2 SOUTH ALABAMA S LAST GAME Georgia State 65, South Alabama 54 February 7, 2015 MOBILE, Ala. Georgia State went on a 13-4 run late in the second half and shot 60 percent after halftime in a win over the University of South Alabama men s basketball team Saturday afternoon at the Mitchell Center. The Panthers win for the fifth time in six games and go to 16-8 overall and 9-4 in the Sun Belt Conference. The Jaguars fall to 7-17 and 5-8. USA rallied from a 12-point deficit in the first half and led by as many as four early in the second but GSU proved to be too tough in the late stages. The one thing I told the guys is that teams are going to make runs, Jaguar head coach Matthew Graves said. We re going to make a run, they re going to make a run. Right now what we re running into is our runs, whether it s 8-2, 12-4 or whatever kind of run you want to put together, that run is to put us back in the game. We re not making that run when it s a tie game and going up six or eight, and kind of putting some pressure on them. I m certainly very proud of how resilient the guys are and we need to figure out a way, when we re not scoring, to really get some stops and dig in so we don t dig ourselves such a hole. The Jaguars shot a season-low 27.8 percent from the floor, including 25.9 percent in the second half, while the Panthers hit 42.9 percent for the game and 60.0 percent after halftime. A couple of those shots late were rushed to try to catch back up, Graves said. I felt, especially in the first half, we got some really good looks from the 3-point line. We started rushing them a little bit as the score kind of got away from us. Guys got a little bit tighter. We just needed to get that one or two in a row to settle us down. It all really starts with if we get out in transition and get some free throws, we start feeling good about ourselves a little bit. We struggled to do that in the first half, and that s one of the reasons we got behind. R.J. Hunter led all players with 19 points, and added five assists and three blocks and steals each. Kevin Ware had 15 points and Markus Crider added 14. Freshman Taishaun Johnson (Indianapolis, Ind.) had 17 points on three 3-pointers for the Jags, and senior Dionte Ferguson (Prattville, Ala.) had 12 and three blocks. I think (Taishaun) did a very solid job, Graves noted. Taishaun is one of our most competitive guys. He needs to continue to play like that and practice like that all the time as well and be competitive and stay focused. He scored the ball well. Again, I thought he did a really great job on R.J., who got 19 points. Sophomore Ken Williams (Houston, Texas) scored all 11 of his points in the second half and junior Barrington Stevens III (Allen, Texas) poured in 10 points. Freshman Abdul Lewis (Newark, N.J.) tied his career high with 12 rebounds. The two teams traded a couple of big runs early in the second half and stood at halfway through the period. From there, Ware started the game-changing run with a layup, five different Panthers contributed points, and almost seven minutes later, Georgia State led GSU s defense held USA to just one field goal in almost 10 minutes, as the Jags went 1-for-9 with four turnovers and trailed by eight with just under two minutes left. Williams hit a 3-pointer his only one of the night with 56.7 seconds left to pull South Alabama within 59-54, but Georgia State went 6-for-6 at the foul line in the final minute and the Jags missed their last three shots. I thought it was a great team win, I thought the guys really buckled down defensively, Georgia State head coach Ron Hunter said. I thought the guys just did a nice job. We willed ourselves to win; we had to have this one. This was a must win for us, we knew that and we got it and now we move on and get back to Atlanta. USA missed their first seven shots from the floor and fell behind with 3:31 left after a Hunter 3-pointer, but reeled off the next 12 points going 4-for-5 from the floor over a 3:14 stretch and two free throws from Hunter were the only thing that prevented a tie game at halftime. TROY S LAST GAME Appalachian State 65, Troy 62 February 7, 2015 BOONE, N.C. The Troy men s basketball team tied the game up with just under four minutes to go after an 11-0 run, but couldn t score until the one second mark as it fell to Appalachian State, 65-62, at Holmes Center on Saturday afternoon. Four Trojans tallied double figures in an equally balanced attack. Kevin Thomas led Troy with 13 points, shooting 6-of-9 from the floor. Chris Bilbo, who was 2-of-2 from long range, chipped in 12 points. Musa Abdul-Aleem and Wesley Person added 11 and 10 points, respectively. Abdul-Aleem and Thomas each reeled in a game-high nine boards. Troy (9-13, 4-9) relentlessly fought back throughout the game, but was unable to take the final lead of the contest. Trailing 39-31, Troy went on a 10-3 run to chip away at App State s lead at with 13:09 to play. The squads traded buckets until the Trojans went on an 11-0 run to tie the game at 59. Chris Burgess and Griffin Kinney hit a pair of baskets to put the game just out of reach for the Trojans as it fell at App State, To open the game, App State jumped out to a quick lead with its free throw shooting, but Troy battled back on an 8-2 run to take its first and only lead of the contest at with 12 minutes to go in the first. Appalachian State responded with a 10-2 run South Alabama Men s Basketball Game Notes - Page 2 OPENING TIP South Alabama is averaging 53.2 points in its last five losses. In the Jaguars five Sun Belt Conference wins they average 84.0 points, but only 62.8 points in eight losses. USA has scored 53, 55, 61, 43 and 54 points in its last five defeats. After scoring 18 points apiece in the first half at Louisiana-Monroe and Texas State, the Jaguars scored 24 before halftime Saturday. Twelve of those points came in a span of 2:52, a 12-0 first-half run that tied the game at Freshman Taishaun Johnson led the Jaguars with 17 points vs. Georgia State; he scored 15 points in the previous two games combined. Sophomore Ken Williams scored all 11 points Saturday in the second half, going 6-for-6 at the free-throw line, and tied his career high with seven rebounds. He had one 3-pointer, his fewest in a game since going 0-for-5 at Appalachian State on Jan. 22. Williams is averaging 2.6 treys per game since the start of January, and 2.4 per game on the season, fourth best in the conference. He needs three triples to tie for 10th all time at South Alabama. Williams is seventh in the league in scoring average at 14.9 ppg. Williams averaged 15.5 points against Troy last season, shooting 48.0 percent from the floor and 41.2 percent from 3-point land. He had 18 on four triples with four assists in Mobile. Freshman Abdul Lewis tied his career high with 12 rebounds Saturday, grabbing five offensive and seven defensive boards. He did that without attempting a single field goal. Lewis 12 boards moved him up to a team-best 6.7 per game, eighth in the SBC. Junior Barrington Stevens III committed three turnovers against the Panthers, his first in four games. He had 12 assists without a miscue the previous three games, including six in a win over Louisiana-Lafayette. Stevens leads the Sun Belt in assist/turnover ratio at 2.3, and is eighth in assists (3.4 apg). Stevens scored 10 points on 4 of 10 shooting vs. GSU and drilled two 3-pointers. He scored four points combined on 2 of 14 (14.3%) shooting in the previous two contests. Stevens averaged 12.0 points vs. Troy a season ago, converting 10 of his 18 attempts from the floor, including 9 of 11 inside the arc. He had nine assists with just three turnovers, including a six-assist, oneturnover performance in Troy. With three blocks Saturday, senior Dionte Ferguson now has 12 in his last four games, and ranks third in the league with 1.5 per contest. TROY AT A GLANCE No. Name Pos. Ht. Wt. Yr. Pts. Rbs. The Trojans and Mountaineers went bucket for bucket until the end of the half until free throws by Christian Harrison and Kelton Ford allowed Troy to go into the half trailing Appalachian State (9-12, 6-6) was led by Chris Burgess and Frank Eaves as each tallied 15 points on the night. The duo shot 6-of-10 from beyond the arc. Tommy Spagnolo and Eaves led the Mountaineers on the glass with eight rebounds apiece. In the game, Troy s big men out scored App State in the paint, 30-24, despite early foul trouble. The Trojans shot 22-of-55 (40 percent) from the floor and was just 5-of-17 (29.4) from 3-point range. The Trojans forced 15 Mountaineer turnovers, while only turning the ball over nine times, which allowed Troy to outscore App state 20-6 in points off turnovers. In the second half, the Trojans outscored the Mountaineers, In the game, Troy led for just two minutes. THE LAST TIME THEY MET South Alabama 86, Troy 78 February 22, 2014 MOBILE, Ala. The University of South Alabama men s basketball team jumped out to a 26-point lead in the first half and got a double-double from senior Augustine Rubit (Houston, Texas) to hold off Troy Saturday night at the Mitchell Center. The Jaguars win for the second time in three games and move to 9-18 overall and 3-11 in the Sun Belt Conference. The Trojans drop to 9-17, Troy twice cut the lead down to six in the final eight minutes but the Jags answered each time to pull away. What I told our guys was, this is a must win game, USA head coach Matthew Graves said. If you want to compete in New Orleans for a conference championship you have to win tonight. I thought our energy and effort from the opening tip was outstanding. We got off to a great start. The first half was as well-played a first half that we ve had all year, on both ends of the floor. Then, in the second half, we really played to protect the lead instead of just playing the game and keep attacking. We got really conservative and I thought Troy got on a great run there. They have some tremendous shooters. Certainly if you give up 54 points in a half, you don t expect to win very often, but our guys made enough plays down the stretch. Rubit recorded team-high totals of 22 points, 10 rebounds and five assists. The five helpers are a new career high and he shot 8-for-15 from the floor with two blocks. I think we re going to have to go back and make sure he did get five assists, Graves said. It s probably some kind of record for him. He s doing a better job of when teams come to double and being strong with the ball. Earlier in the season, he probably had three or four turnovers in that post-double stuff. He did a great job of being strong with the ball, picking his spots on the kickouts and our guards were ready to shoot the basketball. South Alabama placed a season-high five players in double-digit scoring, with freshman Ken Williams (Manvel, Texas) pouring in 18 one shy of his career high with four assists, senior Antoine Allen (Baltimore, Md.) adding 15 off the bench, and sophomore Barrington Stevens III (Allen, Texas) and junior Mychal Ammons (Vicksburg, Miss.) tallying 11 apiece. Williams tallied 14 in the first half alone on 4-for-6 shooting from 3-point land. He didn t score again until the 6:39 mark of the second half but the buckets came at key junctures to keep the Jags on top. I thought he played with a lot of confidence and he was really relaxed, Graves said. I thought our guys got him the ball in positions where he could score and he mixed in: he attacked off the bounce, he was spotted up, he was ready to shoot the basketball. He had a really breakout performance with 18 points and four assists. I was really excited to see him do that. Williams hit back-to-back 3-pointers in the early moments to spark a 26-7 South Alabama run to open the game. The Jags made 11 of their first 17 attempts and finished off the spurt with nine unanswered points in a threeminute stretch. An 8-2 outburst pushed the advantage to 26 late in the first half and South Alabama led by 23 early in the second after a pair of buckets from freshmen Georgi Boyanov (Lovech, Bulgaria) before Troy made its move. The Trojans scored the next 12 points and took advantage of five missed shots and two Jaguar turnovers. Later, Troy went on a 12-3 run as USA went almost six minutes without a field goal to trail by six after a 3-pointer from Hunter Williams with 7:29 to play. The Jaguars answered with the next five points, and after Tevin Calhoun singlehandedly got the Trojans back within six, Rubit hit two free throws and got a tip-in for a 10-point advantage and Troy got only as close as eight the rest of the way. I do think fatigue played a little bit of a factor, Graves said of Troy s comeback attempt. We were on the road Thursday and with the quick turnaround and Aakim s (Saintil) limited minutes due to foul trouble. I think those guys got tired, but at the same time, Troy has a couple guys that can really shoot the basketball. When they get feeling good and get in a rhythm, they re certainly capable of making shots. We missed a couple switches and a couple things on our rotation. In large part, it was due to our fatigue and you have to credit Troy because they could have easily rolled over, but they kept fighting until the end. The Trojans got a game-high 24 points from Williams, who made five 3-pointers. Calhoun and Antoine Myers added 14 points each. THE JUICE IS LOOSE After a slump that saw him average 9.0 points and shoot 24.4 percent from the floor over four games, Ken Juice Williams broke out of that dry spell in grand fashion by averaging 24.0 points over his next five games, including four in a row with 23 or more, becoming the first USA player since Jeff Hodge in to score 23 or more in four straight games The streak included a career-high 28 at Louisiana-Lafayette (1/17) on 9 of 14 shooting from the floor and 3 of 4 from 3-point range, and a then personal-best 26 on 8 of 12 shooting and 5 of 6 from distance vs. Appalachian State The 23-point streak was broken against Arkansas-Little Rock (1/19) with 20, making him the first Jaguar since Demetric Bennett in the campaign to have 20 or more in five straight outings In this five game stretch, Williams converted 59.3 percent (35-59) of his shots overall and 66.7 percent (18-27) of his 3-point attempts, averaging 3.6 triples per contest Prior to his outburst, he was shooting 30.6 percent overall and 31.2 percent from South Alabama Men s Basketball Game Notes - Page 3

4 OFFENSIVE EXPLOSION South Alabama reached the 100-point plateau for the first time in over three seasons on Jan. 8 in its victory over Appalachian State It was the most points by the program since scoring 123 vs. William Carey on Feb. 25, 2003, the first 100-point game since putting up 102 vs. Alcorn State on Dec. 11, 2011, and the first 100-point game against a league opponent since a win vs. Florida Atlantic on Jan. 6, 2007 Six players scored double-digit points the first time that had occurred since Feb. 24, 2011 vs. UALR led by sophomore Ken Williams game- and career-high 26 points The Jaguars shot 61.2 percent from the floor the first 60-percent shooting game since and 58.8 percent (10-for-17) from 3-point land USA also made 44 trips to the free-throw line, converting 34 times The Jags scored 48 points in the first half and 56 in the second, season highs in both halves. QUADRUPLE DOUBLE-DOUBLE Over a four-game stretch in November and December, the Jaguars had a different player record a double-double in each contest It was the first career double-double for each player and they also set new career highs in both categories in the process Freshman Taishaun Johnson had the first in the run, a 15-point, 10-rebound performance in a loss at Detroit He also led the team in assists (3) and steals (2) against the Titans Senior Dionte Ferguson had 12 points and 14 rebounds at Miami, tying the most rebounds by a USA player since February 2013 Nine of his 14 boards on the night came on the offensive end Sophomore Georgi Boyanov posted gamehigh totals of 14 points and 10 rebounds in USA s win over Spring Hill, shooting 5 of 7 from the floor and 3 of 3 from the free-throw line Freshman Abdul Lewis came off the bench to score 17 points with 12 rebounds vs. Middle Tennessee, shooting 7-for-11 from the field. 7 Matthew Graves Head Coach Butler, nd Season From the moment he was hired in March 2013, University of South Alabama men s basketball head coach Matthew Graves made it a top priority to change the culture at South Alabama. After spending 17 years at Butler University as both a student-athlete and coach, Graves set out to take the Butler philosophy and install that in the Jaguar men s basketball program. Entering his second season, Graves is laying the foundation for success. From revamping academics and a greater involvement in community service activities, to restructuring off-season workouts and practices to emphasize skill development, to the style of play during games, every aspect of the program has been evaluated and fine-tuned to Graves standards. The process aims to establish long-term prosperity both on and off the court, contending for championships while graduating student-athletes year in, and year out. Overhauling the academic program resulted in the team s highest GPA in over five years, and both seniors, Antoine Allen and Augustine Rubit earned their degrees. On the court, his first year in charge resulted in an record with a roster that included 10 first- or second-year players, with inexperience rearing its ugly head in the 11 times the Jags let a second-half lead slip away. However, Rubit set both school and conference records for rebounds and became the first Jaguar to earn All-Sun Belt recognition four times. Rubit finished in the top 10 in five different individual categories and ranked third in the league in rebounding (9.4 rpg) and sixth in scoring (17.0 ppg). Graves style of play and work on the court helped Barrington Stevens III go from a 0.7 assist-turnover ratio his freshman campaign to a 2.0 as a sophomore, the best ratio by a South Alabama player since Graves spent the previous 10 seasons as an assistant on the staff at Butler, where his efforts helped the Bulldogs advance to back-to-back NCAA Tournament The Graves Ledger South Alabama Men s Basketball Game Notes - Page 7 championship games and appear in the event in six of the last seven years. During his tenure at Butler, Graves helped the program to an overall record of (71.3%), a berth in national postseason tournaments each of the last eight seasons and eight straight years with 20-plus victories. Following the campaign that saw the Bulldogs finish 33-5 after falling to Duke in the national title contest, he was promoted to associate head coach; in his first year in that role, Butler returned to the NCAA Tournament championship game after defeating Pittsburgh, Florida and Wisconsin the first, second and fourth seeds in the Southeast Region while going on to post a record. In , the Bulldogs first in the Atlantic 10 Conference, they went 27-9 including an 11-5 mark in league action. In addition to advancing to the third round of the NCAA Tournament, Butler defeated two of the four No. 1 seeds in the event Indiana and Gonzaga during the regular season. Graves first helped lead Butler back to postseason play in , when the school went after earning a first-round win in the National Invitation Tournament. The following year, the Bulldogs won the NIT Season Tip-Off and advanced to the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament before falling to eventual champion Florida en route to a final record of Butler finished 30-4 after claiming the Horizon League Tournament title and a first-round NCAA win in , advancing to the NCAA Tournament again the next season while posting a 26-6 mark. While on the Butler staff, Graves was listed No. 2 on CollegeInsider.com s ranking of top 25 mid-major assistants in 2009 while the previous year FoxSports.com recognized him as one of the top 10 mid-major assistants in the country. Graves started as an assistant coach at North Central and Ben Davis High Schools in Indianapolis, joining the Bulldog staff as coordinator of men s basketball operations in During his first two seasons at Butler, the Bulldogs won 53 games and advanced to the Sweet 16 of the 2003 NCAA Tournament. As a player, Graves lettered four years at Butler and was part of a program that posted a (63.8%) mark while he was in school. He was team captain each of his final two seasons, when the Bulldogs went and 22-11, respectively, after winning the Midwestern Collegiate Conference Tournament title and advancing to the NCAA Tournament. Graves was the third-leading scorer on the team in when Butler made its first NCAA Tournament appearance in 35 years, while as a senior he was chosen the squad s most valuable player and was named to the MCC all-tournament team after recording 18 points in the championship contest.
