No two teams have played each other as many times as the Wisconsin Badgers and the Minnesota Golden Gophers. Over the past 123 years, the two teams have met 122 times, with Minnesota leading the overall series with 58 wins to 56 losses. They have also tied eight times. The Big Ten is known for its trophy games and the Wisconsin/Minnesota rivalry features one of the most recognizable trophies in college football, Paul Bunyan s Axe. It is over six feet tall, with one side of the head painted red for Wisconsin and the other side painted gold for Minnesota. Along the handle of each teams side are the scores of the games won by that team, as well as the ties. Wisconsin has held the axe for eight consecutive seasons and 15 of the last 17. It never seems to matter who the favorite is in this rivalry, because both teams always come to play. There s more than a win or loss on the line in this one, there s a trophy, and it s a heck of a lot of fun to run around with. Pac-12 Game of the Week: Arizona State at UCLA Saturday, 4 p.m. pt/7 p.m. et (FOX) When Arizona State and UCLA arrive at the Rose Bowl Stadium Saturday afternoon, they both know one thing s for certain, each holds its own destiny in its hands. Neither team needs someone else to lose. If they win the rest of the regular season games ahead of them, they will be Pac-12 South division champions. Now, if Arizona State wins, they clinch a berth in the Pac-12 championship regardless of how they play against Arizona the final week of the season. If UCLA comes out on top, they still have to win their remaining game against USC to win the Pac-12 South. But without looking too far ahead, this one should be an exciting game, featuring two of the higher scoring offenses in the Pac-12 and the most consistent teams in the South division this year. Marion Grice has been a scoring machine all year long for the Sun Devils, but few players in the country have come on as strongly and scored as many touchdowns as UCLA freshman Myles Jack has in the last two weeks. The player who scores more touchdowns out of those two young men will likely win this game. National Game of the Week: Baylor at Oklahoma State Saturday, 5 p.m. pt/8 p.m. et (ABC) The Big 12 is up for grabs. Oklahoma State knocked off Texas last week to give the Longhorns its first conference loss of the year. The Cowboys now face the new big dog in the southwest, the Baylor Bears, who sit atop the Big 12 with the conferences lone undefeated record. Despite injury troubles, the Bears are averaging over 61 points per game, scoring 70 on four separate occasions this season. Quarterback Bryce Petty continues to play well, but is underappreciated on the national award circuit. Oklahoma State has gotten the job done this season with consistent play across the board. They have played two quarterbacks this season, each with decent numbers but nothing to blow you away. They have just one running back and one receiver with more than 500 yards rushing or receiving. But they rank in the top 15 in scoring offense and defense, and have found ways to win games. Will Baylor strike or can Oklahoma State keep the lightning in the bottle? ESPN s College Gameday will be in Stillwater to break it all down. 1

2 Weekly Polls The BCS rankings were as disappointing for Stanford this week as they were exciting for the Cardinal just the week before. The Cardinal rose to No. 4 after beating Oregon two weeks ago, but have fallen back to No. 9 after losing to USC this past week. USC is making a return to the BCS standings after the win, sneaking in at No. 23. Following Stanford s loss, No. 5 through 9 have each slid down a spot, just outside what can be called the last four standing, Alabama, Florida State, Ohio State and Baylor. Fresno State and Northern Illinois are just outside the at-large bid line, at No. s 15 and 16 respectively. Minnesota broke into the BCS rankings for the first time since 2008, ranked at No. 25. Panelists are randomly drawn by Harris Interactive from among more than 300 nominations supplied by the 10 Football Bowl Subdivision (formerly Division I-A) conferences and independent institutions. 6 What 2 Watch 4 Who s Trending? Baylor University The Baylor Bears have been on cruise control all year. They rank in the top ten in the country in passing offense, rushing offense, points per game and defensive points against. But the Bears started the year unranked in both the AP and Coaches Poll, so it s been an uphill battle all year, despite the scores of their games. But Baylor is in position to battle for a spot in the national championship game. The Bears schedule has been weak to this point, but they have a chance to prove their worth when it counts the most. Baylor finishes this year with No. 10 Oklahoma State, TCU and Texas, but do not have to play in a conference championship game. They are a sliver behind Ohio State for No. 3 in the BCS standings, and No. 1 Alabama, No. 2 Florida State and No. 3 Ohio State all have conference championships ahead of them. If Baylor can get past Oklahoma State in Stillwater this weekend, put a check for the Bears in the undefeated column. Brick Campaign The Brick Campaign is a joint effort between the Pasadena Tournament of Roses Association and Legacy Connections, a non-profit fundraising organization committed to preserving the history of the Rose Bowl Stadium and ensuring its viability for years to come. The Brick Campaign is designed to allow all Rose Bowl Game and college footbal fans to celebrate the 100th edition of the postseason classic. Participants will be able to leave their permanent mark that will not only celebrate the milestone event but also contribute ensuring the stadiums future. Hot Seat AGAIN Despite recovering, turning their seasons around, and being bowl eligible, Texas Longhorns coach Mack Brown and Nebraska Cornhusker coach Bo Pelini have remained in the lime light for all the wrong reasons. In the world of college football, eight or nine-win seasons used to be enough. Apparently that is no longer the case in Lincoln or Austin. While these two proud programs have a history of success, recent stumbles may see these coaches on their way out. Miami (FL) The once-top 10, comeback program of the year has caught a snag. At one point, we thought The U may have reached back in the time capsule and pulled out a piece of the 80 s, 90 s and early 2000 s, but the boys from Coral Gables are back to the future. The Canes have dropped three in a row, allowing 40-plus points in each game after allowing just 18 points per game in their first seven wins. Miami closes out the season with Pittsburgh and Virginia, the only two teams below them in the ACC Coastal division, and a chance to save the year. 7 Football 101 Bowl Prep My name is Doug Ingels, and I m the BCS intern in the media department for the Rose Bowl Game. I spent the past five years working for the Wisconsin Badger football team while I attended college. During that time, I was at nearly every practice and on the sideline for 63 games, wearing a headset, working with the coaches and learning the ins and outs of college football. I noticed there are many things overlooked by people who haven t had the same opportunities I ve had, but I m here to change that. Allow me to share with you some behind the scenes intel about the game we all love so much. I was fortunate enough to go to five bowl games in five years during my time with the Wisconsin football program. My first two years I went to Orlando for the Champs Sports Bowl (now known as the Russell Athletic Bowl) and then three straight trips to Pasadena. And making it to a bowl, regardless of the bowl, means teams go into bowl prep. Bowl prep is a lot like fall camp before the beginning of the season, because teams have an extended period of time to prepare for one team. Typically, for a late December or early January bowl game, teams will give players a few days off. NCAA rules allow teams to practice as much as they would throughout the season, but the extra time allows for the starters time off to get healthy and for the young guys to get a chance to show they have what it takes to play at the college level. While the bowl game is the primary goal during bowl prep, coaches are always looking to the future. After bowl prep, coaches don t see the players practice until March or April. In between December and spring practice is national signing day, when high school players sign letters of intent to attend colleges to play football. So after the days off, teams also have to deal with working around final exams. This means that practices aren t every day, with players getting days off for taking tests and studying. As it gets closer to the game and school is out, practice becomes more like a normal game week in the middle of the season. Finally, the team travels to the bowl site anywhere from four days to a week before the game. This allows for teams to have several practices to become acclimated with the weather at the bowl site, which is more important for some teams (like Wisconsin) playing in places like Florida or California. Rose Bowl Game Fun Fact The 1942 Rose Bowl Rallied a Country In August, Brian Curtis of Sports Illustrated wrote an article entitled War and Roses: The 1942 Rose Bowl rallied a rattled country. The article tells the story of the 1942 Rose Bowl Game, the only edition of the game not played in Pasadena. Oregon State had won the Pacific Coast Conference, and were able to choose their eastern opponent for the Rose Bowl Game. Undefeated and stacked with All-Americans, Duke was the easy choice. And on December 1, 1941, the Blue Devils were planning their trip to California. But following the bombing of Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941, military officials decided the Rose Bowl Game would be too easy of a target for another attack. But Duke head football coach Wallace Wade was a military man, having served in the army during World War I, and he knew the importance of the Rose Bowl Game, having won the 1925, 1926 and 1930 games coaching for Alabama. So Wade offered to host the game at Duke, and the rest was history. To read the article, visit 7

8 Rose Bowl Game All-Century Nominees 1990 ROSE BOWL GAME ALL-CENTURY CLASS NOMINEES INCLUDE ALVAREZ, DAYNE AND JOHNSON Barry Alvarez, Ron Dayne and Keyshawn Johnson have been nominated as finalists for the Rose Bowl Game All-Century Class as representatives from the 1990 s. The candidates, as voted by an esteemed panel from the Football Writers Association of America (FWAA), are the ninth of a series of names that will be unveiled each Sunday throughout the remainder of the college football regular season. In commemoration of the 100th Rose Bowl Game, the All-Century Class will highlight and honor great players and coaches throughout the history of The Granddaddy of Them All. Current Wisconsin Athletic Director Barry Alvarez began his career with the Badgers as head football coach in 1990 and spent 16 seasons building a nationally well-respected program before retiring in 2005 to his current post. As the winningest coach in Wisconsin football history and only Big Ten coach to win Rose Bowl Games in back to back years, (1999, 2000), he joins Ohio State s Woody Hayes as the only Big Ten coach with at least three Rose Bowl Game wins. He finished his career with 118 coaching victories, a Wisconsin record, an 8-4 mark in 12 career bowl games, the 1993 national coach of the year and two Big Ten coach of the year awards. Alvarez returned to the coaching ranks for his fourth appearance in Pasadena for the 2013 Rose Bowl Game. He was a 2009 Rose Bowl Hall of Fame inductee and later inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in Ron Dayne started four years at running back for the University of Wisconsin. During his career, he set the NCAA Division I-A rushing record for total yards gaining 1,863 yards as a freshman, 1,421 as a sophomore, 1,325 as a junior and 1,834 as a senior. Dayne led the Badgers to bowl games each season with his most impressive performances coming in the 1999 and 2000 Rose Bowl Game victories where he rushed for 246 yards and 200 yards, respectively. Garnering Player of the Game honors in both appearances, he became the third player in the history of the Rose Bowl Game to win the award more than once and the first Big Ten player; a record still held today. Dayne won the Heisman Trophy in 1999 along with numerous accolades, including Big Ten Player of the Year and All-American honors. He was inducted into the Rose Bowl Hall of Fame in 2011 and the College Football Hall of Fame in In USC s shootout win against Northwestern in the 1996 Rose Bowl Game, Keyshawn Johnson was named Player of the Game after pulling in 12 passes for 216 yards, including a 56-yard touchdown sprint. The 216 receiving yards is a Rose Bowl Game record that still stands and the 12 receptions is the second-highest single-game total in Rose Bowl Game history. This performance came against a Northwestern team that led the nation in scoring defense entering the game. Johnson is a two-time All-American and was the No. 1 pick in the 1996 NFL Draft for the New York Jets. He was a member of the Tampa Bay Super Bowl XXXVII Championship team and is a threetime Pro Bowler (1998, 1999 and 2001). Johnson currently works for ESPN as an NFL analyst. He was inducted into the Rose Bowl Hall of Fame in The FWAA voting committee will select one Rose Bowl Game representative from each decade to comprise the All-Century Class. In addition, one overall player and one overall coach will be highlighted at a press conference on Selection Sunday, which will take place on December 8, 2013, in Pasadena. 10 News and Notes Everett Golson has applied for readmission to Notre Dame, coach Brian Kelly said Tuesday, according to the Chicago Tribune. Golson, formerly the starting quarterback for the Fighting Irish, was suspended in May for poor academic judgment, according to a statement released by the player. Texas A&M president R. Bowen Loftin played a pivotal role in moving the Aggies to the SEC. When the university left the Big 12, it also left the 118-year rivalry it had with Texas. But Loftin wants to make it known loud and clear, he still wants the Longhorns. I ve always said anytime, anywhere, although others [in the A&M administration] are not saying it that way anymore, Loftin told the San Antonio Express-News Brent Zwerneman. I still think that, left to ourselves, we will find a way to get together. Frank Lauterbur, who coached Toledo to two undefeated seasons in football before leaving to take over at Iowa for three seasons in the early 1970s, has passed away. He was 88. Toledo athletic department spokesman Paul Helgren says Lauterbur died at a Toledo-area nursing home. A cause of death wasn t released. Bradley Roby has made his intentions to declare for the NFL draft after this season well known for a while, and the Ohio State cornerback has the blessing of his coach and permission to participate in the senior activities ahead of his last home game. Auburn has figured out a way to get Auburn fans to fill its basketball arena. For those fans who are unable to score tickets to the Iron Bowl against Alabama on Nov. 30, Auburn will open Auburn Arena, where it plays its basketball games, to fans. A lawsuit challenging the NCAA over payment of athletes isn t going away soon. The lead attorney for former UCLA basketball player Ed O Bannon said Wednesday his client will continue to pursue his suit against the NCAA, despite a ruling earlier this month that blocked an effort to expand it to a larger group of former athletes.
