage shots can you get? Highest percentage shots 1. Foul shots 2. Layups 3 feet and in 3. Open 3's 4. Mid-range (anything between 3 feet and the 3 point line) 2. How many shots can you get? Things that control the number of shots 1. Rebounding 2. Turnovers Things You Can Control 1. Getting back on defense 2. Fouls big men should never foul anyone below the shoulders 3. Box Out 4. Screen 5. Turnovers What can you teach? Need to ask yourself two questions 1. What do I know? 2. What do I have time for? 24
Want to be good 1. Defensively 2. Rebounding emphasis on defensive rebounding 3. Taking care of the ball What are your rules on getting back on defense? 1 and 2 are back on the release of the shot dead sprint to the other end of the floor 4 and 5 go to the boards unless they are above the free throw line 3 makes a decision to crash or sprint back Match up when you get back You don't have a man in transition How do you play against teams that dominate you physically? (strength and/or quickness) Use pick and roll to start your offense Now they can't deny and they have to rotate Greece was very successful at doing this against Team USA in the Olympics Cutting down on turnovers Don't play the guys who turn it over Be prepared to face pressure Don't leave your feet to pass Pass and catch everything with 2 hands 25

Fran Fraschilla Building a Half-Court Offense From Scratch Gordon Chiesa 5 Characteristics of Great Coaches 1. Teaching Skills 2. Communication Skills 3. Organizational Skills 4. Motivational Skills 5. Under Pressure Skills Crisis Management Try not to be great at everything Know your personality and be good at 2 or 3 things What is your vision for your team this year? Steven Covey: Begin with the end in mind. Lombardi spent 8 hours breaking down 1 play, the Packer Sweep, at a coaches clinic showed the importance of knowing what you teach Kept an index card on his desk, Prepare practice each day like Vince Lombardi and Hubie Brown are coming to observe. Didn't take water breaks, you get water when you are not in a drill Are you making as many pressured decisions as you can in non-pressured times? Who is playing when you're down 8? Timeout organization Fraschilla had the point guard in front of him in, the wings on his left, and the bigs on his right with their backups standing right behind them Do you have what if meetings? If you're a set play team, you can't be a motion team If you're a motion team, you can't be a set play team Coach Fraschilla's Offensive Philosophy Run to get easy baskets, get into secondary break if fast break is not there 70% set plays 30% motion (keep motion simple) 28
Do you have an offensive rebounding philosophy? M.I.T. Sloan Sports Analytic Conference found that offensive players rebound 1. 40% of all rebounds within 2 feet 2. 22% of all rebounds from 2 feet to 8 feet 3. 20% of all rebounds from 8 feet to the 3 point line Design your offense with the miss in mind Do you have a screening philosophy? Are you setting big/little screens? Are you setting little/big screens? Can you run a favorite play from multiple formations? Can you add wrinkles to your favorite plays? Do you have a dribble penetration offense? If a guard drives baseline, he should have the following options 1. Corner drift 2. Weak side wing 3. Big at the front of the rim 4. Safety Average pick and roll man worries about his man Good pick and roll man worries about the screener's man Great pick and roll man worries about the help Teach players reads on pick and roll before you get into a continuity set Guards should go slower in pick and roll to give time to read the defense When big shows hard, swing the ball immediately and hit the big man slipping to the rim When big shows soft and over, make sure you maintain contact with the screener, hesitate, and attack 2-on-1 with the big man rolling Pick and Roll Continuity is a great delay game in high school Give your players as many entries as possible in a continuity set 29
