The Blue Devils have won 18 of the last 19 home non-conference games and 14 in a row... Mistie Williams has moved into eighth place on Duke s all-time rebounding list (678)... Duke has collected a school record tying six 100-point games... the Maryland at Duke contest on Feb. 13 will now be played at 7:00 p.m. instead of 7:30 p.m.... after finishing the season with only eight players in , the Blue Devils feature a roster of 13 this year. Storylines... Duke will embark on one of the toughest stretches a Blue Devil squad has ever played in the regular season as the Blue Devils will face top-ranked Tennessee and fourth-ranked North Carolina in the same week, while also traveling to face Clemson. Blue Devil senior Mistie Williams picked Duke over Tennessee in the recruiting process. All-America Monique Currie continues to move up the ACC career scoring list as each game passes. Currie currently owns 1,826 points and is 21st. She needs 17 more points to pass Tammi Reiss of Virginia (1842). Duke and Tennessee have played three common opponents-- Maryland, Texas and Old Dominion. In the latest, GBallmag.com Poll, Duke is ranked No. 1 and Tennessee is No. 2. The last and only time Duke and Tennessee have played in Durham, N.C., was on Jan. 24, 2004 when Alana Beard had her jersey retired prior to the game. Both Duke (43.1) and Tennessee (40.8) are hitting over 40.0 percent from three-point land. Duke is two wins shy of posting its 10th consecutive 20-win season. The Blue Devils own a 6-3 record at Cameron Indoor Stadium when there are crowd is over 8,000. A Look At Tennessee... Tennessee enters Monday with an 18-0 record and is led by Shanna Zolman (15.7 pts., 45 treys), Candace Parker (14.9 pts., 8.4 rbs.) and Alexis Hornbuckle (10.6 pts., 69 assists). Head Coach Pat Summitt is coming off picking up her 900th career victory on Thursday at Vanderbilt as the Lady Vols won Tennessee owns a 7-0 record this season against ranked opponents. The Series With Tennessee... Tennessee leads the overall series 4-3 and will be playing in Durham, N.C., for the second time in the series. In , the Lady Vols traveled to Durham and knocked off top-ranked Duke, 72-69, on Jan. 24. Last season, the Blue Devils returned the favor traveling to Knoxville, Tenn., and registered a win over Tennessee. 4 Duke Women s Basketball Game Notes Tennessee at Duke Duke Versus No The Blue Devils will face the a top-ranked team for only the third time in school history on Monday against Tennessee. The other times Duke went up against a No. 1 ranked team was on Mar. 28, 1999, in the National Championship game against Purdue. Duke lost in San Jose, Calif. The Blue Devils traveled to top-ranked Connecticut on January 3, 2004, and defeated the Huskies, 68-67, on Jessica Foley s three-pointer as time expired. Against Ranked Opponents... Duke owns a record of in games against ranked opponents under Head Coach Gail Goestenkors, but over the last five years the Blue Devils are against ranked foes. So far in , Duke is 3-0 against ranked foes. The Blue Devils are coming off posting a 12-5 ledger against teams ranked, which included a school-record 12 victories, in In the three contests against ranked foes this season, the Blue Devils are averaging 78.7 points, hitting 50.3 percent from the field and nailing 40.0 percent from downtown. Wins Last Six Years... Duke owns the second-most victories over the last six years among Division I squads-- Connecticut (179-18), Duke (175-19), Tennessee (172-22). Blue Devils Versus The Lady Vols... In three career games against the Lady Vols, Monique Currie has averaged 15.0 points, 5.7 rebounds and 1.0 steals a contest. Currie has scored 20 and 18 points in the last two meetings. Jessica Foley is coming off scoring 11 points, grabbing seven rebounds and hitting three treys in 39 minutes. Mistie Williams had her best game of her career against Tennessee last year with 14 points, 10 rebounds and two blocks in 33 minutes. The Injury Report... Sophomore Chante Black missed the Holy Cross game on Jan.16 with a sore foot but returned to action against N.C. State playing 24 minutes, while scoring 11 points, grabbing six rebounds and blocking four shots. At Georgia Tech, Jessica Foley suffered a broken nose and at Boston College Monique Currie received a black eye. Both are fine and will play on Thursday versus NCSU. The status of freshman Keturah Jackson is doubtful for the Tennessee game due to an injured left foot. Freshman Brittany Mitch had surgery on her hip Dec. 2 and is expected to start practicing again in a few days. Harding Stepping Up In ACC Action... Since ACC action has started, junior point guard Lindsey Harding has stepped up her play averaging 14.2 points, 4.0 rebounds, 4.2 assists, 2.2 steals, while hitting 54.5 percent from the field and 46.2 percent from downtown against ACC foes. Harding has scored double-figure points in each of the six ACC contests including 19 points at sixth-ranked Maryland and 18 points at 22nd-ranked Boston College. She returned this season after missing all of last year and is establishing herself as the best all-around point guard in the nation. On the season, she is averaging 11.2 points, 4.2 assists, 3.6 rebounds and 1.9 steals in only 25.8 minutes over the first 18 contests. Prior to , Harding had hit only 8-of-42 three-pointers in her career at Duke, but she worked very hard on her shot last year and over the summer. In the first 18 games, she has hit 17-of-28 from downtown and is making 60.7 percent from downtown. Harding is also widely known as one of the best defenders in the nation. Her 60.7 three-point field goal percentage leads the ACC, while she ranks seventh in assists and first in assist/turnover ratio (2.71). Harding also ranks in the top 10 in the nation in assist/turnover ratio. Harding has scored double-figures in 10 of 18 games. Duke/Tennessee Sold Out... The Duke University Athletics Ticket Office announced on Jan. 9 that the January 23 women s basketball game between the Blue Devils and Tennessee at Cameron Indoor Stadium was sold out. The official announcement marked the third time in the program s history that a women s basketball game has sold out ahead of time in the 9,314-seat historic Cameron Indoor Stadium. Duke had its first two capacity crowds in back-to-back years hosting Connecticut on Feb. 1, 2003 and Tennessee on Jan. 24, Overall, Duke has now registered five sellouts in school history. Senior Monique Currie has had to get adjusted to playing less minutes this season due to the increase in roster size to 13. Currie is averaging a career-low 25.8 minutes a contest, but is producing when in the game. So far this season, Currie is averaging 15.4 points, 5.6 rebounds, 3.5 assists and 1.5 steals in 18 starts. The 2005 runner-up for National Player of the Year is also shooting the ball the best of her collegiate years as she is hitting 52.0 percent of her field goals. On the year, Currie has hit 24 of 45 treys for a 53.3 percentage. Over the first three years of college, she hit only 44 of 158 three-point attempts for a 27.8 percentage. In an average of 40 minutes a contest, Currie is averaging 23.8 points, 8.7 rebounds, 5.4 assists and 2.3 steals. Currie has played her best this season against ranked opponents as she has averaged 20.3 points, 5.0 rebounds, 3.0 assists and 1.0 steals. Last Game Versus Tennessee... Led by 20 points from Monique Currie, No. 10 Duke upset fourth-ranked Tennessee, 59-57, in Knoxville, Tenn. The Lady Vols shot 28 percent (21-of-75) and lost at home for only the 14th time since Thompson-Boling Arena opened in Currie scored 16 of her points in the second half and had nine rebounds to lead the Blue Devils. She had six points in the final 1:41 as Duke became only the seventh visiting team to win at Thompson-Boling. Besides Duke and Connecticut, which won here last season, the Lady Vols have dropped games to Texas, Louisiana Tech, Auburn, Georgia and Stanford. Mistie Williams added 14 points and 10 rebounds for her third double-double this season, and Jessica Foley had 11 points for the Blue Devils. The lead changed hands several times down the stretch, but the Blue Devils made baskets when they needed them. Currie converted two free throws to put Duke ahead 55-53, but Tye sha Fluker made a putback to tie it. Currie made a jumper at the other end, but Shyra Ely scored on a putback to tie it at 57 with 47.9 seconds left. On This Date... January 23 Duke has posted a 5-2 record in games played on Jan. 23 over the years... one of the notable games was in 1994 when Tyish Hall scored 27 points, had 10 rebounds and three steals as Duke knocked off Clemson, 74-67, on its home court... Hilary Howard scored 20 points and Nicole Erickson added 18 points as Duke defeated Virginia in the Blue Devils shot 51.7 percent from the field in the contest. In 2003, Duke had its largest margin of victory against Maryland as the Blue Devils rolled to a win in Durham, N.C.... six different Blue Devils scored doublefigures led by Iciss Tillis with 19 points... Duke shot 58.7 percent from the field and dished out 26 assists. The first ever contest on this date was in 1980 as Barb Krause totaled a double-double with 11 points and 14 rebounds before fouling out, while Lisa Warren added 16 points as the Blue Devils downed Virginia,

5 Duke Women s Basketball Game Notes Tennessee at Duke 5 At the other end, Currie drove to the basket for an easy layup that put the Blue Devils ahead for good. Williams then missed a free throw, but Shanna Zolman missed two three-pointers in the final 13 seconds. Zolman scored 17 of her 19 points after halftime, and Ely finished with 15 points and eight rebounds. Tennessee leads the series 4-3 after the teams first meeting in Knoxville. The Lady Vols led by as many as six points in the second half after going on a 10-4 run out of the break. Duke responded with a 10-3 run that included eight points by Foley to retake the lead with 12:09 remaining. Duke At Home... Duke owns an 8-0 record at home this season and have won games by a 46.2 average. The Blue Devils have shot 54.2 percent from the field, 42.3 percent from three-point range, dished out 26.1 assists, blocked 10.0 shots, grabbed 14.3 steals and averaging 85.2 points. Opponents are shooting only 29.9 percent from the field, averaged 49.0 points and are getting outrebounded by 15.9 a contest. The Cameron Advantage... Since Gail Goestenkors arrived in 1992, Cameron Indoor Stadium has proven to give the Blue Devils an extra advantage as they have recorded an unbelievable record. Coach G has also posted a record dating back to the season. The Blue Devils recorded a 20-game winning streak at home in ACC action from December 22, 1997, through February 3, 2000, and had an ACC-record 33-game streak from Feb. 15, 2001, through Feb. 27, Goestenkors has totaled an 84-7 record against non-conference opponents in Cameron with the only losses coming to Boston College, Virginia Tech, UCLA, San Francisco, South Carolina, Connecticut and Tennessee. Coach G has posted a overall record against ranked opponents in Cameron, but has won 22 of the last 26, dating back to Last Time Out... Home sweet home. The Duke women s basketball team played at Cameron Indoor Stadium for the first time in two weeks after a four-game road trip and celebrated the occasion by defeated local rival N.C. State Thursday night in ACC action. Monique Currie led the Blue Devils with 20 points while Chante Black (11) and Lindsey Harding also reached double figures. All 11 players that saw action scored as Abby Waner added nine, Alison Bales and Wanisha Smith six apiece, Jessica Foley five, Mistie Williams four and Emily Waner, Laura Kurz and Carrem Gay two each. Harding added a game-high seven assists while Williams reached double figures in rebounds with 10. Bales and Black each recorded four blocks for the nation s best blocking team while Foley led Duke with three steals. After the Wolfpack scored the game s first basket, Duke quickly countered with a 9-0 run to go up by seven less than three minutes into the game. Currie scored the game s first seven points with two long two-pointers and a three-pointer in that run. The Duke lead remained just under double digits until Abby Waner hit a three-pointer that spurred a 7-0 run and Duke led mid way through the first half. Another Abby Waner triple gave Duke its big lead of the half at and Duke held a lead at halftime. N.C. State opened the second half on a 12-4 run and cut the Duke lead to four at before Duke scored seven straight and 11 of the next 13 points to hold a lead. After a three-point play by the Wolfpack, Duke went on a 19-6 run to put the game out of reach and give Duke its big lead at with four minutes remaining. Duke would hit its free throws down the stretch for the 20- point, victory. Duke Concludes Road Trip... The Blue Devils concluded their four-game road trip on Monday at Holy Cross. It marked the longest road trip for Duke since , when the squad coached by Debbie Leonard had a five-game road swing. Leonard coached the Blue Devils to a 2-3 record on the trip, winning the first two contests. Devilish Defense... Duke s defense in is one of the best in the nation. So far on the year, the Blue Devils have forced 20 or more turnovers in 15 of the 18 games played. The opponents are averaging 22.8 turnovers a game and scoring 53.4 points. Duke is holding its opponents to 32.3 percent from the field, which leads the ACC and ranks among the top in the nation. Block Queen... Junior Alison Bales became Duke s all-time blocked shots leader after collecting five blocks at Holy Cross on Jan. 16. Bales now owns 219 career blocks in three years passing Sarah Sullivan (212), who played from Bales has now moved into fifth place on the ACC career blocks list and is 27 shy of moving into a tie for fourth. On the season, Bales leads the ACC and ranks eighth in the nation with 3.1 blocks a contest. Bales owns 55 blocks, which is five more than Duke s opponents have registered and more than three ACC schools (Boston College, Virginia and WFU). ACC Domination... Over the last six years, Duke has dominated ACC action posting a 78-5 overall record. The next closest team is North Carolina (59-20) followed by N.C. Over the last six years, Duke owns a 78-5 record in ACC regular season contests and an overall 90-6 mark including ACC Tournament games. The Blue Devils have only lost to North Carolina (three in ) and Florida State (one in ). In and , the Blue Devils went 16-0 during the ACC regular season and had an ACC-record 51-game win streak versus ACC foes from Since , Duke has dominated ACC action, notching a regular season record. The Blue Devils won five straight ACC Tournament titles from and have won the ACC regular season title five consecutive years. In the individual rankings, Alison Bales is eighth in blocks (3.0). On The 18-Game Win Streak... Second-ranked Duke has opened the season with a 18-game win streak heading into Monday s contest with Tennessee. The Blue Devils have posted some very impressive numbers so far on the year-- averaging 91.7 points, 23.6 assists, 7.9 blocks, hitting 53.1 percent of field goals, 43.1 percent from downtown and outscoring opponents by 38.3 points. Duke has played 12 student-athletes so far this season, and nobody is averaging more than 25.8 minutes a contest, while all 12 players are seeing action in 9.9 minutes or more. High Scoring Affairs... The Blue Devils have kicked off the season with some very impressive offensive outputs. In 18 contests, the team has scored 90 or more points 10 times. After working very hard over the summer to get in better shape and improve her post moves, senior Mistie Williams continues to register some of the best numbers of her career. On the season, Williams is averaging 11.1 points, 5.6 rebounds, 1.7 assists and 0.8 blocks in 21.7 minutes. Williams has scored double-figures in 12 of 18 contests and grabbed four or more rebounds in 14 of 18 games. She is hitting 64.0 percent of her field goals and a career-best 70.2 percent from the charity stripe. Checking out her averages per 40 minutes points, 10.3 rebounds, 3.2 assists, 1.5 blocks and 1.3 steals. Busy January... For only the second time under Head Coach Gail Goestenkors, Duke will play 10 games in the month of January. In the first season with Coach G at the helm in , the Blue Devils played 10 games in the month and finished with a 2-8 ledger. So far this season, Duke has played 18 regular season contests. During those games, the Blue Devils have registered some very impressive runs. Overall, Duke has collected 26 different runs of 10 or more. A full list of runs is on page eight of the notes. Currie Collects Triple-Double... For only the second time in Duke history and 10th time in ACC history, senior Monique Currie collected a triple-double on Jan. 5 against Florida State with 21 points, 12 rebounds and 11 assists in 35 minutes. The other Duke triple-double came on March 11, 1987, when Katie Meier collected 16 points, 11 rebounds and 10 assists against Manhattan. The last triple-double in the ACC came on Feb. 23, 2002, as Milli Martinez of Georgia Tech had 12 points, 10 rebounds and 10 assists. Duke Claims Surf N Slam Title... The Blue Devils traveled to San Diego, Calif., after the Christmas break and demolished the competition, claiming the Surf N Slam Classic title with a 48-point victory over St. John s and a 67-point win over host San Diego. Duke averaged 112 points a game. Undefeated Starts... For the second time under Head Coach Gail Goestenkors, the Blue Devils have started the season with an 18-0 record. The best undefeated start in school history was 20-0 in Experienced Group... On any given night the Blue Devils could throw out a different starting lineup on the court as Duke returns seven players who have started for the Blue Devils over the last two years. Duke is the only team in NCAA Division I who have five players who started 30 or more games last season. In fact, the Blue Devils return six players who started 30 or more games with the return of Lindsey Harding, who started 33 games in Overall, Monique Currie (36), Mistie Williams (36), Wanisha Smith (35), Jessica Foley (32) and Alison Bales (33) each are returning starters from a year ago. A total of 27 teams in NCAA Division I returned all five starters from Sharp-Shooters... For the first time in school history, Duke opened the season hitting 50.0 percent of its field goals in each of the first four games before shooting 40.9 percent against Auburn on Nov. 27 and 47.8 at Texas. The Blue Devils came back to shoot 50.0 percent or better in eight contests before hitting a season-low 32.8 percent at Georgia Tech on Jan. 11. Duke has now shot 50.0 percent or better in 13 of the 18 contests. Duke is shooting a whopping 53.1 percent from the field and 43.1 percent from three-point land. The season record for best field goal percentage is 49.0 in Nine of the 12 Duke players are shooting over 50.0 percent from the field. Balanced Scoring... Over the first 18 contests, top-ranked Duke has used a very well-balanced scoring attack with 12 players averaging 2.5 points or more. Senior Monique Currie is leading the way with 15.4 per game. Currie leads the team with 25.8 minutes a game, and the Blue Devils have 12 players who are playing 9.9 minutes or more. Duke owns three other players averaging doublefigure points-- Mistie Williams (11.1), Lindsey Harding (11.2) and Abby Waner (10.2). The Record Book... Senior Monique Currie is moving her way up the Duke and ACC career charts and currently owns 1,826 points over her four years. With her 20 points at Boston College, Currie moved past Sue Harnett (1,785) for third place on Duke s scoring chart. Among many other career lists at Duke, Currie is sixth on the steals chart with 207 and fifth in rebounds (772). In the ACC career lists, Currie is 22nd in scoring (1,826), 13th in free throws attempted (589) and fifth in free throws made (456). Junior Alison Bales has moved into sixth place on the ACC career blocks list with 218. Duke Remains No. 2 In AP Poll... Duke remained No. 2 in the Associated Press poll which was released on Monday, Jan. 16. The Blue Devils received nine first place votes this week with Tennessee earning 34. 8 Duke Women s Basketball Game Notes Tennessee at Duke Senior Class Award Nominees... The top 30 female candidates for the Bayer Advantage Senior CLASS award have been released with Duke s Monique Currie and Mistie Williams each selected. The award, now in its fifth year, is presented annually to the nation s senior player-of-the-year for NCAA Division I men s and women s basketball. From the list of 30 nominees for each gender, a national media committee will select 10 finalists for the award in February as the conference season hits its peak. Those ten names will be placed on the official ballot for a nationwide voting process during the NCAA Tournament in March. Fan balloting will be coupled with results from voting by coaches and media to determine the male and female winner. Coach G Named USA Coach of the Year USA Basketball U19 World Championship Team head coach Gail Goestenkors of Duke University (N.C.) was named the 2005 USA Basketball National Coach of the Year after piloting the USA U19 women to the 2005 FIBA U19 World Championship and an overall record of 13-1 on the summer, USA Basketball announced this week. As recipient of USA Basketball s National Coach of the Year award, which was selected by the USA Basketball Executive Committee, Goestenkors has been nominated by USA Basketball for the U.S. Olympic Committee s 2005 (USOC) National Coach of the Year award, which will be announced by the USOC at a later date. Goestenkors guided the U.S. to the gold medal and a perfect 8-0 record at the U19 Worlds in Tunis, Tunisia, after posting a 5-1 record, including a 4-0 slate and the gold medal at the International Sports Invitational, during U19 World Championship preparations. Blue Devils Win The Duke Classic... For the 14th time, the Blue Devils claimed the title of the Duke Women s Basketball Classic over the weekend by knocking off Arkansas State and Auburn. Junior Lindsey Harding claimed MVP accolades over the weekend after averaging 13.5 points, 5.0 assists, 3.5 rebounds and 1.5 steals in the two victories. Duke began the tournament back in 1988 and has hosted the classic each year except for the 2004 season. The Blue Devils have claimed titles every year except for 1990 (Purdue), 1991 (Seton Hall) and 2001 (South Carolina). The Exhibition Contests... In two exhibition contests, the Blue Devils averaged 117 points, hit 58.2 percent from the field, 40.0 percent from three-point land and outscored opponents by a 66.0 clip. Duke defeated EA Sports, , in the first game and then knocked off Lander, , in the final exhibition game. The Blue Devils averaged eight players in double-figures with Alison Bales (17.5 points, 5.0 blocks), Mistie Williams (16.0 points, 7.0 rebounds), Laura Kurz (13.0 points, 4.0 rebounds) and Carrem Gay (12.5 points and 8.0 rebounds) leading the way. Duke averaged 11.5 blocks per contest and outrebounded the teams by a 34.0 margin. Looking Up... The Blue Devils own one of the tallest squads in the nation this season with an average height of ( feet) inches. It ranks only behind Tennessee (73.55) and Auburn (73.18), while the next closest ACC team is Florida State tied for 13th with a ledger. Young Guns... The Blue Devils boast one of the most talented teams in the nation but also are one of the youngest squads with four freshmen and four sophomores on the roster. Air Force stands as the youngest team in the nation with 13 freshmen and sophomores, but Duke is tied for 32nd with eight. For the sixth time over the last eight years, the Duke Women s Basketball team has been picked No. 1 in the preseason Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) poll as the Blue Devils received 30 of 40 first-place votes, determined by a vote of the media and head coaches. North Carolina, who received 10 first-place votes, followed the Blue Devils in the balloting, while Maryland finished third. NC State and Boston College were selected to finish in fourth and fifth place, respectively. Florida State was sixth, followed in the seventh and eighth slots by the Virginia Tech and Virginia. Wake Forest finished in ninth place while Georgia Tech, Miami and Clemson rounded out the poll. In balloting for the preseason All-Conference team, senior Monique Currie of Duke and Tamara James (Miami) were named to the team along with Ivory Latta (UNC), Shay Doron (MD), Crystal Langhorne (MD) and Erlana Larkins (UNC). 12 Gail Goestenkor ors Head Coach 14th Year At Duke In her 13 years at Duke University, Gail Goestenkors has helped lead the Blue Devils from relative obscurity to national prominence. Known as Coach G to players, coaches, fans and student supporters, Goestenkors has raised the level of the women s basketball program at Duke to new heights. Today, because of Coach G, Duke is mentioned in the same breath with the other elite programs in women s college basketball. Since arriving at Duke in 1992, Goestenkors has accomplished feats that no other women s basketball coach in school history has been able to achieve. To put her success in perspective, Goestenkors has four more winning seasons (12) than there were in the 17 years prior to her arrival in Durham. The 1996, 98, 99, 2002, 2003 and 2004 ACC Coach of the Year (Duke s only multiple winner of the award and one of just two ACC coaches to earn it six times), Goestenkors led the Blue Devils to their first appearances in the Sweet Sixteen, Elite Eight, Final Four and National Championship game. Along with capturing Duke s first ACC Tournament Championship, Goestenkors Blue Devil squads have broken numerous school, ACC and NCAA records, as well as setting a new standard for women s basketball at Duke and in the ACC. Continuing to build upon her well-earned reputation as one of the top college basketball coaches, Goestenkors led Duke to its fifth-straight ACC Regular Season title and an NCAA Elite Eight appearance in The Blue Devils concluded the season with a 31-5 overall record and were ranked No. 1 in the nation for three straight weeks. For the season, Duke blocked an NCAA-record 267 shots in a year where it was possibly Goestenkors best coaching job of her career after losing three starters off of last year s team. If the past seven seasons show anything, they show how effective Goestenkors winning approach has been. Goestenkors record for highest winning percentage (.782) in school history offers evidence of her success: 333 total wins; a 80-7 mark at home against non-conference opponents; a record in NCAA Tournament play; five straight 30-win seasons; ten 20-plus win seasons in the past 11 years; five ACC Tournament Championships; seven ACC regular season titles; and three NCAA Final Four appearances. Such accomplishments have not gone unnoticed by her peers in college basketball. Aside from winning ACC Coach of the Year in 1996, 98, 99, 2002, 2003 and 2004, Goestenkors captured the Victor Award in 1999 as the National Coach of the Year, as well as being selected the 2000 Basketball Times National Coach of the Year, the 2002 GBallmag.com National Coach of the Year and 2003 Naismith, WBCA/Rawlings and Victor Award as the National Coach of the Year. Her coaching is so respected that Goestenkors was named to the USA Basketball Collegiate Committee in the summer of 2001, was an assistant coach on the gold medal winning 2002 USA World Championship team, was an assistant coach on the gold medal winning 2004 USA Olympic team and was the coach of the 2005 USA World Championship gold medal team. When Goestenkors came to Duke in 1992, she found a women s program hoping to establish itself as a winner while the Blue Devil faithful were in the midst of celebrating the second consecutive NCAA Championship won by coach Mike Krzyzewski and the men s basketball team. Hoping to mirror the success of Coach K and his program, Goestenkors wanted to give Duke fans reason to cheer for her women s team. While success stories do not just happen overnight, it did not take long for Goestenkors to establish a winning attitude with the Blue Devils. In her inaugural season Duke started out strong with seven straight wins, which at that time was the third longest streak in school history. The squad, which featured only eight healthy players, broke four program records during the course of the season. That year, , Duke finished with a record for its first winning season since Also, the Blue Devils won seven ACC contests, the most wins by the school in nearly a decade. The next season proved to be the emergence of Duke women s basketball under Goestenkors onto the national scene. At the time, the Blue Devils set school records for most wins in a season (22) and ACC victories (10). After Duke s first ever appearance in the ACC Championship game, Goestenkors and the Blue Devils appeared in the NCAA Tournament for only the second time in program history. Duke earned its first national ranking since 1989, while Goestenkors was named 1995 WBCA District III Coach of the Year. In , Goestenkors and the Blue Devils wanted to prove that the previous year was no fluke and that Duke women s basketball would be a major force in the years to come. Finishing the year 26-7, 12-4 in the ACC, the Blue Devils had back-to-back 20-win seasons for the first time ever at Duke. Making their second straight appearance in the NCAA Tournament, the Blue Devils hosted first and second round games at Cameron Indoor Stadium for the first time since For her efforts, Goestenkors was recognized as ACC Coach of the Year after leading Duke to a No. 13 ranking in the final polls from both USA Today and the Associated Press. Throughout the season the Blue Devils were a mainstay in the polls, peaking at 13th nationally and finishing the season at 22nd nationally. At the end of the season, Goestenkors was named head coach of the USA Basketball Jones Cup Team, which consists of American college all-stars who compete against other nations. The team went on to capture a silver medal in Taiwan. Three former Blue Devils, Tyish Hall, Kira Orr and VanGorp, joined Goestenkors in representing Duke on that squad. Following several years of success with the Blue Devils, Goestenkors reached some personal milestones in the season. In a win on December 6 against Ohio in the Duke Women s Basketball Classic, Goestenkors notched her 100th career victory. Ironically, the win came against Marsha Reall, who was Goestenkors collegiate coach at Saginaw Valley State. Goestenkors also finished the season with at least 20 wins for the third time in her career, the most for one coach in school history. Once again the Blue Devils enjoyed a highly successful season under Goestenkors, going 24-8 and advancing to the Elite Eight in NCAA Tournament action for the first time in school history. Of course, the next year Goestenkors led Duke all the way to the championship game. It proved to be another step in the rise of the women s basketball program under Goestenkors. The drive and passion for winning that she has instilled in her Blue Devil teams has always been with Goestenkors, dating back to her days as a player. As an undergraduate at Saginaw Valley State, Goestenkors played for former Purdue head coach Reall. In her four years at Saginaw, Goestenkors earned NAIA All-America honors and was named conference MVP, as well as being selected to the Academic All-Conference Team. After earning a physical education degree from Saginaw Valley State in 1985, Goestenkors served as a graduate assistant for Iowa State during the season. From there, Goestenkors moved to Purdue, where she would spend the next six years as an assistant coach. With such an energetic, positive approach to the game, Goestenkors will continue to lead Duke as it takes its place among the nation s giants in women s college basketball. 18 Game 1-- Penn State 67 #1 Duke 93 Four Blue Devils scored in double figures and all 11 that played scored as the No. 1 Duke women s basketball team (1-0) opened the season with a road victory defeating Penn State (0-1) Friday night here at the Bryce Jordan Center. The two teams played back and fourth the first 10 minutes of the game as Duke held a lead before going on an 11-0 run to push the lead to with 6:19 left in the first half. Jessica Foley scored five points in that run and Alison Bales four. The Nittany Lions then went on a 10-4 spurt of their own to cut the lead to and the two teams played evenly for the rest of the first half as before Duke pushed its lead to at the break. Lindsey Harding hit a lay-up and Abby Waner a three-pointer to open the second half and the Blue Devils never looked back, opening up a 21 point lead on another Waner triple less than three minutes into the second half. Duke s biggest lead was 31 points after a Monique Currie layup with 7:04 left in the game and Penn State would never cut the lead to less than 20 as Duke finished with a 26 point victory. Waner, who became the eighth player under coach Gail Goestenkors to start her first game as a Blue Devil, and Bales scored 15 points apiece while Currie added 12 and Harding 10 for the Blue Devils. Wanisha Smith and Mistie Williams each scored nine points and Chante Black scored eight. Williams added nine rebounds while Waner also recorded six assists and six steals in the contest. Karmela Gissendanner led the way for the Nittany Lions with 19 points Duke Women s Basketball Box Scores Game 2-- Old Dominion 56 #1 Duke 93 Six players scored during a first-half 21-0 run as the No. 1 Duke women s basketball team (2-0) handed Old Dominion (0-1) its worst ever here at the Ted Constant Convocation Center Sunday afternoon in a victory. Duke scored the games first five points and the Lady Monarchs closed the gap to 5-4 before the 21-0 spurt gave Duke a 26-4 led half way through the first stanza. Duke held a 20 point lead for the remainder of the first half as they went into the break with a lead. Old Dominion cut the lead to under 20 briefly to open the second half before a 16-2 run gave Duke a advantage. Freshman Abby Waner scored eight points in that run en route to a team-high 17 in the contest. A Laura Kurz three-pointer with 5:44 left gave Duke an lead, the biggest in the game for Duke until Waner scored five points in the last 42 seconds to give Duke a victory, the program s 550 th all-time. Waner hit 7-of-9 shots from the floor and 2-of-4 from three-point range in just 19 minutes of action. No Blue Devil played more than 25 minutes and all 11 active players saw at least 13 minutes of action. Waner was joined in double-figures by Lindsey Harding with 16, Kurz with 11 and senior Monique Currie just missed a double-double with 15 points and nine rebounds. Wanisha Smith dished out 11 assists for Duke, the fourth-highest total in school history, as the Blue Devils finished the game with 28 and all 11 players that saw time not only scored and had an assist. Defensively, the Blue Devils had 12 steals and 10 blocks as Smith led the way with three steals and Chante Black had four blocks and Alison Bales three. Game 3-- * AP Ranking Fairfield 44 #1 Duke 110 In what is becoming a season of big runs, No. 1 Duke (3-0) used a first half 32-0 run to pull away from Fairfield (0-2) and a 17-0 second-half run to finish the game as Duke won Tuesday. Senior Monique Currie led the way for Duke with 21 points and 12 rebounds while freshman Abby Waner scored 16 points, had six assists and five rebounds. In all, six Blue Devils scored in double figures as Mistie Williams and Carrem Gay scored 14 apiece, Alison Bales added 13 and Chante Black 12. Duke assisted 31 times on its 44 field goals as Wanisha Smith led the way with eight and Lindsey Harding added seven. Duke again had a stellar defensive performance as the Blue Devils recorded 17 steals and 11 blocks in the game. Black and Bales combined for seven blocks while Harding, Smith and Waner each had three steals to lead Duke. 19 Game 4-- Arkansas State 56 #1 Duke 110 All 11 Blue Devils scored while Laura Kurz and Lindsey Harding each had a game-high 19 points as the No. 1 Duke defeated Arkansas State (2-1) Monique Currie had five points in the first four minutes as Duke opened up an early 14-4 lead by the first media timeout. Arkansas State s Rudy Sims hit a three-pointer before Duke would go on a 12-0 run to make the score 26-7 with 11:30 left in the first half. Carrem Gay scored six straight points in the run. Kurz would hit a three-pointer to give Duke its first 20 point lead at and a late first-half 15-0 run would give Duke a lead as Duke held a lead at the break. Harding scored nine points in the run for Duke. Arkansas State held the Duke lead near 30 for the first part of the second half but after two layups from Gay and a pair of free throws from Kurz, Duke pushed the lead to 38 at at the 12:00 mark of the second half. It paid off as Lindsey Harding hit a 35-foot shot as time ran out in the otherwise dismal first half and the Blue Devils would go on outscore the TCU Horned Frogs (2-5) by 31 in the second half for a victory. Up just one point at 28-27, sophomore Laura Kurz hit a three-pointer with less than a minute remaining in the first half and then got a steal and lay-up just 20 seconds later before Harding s buzzer-beater gave Duke an 8-0 run to end the first stanza up Nine Blue Devils scored at least eight points as Kurz led the way with 15 points, including a 3-of-6 performance from behind the arc. Alison Bales and Monique Currie scored 11 apiece for Duke while Chante Black, Carrem Gay and Wanisha Smith each had nine and Jessica Foley, TCU led the game for the first 11 minutes of the game before Kurz nailed a three-pointer to put Duke up 10-9 eight minutes into the first half. The 86 point victory is the largest in Duke history. Senior Monique Currie scored nine points in the run to open the game en route to a game-high 18 to go along with seven rebounds and six assists. Junior Alison Bales played a perfect game, shooting 5-of-5 from the field and 8-of-8 from the line for 18 points and she also grabbed 12 rebounds and had seven blocks. 22 Game 13-- Florida State 68 #2 Duke 87 Monique Currie recorded the school s second triple-double with 21 points, 12 rebounds and 11 assists as the No. 2 Duke Blue Devils defeated Florida State Thursday night at Cameron Indoor Stadium. The game marked Currie s third 20-point performance of the season while her rebound and assist marks were season highs. The only other triple-double in school history came nearly 20 years ago as Katie Meier had 16 points, 11 rebounds and 10 assists against Manhattan on March 3, Alison Bales just missed a double-double with 14 points and nine rebounds while Mistie Williams scored 16 points and grabbed six rebounds of her own with an impressive 7-of-9 performance from the field. Lindsey Harding score 12 points for the Blue Devils while Abby Waner had seven points and five rebounds to round out the starting line-up. Wanisha Smith led the way off the bench for Duke with eight points and three assists. Currie scored the game s first eight points in the first two minutes of action. After Duke held a 14-2 lead after four minutes of action, the rest of the game was relatively close.
