3 WNBA FINALS OPPONENT CHICAGO SKY SERIES NOTES - The Mercury and the Sky meet for the first time in the WNBA Finals. - Phoenix swept the regular season series for the first time since The Mercury had lost three consecutive games against Chicago before winning on July 2. - The Sky played their games at the UIC Pavilion from In games played at the Pavilion, the Mercury went The regular season series dates back to 2006 and the Mercury own a 14-4 record against the Sky including winning the first nine games. - Candice Dupree averaged a team-high 18.5 points against the Sky in two regular season games and tied a seasonhigh with 26 points on July 2 vs. Chicago. Brittney Griner swatted away just about everything within reach in the first quarter, setting the stage for a Phoenix rout. Griner set a playoff record with eight MERCURY 83 blocked shots, five in the first quarter, and the Mercury soared past the Chicago Sky on Sunday in Game 1 of the WNBA Finals. Griner, the WNBA defensive player of the year, SKY 62 also had 12 points and seven rebounds. Dupree made her first 10 shots and scored 26 for the Mercury in their 19th consecutive home victory. Diana Taurasi added 19 points and 11 assists. Phoenix shot a finals record 58.5 percent from the field, Chicago 31.9 percent. Sylvia Fowles scored 19 points and grabbed 11 rebounds for Chicago but was just 8 of 20, US Airways Center usually against Griner in a matchup of the last two WNBA defensive players of the year. Phoenix, Arizona Elena Delle Donne only played 11 minutes because of a bad back. She finished with two points and didn't play in the second half with the game already out of reach. Delle Donne said she took herself out of the game because she thought she was hurting her team, and she hoped sitting the rest of the game out would make her better prepared for Game 2 of the best-of-5 series, set for Tuesday night in Phoenix. Alley Quigley, who was the league's sixth woman of the year, scored 13 points for the Sky. She missed 11 of her 15 shots. Phoenix led from the opening basket, was up by 22 at the half and by as many as 30 in the third. Griner's five first-quarter blocks broke the playoff record for a half. 4 Mercury vs. Sky, Regular Season Game 2 July 11, 2014 ATTENDANCE: 7,076 ROSEMONT, IL. Despite recording a season-worst 37.3 percent, Mercury overcame an off shooting night and 17 turnovers to beat struggling Chicago Sky on and extend MERCURY 72 their franchise-record winning streak to nine games. After trailing by as many as six, the Mercury rallied in the third quarter as Diana Taurasi scored 13 of her team-high 19 points SKY 66 in the second half. DeWanna Bonner added 13 points and Brittney Griner had 11 points and 10 rebounds for the Mercury (15-3), who have the league's best record and top the Western Conference standings. Candice Dupree added 11 points and 11 rebounds, and Penny Taylor had 10 points. Sylvia Fowles had 23 points and 11 rebounds while battling Allstate Arena foul trouble for the Sky (8-12), who have lost four straight and 12 of 15. They were without Rosemont, Illinois All-Star forward Elena Delle Donne and point guard Courtney Vandersloot. Delle Donne had a flare-up of Lyme disease and Vandersloot missed her fifth straight game with a sprained knee. She could be sidelined up to 10 weeks. Sky coach Pokey Chatman doesn't expect Delle Donne to return until after the All-Star game on July 19. Fowles reentered the game with five fouls with 5:06 to go and the Mercury leading Taurasi's 3 gave Phoenix a lead with 3:12 remaining. Tamera Young's layup pulled the Sky to within 65-61, but Dupree came up with a steal and layup for a lead to all but seal it with 1:18 left. Jamierra Faulkner had 13 points and Young 12 for Chicago, which shot 40.9 percent from the field. Epiphanny Prince, who came in averaging 17.4 points, finished with five. The Mercury came in averaging nearly 85 points per game. Diana Taurasi added 15 MERCURY 87 points, hitting a 3-pointer with 6:46 left in the third quarter to move into second place on the WNBA's career scoring list. Taurasi, who now has 6,457 points, reached that total in her SKY th game fewer than Smith, who has 6,452 points, played. Tina Thompson tops the list with 7,488 points. Dupree made two free throws in the first quarter to top 4,000 career points and is 22nd on the career scoring list. Dupree took advantage of the Sky's strategy of keying on phenom Brittney Griner, who set a league mark with 11 blocked shots on US Airways Center Sunday against Tulsa. Griner was held to four points on Wednesday but grabbed 11 Phoenix, Arizona rebounds and had three blocks for Phoenix (12-3). Allie Quigley scored 16 points to lead the Sky (8-9), who have lost four of six. Epiphanny Prince and Jamierra Faulkner added 11 each. The league-best Mercury, winners of eight of their last nine, scored 13 consecutive points in the third quarter to stretch their lead to 19. Faulkner was coming off a 27-point effort in a win against the Sparks on Tuesday, but shot just 4 for 16 from the field against Phoenix. The Sky again played without leading scorer Elena Delle Donne, who is out indefinitely with Lyme disease, and Courtney Vandersloot, who led the league in assists before spraining her knee. Vandersloot is expected to be out at least six weeks.
