A MATCHUP RENEWED: Long Beach State plays Fresno State this weekend for the first time since the season this weekend, a stretch of 20 years between the two schools. Fresno State enters the game with a 3-1 overall record, and has defeated three Big West teams, winning at UC Riversid 39-30, at home against Pacific 66-61, and most recently on the road at Cal Poly FORMER CONFERENCE FOES: From 1958 to 1992, the 49ers and Bulldogs met twice a year as members of the same conference, first as the CCAA, then as the PCAA, and then finally as the Big West before Fresno State left to join the Western Athletic Conference. This is the first time the teams have met since the season directly after the Bulldogs departure, when the 49ers won in Fresno on December 30, BACK TO BACK: Fresno State and Long Beach State have engaged in a scheduling quirk, putting together a home-and-home package in the same season. Sunday, the team s will play in Fresno, and then on December 3, the Bulldogs will return the trip as the team s play in Long Beach. This setup marks the first time since the beginning of the conference play era that the 49ers have played the same non-conference team twice in the same season. The 49ers outdistanced Cal State Fullerton, which accumulated 164 points with six first-place votes, and third-place UC Irvine s 153 points and one first-place vote. The 21-member media panel tabbed new Big West member Hawaii for fourth place with 132 points, followed by UC Santa Barbara in fifth (129). Picking up the lone remaining first-place nod was Pacific, which tallied 113 points for sixth place in the poll. ENNIS NAMED TO PRESEASON ALL-BIG WEST TEAM: James Ennis was named to the preseason All-Big West Conference Team by the league s media. Ennis, the 49ers lone returning starter from the club that finished 25-9 overall, earned All-Big West Honorable Mention recognition last season after averaging 10.0 points, 4.1 rebounds and 2.6 assists per game. The 6-7 guard/forward also ranked No. 2 in the conference in steals (1.6 spg). In , Ennis has led the 49ers in scoring three-times, including a game-high 18 against No. 11 North Carolina, and is tops on the team in scoring average at 16.8 points per game, ranking 8th in the Big West CAFFEY WILL PILOT THE 49ERS: Sophomore guard Mike Caffey takes the reins of the 49er offense replacing twotime Big West Conference Player of the Year Casper Ware at point guard. As a true freshman, Caffey averaged 5.9 points and 2.2 assists in 21.8 minutes per game. The Riverside, Calif. product finished with a 1.76 assist-to-turnover ratio, handing out 76 assists while only turning the ball over 43 times in This season, Caffey leads the 49ers with nine assists and is averaging 13.3 points per game, second on the team. FINDING THE RANGE: Sophomore guard Kris Gulley shot over 50 percent in the first three games for Long Beach State, and is leading the team in shooting percentage while averaging 9.3 points per game. In , Gulley leads the team with ten 3-pointers, and is shooting 55.6 percent behind the arc, and 54.2 percent overall. 49ERS ALSO RETURN FOUR PLAYERS WITH DIVISION I EXPERIENCE AT LBSU: In addition to James Ennis and Mike Caffey, the 49ers also return two more lettermen off the team and two lettermen from the team who redshirted last year. Senior Peter Pappageorge and sophomore Nick Shepherd helped LBSU advance to the NCAA Tournament in 2012, while juniors Kyle Richardson and Jerramy King contributed to the 49ers 2011 NIT team. 49ERS WILL COUNT ON A HANDFUL OF DIVISION I TRANSFERS: While Long Beach State only returns six players with experience playing at the Division I level at LBSU, the 49ers can count on four other players who transferred to Long Beach from other Division I schools. Three of those players, Dan Jennings (West Virginia), Tony Freeland (DePaul) and Keala King (Arizona State) joined the 49er program after spending two years at Power Six Conference schools. The fourth, Edgar Garibay, played at Loyola Marymount. Jennings, who transferred to Long Beach State before last season and redshirted for the 49ers, is eligible to play when LBSU opens the season Saturday. The other three transferred midway through last season and will be eligible after the first semester. Freeland and King have appeals pending with the NCAA which if approved would allow them to play immediately. TALENTED GROUP OF REDSHIRTS NEWCOMERS ROUND OUT THE 49ERS ROSTER: Sophomore Kris Gulley headlines a group of redshirts and freshmen who should help Long Beach State during the season. Gulley, who transferred to LBSU before the season from a junior college in Kansas, is battling for playing time at the wing position opposite of James Ennis. He is joined in the backcourt by true freshmen Branford Jones (out 8-12 weeks with leg injury suffered in opener), Deng Deng and Javion Watson. While Watson is expected to redshirt, Deng should be a part of the 49er rotation. Jones was the 49ers back-up point guard before suffering a leg injury in the second half of the North Alabama game that will force him to miss at least 8-12 weeks. Redshirt freshman Gatete Djuma and true freshman Brian Smith add depth in the post for the 49ers. Smith is expected to redshirt. LAST TIME OUT #10 Arizona 94, LBSU 72: A slow start doomed the 49ers in a high-scoring game in Tucson, even while Long Beach State hit 14 3-pointers, led by Peter Pappageorge who hit four on the way to a career high 16 points. James Ennis scored 17 points off of the bench to lead the team and extend his double-figure scoring streak to nine straight games. Mike Caffey had a career high seven assists, and the 49ers had four players in double-figures, but Arizona nearly doubled the 49ers on the glass 41-23, and shot 53.6 percent to hold off the 49ers. BACK TO BACK GAMES AGAINST RANKED OPPONENTS: Having already played No. 11 North Carolina on Friday, Nov. 16 in Long Beach, the 49ers then played No. 10 Arizona in Tucson, on Nov. 19, giving the team back-to-back matches against ranked opponents. It is the first of two times the 49ers will likely play two straight ranked teams, looking forward for when LBSU travels to Syracuse and Ohio State, ranked No. 6 and No. 3 respectively this last week. Monday s game with Arizona marked the first time that Long Beach State has played two straight ranked foes since 2009, when the 49ers played at No. 3 Kentucky (12/23) and No. 7 Duke (12/29). Outside of the postseason, the 49ers have played back-to-back ranked opponents three times under Dan Monson and only once under any other coach. (Tex Winter; Jan 5-6, 1979) UNC JUST SIXTH RANKED TEAM TO VISIT WALTER PYRAMID: When No. 11 North Carolina came to Long Beach State on November 16, it was just the sixth time in the Pyramid s history that a ranked team has played in the building against LBSU (and the second in the Dan Monson era). The 49ers are looking for their first win over a ranked team in the Pyramid after losing the first five games and falling to the Tar Heels. UNC was the second-highest ranked team to play in the building behind only No. 4 Stanford in LBSU is 7-20 all-time against ranked teams at home. The 49ers are in all games against ranked teams, including 4-21 in the Monson era. Before getting hurt, Jones was impressive in his first collegiate game scoring eight points (4-of-7 shooting), grabbing three boards and handing out a team-high three assists in just 15 minutes of action. Long Beach State s other backup point guard, junior Jerramy King, missed the North Alabama game with a shoulder injury. 49ERS SECOND-LONGEST ACTIVE HOME WINNING STREAK SNAPPED: Long Beach State took a 23-game home winning streak into the North Carolina game on Friday, November 16, which was tied with Kansas and only behind Kentucky for the longest in the nation. However, the 49ers loss snapped that streak, which began in February of The 49ers finished the season with 12 straight wins after ending the season with 10 home wins in a row. The 49ers have also won 17 straight Big West home games dating back to a loss to Pacific on Feb. 17, ERS FACE ONE OF NATION S TOUGHEST NON-CONFERENCE SCHEDULES, INCLUDING GAMES AGAINST FIVE OF THE NATION S PRESEASON TOP 13 TEAMS: Long Beach State heads into the season with a non-league schedule that few teams can match. The 49ers will face No. 4 Ohio State, No. 9 Syracuse, No. 11 North Carolina, No. 12 Arizona and No. 13 UCLA. 7 Head Coach Dan Monson Long Beach State Basketball Dan Monson has rebuilt the Long Beach State basketball program in his five seasons with the 49ers. Monson has taken a program that won just six games in his first season at LBSU to back-to-back regular-season Big West Conference championships and an appearance in the 2012 NCAA Tournament. The 49ers have won 47 games over the last two seasons, with two victories over nationally-ranked teams. The 47 wins have come despite Monson s 49ers playing the nation s toughest ranked non-conference schedule each of the last three seasons. His success has been rewarded the last two seasons with consecutive Big West Conference Coach of the Year honors, as well as back-to-back National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) All-District 9 Coach recognition. The two Big West Conference Coach of the Year honors mark the second and third time Monson has been recognized as a league s top coach during his successful career. He was named the West Coast Conference Coach of the Year in 1998 after his first season as a head coach at Gonzaga. Monson has built the 49er program around a solid nucleus of players he recruited to play at LBSU. His first recruiting class featured Greg Plater, the second-leading all-time 3-point shooter at the school, while his second recruiting class of Larry Anderson, Eugene Phelps, T.J. Robinson and Casper Ware may go down in school history as the best recruiting class of all-time at Long Beach State. DAN MONSON (Mun-son) Record at Long Beach State: Overall Record: Education University of Idaho Bachelor of Science-Mathematics University of Alabama-Birmingham Masters-Education Coaching Experience 2007-Present Long Beach State Head Coach Minnesota Head Coach Gonzaga Head Coach Gonzaga Associate Head Coach Gonzaga Assistant Coach Alabama-Birmingham Graduate Assistant Honors 1998 WCC Coach of the Year 2011 NABC All-District 9 Coach Big West Coach of the Year 2012 NABC All-District 9 Coach Big West Coach of the Year Anderson, Phelps, Robinson and Ware all rank among the all-time leaders in school history in at least two categories and all four have earned all-league honors at least twice. Three of the four own a school record. Ware is the school s all-time assist leader, Anderson has more steals than anybody in 49er history, and Robinson is not only the all-time leading rebounder at Long Beach State, but the leading rebounder in the history of the Big West Conference. Ware established himself as not only one of the top players in the conference, but one of the best players in the nation. Named a finalist for the Bob Cousy Award, honoring the top point guard in Division I, as both a junior and a senior, Ware won two Big West Conference Player of the Year awards and was named an honorable mention Associated Press All-American in 2011 and 2012, while also being named the U.S. Basketball Writers Association (USBWA) District IX Player of the Year as a senior. He ranks among Long Beach State s all-time leaders in six different categories and is seventh all-time in assists in the Big West. In addition to being the all-time leader in assists at LBSU, Ware is second all-time in steals and free throws made, third all-time in scoring, 3-point field goals made, and 3-point field goals attempted, and is sixth in field goals made. In , Ware became the first player in Big West history to be named both the league s player of the year and its defensive player of the year. His first-team all-league selection made him the third Monson recruit at LBSU to be named first-team all-league. Ware also was named first-team All-District 9 by the NABC and first-team All-District IX by the USBWA as both a junior and senior. Ware was joined on the All-Big West Conference First Team as a senior by two other 49ers. Anderson was named firstteam all-league for the third time during his four-year career, while Robinson claimed first-team accolades for the second time in his career. All five Long Beach State starters received all-league recognition in It marked the second time in as many years that all five 49er starters had been on the All-Big West Team. In addition to the three first-team representatives, Phelps claimed second-team All-Big West honors and James Ennis was named honorable mention all-league. In , Ware and Anderson were All-Big West Conference First-Team honorees, while Robinson, a first-team pick as a sophomore in , was named second-team All-Big West as a junior. Plater and Phelps garnered honorable mention all-conference honors to put all five starters on the all-league team. Monson s 25 wins in , the second most in LBSU history, gave him back-to-back 20-win seasons at Long Beach State. He is the first 49er coach to win 20 games in consecutive seasons since Jerry Tarkanian did it during the and seasons. The 49ers hadn t won 20 games two seasons in a row since they did it in under Tarkanian and in in Lute Olson s one season as a 49er. Monson s team also picked up two wins over nationally-ranked teams in , handing No. 9 Pittsburgh an defeat on the road before knocking off No. 14 Xavier at the Diamond Head Classic in Honolulu. The two wins over ranked teams marked the first time a LBSU team had beaten multiple top 25 teams since the season. Monson notched his 250th career win during the season, on the same night LBSU clinched its second consecutive Big West Conference title, when the 49ers beat UC Santa Barbara on Feb. 22. Monson s success during the last two seasons came after his team nearly broke through in After finishing the season tied for third place in the Big West, the 49ers jelled in the Big West Tournament and advanced to the title game, just missing a berth in the NCAA Tournament after a five-point loss in the championship. During the season, Monson led LBSU through the toughest schedule in school history and in the process picked up his 200th career win at Cal State Northridge on Jan. 28, The 49ers faced five teams ranked in the top 25, including the eventual National Champions, Duke, and a Final Four team, West Virginia. Monson also led the 49ers to their first win ever over national-power UCLA and a win over eventual WAC champion Utah State. Long Beach State played eight teams that eventually advanced to the NCAA Tournament.

8 Head Coach Dan Monson Monson pushed a young team that featured four sophomore starters to the title game of the league tournament. Robinson, a sophomore, earned first-team All-Big West Conference honors and was a member of the Big West All-Tournament Team. He also became the first player from a mid-major to be named to the 76 Classic All-Tournament Team. Fellow sophomore Ware was named second-team all-league and earned Big West All-Tournament accolades as did Anderson, also a sophomore. Monson s team became the first team in Big West Conference history to have five different players earn Big West Conference Player of the Week honors in the same season when Robinson, Ware, Anderson, Phelps, another sophomore, and senior Stephan Gilling claimed the award. During his second season at the helm of the Long Beach State program in , Monson may have done the best coaching job of his career. Picked eighth in the Preseason Big West Conference Coaches Poll after finishing his first season at LBSU 6-25, Monson led a team with four true freshmen in the regular rotation, including three freshmen starters at the end of the season, to a nine-win improvement with a record and a second-place finish in the Big West Conference. All this despite losing Donovan Morris, an All-Big West selection after Monson s first season, for a big portion of the conference schedule. Anderson became the first freshman to be named first-team All-Big West since LBSU s Clifton Pondexter earned the honor following the season. Anderson also became just the third 49er to be named Big West Freshman of the Year joining Lucious Harris (1990) and James Cotton (1994). Robinson and Ware joined Anderson on the five-player Big West All-Freshman Team to mark the second time three 49ers made the all-freshman team in the same season. Monson was tabbed as the 16th head coach in Long Beach State men s basketball history on April 7, He inherited a depleted roster but still managed to be competitive in his first season at LBSU. Monson has been a Division I head coach for 16 years, during which he has compiled a career record of (.560), with nine trips to postseason play, including a trip to the Elite Eight in 1999 with Gonzaga University. Monson was the head coach at the University of Minnesota for seven-plus years, compiling a mark and reaching postseason play in five of his seven seasons. In he led the Gophers to a memorable year. He engineered the secondbest Big Ten turnaround in the previous 20 seasons, finishing with a 10-6 conference mark after posting just three league wins the previous campaign. Minnesota reached the 20-win plateau for the first time since and Monson led the Golden Gophers to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since In the Gophers advanced to their fifth postseason appearance in six years. Senior guard Vincent Grier was named All-Big Ten and All-District for the second straight year. In Minnesota went and earned the program s first trip to the NIT semifinals in Madison Square Garden. Monson reached two personal coaching milestones in With a victory over Indiana in the Big Ten Tournament quarterfinals, he earned his 100th victory at Minnesota. When he defeated Purdue on February 26, 2005 he picked up his 150th career head-coaching victory. With 100 victories in his first six years at Minnesota, Monson ranks second all-time at the school behind Jim Dutcher ( ) in wins during his first six years as head coach. Monson stepped into the Minnesota job on the heels of NCAA sanctions against the school. Those NCAA violations during the mid-1990 s severely limited scholarships and put strict recruiting sanctions on the program since the summer of 1999, coinciding with Monson s arrival at Minnesota. The summer of 2005 was the first Monson and his staff could recruit on par with every other college basketball program and that season concluded with a trip to the NCAA Tournament, the program s first year off probation. Prior to accepting the Minnesota job on July 24, 1999, Monson was the head coach at Gonzaga for two years. In he led the Bulldogs to within a breath of the Final Four. Gonzaga, which went 28-7 on the year and won the West Coast Conference regular season and tournament championships, defeated such notable NCAA powers as Minnesota (75-63), Stanford (82-74) and Florida (73-72) before bowing out to eventual national-champion Connecticut (67-62) in the Elite Eight. His first year as head coach at Gonzaga resulted in a mark, as the Bulldogs advanced to the second round of the NIT. Monson had a sparkling (.754) record in his two seasons as the head coach of the Bulldogs. Monson spent 11 years helping build the Gonzaga program. He began at GU as an assistant coach in 1988 and spent six years laying the groundwork. In he was elevated to associate head coach under head coach Dan Fitzgerald. Three years later he took over full control of the Gonzaga program. He led Gonzaga to a West Coast Conference title in 1998 and was named the WCC Coach of the Year. The squad set a school-record with its 24 wins and Monson was also named the National Rookie Coach of the Year by Basketball Times. Monson was a key figure in the Bulldogs turnaround in the 1990 s. Gonzaga had a record of over 10 seasons and he was responsible for recruiting many of the key players in Gonzaga s NCAA Sweet 16 appearances from From the time Monson was named associate head coach in 1995, Gonzaga averaged 22 wins per season and reached postseason play every year but one. Prior to joining the Bulldogs staff, Monson spent two seasons as a graduate assistant coach under Gene Bartow at the University of Alabama-Birmingham. Monson played one year of football at Idaho, but turned his attention to coaching when a knee injury cut short his gridiron career. He coached the boys basketball team at Oregon City (Ore.) High School for one year prior to taking the UAB graduate assistant post. A 1985 graduate of the University of Idaho with a bachelor degree in mathematics, Monson earned his master s degree in education with a concentration on athletic administration from UAB in DAN MONSON AS HEAD COACH Season School Record Postseason Long Beach State Long Beach State Long Beach State NIT 1st Round Long Beach State Long Beach State Long Beach State Minnesota Minnesota NIT 2nd Round Minnesota NCAA 1st Round Minnesota Minnesota NIT Final Four Minnesota NIT 2nd Round Minnesota NIT 2nd Round Minnesota Gonzaga (WCC Champions) 28-7 NCAA Elite Gonzaga NIT 2nd Round Totals Career In addition to his 20-plus seasons coaching Division I basketball, as either a head or assistant coach, Monson has served on two coaching staffs for USA Basketball representing the United States in international competition. Monson gained valuable experience by coaching on the international level with USA Basketball. He was an assistant coach for Kelvin Sampson on the gold medal winning 20-and-Under World Championships for Young Men Qualifying Tournament squad in the summer of 2004 in Halifax, Nova Scotia. He also assisted Oliver Purnell at the 1999 Men s World University Games in Mallorca, Spain where the U.S. won the gold medal. With Team USA, Monson had the opportunity to coach future NBA players Sean May, Brendan Haywood, Bracey Wright, Chris Paul, Michael Redd, Mark Madsen, Kenyon Martin and Charlie Villanueva. Monson grew up around basketball as his father, Don, was a well-respected collegiate coach. Don was the head coach at Idaho and Oregon and was an assistant coach under Jud Heathcote at Michigan State ( ) for two years. Monson and his wife Darci have four children, a son, MicGuire (12), a daughter, Mollie (10), a son, Maddox (9) and a daughter, McKenna (7).
