Toughness Drills Jeff Young Walsh University General Thoughts - Wants his team to be at the bottom of the league in steals and blocked shots (Walsh plays a packline defense) 1. Hold opponents under 65 pts. & 400/0 shooting 2. Outrebound opponent by Commit less than 12 turnovers
IALII UIIN8nY 6 Year Overall Record National Champions 2006 Elite Eight 2007 Sweet Sixteen 2008 Sweet Sixteen 2009 National Tournament 2010 National Runner-up JEFF YOUNG (330) (CELL) JYOUNG@WALSH.EDU
Bubble Rebounding... 'r... 1 This is a defensive rebounding drill done with the use of the bubble. There are 3 teams of 4.1 team on offense on the perimeter, 1Uned up in the paint on defense and 1 waiting on the baseline. The coach or manager with the ball passes to any ofthe offensive players and calls any number 1-4. Whichever # is called has to guard the ball. The other 3 defenders scramble to find someone to box-out. The offensive player with the ball must shoot it. All rebounds are worth 1 point An offensive rebound gives the offense 1 point and they stay on offense. New defense comes in. A defensive rebound gives the defense 1 point and they move to offense. New defense comes in. Establish a winning score or amount of time and keep tract of 1 s t, 2 nd and 3 rd place, as well as punishment. Punishment = # lost by X's place. For example, if a team finishes 2 nd by 3 rebounds, then they would have 6 of whatever the punishment is.
3 on 3 wi a Coach This is a different way to play 3 on 3. The coach puts the ball into playas the offense works to get open. On a defensive rebound, the ball is outlet passed to the coach and the "X" team works to get open. Rules: Make it take. If the ball is scored, the scoring team takes it out of the basket and outlets to the coach. They remain on offense. Offense can use the coach at any time. There is a 10 second shot clock. The game is to 5 (2 point shot = 1, 3 point shot = 2) It is a series. Best of 5 or 7. Variations: Change rules to emphasize anything you want (i.e. Offensive rebound = 1 point..etc. )
4 on 4 Shell Drill Drill starts with 4 defenders sprinting to the opposite baseline. x x All 4 defenders sprint back and match up. Defense has 8 sec. to get down and back before coach tosses a ball in. x1 CD Defense must get 3 stops to get out Rotate in extra players After 1st stop, defense runs to free throw line extended (6 sec.) After 2 nd stop, defense runs to Yz court (4 sec.) Offense has a 2 dribble max. and 10 sec. shot clock Defense has 10 push-ups for an offensive rebound Variations: Defend against different actions (e.g. dribble drive, flex, high ball screen, down screen, etc..) Do as a 4 on 3 disadvantage/scramble drill Give offense no dribbles This is a good conditioning drill Holds teammates accountable
4 on 4 on 4 Initial Setup: There are 3 teams of 4; 1 at each end and one with the ball at Yz court. The team with the ball attacks whichever end the coach designates to begin the drill and plays 4 on 4. Once the "X" team takes control of the ball, they attack full-court to the other end. The # team can pressure all the way up to Yz court. At Yz court, the # team stops defending and the "circle" team picks up. the drill continues in this manner. Rules: A team receives the appropriate point total for a scored basket (i.e. 2 or 3) A team receives 3 points for an offensive rebound A team loses 3 points for a turnover Play for set time or to desired score Variations: Allow the offense no dribbles Allow the team that scores to stay on offense and attack defense to get a stop to the other end, forcing the
5 on 4 + 1/ 5 on on 4 +1: Coach calls a # and passes the ball to a member of the offensive team on the baseline. The # called must touch the baseline and then get into the play. The offense is at a 5 on 4 advantage. 5 on 3 +2: Coach calls 23's and passes the ball to a member of the offensive team on the baseline. The #'s called must both touch the baseline before Getting into the play. The offense is at a 5 on 3 advantage. Rules: 2 trips, down and back. It is 5 on 5 on the way back and run secondary. Offense has 6 seconds to score. Count scores as usual Offensive Rebounds = +3, Turnovers = -3
Wine & Gold 2 on 1 Progression x x x This a typical transition build up drill. Xl shoots and 1 or 2 rebound. The ball is pushed 2 on 1 to the opposite end. x4 x After the score, rebound or steal, the "X" team takes control, X2 and X3 come on and the drill continues 3 on 2. 2 players are added each trip until it becomes 5 on 5. Rules: The 2 on 1 must be a lay~up The 3 on 2 is allowed only 2 passes 2's count for 2, 3's count for 3. Shoot free throws (make = +1, miss = -1) Offensive Rebound = +3 Turnovers = -1 Play for predetermined points or for set amount of time Subtract points for bad shots taken
20 Minute Shooting Drill Spots: Spot 1: Middle of the paint. Shoot 1 minute and switch. Spot 2: Free throw line jump shots. Shoot 1 minute and switch (goal::; 15+) Spot 3: Elbow-to-elbow jumpers. Shoot 1 minute and switch (goal = 15+) Spot 4: Start at top of the key, 1,2 step into a 15 ft. jumper (2 steps forward, 2 steps back). Shoot 1 minute and switch (goal::; 15+) Spot 5: Midway between top of key and foul line. Shoot 1 minute and switch (goal ::; 13+) Spot 6: 3's from the top of the key. Shoot 1 minute and switch (goal::; 12+). Both partners shoot and then repeat. Spot 7: Same as spot 5. Spot 8: Finish with foul line jumpers (same as spot 2). Shoot 2 minutes and switch (goal = 30+)
This is a very tough conditioning drill as well as a shooting drill. The drill is done for 5 minutes or until completed if done in under 5. There is 1 shooter and 1 rebounder. The goal is 3 makes per spot. If the shot is missed, the shooter runs to the opposite baseline and back. Cavalier Shooting
