GAME RULES WALLBALL: Objective: Two players take turns hitting the ball against the wall. The player who returns the ball the most times without going out wins and plays the next person waiting. Start: The next person entering the game will serve. The server hits the ball and the ball must bounce once on the ground and then on the wall. The players hit the ball with their fists as it bounces off the wall as a fly or after one bounce on the ground. Each server may serve up to 3 people and then they are recycled. Second Serve: Each player gets a second serve if the first one wasn t good. If the second serve is not good then that server is recycled. Places and Boundaries: South The two side walls on either side of the south doors. The boundaries on the sides are where the wall ends. Wood is out. Playshed The two sides of the brick wall in the playshed. The boundaries on the sides are the 2 yellow lines on the east and west sides. North North playground will use separate rules for the high wallball courts and the low wallball courts. On the high courts, students will not be allowed to play for the rest of that recess if they hit a ball over the wall. On the short courts, students will receive one warning before losing the privilege to play wallball for that recess. The wooden wall. The boundaries are the yellow lines on the east and west side. If they won t leave you alone, tell the supervisor. If you don t want someone to chase you, don t run. SOCCER: Start of the Game There will be no team captains. The Field EA will line the students up and number them (example 1-2,1-2 or 1-1, 2-2) to select teams. The EA will then drop the ball in the middle of the field with a player from each team facing the direction of their goal. Use the side of your foot to kick the ball. Handball If a player touches the ball with their hands it is a handball. The other team will get a free kick from the spot the handball occurred. All other players must stand back at least 10 feet from the player kicking the free kick. Unsafe Play Ball needs to stay on the ground at all times. Use the side of your foot to kick the ball. Drop-kicking and headers are not allowed. If a player is intentionally kicking, tripping, hitting, or pushing other players the player will be removed from the game for the rest of the day and the other team will get the ball at the spot of the foul. If the player continues unsafe behavior after returning to the game he/she will not be allowed to play soccer for the remainder of the year or until they learn how to play fair and safe. Rainy Day Recess Down and Out rules will be in place if the field is not too wet to play on. Any player that goes down has to remove him/herself from the game immediately. If the player does leave the game then he/she will not be allowed to play soccer for a week. The rule is if you go down you go out no matter what the reason for falling is. Boundaries North Playgound the east fence and the west edge of the building is out of bounds. South Playground boundaries will be determined by the Field EA. Cones will be set up each recess for the goals on South Playground (this is the students responsibility). The fence may no longer be used for the goals. If the soccer ball goes over any fence more than time in a recess the players will lose the soccer ball for that recess and the recess to follow. JUMP ROPE: Page 5 of 7

6 WATCH FOR OTHER KIDS BEFORE YOU SWING ROPE Jump ropes are just for jumping or play landing helicopter. Jump ropes are to be used on the black top only. When you play helicopter, keep the rope below the knee. Tug of war with ropes or wrapping around other students is not allowed. Jump ropes must touch the ground. YOYO S AND HACKYSACKS: Yoyo s and hackysacks are your own responsibility; Students on the south playground will play at the west side between the playshed and the swings; Students on the north playground will play at the north end of the playground. FOUR SQUARE: Equipment: Volleyball, rubber ball, soccer, or basketball Serving: Player 4 serves the ball, which must be served underhanded by dropping the ball on the ground and then batting it underhanded with one or both hands to 1, 2, or 3 on the bounce. It is a fault to step off the number while serving in court 4. If ball is served outside of square, server is out. Play: Player receiving the volley must keep the ball in play by striking the ball after it has bounced once and directing it towards some other square (no backstops, no tea parties). o Play continues until one player fails to return the ball or commits a fault. A player who misses or faults must move to the rear of the line waiting for a turn to play. The other contestants advance counterclockwise one square. For example, if 3 faults, player 3 moves to the end of the waiting line, 2 moves to square 3, and 1 moves to square 2, and a new player moves to square 1. Faults: Failure to return the ball to another square after it strikes in player s area. Striking the ball with fist or hitting overhand or sidearm. 1. Causing ball to land on a line. 2. Allowing ball to touch any part of body except the hands. 3. Catching or carrying on return volley. 4. Stepping in another player s square. 5. Cannot lock game or take the ball from game once the game has started. USE ROCK, PAPER, SCISSORS TO RESOLVE ANY DISAGREEMENTS. BUMP RULES OBJECTIVE: To make your basket first If the person behind you makes it first you are recycled. BUMPING THE BALL You can bump your opponent s ball from the hoop only! No bumping the ball from your opponent s hands or in mid air. Granny shots through the bottom of the basket and coming back through the hoop will not be counted as a winning shot. Power shots ARE NOT ALLOWED. Form one line. Must shoot basket from the line. Second person tries to make their basket first to get the first person out. Students can enter the game as long as no one has been bumped out. When someone gets bumped out no one else can enter that game. They must wait until the next game starts. While waiting for the next game to begin, you must wait on the yellow side lines. Page 6 of 7

7 No chanting or yelling for a person to get someone out. If this happens you will be called out of the game for that recess. Semi-finals - last three players. If you touch the ball or the ball touches your body when it s NOT your turn, you are RECYCLED. Purposely stepping out of bounds is an automatic recycle. BASKETBALL RULES TEAMS At the beginning of each recess, two captains will be selected by the supervising EA. A player may only be captain once on any given day. They will take turns choosing players for their teams. The teams should be no larger than five players each. Other teams may challenge for the next game. COURT Basketball will take half court only in the playshed. Every effort will be made to allow continuation of the games on the end closest to the cafeteria. If the other games are interrupted repeatedly (more than three times in a given recess) the basket ball game will be suspended for the remainder of the recess. NO PLAY DAYS The supervising EA is responsible to make a decision about no play days at the beginning of each recess. In addition, individual students with unsafe shoes or apparel will not be allowed to participate in basketball games. This judgment will be made by the supervising EA. There will not be basketball on: 1. Rainy day recesses 2. Days when the pavement is too slippery to be safe. 3. Days when there is a not an EA available to supervise the game. POINTS Games will be played to 10 points, or 5 minutes, whichever comes first. The supervising EA is responsible to watch the time. The first team to reach 10 or the team with the highest number of points at the end of 5 minutes will remain on the court to play any challenging teams. If there are no challenging team, the two teams may continue play until another team challenges. A basket is worth 2 points and a free throw, following physical contact against someone shooting, is worth 1 point. NO CONTACT PLAY Students will not be allowed to make purposeful physical contact with another player during the game. A student who accidentally makes unsafe contact will be asked to remove himself from the game for the remainder of that recess. Students who are repeatedly unsafe will be asked to sit out for a longer period. They may be asked to assist as referee for the game, as well. Players may not reach in, or swipe at, a ball in another student s possession. A removed player s team will continue one player short. OTHER RULES OF PLAY Students should follow all other regular basketball rules, including dribbling when moving and no double dribbling. A ball going out of bounds will be awarded to the opposing team of the player who last touched the ball, and will be thrown in from the sidelines where it traveled out. In addition, all team players should have the opportunity to touch the ball at some point during the game. Team captains are responsible to include all their players in the game, or lose the right to be captains at subsequent recesses. Page 7 of 7
