5 Milwaukee Women s Basketball Prospectus Page MILWAUKEE WOMEN S BASKETBALL NOTEBOOK Getting Ready For Other New Faces The season is expected to play out like most of the previous seasons under Sandy Botham - with the Panthers in the thick of the race for the Horizon League title. UWM s title hopes are bolstered by the return of three starters - Nichole Drummond, Molly O Brien and Aubrey Hampton. At least five others who were a regular part of last year s rotation also return, while the Panthers have a number of fresh faces expected to make an immediate contribution, including Boston University transfer Meredith Onson. In all, UWM has 10 players back that started at least one game last season. A Quick Look Back The season was full of ups and downs for the Panthers, and their final mark of probably sums up the roller coaster ride for UWM a year ago. The Panthers never won or lost more than three-straight games, but they did have two three-game losing streaks and three three-game winning streaks. UWM nearly upset 18th-ranked Iowa and overcame a late, double-digit deficit to win at Detroit, but then faltered down the stretch, ending the year with three-straight losses. Honoring The Returnees Nichole Drummond is as eager as anyone in a Panther uniform to get the season underway. Drummond tore her ACL in a game at Cleveland State Feb. 12 and wound up missing the last five games of the season. The Panthers will be happy to have her back, too, as they went just 2-3 in those five games. Drummond appears to have returned to health over the summer and should be 100 percent when practice opens in October. On The Comeback Trail Returning starters Nichole Drummond and Molly O Brien have each caught the eye of the rest of the Horizon League and are facing high expectations in the coming year. Drummond, a member of the All-Newcomer Team in 2003, earning First-Team All-Horizon League honors last year, averaging 13.7 ppg and 5.6 rpg. Meanwhile, O Brien earned both Second-Team All-Horizon League honors and All-Defensive Team honors a year ago. The senior averaged 9.4 ppg and 7.0 rpg. UWM is the only school in the league to have two all-league performers returning this season. Transferring Some Talent UWM fans will get their first in-game look at transfer Meredith Onson during the season. Onson, who was an all-state performer at Oshkosh West High School, spent the season at Boston University and then sat out last season at UWM because of NCAA transfer rules. During her year at BU, Onson averaged 3.4 points and 2.4 rebounds while starting 17 games. At Oshkosh West, Onson was the consensus Wisconsin Player of the Year as a senior in leading the Indians to the WIAA Division I state title. In addition to Meredith Onson, the roster will have at least five newcomers and an additional transfer eligible to play during the season. Those new to the program are Turquoise McCain from Milwaukee Riverside High School, Traci Edwards of Menasha High School, Emily Markert of Brookfield East High School, Katie Fournier of Moline (Ill.) High School and Kim Wypiszynski of Ashwaubenon High School. McCain was an AP All-State honoree this past season while leading her team to the state semifinals. Edwards was the co-player of the Year in the Fox Valley Association, earning honorable mention all-state honors. Markert was a second-team all-state honoree as a senior after earning thirdteam honors as a junior. Fournier earned second-team AP All- State honors in Illinois this past year after claiming fourth-team honors as a junior. Wypiszynski averaged nearly 14 points and nine rebounds per game while helping Ashwaubenon High School into the top 10 in the state throughout the season. The transfer is Aubri Rote, who played the season at Lakeland College before sitting out last year at UWM. Seeing The Schedule Sandy Botham has never shied away from pitting her team against the top programs in the country, and it is looking like will be no different. While the entire schedule has not yet been finalized, the Panthers know they will open the year against Big 12 power Oklahoma in the Preseason Women s NIT. The non-league slate also includes trips to Iowa, Northwestern and Marquette, while UWM will host both DePaul and Wisconsin at the Klotsche Center. The Panthers will make their debut in an exhibition game against UW-Parkside Nov. 2 at the U.S. Cellular Arena. Home Sweet Home The Klotsche Center has always proven to be a difficult place for visiting teams to succeed, and the Panthers will be hoping to continue that trend during the campaign. In nine years under Sandy Botham, Milwaukee boasts a home record in league regular season games. That number has gotten even better recently, as UWM has won 40 of its last 46 home league games over the last six seasons. UWM has also posted two perfect home league campaigns, going 7-0 in both and Alltime under Botham, the Panthers are at home. The State Of Basketball In The Horizon League You don t need to look any further than Wisconsin for what s happening in Horizon League women s basketball. Either UWM or UW-Green Bay have been atop the league standings every season this decade, and the two have combined for a record in league-only games since the start of the season. Of those 26 losses, 10 have come in head-to-head matchups. UWGB has won six-straight league titles while UWM has a co-championship and five second place finishes in the last six years. The two schools are also the only schools from the league to advance to the NCAA Tournament in this decade.

6 Milwaukee Women s Basketball Prospectus Page 5 SANDY BOTHAM HEAD COACH 10TH SEASON AT UWM Sandy Botham wraps up her first decade as the head coach of the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee women s basketball team looking to make year number 10 a lot like the first nine. Botham has consistently kept the Panthers in the thick of the Horizon League title chase, including a secondplace finish last season. She s done it while also sending UWM against some of the best programs in the country during the non-league schedule. And, the campaign is shaping up as another good one for Botham and the Panthers. In Botham s nine years at UWM, she has compiled a mark, including a mark in Horizon League contests. She led the Panthers to their first-ever league crown and NCAA Tournament berth in 2001 and to a school-record 20 wins the following season. Plus, Botham s teams haven t finished below second place in the league since the season. The building process started right away for Botham, who took over a team that won just four games and led them to 16 wins in , earning Midwestern Collegiate Conference Coach of the Year honors in the process. That season started a trend for UWM under Botham s direction. The next year, the Panthers posted an eight-game winning streak and claimed a win over then-no. 13 Nebraska. The season then included a second-place finish in the MCC standings, including an undefeated league home campaign. Things got even better for the Panthers in the next two years, as UWM claimed its first ever regular season and tournament titles, while earning the school s first-ever NCAA Tournament berth in women s basketball. The Panthers ran through the league tournament in 2001, winning threestraight games in convincing fashion to earn an NCAA Tournament date with Duke. While the Panthers season ended in that game, UWM used that as a springboard for a recordsetting campaign. Botham and the Panthers won a school-record 20 games before being upset in the league tournament. Over the next three seasons, Botham s squad has continued to excel. The Panthers have compiled a record in league play and finished in second place each year. Milwaukee has been dominant at home versus Horizon League opponents under Botham, with that dominance reaching new heights of late. Under Botham s direction UWM owns a home record in Horizon League play. In the last six seasons, Milwaukee is 40-6 at home versus league competition, an.870 winning clip. Overall, Botham s teams have won nearly 70 percent of their home games. Not only has Botham led UWM to enormous team success, but she has also aided in individual player development. One look at the individual accolades earned during Botham s nine years in Milwaukee tells it all. During the Botham era, 23 players have been selected to the all-league and league all-newcomer teams, including two this past season. Botham recruited and helped mentor recently graduated Maria Viall, a two-time Horizon League Player of the Year, UWM s alltime leading scorer and the school s first-ever WBCA Regional All-America selection. Botham came to UWM in 1996 following a successful season as head coach at Beloit College in Beloit, Wis. Her team went 22-4 in , making it the most successful team in school history. That Beloit squad advanced to the second round of the NCAA Division III Tournament before losing to eventual national champion UW-Oshkosh. Before becoming a head coach at the collegiate level, Botham spent five seasons as an assistant at the University of Notre Dame under head coach Muffet McGraw. During her time in South Bend from , the Irish won the MCC regular-season title twice, the MCC tournament twice and twice went to the NCAA Tournament. Prior to her assistantship at her alma mater, Botham spent a year in Milwaukee, assisting Marquette University head coach Jim Jabir in As a player, Botham played at Notre Dame from A four-time All-MCC performer, she ranks sixth in career scoring (1,460), sixth in rebounding (773) and fourth in field goal percentage (.588). A native of Madison, Wis., Botham attended Madison West High School from where she was a standout in three different sports. In addition to basketball, Botham starred in volleyball and softball at West High. As a sophomore, Botham helped lead Madison West to the Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association Basketball state championship. Botham earned her bachelor s degree from Notre Dame in 1988 while majoring in psychology with a minor in business. Botham remained in South Bend for her graduate work, earning a Masters of Science in Adminstration from the school in 1990.

Panthers Add Seven New Faces To Mix In UWM s roster will be bolstered by the additional of five newcomers and two redshirts. The newcomers are: Turquoise McCain from Milwaukee Riverside High School; Traci Edwards of Menasha High School; Emily Markert of Brookfield East High School; Katie Fournier or Moline (Ill.) High School; and Kim Wypiszynski of Ashwaubenon High School. Meanwhile, transfers Meredith Onson and Aubri Rote will each be eligible to play this year after sitting out this past season. Rote, meanwhile, helped Lakeland College to the 2004 NCAA Division III Tournament before transferring to UWM last year. Rote was the leading scorer on that team and a standout for three years at Kettle Moraine Lutheran High School. McCain earned Associated Press All-State and Milwaukee Journal Sentinel All-Area honorable mention honors while leading Riverside to the WIAA Division 1 State Tournament semifinals and its first conference title in over 20 years. She also earned all-conference honors for the secondstraight season, posting per-game averages of 13 points, nine rebounds and four assists As a senior this past season, Edwards was the Co- Player of the Year in the Fox Valley Association, a unanimous first-team all-league selection and an all-state honorable mention honoree. She led the conference with 21.6 points, 12.2 rebounds and 3.3 blocks per game. Last season, she averaged over 20 points and almost 13 rebounds on her way to all-conference first-team and all-state honorable mention honors. Markert was a second-team all-state performer this past season after averaging ppg and 6.6 rpg. During her junior year, she helped lead Brookfield East to the semifinals of the WIAA Division I state championship. A 5-10 guard, Markert averged 13.7 points per game and 4.6 rebounds per contest. A two-time First-Team All-Greater Metro Conference selection and a third-team all-state selection as a junior, Markert paced the Spartans to a 23-2 overall record and perfect 14-0 league mark. Fournier comes to Milwaukee after earning second-team Associated Press All-State honors in Illinois. The 6-1 forward was the second-leading scorer and leading rebounder in the Western Big Six Conference, averaging 13 points and nine boards. As a junior she averaged 14.1 points and 8.6 rebounds, again leading the league in boards. A two-time first-team all-league honoree and a fourth-team all-state performer as a junior, Fournier was also the Quad City Times Player of the Year in Wypiszynski averaged nearly 14 points and nine rebounds per game for a talented Ashwaubenon squad that was rated in the top 10 in the state throughout the season. A 6-1 forward, Wypiszynski earned all-league and all-area recognition in each of the last two seasons and, as a junior, averaged 13.7 points and 5.8 rebounds while helping AHS to the state tournament.
