Jets have big task ahead in trying to stop Dolphins' Suh (Dennis Waszak) Associated Press FLORHAM PARK, N.J. (AP) Todd Bowles has figured out the key to slowing Ndamukong Suh, the disruptive and playmaking defensive tackle of the Miami Dolphins. "Yeah," the New York Jets coach said with a smile, "him not playing." Good try, coach. But Suh will be out there Sunday lined up across from the Jets when the teams square off in London. And it'll be up to New York's offensive line to come up with a solution to keep Suh from getting too close to quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick. "Oh, man," right tackle Breno Giacomini said. "Everybody's really good in this league. He's really good." Suh signed a six-year contract with the Dolphins in the offseason, a deal that's worth $114 million, with about $60 million fully guaranteed, making him the highest-paid defensive player in league history. In five years with Detroit, Suh was a force as he routinely overpowered offensive linemen and terrorized quarterbacks. Through three games, Suh has seven total tackles and no sacks a bit of a slow start for him. The Dolphins' defense, which includes linemen Cameron Wake, Earl Mitchell and Olivier Vernon, has taken down the quarterback just once while not yet living up to some high expectations. "I've gone through this before," Suh said. "Teams don't want us to get sacks and I commend them for that. At the end of the day, we have to go out there and will ourselves to sacks. Nobody is going to give them to us." The Jets are well aware of what Suh and the rest of the Dolphins are capable of. "They've got a lot of guys down there," Bowles said of the Dolphins' defensive line. "We've got our work cut out for us." Fitzpatrick has been sacked just once in two games, and he knows that number could rise in a hurry. "They create some matchup problems for you," Fitzpatrick said. "I'm not sitting here looking at that saying, 'Boy, I'm going to be able to sit back there all day and throw.' They've got a lot of talented guys up front that can rush the passer." And, talk about timing. Brian Winters is set to make his first start since early last season as he fills in for the injured Willie Colon at right guard. Winters, who started six games at left guard last year before going down with a knee injury, and Giacomini will likely see plenty of Suh on Sunday. "He's a good player," Winters said. "I'm just going to take it like any other game." Suh isn't quite like just any other player. The four-time Pro Bowl selection has 36 career sacks and is routinely recognized as the best defensive tackle in the NFL. "He looks so big and powerful, but he's got some speed," Giacomini said of the 6-foot-4, 320-pound Suh. "He knows how to use his technique.... His toolbox of defensive moves or techniques that he uses is pretty full. He can change it up at any time." Because of all that, Bowles had some sage advice for Winters when it comes to blocking Suh. 2 P a g e

"Just eat your Wheaties," Bowles joked. "He's going to be there. Brian's a tough guy. He'll fight." That's something else Suh isn't particularly opposed to. The defensive tackle has been fined more than $250,000 during his career for his aggressive style of play. In Week 1, he was accused of kicking off Washington running back Alfred Morris' helmet an infraction the NFL deemed was not on purpose and did not fine him. Giacomini also has a reputation for being ready to rumble, frequently getting into it with opponents while sticking up for teammates. So that could make for a potentially explosive showdown. "Obviously, you don't want to get any flags or anything to put us in situations that make it tougher to score," Giacomini said. "It's noted that he's a physical player and plays to the whistle and all that. But we've got to play smart." Giacomini added that facing both Suh and Wake will be a "good challenge" for the right side of the Jets' offensive line. During the offseason and the beginning of training camp when Colon was out while getting his knee healthy, Giacomini and Winters constantly worked together. So, communication on the line isn't expected to be an issue for the two linemen. "We're comfortable with each other," Giacomini said. "I think he's getting more comfortable on the right side. Winters is a good player and we're just going to have to go out there and do what we do, man." No practice for Jets' Decker; Revis, Ivory limited (Dennis Waszak) Associated Press FLORHAM PARK, N.J. (AP) The New York Jets might be without wide receiver Eric Decker for a second straight game. Decker remained sidelined Wednesday by a sprained left knee that has kept him out since he was injured in Week 2 against Indianapolis. He did not play against Philadelphia on Sunday, and it appears he could be out again when the Jets travel to London to play AFC East rival Miami on Sunday. Cornerback Darrelle Revis and running back Chris Ivory were limited Wednesday. Revis has a hamstring issue, but said he should be fine. Ivory is dealing with a strained quadriceps that kept him out against the Eagles although he was active. Right guard Willie Colon (sprained MCL) and wide receiver Chris Owusu (knee) are already out, and tight end Jeff Cumberland (concussion) and linebacker Trevor Reilly (finger infection) are unlikely to play. Coach Todd Bowles said the early decision on Cumberland, who was hurt against the Eagles, was based on the fact the Jets are leaving Thursday night for a long flight to London so it wouldn't make sense to have him travel while recovering from the concussion. That leaves Kellen Davis as the team's only healthy tight end, although wide receiver Quincy Enunwa is also playing a tight end-like role in coordinator Chan Gailey's offense. Bowles said the Jets could look to sign another tight end or promote Wes Saxton from the practice squad. Safety Jaiquawn Jarrett (knee) and cornerback Darrin Walls (hamstring) also didn't practice. Cornerback Antonio Cromartie (hip) and linebacker Quinton Coples (sprained elbow) were limited. 3 P a g e

NEWSDAY Jets getting schooled on how to avoid jet lag for trip to London (Greg Logan) Newsday FLORHAM PARK, N.J. -- As part of their preparation for handling the five-hour time difference in London, where they will face the Dolphins on Sunday, the Jets put together a class for players with tips on how to avoid jet lag. Rookie defensive lineman Leonard Williams admitted he got a head start in getting extra sleep before traveling. "I was kind of nodding off in that meeting to be honest," Williams said with a smile. "The guy was telling us it's hard to go to sleep. He shouldn't have said that. He turned off the lights. I mean, I was trying to pay attention. "The main thing I got out of it was that he said we should try to go to sleep a little earlier than we have been and wake up a little earlier than we have been because it's going to be a big-time difference and we're going to be a little jet-lagged." D'Brickashaw Ferguson was sporting an orange-tinted pair of sunglasses called "blue-blockers" at his locker. They are supposed to help people sleep better. "If they can get me more prepared for the game, why not take advantage of them?" Ferguson said. "They're just supposed to block out the blue light. A lot of our ipads, iphones, Androids emit a certain light that messes you up when you're trying to get rest. But it's not just the light. Alcohol at night can cause problems, caffeine after 2 p.m. Those are some of the things they try to discourage as you prepare for this flight." Revis limited Darrelle Revis (hamstring) practiced on a limited basis. "I'm feeling fine," Revis said. "I practiced today a little bit and moved around. I just have to keep progressing during the week." Ryan Fitzpatrick respects Dolphins' Ndamukong Suh (Greg Logan) Newsday FLORHAM PARK, N.J. -- The logistics involved in playing an NFL game at London's Wembley Stadium have occupied much of the Jets' attention this week. On Sunday, their major concern will be how to control a Dolphins defensive line led by Ndamukong Suh, who basically received quarterback money when he signed a six-year deal worth $114 million to take his talents to South Beach. Amazingly, the Dolphins have only one sack through three games, and they rank 31st in rushing defense since Suh joined a line that already had standout ends Cameron Wake and Olivier Vernon. But as Jets coach Todd Bowles said Wednesday, "These guys can hit the quarterback, and the sacks will come and they come in bunches. I just hope it's not this week.'' 4 P a g e

The Jets' Ryan Fitzpatrick doesn't need his Harvard education to know he's in trouble if he has to drop back to pass 58 times as he did in a loss to Philadelphia last week. "Suh's a great player,'' Fitzpatrick said. "They signed him for all that money for a reason. He's supremely talented. They've got a few of them on that defense. You've got to know where they are on every play and pay a lot of attention to it.'' Fitzpatrick has been sacked only twice in 118 pass plays, but the Jets' offensive line will be without starting right guard Willie Colon (knee). He has been replaced by Brian Winters, who was roughed up by Suh last year when he was with a Detroit team that beat the Jets. Suh had only one tackle in that game, but still made his presence felt. Part of the challenge of lining up across from Suh comes with the understanding he won't necessarily stop the rough stuff when the whistle blows. In his first game for Miami, Suh was caught "inadvertently'' banging the head of a downed Washington runner with his leg and stepping on another opponent's leg. "I'm more concerned about locking him up, so all the other stuff doesn't concern me much,'' Jets center Nick Mangold said of Suh's cheap-shot reputation. "I'll cross that bridge when we get there.'' Jets tackle Breno Giacomini added, "It doesn't matter who you play. It's about us. But it is noted that Wake and Suh are on the same side [of the Dolphins' four-man front]... I think [Suh] is a great player. He plays tough; he plays strong; he plays through the whistle. I've been known to do that, too, so I appreciate that.'' Asked how Suh adjusted at the end of last year's Detroit game, Giacomini said, "We were doing some good things early, and he figured it out a little bit and got a little bit skinnier. That was a good tape to reference. It's good to look at it, but everybody zones in on one player. It's a great defense overall, not just one player.'' The Jets' offense was sluggish against the Eagles when running back Chris Ivory and wide receiver Eric Decker were sidelined by injuries. Decker (knee) did not practice Wednesday, but Ivory (quadriceps) practiced on a limited basis. The best way to slow the Dolphins' pass rush would be forcing them to contend with Ivory's running. "He's a huge part of what we do,'' Giacomini said. "Chris runs downhill and is physical. He's what we want back there as far as the running style. It would feel good to see him out there again.'' THE RECORD Adjusting sleep for London trip (J.P. Pelzman) The Record October 1, FLORHAM PARK Say this much about Leonard Williams he knows how to follow a game plan. The rookie defensive end attended a team meeting Monday in which Jets players received tips from a sleep specialist on how to prepare for their impending trip to London to play the Dolphins on Sunday. Williams then went to sleep during the presentation, but only briefly, he said Wednesday. "I was kind of nodding off in that meeting, to be honest," Williams said smiling. "The guy was telling us it s all right to go to sleep. And he shouldn t have said that. And then he turned off the lights. But I was trying to pay attention. 5 P a g e

"The main thing I got out of it," the first-round pick added, "was that he said we should try to go to sleep a little earlier than we have been and wake up a little earlier than we have been. Because it s going to be a big time difference and we re going to be kind of jet-lagged." Williams made it clear he didn t fall asleep in any other meetings this week. "It was just a little bit of nodding off" in that one meeting, Williams said. But he also indicated he isn t sleeping on Miami, even though the reeling Dolphins come in off a 27-point loss to Buffalo. "I think the biggest challenge," Williams said, "is keeping people s attention on the main reason why we re going there, and that s to play a game, a division game. We re not going there for fun. "It s huge," he added. "It s our first division game and we re coming off a loss, so we have to bounce back." Miami routed Oakland last season at London s Wembley Stadium, the site of Sunday s game. The Jets will be playing their first regular-season game overseas. "It s going to be tough," cornerback Darrelle Revis said of the trip. "We re trying to treat this like we re going to a West Coast game, but we re actually going the opposite way." Revis managed to stay awake during the sleep presentation, and he credited head trainer John Mellody for bringing in the specialist. "I think it was beneficial for everybody," Revis said. "I think a lot of guys learned a lot of stuff about themselves [in terms of] sleeping, and he gave us a bunch of tips. I m going to try to follow all the steps I can." The Jets have advised their players to try to get to sleep 30 minutes earlier this week, and wake up 30 minutes earlier, in an attempt to begin the adjustment to the five-hour time difference in England. But coach Todd Bowles said it s easier said than done. "You hope you get to bed a little bit earlier," he said. "To say you re going to go to bed 30 minutes earlier, I know I m guilty of [not doing] it. You try to do as best you can and treat it like a West Coast trip, and then you adjust when you get there." The Jets plan to practice here today, then fly to London this afternoon. They will have a Friday practice in England. Such trips are "part of the NFL," said center Nick Mangold, who will be making his fourth journey to England. He also went there as a child, was at the Summer Olympics in 2012 to root for his sister Holley, a weightlifter, and was there in July for an NFL promotional visit. The Dolphins "have got to deal with it, too," Mangold said. "It s something that we re all going to fight through, and it s going to make us focus that much more." As long as they make sure to be wide awake on game day. Decker doesn't practice (J.P. Pelzman) The Record October 1, Decker doesn t practice 6 P a g e

The Jets passing offense struggled without injured wide receiver Eric Decker in a loss to Philadelphia, and he again could be out when the Jets play Miami in London on Sunday. Decker didn t practice Wednesday because of a sprained left knee suffered in a win at Indianapolis on Sept. 21. Coach Todd Bowles said he is "not sure" if Decker will be healthy enough to play against the Dolphins. Star cornerback Darrelle Revis, who left in the fourth quarter of the Philadelphia game because of a hamstring injury, practiced on a limited basis and said he felt fine. Bowles said he is hopeful that Revis and running back Chris Ivory (quadriceps) will be able to play Sunday. Ivory also was limited in practice. Bowles also said he doesn t expect tight end Jeff Cumberland to play. Cumberland suffered a concussion against the Eagles, and still is in the NFL s concussion protocol. The Jets would rather not have him on a seven-hour flight in that condition. Without Cumberland, the Jets would have only one tight end, blocking specialist Kellen Davis, available for the game. Bowles acknowledged it s possible the Jets could promote undrafted free agent tight end Wes Saxton from the practice squad. There is a spot available on the 53-man roster because the Jets waived nose tackle Deon Simon, a seventh-round pick. Briefs Bowles was asked about safety Dion Bailey, whom the Jets claimed off waivers from Seattle. He started the first two games for the Seahawks but was cut after Kam Chancellor ended his holdout. "Dion is a good football player," Bowles said. "He did some things that we liked. He was a guy for future reference that we wanted to get our hands on." Miami LT BrandenAlbert (hamstring) returned to practice on a limited basis. He sat out the blowout loss to Buffalo. ESPN NEW YORK Buster Skrine holds key to Jets' pass defense against Dolphins (Rich Cimini) ESPN New York October 1, FLORHAM PARK, N.J. -- Highlighting two players who figure to have integral roles this week for the New York Jets in their game against the Miami Dolphins: Buster Skrine, slot corner: If the Jets want to mess with Ryan Tannehill's head, they should take away his security blanket -- Jarvis Landry, who lines up almost exclusively in the slot. Landry has been targeted a team-high 34 times, with 23 of those coming out of the slot. That domain belongs to Skrine, who has played well in his first three games with the Jets. He doesn't have to worry about Landry's deep speed -- he's averaging only 9.6 yards per catch -- but he has to pay attention to Landry's route-running. He's a crafty receiver and Tannehill looks to him a lot, especially on early downs. If Skrine can neutralize Landry, it would force Tannehill to work the outside, but that would play to the Jets' strength -- meaning Darrelle Revis and Antonio Cromartie. 7 P a g e

Brian Winters, right guard: Starting for the first time in a year, Winters draws one of the toughest assignments in the NFL -- Ndamukong Suh. The $114 million defensive tackle is off to a slow start -- six solo tackles, no sacks and no impact on the run defense, which ranks 31st. But the Jets are treating Suh like a sleeping grizzly, capable of wreaking havoc at any time. In three games, he has lined up at left defensive tackle (over the right guard) on 119 of 145 snaps, according to ESPN Stats & Information. Winters, who starts for the injured Willie Colon, has nowhere to hide. Naturally, he will get help from center Nick Mangold and right tackle Breno Giacomini. It has to be a team effort because there's no way Winters, who tends to lean in his pass-protection sets, can handle Suh one-on-one. Jets' game plan on how to block Ndamukong Suh: Eat Wheaties (Rich Cimini) ESPN New York October 1, FLORHAM PARK, N.J. -- For the first time since 2004, someone other than Willie Colon or Brandon Moore is starting at right guard for the New York Jets. You're up, Brian Winters. Your first assignment: Ndamukong Suh. Any advice, coach? "Just eat your Wheaties," Todd Bowles said on Wednesday. The Jets just hope Suh doesn't eat Winters. "Brian is a tough guy," Bowles said. "He'll fight." Suh, who left the Detroit Lions to sign a six-year, $114 million contract with the Miami Dolphins, is taking some heat because he's off to a sluggish start -- only six solo tackles (including for loss), no sacks and no quarterback hits. For $26.5 million, his total compensation for this season, he's not delivering much bang for the buck. But it's still early, and he could be adjusting to the Dolphins' scheme. There's no doubt about Suh's ability. "He's still the same dominant guy he was in Detroit," Bowles said. "He can be very disruptive." The key to slowing him down? "Him not playing," Bowles cracked. The Jets faced Suh last season and they must have binged on Wheaties because they did a terrific job of neutralizing him. He was held to one solo tackle in the Lions' win over the Jets, who ran for 135 yards and averaged 4.9 yards per carry with The Great Suh in the middle of the defense. Winters started that game, but he played left guard and saw very little of Suh, who was pitted against Colon for much of the game. Colon is a Bronx tough guy, not intimated by anyone, and he gave Suh a full day of the Bronx. Unfortunately for the Jets, Colon is nursing a sprained knee and won't play. Winters doesn't have much experience at right guard -- a grand total of 47 snaps, all in the second half of last week's loss to the Philadelphia Eagles. The Jets have allowed only two sacks, but they're not taking Suh & Co. lightly even though the Dolphins' once-vaunted pass rush has disappeared. As a team, they have only one sack. 8 P a g e

"That's a little misleading," quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick said. "I'm not sitting here, looking at that and saying, 'Boy, I'll be able to sit back there all day and throw.' They've got a lot of talented guys up front that can rush the passer." Leonard Williams dozes off while taking sleep therapist's advice (Ohm Youngmisuk) ESPN New York FLORHAM PARK, N.J. -- The New York Jets met with a sleep therapist to find ways to adjust to the fivehour London time change. One rookie took the expert's advice to heart immediately. First-round pick Leonard Williams admitted to dozing off in the Monday meeting not long after the therapist turned off the lights in the meeting room. Although he says the therapist said sleeping was allowed. "I was kind of nodding off," Williams admitted with a laugh. "The guy was telling us it is alright to go to sleep. He shouldn't have said that. He turned off the lights. I was trying to pay attention." Head coach Todd Bowles probably didn't mind since it wasn't in a positional or football team meeting and because he wants his players as fresh and rested as possible for Sunday's international divisional showdown with Miami. In fact, Bowles is leaving nothing to risk when it comes to his team adapting to this challenging road trip. In each player's locker stall was a new addition this week -- a set of orange eyeglasses. The glasses -- which look similar to safety glasses people sometimes wear at a gun range -- are "light-blocking" glasses designed to help players for late-night studying on tablets, laptops and phones. So before they play the Dolphins, several Jets players could already be seeing a lot of orange each night before sleeping. "It is supposed to block out the blue light which causes you to stay awake a lot at night," offensive lineman D'Brickashaw Ferguson explained. "A lot of our ipads, iphones, Androids, I guess it emits a certain light. It messes you up when you are trying to go get rest (after). It is not just the light." There are plenty of things that can unintentionally keep players from getting the necessary rest needed on this trip. Caffeine after a certain hour during the day and large meals less than three hours before bedtime will be discouraged. The players also have been equipped with a "Litebook" which provides bright light to give players enough light for at least an hour upon waking up on Saturday and Sunday. The thinking is that the body's internal clock can acclimate better with natural sunlight or light from the Litebook in the morning. "I think a lot of (these) things are odd because you don't do it on a normal basis," Ferguson said of all these things the Jets will try this week. "You don't normally wear blue blockers or have (artificial) sunlight while you are eating breakfast. Those are things that you don't normally do. But we don't normally play in London." "I have gone to London, not for sports, but you do feel the difference," Ferguson added. "If you don't handle it right, you can be a little jet-lagged for a couple of days." 9 P a g e

This will be Darrelle Revis' first trip to London and he says he will follow the advice given to the team such as getting five hours of sleep on the flight to London on Thursday night even if it means going to bed earlier than normal. The team, which is also bringing its chef on the trip, will land in the morning over in London. "It is going to be tough," Revis said. "We are trying to treat this like we are going to a West Coast game but we are actually going the opposite.... We listen to try to do every step and everything the right way." Williams was listening to the sleep therapist too. Perhaps too well. "The main thing I got out of it is he said we should try to go to sleep a little earlier and wake up a little earlier than we have been," said Williams, whom coaches have praised this season for being a quick learner in the classroom. "He turned off the lights," Williams added of dozing off again. "I think he did it on purpose, to be honest, because he had a few things where people had to raise their hands. He was like, 'The only people not raising their hands are the people asleep.'" Bowles will probably be fine with players catching a few Zzzz's this past Monday as long as it leads to a 'W' on Sunday in London. Jets TE Jeff Cumberland out, WR Eric Decker iffy for Sunday (Rich Cimini) ESPN New York FLORHAM PARK, N.J. -- The New York Jets will be without tight end Jeff Cumberland and possibly wide receiver Eric Decker when they face the Miami Dolphins on Sunday in London. Cumberland has a concussion and is not expected to make the trip, Todd Bowles said Wednesday. Usually, teams don't rule out players until Friday, but the Jets are leaving for London late Thursday and it makes no sense medically to put a concussed player on a seven-hour flight. The Jets are carrying only two tight ends on the 53-man roster -- the other is Kellen Davis -- so they will add a player. Chances are, they will sign undrafted rookie Wes Saxton from the practice squad. The silver lining for the Jets is the tight-end position doesn't have a significant role in the offense. In fact, Cumberland has played only 41 percent of the offensive snaps, down from 84 percent a year ago. Decker, who missed last week's game with a sprained knee, didn't practice. Bowles said he's "not sure" if Decker will play Sunday. Clearly, the passing attack wasn't the same without him against the Philadelphia Eagles. The Jets could be down three offensive starters against Miami, because we already know right guard Willie Colon (sprained knee) is out. The Jets are targeting a Week 6 return. In other injury news, running back Chris Ivory (quadriceps) and cornerback Darrelle Revis (hamstring) practiced on a limited basis. Revis, who sat out the final series on Sunday, said he felt "fine." Bowles is hopeful that Ivory will have a heavier workload on Thursday. They're cautiously optimistic about his chances of playing. Linebacker Trevor Reilly (lacerated finger) didn't practice and is unlikely to play. Safety Jaiquawn Jarrett (sprained knee) also sat out; his status is up in the air. If he can't play, they could activate newly acquired 10 P a g e

safety Dion Bailey, who started the first two games for the Seattle Seahawks. Cornerback Antonio Cromartie (hip) and linebacker Quinton Coples (sprained elbow) were limited, but they're expected to play. NEW YORK POST Jets top pick takes cat nap during sleep meeting (Brian Costello) New York Post October 1, The Jets brought in a sleep specialist this week to advise the team on how to prepare for the time difference in London. The message worked too well, apparently. Rookie Leonard Williams was a little foggy on the details of the meeting because he was snoozing. I was kind of nodding off in that meeting, to be honest, Williams said. The guy was telling us it s all right to go to sleep and he shouldn t have said that. He turned off the lights. Williams made it clear he does not usually fall asleep in meetings but, He turned off the lights and Williams dozed. I was trying to pay attention, Williams said. The main thing I got out of it was that he said we should try to go to sleep a little earlier than we have been and wake up a little early than we have been because there is going to be a big time difference and we re going to be kind of jet-lagged. CB Darrelle Revis was limited in practice Wednesday with a hamstring injury, but he does not sound too concerned about his status for Sunday s game with the Dolphins. I m feeling fine, Revis said. I practiced today a little bit and moved around. We ll see how practice goes tomorrow, and I just have to keep progressing. In other injury news, WR Eric Decker (knee) did not practice. Coach Todd Bowles said he is unsure if Decker will play this week. RB Chris Ivory (quad) was limited. Bowles said he is hopeful Ivory can practice more Thursday and play Sunday. TE Jeff Cumberland (concussion) has been ruled out for Sunday s game. It sounds like LB Trevor Reilly (finger) won t play either. S Jaiquawn Jarrett (knee) did not practice. CB Antonio Cromartie (hip) was limited. The team waived NT Deon Simon, their seventh-round pick from this year s draft. It is possible the Jets cut Simon to clear a roster spot for a tight end. With Cumberland out, Bowles said the team will either sign a free agent or sign Wes Saxton from the practice squad. Eat your Wheaties : Jets first-time right guard must block Suh (Brian Costello) New York Post 11 P a g e

Jets coach Todd Bowles had some advice for Brian Winters, who is making his first start at right guard this week and draws the plum assignment of blocking the Dolphins Ndamukong Suh. Just eat your Wheaties, Bowles said with a chuckle. That s all you can do. He s going to be there. Brian s a tough guy. He s going to fight. He better. Suh is one of the best defensive players in football. That s the reason Miami signed him to a six-year, $114 million megadeal in March. The Jets have to face Suh without starting right guard Willie Colon, who sprained his right knee in Sunday s loss to the Eagles. Suh generally lines up over the right-guard spot. Winters will start in Colon s place. Winters, who never has started at right guard before but did make 19 starts at left guard over the past two seasons, said he is not going to treat this differently. I m going to treat this like any other game and continue to work and study, Winters said. Right tackle Breno Giacomini may be able to help Winters out at times, but he also has to worry about defensive end Cameron Wake, who plays on the same side. We want to play versus the best players, Giacomini said. This is a big game as far as Suh and Wake being on the same side basically all the time. As far as guard and tackle on the right side, it s a good challenge for us against two of the best players. We ll see how it goes. Giacomini has faced Suh before, the last time coming a year ago when the Jets faced the Lions, Suh s former team. Giacomini said Suh is dangerous because of everything he can do. He looks so big and powerful, but he has some speed and he knows how to use his technique, Giacomini said. He can get skinny. He can go power. He can go long arm. His tool box of defensive moves or techniques that he uses is pretty full. He can change it up at anytime and he is good at pretty much everything he does. Jets quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick said he is hoping he does not see much of Suh on Sunday in London. He s a great player, Fitzpatrick said. Obviously, he signed for all that money for a reason. He s supremely talented. They have a few of them on that defense that you have to know where they are on every play and really pay a lot of attention to it. It s him, but there s a lot of other guys up front. They don t have a ton of sacks, but they re going to come because there s a lot of talent and talent on the back end as well. Bowles was asked if there is a key to slowing Suh down. Him not playing, he said jokingly. So far, though, Suh has not had an immediate impact in Miami. He has no sacks or quarterback hits. I think he s coming along, Dolphins coach Joe Philbin said. I thought he played his best game on Sunday. He s done a really good job in the locker room. He s an extremely hard worker, and football is very important to him. So far so good. As a team, the Dolphins have just one sack. Bowles said not to be fooled by that stat, though. I know they can get to the quarterback, Bowles said. I don t think you judge defensive linemen on sacks. When we played Indy, we only had one sack but you had 11 quarterback hits. These guys can hit the quarterback. The sacks will come. They come in bunches. I have no doubt in my mind that they ll get theirs. I just hope it s not this week. 12 P a g e

Why the Dolphins may regret letting Todd Bowles go (George Willis) New York Post October 1, In a way, this is the Dolphins worst nightmare Todd Bowles coming back all these years later to taunt them for not selecting him as their head coach in Bowles was the interim head coach in Miami, succeeding Tony Sparano, who was let go after going 4-9 following a 0-7 start. At the time, it was known owner Stephen Ross was going to clean house at the end of the year, but Bowles welcomed the promotion from defensive coordinator to interim head coach for the final three games of the 2011 season. You re weeks in and I m not carrying heading coach material around, Bowles was saying Wednesday. You just have to adjust and manage the team as best you can and manage the coaches as best you can. The Dolphins went 2-1 under Bowles over those final three weeks. A division win at Buffalo was followed by a narrow loss at New England before closing with a triumph over Rex Ryan s Jets. Dolphins defensive end Jason Taylor presented Bowles with a game ball after the victory in Buffalo to honor his first win as an NFL head coach, but it wasn t long before the Dolphins named Green Bay offensive coordinator Joe Philbin as the franchise s ninth head coach. Four seasons later, Bowles is in his rookie year as the Jets head coach while rumors are swirling in Miami that Philbin is on the brink of being fired. The Jets are 2-1 and feeling optimistic, while the 1-2 Dolphins are desperate after consecutive losses to the Jaguars and the Bills. It hasn t been the type of football I envision us playing, Philbin said after a loss to Buffalo on Sunday in Sun Life Stadium. Philbin is in Miami and has yet to manage a winning season. Now here comes Bowles, whose lasting impression in Dolphins colors was being celebrated for beating the Jets. As we know, Bowles spent 2012 in Philadelphia where he started as the secondary coach but became the defensive coordinator by October when Juan Castillo was dismissed. He spent the next two years as the defensive coordinator in Arizona before the Jets gave him the wellearned chance to be his own man again. Bowles never has said a bad word about not getting the job in Miami. He said he was happy for the experience. It helps you understand that there are things that are going to happen every day you re going to have to deal with that have nothing to do with football, he said of what he learned during those three games in Miami. You get an overall feel for the managerial part of it. It helps you see things faster. It helped him be ready for the unexpected from the Jets. From Sheldon Richardson s suspension to Geno Smith s broken jaw to the logistics of playing a game in London, Bowles already has endured his share of unusual issues. 13 P a g e

After a loss to the Eagles on Sunday at MetLife Stadium, this week would be better served focused entirely on football. But the Jets are preparing for their venture to Europe with seminars on sleeping and tips on wearing tinted glasses to aid eye stress. This is another week where the schedule is a little different, said cornerback Darrelle Revis. We ve just got to deal with it the best way we can. Philbin s job could well be on the line on Sunday. It s a big game for Bowles, too, a test of how he can get his team refocused after a loss amid the distraction of traveling to Europe. If the Jets win, the Dolphins may start to think they hired the wrong guy in NJ ADVANCE MEDIA Jets happy for 'great teammate' Michael Vick as he gets chance to start for Pittsburgh Steelers (Darryl Slater) NJ Advance Media October 1, er FLORHAM PARK The Jets' flight for London leaves around 6 p.m. Thursday, as they head across the Atlantic to face the Dolphins on Sunday. About two and a half hours later, former Jets and Eagles quarterback Michael Vick will make his debut start for the Steelers, in place of Ben Roethlisberger, who is out four to six weeks with a knee injury. Jets right guard Willie Colon plans to watch the Steelers' game Thursday against the Ravens. And Colon will be pulling for Vick, as will at least a couple other Jets who played with Vick last season, his lone year in New York. Colon likes watching football, period. (He won't make the London trip because of a sprained MCL.) He also used to play for the Steelers, and has several good friends in the organization. Roethlisberger is one of Colon's closest pals. But Colon also grew close to Vick last season. So Colon wants good things for the 35-year-old Vick, in his first start with the Steelers. "I'm rooting the Steelers on," Colon said. "I'm real good friends with Mike, and I think Mike is going to do a great job for them. I think the offense they have, with being more run-dominated and play action, that fits Mike's game." Last year with the Jets, "Mike was awesome," Colon said. "He was the ultimate teammate, easy to talk to, always willing to be around guys. Not one time was he Hollywood. From the day he walked in, he was a football player. His approach and how he went about the game was amazing. It just sucks that we didn't quite utilize him the best way we could've." What does Colon mean by that? "There was just a lot going on for him," Colon said. "I think a lot of what he was doing and what his role was was a little gray when he first got here. But he handled it like a professional." 14 P a g e

After the Jets signed Vick, they held a non-competition in training camp between him and Geno Smith. The Jets handed Smith the starting job. He wound up starting 13 games, while Vick got three starts. Neither quarterback was all that effective in Marty Mornhinweg's offense. While Colon stays home and watches Ravens-Steelers, some of his Jets teammates might try to watch on the seven-hour flight to London. They also remember Vick fondly. "Vick is a good friend," said safety Calvin Pryor, a second-year pro whose locker last season was situated a couple stalls away from Vick's. "We talked [last season]. I'm going to just keep whatever he told me to myself. They were helpful [things]. We just talked personal stuff, what goes on day to day. He was a great teammate and a better person." Pryor is happy to see Vick getting another chance to start, 14 years after Vick made his NFL debut. "It's definitely a good thing," Pryor said. "I'm pretty sure whatever team he went to, he was going to find his way and just play his role." Wide receiver Quincy Enunwa was also a rookie last season. He spent almost all of last year on the practice squad. He got to know Vick through practice reps. "He was the quarterback for the scout team a lot of the time, so me and him kind of built a little relationship, in terms of I got to catch the ball from him a few times," Enunwa said. "He was a good guy, a really good guy." Enunwa noticed Vick's "presence" last season, in terms of how he influenced younger players. "Just the way he carried himself and the things he did," Enunwa said. "When he was out here, the one thing he never stopped doing was have fun. He was always having fun at practice. That was one thing I always saw in him. He really loves the game. He still has a lot of talent. "You always want to see somebody that you played with, that you know still has time, you want to see them back out there. So it's cool to know that he's back out there playing, and hopefully he does well." Darrelle Revis, Eric Decker, Chris Ivory, Jeff Cumberland, Antonio Cromartie Jets injury update (Darryl Slater) NJ Advanced Media art_river FLORHAM PARK Here's a rundown of the Jets' injuries, after Wednesday's practice, as they prepare for Sunday's game in London against the Dolphins. The following players did not practice Wednesday, according to coach Todd Bowles: right guard Willie Colon (sprained MCL), wide receiver Eric Decker (sprained knee), tight end Jeff Cumberland (concussion), wide receiver Chris Owusu (knee scope), outside linebacker Trevor Reilly (finger cut infection), safety Jaiquawn Jarrett (sprained knee), and cornerback Darrin Walls (hamstring). These guys were limited: running back Chris Ivory (quadriceps), cornerback Darrelle Revis (hamstring), outside linebacker Quinton Coples (elbow), and cornerback Antonio Cromartie (hip). Bowles didn't mention Cromartie as being limited, but Cromartie was on the injury report, which was released after Bowles' press conference. It's probably just a rest-related thing for Cromartie, who has dealt with hip issues in recent years. 15 P a g e

Colon and Owusu have already been ruled out for Sunday's game. Bowles said Cumberland and Reilly are both unlikely to play against the Dolphins. Bowles has said Coples' injury is not serious. Decker and Ivory, two of the Jets' most important offensive players, didn't participate in Sunday's loss to the Eagles. Bowles said he's "hopeful" Ivory can do more in Thursday's practice. Bowles said he is "still waiting on Decker," and is "not sure" about the receiver's status for Sunday. Regarding Revis, Bowles said, "I'm hopeful he'll be OK." Revis was technically a game-time decision against the Eagles, because of a groin injury, but he played. It seems like there's a good chance that same scenario plays out again this week. Revis, who tweaked his hamstring against the Eagles, said Wednesday that he felt fine during practice, and that there's a chance he could be limited in practice all week and still play in London. The absence of Cumberland knocks the Jets down to just one healthy tight end, blocking tight end Kellen Davis, since Jace Amaro (shoulder) is out for the year. Bowles said the Jets will either sign a tight end or promote undrafted rookie Wes Saxton from the practice squad. Jets on Wednesday cut nose tackle Deon Simon, their seventh-round draft pick this year, which opens up a roster spot that could be used on a tight end. Brian Winters will replace Colon as the starting right guard for at least this game. Colon said he plans to return in time for the Jets' next game, Oct. 18 against Washington, since they have their bye after the London trip. "I plan on finishing the season strong, and it's all about being smart at this point," said Colon, a 10th-year veteran who had started every game for the Jets at right guard since the beginning of 2013 a run of 35 straight games. Colon, who won't make the trip to London, said he hurt his right knee. He underwent arthroscopic surgery on his left knee after the 2013 season. Even before this sprained MCL in his right knee, Colon had been dealing with lingering pain in both knees something that requires constant maintenance. "It's just my condition, man," Colon said. "They are what they are." 5 Todd Bowles Jets takeaways: Why that terrible replay challenge? (Dom Cosentino) NJ Advance Media ml#incart_river FLORHAM PARK The Jets were back at work Wednesday with a practice at One Jets Drive to prepare for Sunday's game against the Dolphins in London. The team isn't planning to fly to the UK until Thursday evening. A quick recap of what head coach Todd Bowles had to say during his daily press conference: 1. Tight end depth. With Jeff Cumberland (concussion) basically ruled out for Sunday, Kellen Davis is the only healthy tight end on the roster, unless one want to also count Quincy Enunwa, a wideout who can function as an H-back but who does not play with his hand on the ground. Bowles said the Jets haven't 16 P a g e

ruled out the possibility of adding a free-agent tight end, but he also said they could promote Wes Saxton off the practice squad. They already cleared a roster spot Wednesday by waiving defensive lineman Deon Simon, their seventh-round pick. 2. Adding a running back? The Jets worked out three running backs on Tuesday, including former Giants fullback Henry Hynoski and ex-eagles running back Bryce Brown. A sign Chris Ivory's quad injury is going to be a lingering problem? Ivory did not play last week against the Eagles, and he was limited at practice Wednesday. "Just looking for depth," Bowles said. "We bring guys in every Tuesday, but if people get hurt, you want to know you can reach out and sign somebody instead as opposed to just working them out and try to guess at that point in time." 3. On that failed replay challenge. Bowles is 0-for-3 on replay challenges this year, but Sunday's was the worst of the bunch: He challenged an incompletion in which wideout Jeremy Kerley's elbow clearly landed out of bounds before both of Kerley's feet touched down inbounds. But Bowles said his staff up in the booth didn't get to see the replay before deciding to throw the challenge flag. "The replay booth was coming in late upstairs; we weren't getting a good picture of it," Bowles said. "We were all standing right there on the sidelines; it was just a matter of whether the elbow hit before the [second] leg. The leg was inbounds, and it was close. We felt like it was worth a challenge." 4. On Ndamukong Suh. Bowles said Suh, the Dolphins' outstanding (and expensive) new defensive tackle, is "still the same dominant guy as he was in Detroit." The key to slowing him down? "Him not playing." Brian Winters is starting at right guard in place of the injured Willie Colon. Asked whether there was anything the Jets could do to help Winters block Suh, Bowles said, "Just eat your Wheaties." 5. Storm contingencies. With Hurricane Joaquin heading up the east coast this weekend, Bowles said the Jets are considering other options for their return trip from London. As of right now, they're scheduled to fly back immediately after the game. Which Jets player nodded off during team's sleep specialist talk? (Darryl Slater) NJ Advance Media #incart_river FLORHAM PARK Jets defensive end Leonard Williams, the team's first-round draft pick this year, is a refreshingly candid young man. After the opener against the Browns, Williams criticized his play, and said he wasn't in good enough physical condition. He vowed to change that. (Jets coach Todd Bowles said Williams' physical condition was fine for that game, and he just got overly excited during warmups.) On Wednesday, Williams was asked about the Jets preparing to play the Dolphins in London on Sunday. The Jets brought in a sleep specialist Monday, to speak with the players about getting proper rest before flying to London, since it is five hours ahead of East Coast time. Amusingly enough, Williams mentioned he nodded off during part of the sleep specialist's presentation. So Williams was actually practicing the specialist's advice as he spoke to the Jets. To be fair to Williams, he said the specialist turned off the lights during his presentation, which made it easier to fall asleep. 17 P a g e
