UCLA HOSTS INDIANA IN NCAA QUARTERFINALS The two-time Pac-10 Champion UCLA Bruins (20-1-1) the top seed and defending national champions play host to Indiana Friday night in the NCAA Quarterfinals... The Bruins are one win away from advancing to the College Cup for the second straight season... Friday night's matchup pairs two of the hottest teams in the bracket... UCLA is riding a 19- game unbeaten streak and Indiana has won or tied 15 consecutive games... The Bruins have not lost a game since dropping a 1-0 decision to Maryland on Sept The Hoosiers must back track to Sept. 18 for their last defeat, a 1-0 double-overtime loss at Notre Dame. The Bruins and Hoosiers have never met in the NCAA Quarterfinals, but have gone head-tohead three times in the semifinals since Indiana leads the postseason series 2-1, while UCLA holds a 7-6 advantage in the overall series... UCLA downed Tulsa 3-2 in NCAA second-round action (Nov. 26) and defeated Florida International 2-0 in the third round (Nov. 30). Four Pac-10 teams competed in the 2003 NCAA Championship, with UCLA and WASHINGTON receiving first round byes... CALIFORNIA fell to UC Santa Barbara in the second round, while the Huskies succumbed to St. Louis in third round action... Washington made its eighth NCAA appearance in the last nine seasons, while Cal made its third straight NCAA Championship appearance... UCLA is making its 21st consecutive NCAA appearance and 31st overall. Four Pac-10 teams have been invited to the NCAA men's soccer championship in each of the last three seasons, while three teams comprised the field in The Conference had five men's soccer-playing members in 2000 and 2001, before expanding to a six-team league in 2002 with the addition of Fresno State... The No. 1-ranked Bruins ( overall) take on Indiana Friday night in the NCAA Quarterfinals. Taylor paces the Conference in goals, with 14 in 21 games this year, and also ranks first in the league in points (36) and gamewinning goals (6). He averages 1.71 points per game to lead a highpowered offense that has scored 31 goals in its last 12 matches. His three career hat tricks, including two this season, set the new UCLA record. Taylor also tied the school record for most multliple-goal games in a season, with four on the year. A two-time honorable mention All-Pac-10 selection entering this season, Taylor was twice named Pac-10 Player of the Week this season (Sept. 2, Oct. 21) and the College Soccer News National Player of the Week (Oct. 19). He was a three-time Soccer America Team of the Week honoree in PAC-10 CO-FRESHMEN/NEWCOMERS OF THE YEAR: ROBBIE FINDLEY, FR F, OREGON STATE & CHAD BARRETT, FR F UCLA Findley, a freshman forward from Phoenix, Ariz., helped lead the Beavers to a overall record, a second-place finish in the Pac-10 (7-3-0) and Oregon State s second straight NCAA Championship berth. Emerging as one of the Pac-10 s top scoring threats in just his rookie season, Findley finished second on the team and third in the Pac-10 with 10 goals to lead all freshmen. His 0.53 goals per game average is also tops among Pac-10 freshmen and ranks third overall in the Conference. Findley ranks fourth in the Pac-10 in points (22) and points per game (1.16 avg). From Oct. 31 to Nov. 7, he put together a streak of four goals in three games. Findley received Pac-10 Player of the Week honors on Nov. 2, and was also named to the College Soccer News and Soccer America teams of the week for Nov. 2. Barrett, a freshman forward from Beaverton, Ore., has started 17 of 22 games for the Bruins and teams with Pac-10 Player of the Year Matt Taylor to lead the league s most potent offense. Barrett ranks second on the squad in goals (9), points (26) and assists (8, t2nd), a key component on a UCLA scoring offense that ranks fourth in the nation (2.45 gpg). Barrett leads the Pac-10 in shots (64) and shots per game (2.91 avg), while his 1.18 points per game average is the league s third-best mark. His 26 points are the most for a Bruin freshman in 13 years, since Joe-Max Moore amassed 32 in He has one three-assist, one-goal game (vs. Penn State in his collegiate debut) and one three-assist, two-goal game (vs Cal State Fullerton) to his credit. Barrett was named to the Soccer America Team of the Week for Sept and made the College Soccer News Team of the Week for Sept. 14. PAC-10 COACH OF THE YEAR TOM FITZGERALD, UCLA In Fitzgerald s second year leading the UCLA program, the Bruins captured their second straight Pac-10 title and are the favorite (No. 1 seed) to repeat as national champions in the NCAA College Cup. Fitzgerald s 2003 squad became the first Pac-10 men s soccer team to run the table (10-0-0) in Conference play.
