1 2002 PAC-10 TOURNAMENT PAC-10 TOURNAMENT REDUX On October 23, 2000, the Pac-10 CEO Group/Council voted to institute a Pac-10 men's basketball tournament. The Staples Center in Los Angeles has been awarded the tournament for a six-year period, beginning with the season. The Tournament, scheduled for Thursday, March 7 through Saturday, March 9, will bring together the top eight teams in the Pac-10's final regular season standings. The Tournament champion will be crowned on Saturday afternoon and will receive the league's automatic berth in the NCAA Tournament. (The Pac-10 CEO Group/Council also approved a Pac-10 women's basketball tournament. The women's tournament includes participation by all 10 institutions and is scheduled for Friday, March 1 through Monday, March 4 at Mac Court on the University of Oregon campus). FOX Sports Net, the Pac-10's television partner, will broadcast the quarterfinals on Thursday and the semifinals on Friday. Saturday's championship game will be broadcast by CBS-TV. A postseason conference tournament will not be a new venture for the Conference of Champions as the league previously held a postseason tournament from The original Pac-10 Tournament was inaugurated following the season at UCLA s Pauley Pavilion where the host UCLA Bruins captured the first Pac-10 postseason title. Subsequent Tournaments were held at Arizona s McKale Center (1988), the Great Western Forum in Los Angeles (1989), and Arizona State s University Activity Center (1990). Arizona's Sean Elliott was tabbed the Most Outstanding Player in 1988 and again in 1989 as he led the Wildcats to a pair of Pac-10 crowns. The seedings and pairings shall be determined upon completion of regular season play on Saturday, March 2. The won-lost percentage record of the teams in regular season Conference play will determine tournament seedings. The team with the best won-lost percentage in Conference play will be seeded #1, the next best won-lost percentage in Conference play will be seeded #2, and so forth through all the seeds. Tie-Breakers: Tie breaking procedures for determining which eight teams will participate in the men s tournament and all tournament seeding will follow the following procedure: 1. Two-team tie a. Results of head-to-head competition during the regular season. b. Each team s record vs. the team occupying the highest position in the final regular standings, and then continuing down through the standings until one team gains an advantage. When arriving at another group of tied teams while comparing records, use each team s record against the collective tied teams as a group (prior to that group s own tie-breaking procedure), rather than the performance against individual tied teams. c. Won-lost percentage against all Division I opponents. d. Coin toss conducted by the Commissioner or designee. 2. Multiple-team tie a.
