4 Outlook Outlook solid mix of experienced veterans and talented A underclassmen has the Stanford men s basketball program poised for a breakthrough campaign in The Cardinal returns 12 letterwinners and its entire starting lineup from last year s squad, which achieved its 14th consecutive postseason appearance. Stanford is coming off an overall campaign that ended with a first round loss to Louisville in the NCAA Tournament. The Cardinal posted a 10-8 record in Pac-10 play, finishing sixth overall in what was considered by many to be one of the strongest conferences in the country. In addition to an 8-2 start, Stanford cracked the national rankings in late January and recorded impressive wins over the likes of Texas Tech, Virginia, Washington State, Oregon and UCLA. This year s club hopes to duplicate that success and build upon the tradition of a program that ranks as one of college basketball s finest. And the pieces remain in place, with graduated seniors Carlton Weatherby and Chris Bobel representing the only departures. Instead, all-conference selections Lawrence Hill and Brook Lopez will highlight a squad that hopes to challenge in the competitive Pac-10. With a total of seven upperclassmen leading the charge, the Cardinal appears ready to emerge as a contender. The national media has taken notice as well, with Stanford projected as a preseason top-25 program by numerous publications. The following is a position-by-position breakdown of where the Cardinal stands entering the campaign. Center Fresh off an impressive rookie season, sophomore Robin Lopez returns to anchor the middle for the Cardinal. One of three players to start every game, the 7-foot Lopez averaged 7.5 points and 5.5 rebounds and proved to be an intimidating presence down low. His 73 blocked shots led the squad and ranked second only to Curtis Borchardt s 85 swats during the season. Robin was one of the best shot-blockers at his position in our conference, said head coach Trent Johnson. Offensively, he continues to get better. The key for him will be to relax and stay consistent all year. Senior Peter Prowitt provides additional leadership and depth for the Cardinal at this spot. Prowitt was used in 18 contests last year and averaged 1.2 points and 1.2 rebounds per game. His size at 6-10 and ability to defend will become valuable to the squad when Lopez is out of the lineup. If Peter is healthy, he can really help us, stated Johnson. Peter gives us rebounding and a physical presence in the post. Fellow senior Taj Finger, a 6-8 forward, can be shuffled into the rotation as well depending on the matchup. Finger played in all 31 contests as a reserve last year, averaging 3.9 points and 2.9 rebounds per games. One of the more consistent free throw shooters on the squad last year, Finger also blocked 15 shots. Taj provides defensive energy and he is a good teammate who understands his role, Johnson said. It s his senior year and we need him to stay healthy and provide depth in the post. Forwards Sophomore Brook Lopez opened plenty of eyes with a tremendous rookie year that resulted in All-Pac- 10 Honorable Mention and All-Pac-10 Freshman Team accolades. The 7-foot Lopez posted 12.6 points and 6.0 rebounds per game while shooting 49.6-percent from the field in addition to blocking 45 shots. After missing some time early in the year following surgery, Lopez quickly asserted himself as one of the Cardinal s most dangerous and versatile scoring threats. The sky is the limit for Brook, said Johnson. Brook s approach to everything he does on and off the court must improve and if he can develop consistency in those areas, he has a chance to be a special player. Junior Lawrence Hill, Stanford s other All-Pac-10 selection, will be counted on for additional production and versatility. Last year, Hill led the Cardinal in scoring (15.7 ppg), rebounding (6.0 rpg) and three-point field goal percentage (41.0) while starting every game. His 33 blocked shots and 22 steals provide a snapshot of what he can contribute on defense. Lawrence has improved from year to year more than any other player in the program, said Johnson. However, he will not have the luxury of surprising anyone this year. I expect Lawrence to be someone that our opponents will have to be aware of at all times. One of three seniors on this year s squad, Fred Washington is coming off a season in which he started a career-best 31 games. Washington averaged 8.2 points and 5.2 rebounds in 30.2 minutes of playing time last year. A 62.9-percent free throw shooter, Washington s 52.1 field goal percentage and 113 assists were teambests. His ability to make an impact in all stat categories immensely helps the Cardinal. Fred did a little bit of everything for us last year, added Johnson. He was instrumental and did all the little things for us such as rebounding, defense, etc. Fred is probably one of the most underrated players in the conference. Sophomore Will Paul and freshman Josh Owens will see time off the bench. Paul participated in 17 games last year and averaged 5.7 minutes of playing time. The only freshman on this year s roster, Owens will be used in certain spots as he continues to make the transition from high school to Division 1. Will has the ability to play an important role for our team and we hope he works hard to maximize his potential, said Johnson. Josh might remind Stanford fans of Justin Davis. He is an explosive player and his athleticism and quickness at the four position will help us out. Guards Junior Anthony Goods enjoyed a solid season for the Cardinal last year, averaging 12.8 points and 3.2 rebounds per game. Goods started 24 of the 25 games he played in and connected on a team-best 60 triples while dishing out 58 assists. The coaching staff is excited about the prospect of having Goods available for a full season. Anthony s injury hurt us last year more than any other injury, said Johnson. He can play at the 1 or the 2, and he will look to build off an impressive sophomore year. Sophomore Landry Fields has impressed early in the fall and should receive additional playing time as a result. He competed in 30 games last year- all off the bench. Fields averaged 4.2 points and 2.5 rebounds per game while showing touch from beyond the arc with 20 three-pointers. His size and athleticism make for an interesting matchup for opponents. Landry had a good summer and foreign tour, as he shot the ball well, noted Johnson. He continues to grow and get stronger. We fully expect Landry to have a breakthrough year. One constant on the floor last year at the guard spot was junior Mitch Johnson. Running the point in 31 games with 20 starts, Johnson followed up a terrific freshman campaign with a sophomore season that included 103 assists and a team-best 29 steals. He also averaged 4.3 points and 2.8 rebounds per game in Mitch will have the same role, said Johnson. He will be our floor leader. Mitch enjoyed a good spring and summer, so we expect him to be solid once again. Junior Kenny Brown played in 23 games last year off the bench and a similar role is envisioned this year. Brown averaged 3.8 points per game in just under 10 minutes of playing time per contest. Brown also knocked down 18 treys. Kenny is an good shooter and will play the 2, Johnson said. He will provide us with defensive energy off the bench. Sophomore Da Veed Dildy saw playing time in 11 games last year and will continue to come off the bench. We moved Da Veed from the 1 to the 2, said Johnson. He got stronger in addition to being tough defensively and a good passer coming off the bench. Sophomore Drew Shiller, a transfer from San Francisco, will also get an opportunity to share some minutes at the point guard position. Shiller did not play last year due to NCAA transfer rules. In his most recent season of , Shiller averaged 4.4 points and 1.3 assists per game in 28 tilts with the Dons. Drew got an opportunity to play on the foreign tour after not playing basketball for a year, said Johnson. He is a good shooter who gives us added depth in the backcourt Stanford Basketball
