Lead changed - 16 times. MONTANA SETS PROGRAM RECORD WITH 7TH CONSECUTIVE ROAD WIN GRAND FORKS, N.D. Between the travel, the short rest and having to come from behind, nothing came easy on Saturday, but in the end, Montana overcame another tough test to defeat North Dakota, 72-67, and stay unbeaten in Big Sky Conference play. In addi on to an 11th consecu ve victory overall, Montana set a program record with its seventh straight road win. Addi onally, head coach Travis DeCuire won his 50th Big Sky contest, becoming the fastest coach in league history to the milestone (50-15,.769 winning percentage). If I ve done anything right, it s that I ve surrounded myself with the right people, and when you do that you ll be successful, DeCuire said. I love these guys, I love this group. It s been a fun ride and we have to enjoy the process. I look forward to con nuing the process and seeing what happens. Jamar Akoh was nearly unstoppable for the Grizzlies, scoring 23 points and grabbing 11 rebounds for his fi h double-double of the season. He was good all game long, but was at his best when it ma ered the most, scoring seven consecu ve Montana points in the second half to help turn a deficit into a lead with 9:50 to play. Grit, no glamour, DeCuire said. We ve come from behind every me we ve won here, so we knew it would be a tough test. They stuck together and fought, and we found a way to win. Our pace got be er and we got more aggressive. We had a sense of confidence as the game progressed. Despite being a highly contested game that would come down to the wire, Montana would trail just twice over the final 10 minutes, for a total of 40 seconds. The Grizzlies top-two scorers were held to 21 points 13 below their combined season average but once again, both did big things at cri cal moments. With Montana trailing with 5:21 on the clock, Ahmaad Rorie hit a three-pointer to give the Grizzlies the lead for good. Moments later and s ll nursing just a two-point advantage, Michael Oguine took over with a putback layup and a huge three-pointer to give the Griz their largest lead of the second half, 67-60, with 48 seconds remaining. The three was fed from Rorie, who had a career-high-tying seven assists on the day. I gave all credit in the locker room to Ahmaad Rorie, DeCuire said. It wasn t his night, and he knew it, so he goes out and gets us seven assists and he made some big passes down the stretch. That s when it s a team effort. Sophomore Sayeed Pridge scored seven points and had four assets and a steal, while Timmy Falls made a pair of three-pointers in the first half. Senior Fabijan Krslovic was also in double figures for the second consecu ve game (12 points), making his presence down low, especially early. It really was a team effort, DeCuire said. We knew there would be an advantage down low, but at the end of the day it was Bobby Moorehead, Sayeed Pridge, Timmy Falls, Ahmaad Rorie, Michael Oguine that worked very hard to get it in there as those two (Akoh and Krslovic) really worked well together. A er allowing North Dakota to shoot 54 percent in the opening 20 minutes, the Grizzlies clamped down to limit the Figh ng Hawks to 37 percent in the second half. UND also turned the ball over 14 mes on eight Montana steals. Montana used a 7-0 run late in the first half to take a hal ime lead, but North Dakota came out strong to begin the second half, scoring nine of the first 11 points and taking the lead just over 7 minutes in. Montana did not panic, however, regaining the lead just over 2 minutes later. The result snapped North Dakota s threegame home winning streak. S ll without a loss in league play, Montana has seven games remaining in the regular season with five of them inside Dahlberg Arena. The Grizzlies will host Portland State (Thursday) and Sacramento State (Saturday) this coming week. Tickets can be purchased online or at the Adams Center cket office.

4 NOTES 4 PORTLAND STATE WILL PRESENT CHALLENGE TO CON- FERENCE-LEADING GRIZZLIES Seemingly every night, the Montana men s basketball team rewrites history in one form or another, most recently se ng a school record for consecu ve road victories (seven) and head coach Travis DeCuire becoming the fastest coach in Big Sky history to 50 conference wins. The Grizzlies have won 11 consecu ve games overall, and will look to push that to a dozen on Thursday vs. Portland State. The Vikings have hit some adversity since the two teams met less than a month ago, losing three of their last four games three of which came without leading scorer Deontae North. S ll, though, Portland State presents one of Montana s toughest challenges on both sides of the ball. They s ll have a lot of fire power, it s just how they manage it, assistant coach Jay Flores said. They re a very dangerous team when they re clicking, and no one else in the conference does what they do. The Vikings rank fourth na onally, averaging 88.3 points per game. Aside from North, they have seven other players averaging 6.0 points per game or be er, including their top three-point shooter in Bryce Canda. The senior leads the Vikings for three-point shoo ng, rebounding and steals, and ranks second for assists and scoring. Freshman Holland Woods leads the en re conference for assists. While the Vikings offense has the pieces to score they scored 89 points last month vs. Montana in Portland it s their defense that is scarier. Portland State plays a trap-style of defense, trying to force turnovers and prevent shots from being taken. The Vikings are incredibly good at it, as well, leading all of Division I basketball for steals (10.7 per game) and turnover margin (+7.4). Against the Grizzlies in January, Portland State forced Montana into 19 turnovers. Despite that, however, Montana was s ll able to score 91 points on 55-percent shoo ng. If Montana can get past the press, it will have good opportuni es to score. The key is taking care of the ball and ge ng it across half court, head coach Travis DeCuire said. If we re able to do that, we should be able to run our offense and get the ball to the rim. The three-point win was Montana s slimmest of conference play, doing so behind a record-se ng night from junior Michael Oguine. Oguine scored a career-high 39 points as Montana overcame a six-point hal ime deficit to hand the Vikings their first home loss of the season. The Grizzlies made six consecu ve free throws over the final minute to ice the game. In November and December, we weren t winning these games, DeCuire said a er the win. We learn from losses, and now that it counts and ma ers, these guys are believing in each other and finding ways to make it happen. Thursday night is 80s night at Dahlberg Arena, with fans encouraged to wear 80s a re. Students always get in free with their Griz Card, and will receive free pizza while supplies lasts prior to the game. Tickets can be purchased online or at the Adams Center cket office. Montana is a perfect 9-0 at Dahlberg Arena this season. JUST KEEP WINNING Montana s 11-game win streak is the longest under Travis DeCuire, and is ed for the eighth-longest ac ve streak in the NCAA. In more than a century of basketball at the university, Montana has reached 11 consecu ve victories six mes (five mes against all-division-i teams). We re just trying to stay hungry, Travis DeCuire recently said. Any hint of complacency we deal with it right away, but I haven t seen much of it. They re playing for the bigger picture. They re playing together. When you get a group willing to give up for the be er of the whole, you ve always got a chance to win, and right now we have a lot of guys doing that. DOUBLE-DIGIT WIN STREAKS Wins Year STARTING STRONG Montana is off to a 11-0 start to begin Big Sky Conference play, marking the second me in the Grizzlies 55-year history in the league. The Grizzlies also did it in , winning their first 14 games. The streak is the fourth-best start in Big Sky history, trailing only Weber State 15-0 start in 1969), Weber State (14-0 start in 2003) and Montana (14-0 start in 2013). ROAD STREAK While Montana owns an 11-game winning streak overall, the Grizzlies seven game road winning streak is a school record and is ed for the third-longest ac vely in the NCAA. Na onally, the Grizzlies trail Saint Mary s (13) and Purdue (8). FIRST TO 50 In four seasons in the Big Sky Conference, Travis DeCuire has won at an historic pace. DeCuire holds a mark in Big Sky ac on (.766), by far the best of any Montana coach in school history. However, a win on Saturday would make DeCuire the fastest coach in Big Sky history to reach 50 conference wins. He currently is Weber State s Randy Rahe accomplished the feat in his 67th game with the Wildcats (50-17). Addi onally, DeCuire s current conference winning percentage is the thirdbest in Big Sky history, and the best among coaches with at least 40 wins. 23 GAMES IN At 18-5 through 23 games, Montana is off to one of its be er starts in school history. The Grizzlies have begun a season 18-5 or be er eight mes prior to this season, most recently in (19-4 through 23 games). 18 AND COUNTING With 18 wins, Montana has already surpassed last year s mark and is well on its way to a third 20-win season under Travis DeCuire. Montana is also guaranteed a.500 record or be er for the 10th consecu ve season. SCOUTING PORTLAND STATE Portland State enters Thursday s game with a 14-9 mark, including a 4-6 record in Big Sky contests. A er going 10-3 in non-conference play, including wins over Stanford and Cal and respectable losses to Duke, Butler and Oregon, the Vikings

5 NOTES 5 have lost six of their last 10 and three of their last four. All six of Portland State s conference losses have been by single digits. PSU has one of the na on s strongest defenses, leading the NCAA for steals (10.7 per game) and turnover margin (+7.4). PSU also ranks fourth na onally, averaging 88.3 points per game. The Vikings lead the Big Sky Conference overall for scoring (88.3), steals (10.7), assists (17.2), assist-to-turnover ra o (1.4), blocked shots (3.7), offensive rebounds (14.1), three-pointers made (9.7 per game), turnovers forced (19.7) and turnover margin (+7.4). The Vikings are led by Deontae North (21.1 points per game; 25th in NCAA). However, the senior has missed the last three games. Senior Bryce Canda averages 14.8 points per game and ranks in the top 15 in the Big Sky for rebounding, steals, assists and three-pointers. PSU has four players with at least 33 steals on the season. Barret Peery is in his first season at PSU. The Vikings went a year ago. SERIES VS. THE VIKINGS Montana and Portland State first met in and played at least once in 13 of the next 16 seasons. The two teams then took a 16-year hiatus before the series resumed in , and have played every season since. Montana holds a edge in the series, including a 24-5 mark in Missoula. From through , Montana won nine consecu ve in the series, and under Traivs DeCuire the Grizzlies are 6-1. Montana s core has had plenty of success against the Vikings: In the only mee ng between the two teams in , Fabijan Krslovic, then a freshman, had eight points and six rebounds in the Grizzlies 19-point win. Montana shot 56 percent in a home win over Portland State in , led by 20 points and four assists from Michael Oguine. On the road in , Montana overcame a nine-point hal ime deficit, receiving five points, three rebounds and three assists from Krslovic. In UM s only loss under DeCuire, Portland State went on a 18-3 run to open the second half, a er a first half in which there were 16 lead changes. The Griz lost despite 29 points, seven rebounds and five assists from Ahmaad Rorie, 24 points and seven rebounds from Krslovic, and a double-double from Oguine. Montana split with the Vikings in , holding on for a three-point win at home. In the victory, Rorie had 28 points and five assists, Oguine had 15 points and four assists, Bobby Moorehead had 10 points and six boards, and Krslovic had six points and 11 rebounds. Led by Michael Oguine s 39 points, Montana shot 55.1 percent to win earlier this season on the road. LEADING THE BIG SKY Through 10 games, Montana holds a 2.5-game lead in the Big Sky standings. The Grizzlies, though, also are atop the conference for many offensive and defensive sta s cal categories. NATIONAL RANKING Montana cracked the CollegeInsider.com Mid-Major Top 25 poll for the first me this season on Jan. 15, and has steadily moved up each week since. The Grizzlies are No. 14 in this week s Mid-Major Top 25 and No. 15 in the Mid-Major Madness power rankings. The Mid-Major Top 25 ranks the top teams from the America East, Atlan c Sun, Big Sky, Big South, Big West, Colonial, Horizon, Ivy, Metro Atlan c, Mid-American, Mid-Eastern, Missouri Valley, Northeast, Ohio Valley, Patriot, Southern, Southland, Southwestern, Summit, Sun Belt, West Coast and Western Athle c conferences, in addi on to independents. The poll, now in its 19th season, is voted on by 31 head coaches. HOME SWEET HOME The Grizzlies hold a perfect 9-0 mark at home this season, and over the past decade has won more than 80 percent of its contests inside Dahlberg Arena, going (.819). 6 NOTES 6 PLAYING FROM IN FRONT Through 11 Big Sky games, the Grizzlies have trailed for just 56 minutes, 9 seconds out of 440 total minutes (12.8 percent). More impressive, they have trailed for just 9:49 in the second half (4.5 percent). TERRIFIC TRIO Montana is the only school in Big Sky play to have three players rank in the top 15 for scoring, with juniors Ahmaad Rorie (17.5; seventh), Jamar Akoh (16.7; 10th) and Michael Oguine (16.2; 11th) accomplishing the feat. Rorie has been in double figures 20 mes this season including 20-plus on 11 occasions. Oguine has been in double figures in all but three contests, while Akoh has accomplished the feat in 14 of his past 16 contests, including five double-doubles. TRENDING Montana is undefeated at home this season (9-0). The Grizzlies are a perfect 16-0 when leading or ed at hal ime, compared to 2-5 when trailing. UM is 12-2 in games decided by double digits. The Grizzlies are 9-0 when scoring 80 or more points, and 16-1 when scoring at least 70 points. Montana is 1-1 when opponents score fewer than 70 points, with the excep on coming in a three-point loss at Washington. Montana is 13-0 when shoo ng above.450. The Thunderbirds entered the contest averaging nearly 9 makes and 24 three-point a empts per game, but were held to just 1-of-11 shoo ng, with Montana s mindset on taking away SUU s go-to shot. Two nights later vs. the Lumberjacks, the Grizzlies made a season-most 12 three-pointers (42.9 percent) en route to victory. 50% Montana is shoo ng be er than 50 percent (.503) from the floor during its 11 conference games, a league best. At home this season, the Grizzlies have made at least half of their shots in seven of their past eight games, including a season-high 62 percent vs. North Dakota (Jan. 4). HALFTIME ADJUSTMENTS Over the past seven games, Montana has entered hal ime ed or trailing on four occasions. In fact, during that span, the Grizzlies have led by an average of just 2.1 points per game. They have come out of the break strong, however, winning those seven games by an average of 12.3 points. THE 1,000-POINT CLUB Guard Michael Oguine became the 32nd member of Montana s 1,000-point club on Jan. 27, scoring 23 points against Northern Arizona. The junior now sits in 30th place and is one of 14 players in UM history to reach the milestone in his third season. At his current pace, Oguine could finish his junior season with more than 1,200 points, which would rank in the top 16. BE LIKE MIKE Junior guard Michael Oguine, a third-team All-Big Sky selec on in , scored in double figures in the first 11 games of the season, including 29 in a win at Pi (Nov. 13), followed by 39 at Portland State (Jan. 13). Oguine does it all for the Griz, leading the team with 36 steals and ranking second with 15.3 points per game. He also ranks second for assists (44) and blocks (13), and third for rebounding (4.8 per game). During Big Sky play, Oguine leads the league with 20 steals and ranks 11th for scoring (16.2 points per game). He is the only player to rank in the top 15 for shoo ng (.536; 13th), three-point shoo ng (.463; seventh) and freethrow percentage (.813; 12th). ALL-AROUND RORIE Ahmaad Rorie is among the na on s elite for minutes played, scoring and steals, ranking in the top 150 na onally for all three categories. Among Big Sky athletes specifically, Rorie is the only player in the conference to rank in the top 10 for scoring (17.5 points per game; seventh), assists (3.5 per game; seventh) and steals (1.1 per game; 15th). Rorie also ranks third in the conference with a 2.4 assist-to-turnover ra o, ninth with a.455 three-point shoo ng percentage and eighth with 33.6 minutes played per game. NEARLY PERFECT FROM THE LINE Ahmaad Rorie made his first 24 free-throw a empts to begin Big Sky ac on. He is now 31-of-33 and ranks third in the league with a.939 free-throw percentage. On the season, he is making a team-best 83.9 percent of his free-throw a empts (73-of-87).

7 NOTES 7 AKOH TAKING OVER The Grizzlies had high hopes for Jamar Akoh, a transfer from Cal State Fullerton who redshirted a year ago. In his first two games, however, he combined for just four points and two rebounds, being limited to 28 total minutes due to foul trouble. Over the next 21 games, Akoh has taken over down low, averaging 15.2 points and 7.4 rebounds, and shoo ng 60.9 percent. He has 17 double-figure scoring games during that 21-game span, including 13 of the past 15 games During conference play, Akoh ranks 10th in the league for scoring (16.7 points per game), fourth for rebounding (6.7) and ninth for steals (1.2). He is the only player to rank in the top 10 for all three categories. Akoh also ranks third with a.594 field-goal percentage. AKOH EARNS WEEKLY HONORS Junior forward Jamar Akoh was named player of the week by the Big Sky Conference and College Sports Madness on Jan. 8. It was the first weekly honor of his career. Akoh averaged 28.0 points and 9.5 rebounds per game in victories over North Dakota and Northern Colorado. Against the Figh ng Hawks, he had a double-double with 22 points and 11 rebounds both team highs in addi on to three assists and a steal. Two nights later, he scored 34 points, the most by a Grizzly in eight seasons. STOUT DEFENSE Montana ranks in the top third na onally for the majority of defensive sta s cal categories: 16.7 turnovers forced per game: 16th in NCAA (2nd in BSC) +3.7 turnover margin: 20th (2rd) 8.1 steals per game: 19th (2nd) +4.0 rebounding margin: 67th (2nd) 68.3 points allowed per game: 82nd (2nd).423 field-goal percentage defense: 95th (3rd) CRASHING THE GLASS Montana has out-rebounded its opponents in 17 of its last 22 games, which is par cularly impressive considering four of those contests have come against Power-5 teams and another came against a UC Irvine team that ranked No. 2 na onally for total rebounds at the me. More than one-third of Montana s rebounds have come from the offensive end (33.6 percent); that number was 28.6 percent a year ago. The Grizzlies are currently averaging 12.3 offensive rebounds per game this season (47th in NCAA). FABULOUS PLAY Lone senior Fabijan Krslovic has stepped up his game of late, averaging 8.3 points and 4.6 rebounds over the past 10 games, including back-to-back double-digit scoring games at Northern Colorado (Feb. 1) and North Dakota (Feb. 3). Krslovic is shoo ng 68.9 percent during that span. MORE MOOREHEAD Bobby Moorehead struggled offensively for much of his sophomore season in , averaging 3.9 points per game on.320 shoo ng. The junior has turned things around in , averaging 8.1 points per game and ranking second on the team for minutes played (31:46), three-pointers (39) and rebounding (5.2 per game). His 12 blocked shots rank third, while his 26 steals rank fourth. Recently, Travis DeCuire called Moorehead his team s toughest player, and following the first double-double of his career (10 points, career-high 12 rebounds at Montana State), he called his a beast, referencing his Twi er handle. More impressive than the double-double, Moorehead locked down preseason player of the year Tyler Hall, limi ng him to zero field goals in the second half. PRIDGETT PERFORMING Sophomore Sayeed Pridge is Montana s first player off the bench, and he s quietly and consistently pu ng up strong performances for the Griz. In addi on to 7.5 points per game, Pridge is shoo ng at a 44.2-percent clip and ranks second on the team with 32 steals. His 18 steals during conference play are ed for third in the Big Sky. Pridge also ranks third for blocked shots (12), fourth for assists (32) and fi h for rebounding (4.3 per game). FRESHMAN FALLS Timmy Falls scored 12 points through Montana s first 10 games of the season before breaking out vs. UC Irvine (Dec. 19). The freshman played 22 minutes off the bench and scored 14 points, including 4-for-4 shoo ng from three-point range. Falls also had several no-look passes and took a charge on defense. Since his breakout performance vs. UC Irvine, Falls is averaging 22 minutes and 5.5 points per game. He s also added 33 assists and 12 steals during the 13-game stretch. PULLING AWAY Montana concluded the first half of Big Sky play with an 18-point victory over Northern Arizona (Jan. 27). A er trailing early in the first half, Montana was able to take a seven-point lead into hal ime by holding the Lumberjacks to just two made field goals over the final 10:57 of the first half. Following the intermission, Montana made 11 of its first 12 shots offensively, while forcing turnovers on six of NAU s first seven possessions of the half. Just 6:29 into the second half, the Grizzlies had expanded a seven-point lead to 28 points. OUR STATE Montana defeated Montana State on Jan. 26 for the 13th me in the past 14 mee ngs. The Grizzlies trailed by as many as nine points in the first half before the Grizzlies held the Bobcats to 19 second-half points and just four made field goals (16.7 percent). Montana State s top-two scorers, Tyler Hall and Harald Frey, were held without a field goal in the second half. WIDE MARGIN The Grizzlies recorded back-to-back 30-point victories (at Southern Utah, Dec. 30; vs. North Dakota, Jan. 4), marking the first me in 44 years that Montana had won consecu ve games by 30 or more points. The last me the Grizzlies did it was in , under Jud Heathcote. In the midst of a 13-game win streak, Montana defeated Gonzaga by 35 and Northern Arizona by 32. Montana is out-scoring its conference opponents , winning by an average of 15.7 points per game (league best).

8 NOTES 8 OGUINE S CAREER NIGHT Michael Oguine was named the Big Sky Conference Ready Nutri on Player of the Week on Jan. 15, a er leading the Grizzlies to a pair of road victories. Oguine averaged 27.5 points per game on 68 percent shoo ng, also adding 12 total rebounds, six steals, five assists and a blocked shot on the week. It was highlighted by a 39-point performance at Portland State that got him and the Griz featured on SportsCenter. The 39 points scored were the most by a Grizzly since Anthony Johnson scored 42 vs. Weber State in the 2010 Big Sky Conference championship game, and the third-most by a Big Sky athlete this season. Twenty-four of Oguine s career-high 39 points came in the second half, helping Montana overcome a six-point hal ime deficit. The Grizzlies had runs of 11-0 and 13-2 in the second half, with Oguine scoring 11 points during those two stretches, including a huge three-pointer in the corner that gave Montana a game-high 13-point lead. Oguine also added a season-high eight rebounds vs. the Vikings. Two nights earlier, at Sacrament State, he scored 16 points and had a team-most four steals. PULLING THROUGH Although Montana led Portland State (Jan. 13) by as many as 13 points in the second half, its lead was trimmed to a single point with 1:12 remaining in regula on. The Grizzlies hit their free throws down the stretch, though, to pull out their narrowest win of the season (92-89). Montana was previously 0-2 in games decided by a single possession. TRIPLE DIGITS Montana scored 109 points in a blowout win over North Dakota (Jan. 4), an offensive performance that was historic on many levels: Montana reached the century mark for the first me since December 2009 vs. Great Falls. It was Montana s first 100-point performance against a Division-I opponent since December 1999 vs. Youngstown State. The 109 points were ed for the third-most in school history, and the most against a Division-I opponent since the Grizzlies scored 109 points against Idaho State, in March FRESHMAN CONNECTION Freshman Karl Nicholas scored a career-high 17 points on a perfect 8-for-8 shoo ng vs. North Dakota (Jan. 4), including four thunderous dunks that brought the crowd to its feet. The first two came on back-to-back possessions, both coming off of turnovers. The next two also came in transi on and were fed by his freshman roommate Timmy Falls. First, Falls delivered a no-look, behind-the-head pass. He followed that up with an alley oop that he lobbed from half court. Nicholas ranks 12th in league play with eight blocked shots. SEASON LOWS Montana s defense held Northern Arizona (Dec. 28) to season lows for field goals (16) and field-goal percentage (.327). Both figures were season lows for UM opponents this season as well. Those marks lasted just two days, however, as the Griz defense was again dominant two days later. Southern Utah (Dec. 30) was held to 49 points, 15 field goals and.263 shoo ng. The 49 points and 15 field goals were the fewest by an opponent since North Dakota scored 46 on 15-of-56 shoo ng on March 3, The fieldgoal percentage was the lowest by an opponent since Montana State shot.259 on Jan. 17, Last week, playing Southern Utah for the second me, the Thunderbirds were held to 47 total points and 15 made field goals once again. WELL CONDITIONED Entering January, Montana had three players who averaged at least 33:00 minutes played per game. Ahmaad Rorie was averaging 36:36 per game, including all 40 minutes vs. UC Santa Barbara (Nov. 21). Fellow juniors Bobby Moorehead (33:50) and Michael Oguine (33:00) were also among the na- on s leaders. In fact, Montana was one of 14 Division-I schools na onally to have three players average 33 minutes per game or be er. NON-CONFERENCE SUCCESS Montana closed its non-conference season with a winning record (7-5) for the first me in six seasons. In fact, despite a storied history that is li ered with conference championships and postseason berths, this season marks just the fi h me since the turn of the century that the Grizzlies have posted a winning non-conference mark. The other mes were in , , and with Montana advancing to the NCAA tournament three of those seasons and the CBI in The feat is even more impressive considering the level of compe on Montana faced. The Grizzlies played four Power-5 opponents (Pi, Penn State, Stanford and Washington, all on the road). The Grizzlies also played six of their first nine games away from home, with an addi onal road game at No. 23 UCLA being canceled once the team was already on site. In addi on to the Power-5 opponents, UC Santa Barbara is off to a 16-5 start while UC Irvine was predicted to win the Big West and Georgia State was selected to finish second in the Sun Belt. NARROW DEFEATS Montana finished non-conference play with its first winning record in six seasons, but the Griz can t help but wonder, What if? as well. Of Montana s five losses, the Grizzlies led or were within a single possession late in the second half in all five games. At Penn State (Big Ten), Montana held early leads and was within a single possession, 58-55, with under 4 minutes to play. In the championship game of the Legends Classic Malibu Region, Montana overcame an 18-point deficit to take the lead, including with 12:51 remaining. At Stanford (Pac-12), Montana held mul ple second-half leads, including by as many as six points, 50-44, with under 10 minutes on the clock. Montana overcame a 17-point hal ime deficit at Georgia State, tying the game and having the ball with under a minute to play. At Washington (Pac-12), Montana led with 4:16 to play and had the chance to e the game with two free-throw opportuni es with 5.1 seconds le on the clock. ROAD WARRIORS The Grizzlies traveled more than 12,000 miles during non-conference play taking two trips to the East Coast, three flights to the state of California and one to nearby Sea le. Through the first 30 days of the regular season, Montana was on the road for 19 of them. Following a season-opening win over Whitworth (Nov. 10), Montana was on a plane nine hours later for a six-day trip to the state of Pennsylvania (Nov ). A er back-to-back games against Power-5 opponents (Pi and Penn State), Montana had two home prac ces before flying to California to con nue the Legends Classic (Nov. 19). The Grizzlies returned from California and had two prac ces in Missou-

9 NOTES 9 la to prepare for Carroll (Nov. 26). Montana had just one day in between its game against Carroll and flying to Stanford (le on Nov. 28). Montana returned from its trip to Stanford and had two home prac ces before hos ng CSUN (Dec. 3). Following its win over CSUN, the Grizzlies had one day at home before flying to UCLA and Georgia State for a six-day road trip (Dec. 5-10). HEARTBREAK VS. THE HUSKIES Montana had several chances at an addi onal non-conference victory over a Power-5 program, taking Washington down to the wire (Dec. 22). In the three-point loss, Montana held mul ple second-half leads, including one with under 4 minutes to play. Despite the loss, Montana out-rebounded the Huskies, 41-27, including 20-6 on the offensive glass. The Grizzlies also had 12 assists compared to Washington s four, and converted 18 turnovers into 24 points. Washington, however, got to the free-throw line 21 mes compared to just six for Montana. DOMINANT DEFENSE In an 18-point win over UC Irvine (Dec. 19), Montana s defense forced 15 turnovers, including three shot-clock viola ons and two 10-second whistles. On offense, the Grizzlies shot be er than 50 percent and scored 86 points (then a season high). A erward, Travis DeCuire said his team s performance was the best of the season, and perhaps the best he s seen his team play in his four years as head coach. Tonight is the first me we ve put 40 minutes together on both sides of the ball, DeCuire said. Our energy and the way we played together, and the way we executed on both sides of the ball, was incredible. I don t know that we ve played this well as a group, as a unit, since I ve been here. HONORING DELVON Prior to Montana s game vs. UC Irvine (Dec. 19), the Grizzlies recognized former player Delvon Anderson, who passed away in August at the age of 47. His family was on the court during a video ceremony and DeCuire and former head coach Blaine Taylor presented them with the Legend of the Game plaque an award given to a former player or coach from each par- cipa ng team in the 2017 Legends Classic tournament. DeCuire and Anderson played together in the early 1990s and Taylor was their coach. He is Montana s winningest coach in school history (.680 winning percentage) and is now an assistant coach at UC Irvine. During Anderson s two-year career at Montana, the Grizzlies won back-to-back Big Sky Conference championships. He was the conference MVP as a senior in Throughout the season, players have worn No. 24 warmup jerseys to honor Anderson. Addi onally, a black stripe has been displayed on the le shoulder of all jerseys, recognizing Anderson and former head coach Jud Heathcote, who also passed away in August. FINALLY A SATURDAY Montana will play at least 11 games on Saturdays this season more than any other day of the week. However, the Grizzlies didn t play a Saturday game un l Dec. 9, a full month into the season. Only Oklahoma played more games to begin the season without a Saturday game. GAME CANCELED Montana was scheduled to play five teams from Power-5 conference this season, but the Grizzlies contest at UCLA (Dec. 6) was canceled due to wildfires that were spreading throughout the area and shut down UCLA s campus. The Griz held one prac ce at Pauley Pavilion and scheduled another at a nearby gym in Los Angeles before depar ng for Atlanta to take on Georgia State. Ironically, there were talks of that game being canceled as well when a rare snowstorm took over the southern region of the United States and closed Georgia State s campus. NICHOLAS FINDING HIS FORM Travis DeCuire had high expecta ons for Karl Nicholas, but the freshman was limited early in the season due to foul trouble. Through his first three career games, Nicholas averaged just 7.7 minutes per game, picking up four fouls in each contest. The Texas na ve had a breakout week in Malibu, Calif., however, playing 18 minutes vs. Oral Roberts (Nov. 20) and 28 minutes vs. UC Santa Barbara (Nov. 21). Nicholas averaged 10.5 points per game over the two contests, connec ng on 10 of 15 shot a empts. He also added nine rebounds in the two games. CLUTCH RORIE Junior guard Ahmaad Rorie has scored in double figures 19 mes this season, averaging 18.6 points per game. The point total is impressive, but more impressive is when he is scoring. Six of Rorie s 18 points at Pi (Nov. 13) came in the over me period, while two nights later at Penn State (Nov. 15), he had four points, a steal and an assist during a 9-0 UM run to cut the Grizzlies deficit to a single point, 51-50, midway through the second half. The all-conference performer was on full display again vs. Oral Roberts (Nov. 20), scoring a team-high 18 points, in addi on to six assists and three steals. Trailing with 8 minutes to play in the first half, Montana closed the half on a 15-6 run. Rorie had nine points and two assists during that run, contribu ng to six of UM s eight made field goals. He was again clutch late, knocking down both free-throw a empts with 22 seconds to play to increase Montana s lead to two possessions. Rorie was named to the Legends Classic Malibu Region All-Tournament team a er playing 75 of 80 minutes and totaling 38 points, 12 assists, seven steals and six rebounds. OGUINE RECOGNIZED BY COLLEGE SPORTS MADNESS Junior guard Michael Oguine was the College Sports Madness Big Sky Player of the Week for games played Nov Oguine scored 29 points in a signature victory at Pi (Nov. 13) and then two days later at Penn State (Nov. 15), totaled 15 points and grabbed seven boards in a narrow loss to the Ni any Lions. A SIGNATURE VICTORY A er coming close, but not close enough, mul ple mes against Power-5 teams, Montana finally got over the hump and knocked off Pi on Nov. 13 in Pi sburgh. The win snapped Montana s 14-game losing streak against Power-5 schools and was the program s first since It marked Montana s first over a team currently in the ACC since Montana led for nearly 24 minutes against Pi, including by as many as seven points. Below are key stats that led the Grizzlies to their signature victory: Montana forced Pi into 19 turnovers, turning them into 30 points.

10 NOTES 10 Two of the turnovers were offensive charges, one taken by Karl Nicholas and another by Fabijan Krslovic. Krslovic finished with a team-most nine rebounds, two blocked shots and two steals. Montana out-rebounded Pi, 39-38, including on the offensive glass. The Grizzlies held the lead for 23:46, compared to 14:07 for the Panthers. Montana overcame foul trouble three players finished the game with four fouls and a slow start at the free-throw line. The Grizzlies began the game just 4-for-11 from the charity stripe before finishing 12-of-14 down the stretch including 10 makes in a row at one point to put the game out of reach. A er trailing by a game-most seven points, 28-21, with under 5 minutes to play in the first half, Montana closed the half on a 16-7 run to head into the intermission leading by two, The Grizzlies started the game 0-for-7 from three-point range before Ahmaad Rorie hit back-to-back threes late in the first half. Bobby Moorehead followed with two more, giving the Grizzlies 12 consecu- ve points off of three-pointers and a advantage. Trailing by four, 69-65, with under 3 minutes to play, Montana went on an 8-2 run over the next 2 minutes to take a advantage. Oguine scored all eight points for the Griz. A er alterna ng baskets to begin over me, Montana scored to take a lead and then held Pi without a made field goal over its final three a empts. PARTIAL ARRIVAL Montana s win at Pi (Nov. 13) was huge for the program. The Grizzlies knocked off an ACC team that has played in 13 of the last 16 NCAA tournaments, on its home court no less. Pi entered the contest with a all- me mark in non-conference games at the Petersen Events Center and had never lost a home opener in the building. The victory, however, will mean li le if the team doesn t use it as a springboard into the rest of the season, par cularly in March. We want to win these games in November so we can win these games in March, Travis DeCuire said a erward, no ng that he schedules games like these in order to prepare his team for Big Sky Conference ac on and, hopefully, the postseason. BIG-GAMER OGUINE Junior guard Michael Oguine scored 29 points (then a career high) in Montana s win at Pi (Nov. 13), but more impressive than the 29 points or team-most five assists was the fact that Oguine took over when it ma ered most. He scored 16 of his points in the final 8:32 of regula on, including Montana s final 10 points overall. Trailing with 4:32 to play, Oguine out-scored Pi s en re team, 10-4, to give Montana a two-point lead in the final minute of regula on. Mike s one of those guys where when he s mad he s be er, Travis DeCuire said. If he thinks it s me to put everybody on his back, he s going to get it done. He carried us when we needed him to. 100 AND COUNTING Nov. 13 was a special night for the Montana basketball program, but for two Grizzlies in par cular. Fabijan Krslovic played in his 100th consecu ve game. The senior from Australia has played in every UM game since the start of the season (now 121, including 105 starts). Addi onally, the game against Pi was Travis DeCuire s 100th game as head coach. The former Griz player was following the signature victory, the fi h-best mark through 100 games out of Montana s 25 head coaches. DeCuire has led Montana to a regular-season conference tle and back-to-back appearances in the Big Sky Conference tournament championship game (2015 and 2016). STARTING STRONG Montana s wins over Whitworth (Nov. 10) and Pi (Nov. 13) gave the Grizzlies their first 2-0 start to a season since the squad began the year with three consecu ve wins. That team finished with a record, winning a Big Sky championship and advancing to the NCAA tournament. WORKING OVERTIME Montana won its first over me game in nearly two years on Nov. 13, defea ng Pi, Prior to that, Montana s last over me victory was a double-over me win at Northern Arizona on Dec. 31, The Grizzlies lost both over me contests in HOME-OPENING SUCCESS With Montana s win over Whitworth (Nov. 10), the Grizzlies improved to 15-3 in home openers since the turn of the century. DEBUTING Montana s season opener vs. Whitworth (Nov. 10) marked collegiate and UM debuts for several Grizzlies. Junior Jamar Akoh, a transfer from Cal State Fullerton, earned the start. Also seeing consistent me were freshmen Timmy Falls and Karl Nicholas. In the final minute of the game, Travis DeCuire inserted Admir Besovic, Niko Bevens and Lars Espe. DEFENSE WINS CHAMPIONSHPS The offense had been clicking, but the defense needed work. That was Travis DeCuire s assessment through the first month of prac ces and scrimmages, leading up to Montana s exhibi on contest vs. Saskatchewan (Nov. 6). DeCuire saw his team s ability to get stops, as Montana held Saskatchewan to 26-percent shoo ng in an exhibi on victory. Leading by just two, 25-23, with under 8 minutes to play in the first half, Montana went on a 36-4 run over the next 14 minutes extending across both periods and did not allow a field goal during that span. The Huskies were 0-for-18 from the floor with 11 turnovers during that stretch. On the evening, Montana forced 12 steals and blocked a dozen shots. ANDERSON SIGNED Montana signed Mack Anderson to a Na onal Le er of Intent on Nov. 8. The Bozeman na ve selected Montana over offers from Montana State and Air Force, and a er visi ng Boise State and Denver. Anderson averaged nearly two blocks per game during the 2017 state tournament, helping Bozeman High School to a runner-up finish at the Montana Class 2A state tournament. A er mostly talking with NAIA schools, Anderson burst onto the scene over the summer while playing for Montana Elite. I like his athle cism and agility, Travis DeCuire said. Not very o en do you get a 6-8 athlete who can run and jump and ball a li le bit. We re excited about what he presents in the future. LOOKING AHEAD Montana con nues its two-game homestand vs. Sacramento State (Saturday, 7 p.m. MT). The game will also be televised by Eleven Sports.

23 PRESEASON NOTES 23 PRESEASON NOTES RETURNING TALENT The Grizzlies have the pieces to contend this season, returning three of their four consistent starters from , in addi on to a pair of guards Sayeed Pridge and Bobby Moorehead who each started about one-third of last year s contests. In total, Montana returns the majority of its produc on in all aspects of the game, bringing back its top two scorers, and four of its top five. On the other end of the floor, Montana had six players with 90 or more rebounds a year ago; five of them are back on the court. NEW GUYS COMING IN While Montana returns the majority of its produc on from a year ago, the team also turned over roughly half of its roster, with several newcomers expected to slide in and fill roles immediately. The Grizzlies signed six freshmen, in addi on to sophomore JUCO transfer Niko Bevens. Admir Besovic Originally from Bosnia and Herzegovina, has spent the past two seasons at the Virginia Episcopal School in Lynchburg, where he averaged 11.2 points and 6.8 rebounds last year as a team captain. Kelby Kramer No. 2 prep prospect from the state of Wyoming, being named to USA Today s All- USA Wyoming Boys Basketball Team Karl Nicholas As the 17th-best prep prospect from the state of Texas, was named the Texas District 22-6A MVP. DYNAMIC DUO, PART II Montana boasts one of the top duos in the Big Sky with junior guards Ahmaad Rorie and Michael Oguine. The two combined to score well over one-third of the team s points a year ago, also ranking No. 1 and 2 for minutes played. A transfer from Oregon, Rorie made a name for himself during his first season in the league, earning second-team All-Big Sky honors. He started all 31 contest, and led the Grizzlies in minutes (32.5 per game), points (17.6), assists (97), field goals made (192), three-pointers (63) and free-throw percent-age (.833). His 1.2 assist-to-turnover ra o helped Montana have the 12th-fewest turnovers in Division I in A er recording the second-most points ever for a Montana freshman, Oguine followed up his debut season with an even be er sophomore campaign. He averaged 11.9 points per game including 13.3 during conference play and shot.481 from the floor. He ranked second on the team for points, re-bounds (6.0 per game) and steals (37), and earned third-team all-conference honors. Both players have been named to various publica ons preseason all-conference teams, with Rorie being one of six players selected to the official preseason All-Big Sky team voted on by the league s coaches. FABULOUS SENIOR Montana s lone senior is Australian Fabijan Krslovic, who entered the season having played in 100 consecu ve games star ng 83. Krslovic was Montana s top rebounder in , with more than one-third of his boards coming on the offensive glass. He also led Montana with 15 steals and 20 blocked shots and was one of just three Big Sky players to rank in the top 15 in the conference for both categories. Krslovic will admit he s not the most athle c player on the court, but he s consistent and is the glue of the team, according to the coaching staff. A er being forced to be more of a center last year because of Montana s lack of height, he will now transi on into a more natural role as a 6-8 forward. 24 as Montana s only true post player. This year, he is one of five players at 6-8 or taller. It was a conscious effort by DeCuire, looking to add more height and depth to his team s roster. Admir Besovic (7-0) and Kelby Kramer (6-10) are s ll raw as true freshmen, adjus ng to the quicker style of play in the college game, but both can play a true center posi on. Kramer is more of a shot-blocker and rebounder, while Besovic has the ability to clog the lane and make it tough for opposing offenses to penetrate to the rim. Montana believes it has a solid low-presence combina on of Krslovic and transfer Jamar Akoh, and also has 6-8 Karl Nicholas, who can be an athle c force on both ends of the court. MORE RETURNING TALENT In addi on to Montana s senior and pair of all-conference guards, the team returns three other players, including Sayeed Pridge and Bobby Moorehead. As a true freshman, Pridge earned 11 starts and ranked ninth in the Big Sky with a.524 field-goal percentage. He was also the team s third-best rebounder (3.9 per game) and ranked fourth on the team for points (8.1 per game) and assists (44). In his second collegiate season, Moorehead started 10 games and averaged 2.8 rebounds per game while adding 3.9 points, 10 total steals and nine blocked shots. Sophomore guard Trever Spoja is also back. The Billings na ve saw ac on in eight contests as a redshirt freshman, totaling 10 points on 3-of-7 shoo ng. STARTING THEM YOUNG Montana is one of 11 NCAA Division I schools na onally to have at least nine newcomer and just one senior. Kentucky leads the na on with 12 newcomers and zero seniors, while Auburn has a dozen newcomers and one senior. Tennessee, Toledo and Wofford each have 10 newcomers and one senior, while Montana, Bowling Green, Holy Cross, Kansas State, Louisiana Tech and Oklahoma have nine new players and one expected graduate. DORSEY TO MISS SEASON The Grizzlies will be without junior forward Donaven Dorsey this season. Dorsey, who redshirted in a er transferring from the University of Washington, suffered a pair of hip injuries that require separate surgeries. The first was performed on Oct. 23. He played in 55 games over two seasons with the Huskies, earning eight starts. He totaled 166 points and 77 rebounds. PICKED TO FINISH 3RD Montana has high expecta ons for itself, and those who follow Big Sky basketball feel similar. In the preseason polls, Montana was picked to finish third by both the coaches and media. The Grizzlies were slo ed to finish behind Idaho and Weber State in both polls (complete lis ng on Page 23). Travis DeCuire said being picked to finish in the upper echelon is a sign of respect, but he and his team have their own set of goals, especially a er winning a regular-season championship in 2015 and playing in the conference tournament tle game in both 2015 and TOUGH SCHEDULE A year ago, Travis DeCuire believed he compiled the most-challenging schedule in program history, facing an all-division-i slate. This year, it may NOTES 24 be even tougher. The Grizzlies open the season with 13 non-conference games, five of which are against Power-5 teams. The team s first road trip is at Pi (ACC) and Penn State (Big Ten) part of the pres gious Legends Classic. The tournament will con nue the following week in Malibu, Calif., as Montana takes on Oral Roberts and either UC Santa Barbara or host Pepperdine. The Grizzlies will get their air miles several weeks later, traveling to Georgia State, in addi on to three contests against Pac-12 foes Stanford, UCLA and Washington. The Bruins are ranked in the AP pre-season top-25 poll. In Missoula, Montana will host Cal State Northridge, Carroll, UC Irvine, UC Riverside and Whitworth. The 18-game league schedule will begin Dec. 28 and include home-and-home contests against Montana State, North Dakota, Northern Arizona, Northern Colorado, Portland State, Sacramento State and Southern Utah. Montana will also will travel to Eastern Washington and Idaho, and will host Idaho State and Weber State to close the regular season. The Big Sky Conference tournament will be held in Reno, Nev., for the final year before moving to Boise, Idaho, next spring. TEAM BONDING IN COSTA RICA The Grizzlies got a head start to the basketball season, taking a foreign tour to Costa Rica in early Au-gust. The NCAA allows for teams to par cipate in such trips once every four years. The trip was beneficial in several facets. In addi on to key bonding me being in a foreign country with your teammates and being able to partake in several ac vi es, including pool me and a zip line through a jungle and service ini a ves the team spent a day at an orphanage, playing sports with the children and reading to them the team also competed in a pair of scrimmages and was allo ed 10 prac ces in Missoula leading up to the trip. The tour allowed for Travis DeCuire to introduce concepts to his team par- cularly the newcomers much earlier than he usually would, and noted that the team was ahead of where they normally were early in fall camp. SECURING THE BALL Montana averaged just 10.8 turnovers per game a year ago, the 12th-fewest in all of NCAA Division I basketball. PROUD HISTORY Travis DeCuire is well aware of Montana s proud history, and has experienced it firsthand. During the 1990s, Montana won the Big Sky Conference and played in the NCAA tournament three mes in a seven-year period, including DeCuire s sophomore campaign. The two- me All-Big Sky selec on s ll holds Montana s record for career assists. Since Montana s first conference championship in 1975, no Big Sky team has won more conference les (10) than Montana. Addi onally, the Grizzlies have won nine tournament tles and have nine runner-up finishes including three championships and three runner-up finishes in the past eight sea-sons. In the league s history, Montana has won more games than any Big Sky school except for Weber State. DECUIRE REACHES MILESTONE Midway through last season, DeCuire s third in Missoula, the Grizzlies defeated Northern Colorado to earn the head coach his 50th victory. He is the second-fastest Griz coach to reach that milestone (84 games). The fastest to 50 was Blaine Taylor, DeCuire s head coach when he played for the Griz.

28 TRAVIS DECUIRE Head Coach Fourth Season Montana, 1994 HEAD COACH TRAVIS DECUIRE 28 In his first two seasons as the University of Montana s 27th men s head basketball coach, Travis DeCuire accomplished something no other coach in UM history had: he posted two 20-win seasons in his first two seasons. Now entering the fourth season at his alma mater, DeCuire is once again poised to put the Grizzlies back on the road to a 20-win campaign. DeCuire (pronounced: dee-cure) was formally introduced as the Grizzlies head basketball coach in June 2014, at a press conference at UM s Adams Center a er the ini al announcement from UM s Director of Athle cs Kent Haslam in May of that year. In his first season at the helm of a program with a rich history of success, DeCuire s Griz started the year picked to finish eighth in the conference. Led by future European professional Jordan Gregory, UM would go on to defy expecta ons and win the Big Sky regular-season championship and advance to the Na onal Invita onal Tournament (NIT) before finishing the season (14-4 BSC). At the me, he became only the second coach in UM history to notch 20 victories in his first season at the helm a feat also accomplished by Blaine Taylor in (27-4). In DeCuire s second year, he followed up with another 20-win season and another trip to the Big Sky championship game, this me led by future European professional Mar- n Breunig. DeCuire s Grizzlies would once again advance to the postseason, compe ng in the first round of the CBI tournament against Nevada, finishing with a (14-4 BSC) record. Paced by 10 underclassmen and just two seniors who played significant me, the Grizzlies went (11-7 BSC) in , earning a first-round bye in the Big Sky tournament. During the season, DeCuire became the second-fastest UM head coach to reach 50 wins (doing so in 84 contests). He coached a pair of UM sophomores both returning in to All-Big Sky Conference recogni on. The season was also the second consecu ve year in which the Grizzlies have posted a team grade-point average above 3.0, earning NABC Team Academic Excellence recogni on both seasons. At GRCC, DeCuire took over a last-place program and guided it to a conference championship and its first 20-win season in more than 20 years, earning league coach-of-the-year honors in 2003 his second season. At Sammamish High School in Bellevue, DeCuire led his team to a pair of conference tles, a state tournament appearance and three consecu ve trips to the district tournament. As a point guard for Montana from DeCuire was named All-Big Sky Conference as a junior and senior. He set a school record in just three seasons with 435 career assists. He also established UM s single-season mark with 199 assists as a senior in , when he was ranked 12th in the na on, averaging 7.1 assists a game. He was the recipient of the Grizzlies Carl Dragstedt Award (MVP) as a junior and senior, and received the John Eaheart Award (Outstanding Defensive Player) following his senior year. As a freshman at Chaminade-Hawaii, he was a starter and team MVP in He then transferred to Montana and redshirted in DeCuire a ended Mercer Island High School (Wash.), where he was a three-year starter and all-state, team MVP, and a McDonald s All-America honorable men on pick as a senior. He has a strong commitment to community service and founded and acted as president of the Fastbreak Basketball Associa on an organiza on that assists in teaching life lessons and building self-esteem through basketball to more than 500 students in the Sea le-tacoma area.
