EKU leads the series, 72-61; however, the Tigers have won three straight over the Colonels, including a victory in Richmond in January Freshman Asante Gist poured in a career-high 28 points at Belmont on Thursday night. Gist has now scored 20 points or more in four of EKU s last five games, and he leads all freshmen in the OVC in scoring (15.9 ppg) and assists (3.8 apg). Sophomore Nick Mayo posted 25 points, eight rebounds and three assists at Belmont. Mayo has now scored in double figures in 31 straight games dating back to last season, and he ranks fifth in the OVC in scoring (17.8 ppg). He also ranks in the top-15 in the league in rebounding, blocks, FG percentage and FT percentage. Mayo is now only 52 points shy of 1,000 for his career with at least three games remaining in his sophomore season. He will need to average 17.3 ppg over the final three games of the regular season to reach the century mark at the midway point of his career. Junior Zach Charles pulled down a team-best 10 rebounds at Belmont. He has a team-high five double- -digit rebounding games this season. That is the most since the Colonels also hit 15 at Western Kentucky on Dec. 1, AVARE EXPLODES FOR CAREER-HIGH Junior Dillon Avare came off the bench to pour in a career-high 21 points at UT Martin on Feb. 4. His seven three-pointers in the game were the most by a Colonel in a single game this season and the most by any Colonel since Glenn Cosey hit eight triples at Austin Peay on Feb. 22, MAYO S DOUBLE FIGURES STREAK Sophomore Nick Mayo finished with 19 points, eight rebounds and a career-high seven assists vs. Austin Peay on Feb. 1. MAYO NAMED MADNESS OVC POW Sophomore Nick Mayo was named the College Sports Madness OVC Player of the Week on Jan. 30. Mayo averaged 20.0 points, 7.0 rebounds, 5.0 blocks and 3.5 assists-per-game in EKU s two road wins over Jacksonville State and Tennessee Tech. PROTECTING THE RIM As of Jan. 30, sophomore Nick Mayo (1.4 bpg) and junior Zach Charles (1.2 bpg) rank fourth and fifth, respectively, in the OVC in blocks. As a team, EKU ranks third in the conference in blocked shots (3.8 bpg). AVARE BREAKS OUT OF SHOOTING SLUMP Junior Dillon Avare came off the bench to knock down four crucial three-pointers in the second half at Tennessee Tech on Jan. 28. He had been 8-of-49 (16%) from deep in conference play before that outburst. #ZEECHUCK GOES FOR CAREER-HIGH Junior Zach Charles scored a career-high 19 points at Tennessee Tech on Jan. 28. He also pulled down nine boards and blocked a career-high four shots. COMEBACK IN COOKEVILLE! EKU erased a 17-point first-half deficit and stormed back to beat Tennessee Tech, 77-69, on the road on Jan. 28. It was the Colonels second straight road win, and first win in Cookeville since EKU GETS 500TH OVC WIN EKU s win over Jacksonville State on Jan. 26 gave the Colonels their 500th OVC regular season win. Murray State is the only other league team to reach that mileston. COLONELS HOLD A BLOCK PARTY... And all Gamecocks were invited. EKU s 13 blocks vs. Jacksonville State on Jan. 26 were the most by a Colonel team in a single game in over 14 years. Sophomore Nick Mayo s career-high seven blocks were the most by a Colonel since Eric Stutz had seven vs. Southeast Missouri in February of BIG ROAD WIN AT JSU EKU snapped a five-game losing streak by beating Jacksonville State, 57-52, on the road on Jan. 26. It was the Colonels first win under second-year head coach Dan McHale in which they scored less than 60 points. Sophomore Nick Mayo had 19 points, eight rebounds, three assists and a career-high seven blocks in the victory. GIST CONTINUES TO RACK UP HONORS Asante Gist was voted OVC Co-Freshman of the Week on Jan. 23. It is the fifth time this season he has earned OVC Freshman of the Week honors. 5 CHARLES GETS A DOUBLE-DOUBLE AT MURRAY STATE Junior Zach Charles recorded his second double-double of the year at Murray State, scoring 12 points and grabbing 12 boards. He leads EKU and ranks 13th in the OVC in rebounding (6.5 rpg). GIST COMES OFF BENCH FOR CAREER HIGH Freshman Asante Gist came off the bench to score a career-high 26 points on Jan. 19 at Murray State. He also dished out a team-best five assists. It is the first time the Colonels have shot above 90% from the stripe since Feb. 18, 2016, when they shot 91.7% (22-of- 24)... also against Belmont. BIG MAN CAN PASS As of Jan. 17, Nick Mayo - standing has led EKU in assists three times in the last six games. His seven assists vs. Belmont on Jan. 12 are the second-most by a Colonel in any game this season (Isaac McGlone had nine vs. Ball State). ALL-AROUND GAME Nick Mayo turned in one of his best allaround games as a Colonel on Jan. 14 vs. Belmont. The sophomore scored 17 points, grabbed five boards, dished out a career-high seven assists, matched a careerhigh with three steals and matched a season-high with three blocks. ISAAC WITH THE RARE DNP Injured senior Isaac McGlone missed only the fourth game of his career vs. TSU on Jan. 12. McGlone ranks 19th all-time in games played at EKU (113). CHARLES PULLS DOWN 11 BOARDS Junior Zach Charles pulled down a team-best 11 rebounds vs. TSU on Jan. 12. It was his team-leading third double-digit rebounds game of the season. ASANTE LEADS WAY VS. TSU Freshman Asante Gist scored a game-high 17 points in EKU s loss to Tennessee State on Jan. 12. Gist ranks in the top-10 in the OVC in scoring (9th / 14.9 ppg) and assists (eighth / 3.9 apg). He leads all freshmen in the league in both categories. OVC FRESHMAN OF THE WEEK... FOR 4TH TIME Asante Gist was voted OVC Freshman of the Week for the fourth time on Monday. The point guard from East Orange, N.J. averaged 22.4 points-per-game and 4.5 assists-per-game last week. DISHMAN NOTCHES CAREER-BEST REBOUNDS Freshman DeAndre Dishman recorded career-highs in rebounds (nine) and steals (two) versus Eastern Illinois on Jan. 7. GIST BOUNCES BACK VS. SIUE After a tough OVC opener, freshman Asante Gist bounced back with a career-high 25 points and a career-high six assists in the win over SIUE on Jan. 5. He shot 13-of-14 from the free throw line. Gist leads all OVC freshmen in scoring (14.5 ppg), assists (4.1 apg) and minutes played (30.4 mpg). CONTROLLING THE PAINT In the win over SIUE on Jan. 5, EKU out-rebounded the Cougars, 42-33, and outscored them in the paint, CHITTY CRASHES THE BOARDS Freshman guard Parker Chitty led EKU with a career-high eight rebounds in the win over SIUE on Jan. 5. AVARE THE FACILITATOR Junior Dillon Avare did not score in the win over SIUE on Jan. 5; however, he did dish out a careerhigh four assists. THREE POINTS, THE OLD-FASHIONED WAY EKU did not hit a three-pointer against SIUE on Jan. 5 (0-of-15); however, the Colonels did convert four three-point plays in the game. EXCELLENT DEFENSE EKU had its best defensive game of the year in the win over SIUE on Jan. 5. TRIPLE THREAT As of Jan. 3, sophomore Nick Mayo is the only player in the OVC ranked in the top-15 in all three shooting percentage categories: field goal percentage (14th / 48.7%), three-point field goal percentage (8th / 41.5%) and free throw percentage (8th / 78.9%). TAKING CARE OF THE BALL EKU commited a season-low eight turnovers in its win over UVa-Wise on Dec. 28. DISHMAN SHINES IN FIRST START Freshman DeAndre Dishman made his first career start in EKU s win over UVa-Wise on Dec. 28. He responded with a career-high 15 points and seven boards. MAYO S DOUBLE FIGURES STREAK Sophomore Nick Mayo finished with 19 points, eight rebounds and a career-high seven assists vs. Austin Peay on Feb. 1. Mayo has now scored in double figures in 28 consecutive games dating back to last season. He leads EKU and ranks fifth in the OVC in scoring at 17.6 ppg. MAYO NAMED MADNESS OVC POW Sophomore Nick Mayo was named the College Sports Madness OVC Player of the Week on Jan. 30. Mayo averaged 20.0 points, 7.0 rebounds, 5.0 blocks and 3.5 assists-per-game in EKU s two road wins over Jacksonville State and Tennessee Tech. PROTECTING THE RIM As of Jan. 30, sophomore Nick Mayo (1.4 bpg) and junior Zach Charles (1.2 bpg) rank fourth and fifth, respectively, in the OVC in blocks. EKU s 13 blocks vs. Jacksonville State on Jan. 26 were the most by a Colonel team in a single game in over 14 years. Sophomore Nick Mayo s career-high seven blocks were the most by a Colonel since Eric Stutz had seven vs. Southeast Missouri in February of BIG MAN CAN PASS As of Jan. 17, Nick Mayo - standing has led EKU in assists three times in the last six games. His seven assists vs. Belmont on Jan. 12 are the second-most by a Colonel in any game this season (Isaac McGlone had nine vs. Ball State). ALL-AROUND GAME Nick Mayo turned in one of his best all-around games as a Colonel on Jan. 14 vs. Belmont. The sophomore scored 17 points, grabbed five boards, dished out a career-high seven assists, matched a career-high with three steals and matched a season-high with three blocks. TRIPLE THREAT As of Jan. 3, sophomore Nick Mayo is the only player in the OVC ranked in the top- 15 in all three shooting percentage categories: field goal percentage (14th / 48.7%), three-point field goal percentage (8th / 41.5%) and free throw percentage (8th / 78.9%). MAYO JUST MISSES DOUBLE-DOUBLE Sophomore Nick Mayo just missed his third double-double of the year at Manhattan on Dec. 22, scoring 14 points and grabbing nine boards. Mayo has scored 13 or more points in every game this season, and he ranks fourth in the OVC in scoring at 18.1 ppg. Only 45 games into his collegiate career, Mayo is already seventh on the OVC s active career scoring list (704 points). Dan brings years of experience at some top-flight programs to EKU, along with ties to Kentucky and this region. He came to us with the highest recommendations from some of America s best coaches and we have every confidence he will take our basketball program to the next level. Before being chosen as Eastern Kentucky s 20th head men s basketball coach, McHale completed his second season as an assistant coach at the University of Minnesota where he worked under head coach Richard Pitino. McHale got his coaching start under Hall of Fame coach Rick Pitino as a staff assistant at Louisville from 2001 to I m extremely excited to be working at Eastern Kentucky University, McHale said. I want to thank President Benson and Steve Lochmueller for this opportunity. With the leadership of these two, it s an honor to be a part of these exciting times at EKU. We are going to bring excitement to McBrayer Arena with a fast paced style of play. It s going to be fun for our players and our fans. In his first season at Minnesota, McHale helped the Gophers to a NIT Championship and a record that included wins over No. 9 Wisconsin and No. 11 Ohio State. The 25 victories are the second-most in program history. The squad won 18 games, including a victory at Michigan State, a team that would reach the Final Four. I am extremely excited and proud of Dan McHale, Richard Pitino said. Eastern Kentucky is getting a tremendous coach and recruiter, but more importantly a great person. He will represent the Eastern Kentucky program in a first-class manner. There is no doubt in my mind that he will do great things there. McHale served as a student manager for four seasons ( ) at Kentucky. He was part of one national championship team, four NCAA Tournament teams and three Southeastern Conference championships while working with Tubby Smith s Wildcats. The Cardinals went 25-7, won the 2003 Conference USA Tournament title and reached the NCAA Tournament in McHale s second season as a staff assistant at Louisville. During his first stint he assisted with opponent scouting, game preparation and on-campus recruiting. After one year as the director of operations at Manhattan College, McHale returned to UofL for two seasons as the director of video operations, overseeing advance scouting video and evaluation video of Cardinal players. In his second two-year stint at Louisville, the Cardinals won 45 games and played in two NCAA Tournaments. Dan is one of the hardest working coaches in our profession, Rick Pitino said. I have great admiration for his dedication to our game. He is a great addition to our state. In 2007, McHale joined Kevin Willard s first staff at Iona College. As an assistant, McHale helped lead the Gaels from two wins the season before the duo arrived to 12 wins their first season and 21 wins in year three at Iona. He recruited NBA draft pick and 2012 MAAC Player of the Year Scott Machado to Iona. McHale followed Willard to Seton Hall when he was named head coach in In their second season, the Pirates won 20 games. While at Seton Hall, McHale was responsible for the Pirates defensive game planning and spearheaded opponent scouting and game preparation. Eastern Kentucky has hit a home run with the hiring of Dan McHale, who is a rising star within the coaching ranks, Willard said. He is not only a terrific recruiter and mentor of student-athletes, but he also has a great mind for the game of basketball. Dan has earned the opportunity to lead a basketball program, and with his outstanding knowledge, personality and work ethic, he will make a positive impact at Eastern Kentucky. McHale will look to add to the success of the Rick Pitino coaching tree that includes Billy Donovan (Florida), Tubby Smith (Texas Tech), Mick Cronin (Cincinnati), Richard Pitino (Minnesota) and former EKU head coach Travis Ford (Oklahoma State). McHale has caught the eye of one of America s top young college basketball coaches Memphis head coach Josh Pastner. Dan is going to do an outstanding job at Eastern Kentucky University, said Pastner. He is a tireless worker and will do the job with great principle and great work ethic. Eastern Kentucky got a winner in Dan McHale.
