Though UNLV s seed has been set for next week s MW Championships, that in no way dampers the importance of Friday s contest against Nevada, Reno. First, its Senior Night, and the Lady Rebel seniors (Amanda Anderson, Mia Bell, Rmanii Haynes, Friederike Moderegger) would love to finish their last game in the Cox Pavilion with a win over their in-state rivals. Friday s game is the second of two games between the two this season in the Governor s Series, which is presented by NV Energy, an all-sports competition between the two schools. UNLV won the initial series last season, and the Lady Rebels would earn three points on Friday with a victory for a sweep. A win by UNR would tie the series at 1-1, and each school would then receive 1.5 points in the standings, unless there was a deciding rubber match in next week s league tournament. UNLV currently leads the overall standings this year by a 12-6 score. The Lady Rebels are also looking for their eighth straight win over their rival from the north. Head coach Kathy Olivier, a former UNLV All-American, is a perfect 7-0 against the Wolf Pack, including a season sweep last season in UNR s first year in the Mountain West. UNLV has never lost to the Wolf Pack in, having won all previous 14 meetings. 2 HEAD COACH KATHY OLIVIER When UNLV was searching for its next women s basketball coach -- a person that could return the proud program to its place among the nation s best -- it didn t have to look far. The school turned to one of its own by hiring former Lady Rebel All-American Kathy Olivier as the eighth full-time head coach in UNLV women s basketball history on April 22, The Lady Rebels immediately showed their renewed enthusiasm for their new coach, and the team was the talk of the conference after an inspiring run to the Mountain West Conference Tournament semifinals as the seven seed. Olivier s first recruit to the program, Jamie Smith, signed exactly one month after she was hired, would 10 months later became the first ever Lady Rebel to be named MWC Freshman of the Year. In the Lady Rebels continued their climb back to prominence under Olivier, and posted several impressive upsets, including road wins at Utah and New Mexico and a home victory over eventual Sweet 16 participant San Diego State. Olivier s best season would come in , as UNLV finished the campaign with a record, an 11-win improvement over the previous year that ranked as the sixth best in the nation, and the Lady Rebels returned to the postseason for the first time since with a trip to the WNIT. In her most recent season, Olivier was able to guide the team from a rough non-conference going to an 8-8 record in Mountain West play, good enough to earn the fourth seed in the conference tournament. Olivier came to UNLV after serving as head coach at UCLA for 15 years (from May 3, 1993, to March 11, 2008). While head coach of the Bruins she helped produce two Pac-10 Players of the Year, three Pac-10 Freshmen of the Year, a Pac-10 team championship, a Pac-10 Tournament Championship and a trip to the 1999 Elite Eight. The former Kathy Ricks, Olivier was a standout player at Cal State Fullerton and then at UNLV, where she earned All-America honors while averaging a team-high 16.3 points and 5.7 rebounds in the season. She still ranks on several all-time lists at UNLV, as her career 18.1 ppg average is the second-highest in team history. The Lady Rebels might be the deepest team in the Mountain West, with a normal game 10-player rotation, while seven players on the team have started in at least six games this season. The top two scorers this year both hail from the junior class, forward Alana Cesarz (14.1 ppg) and wing Danielle Miller (12.2 ppg). Cesarz is shooting 43.5% from the floor, while Miller is one of the top defenders in the league with 49 steals. Senior point guard Mia Bell, a native, is the third player in double-figures with 11.8 ppg, and has started all 26 games she has dressed out for. She leads the team in assists with 3.7 pg, and is among the league leaders in steals (1.7 spg) and three-point shooting (49-of-119, 41.2%) Post players Réjane Vérin (seven starts) and Aley Rohde (20 starts) are posting 8.1 and 6.6 ppg, respectively. Rohde has a team-high three double-doubles for UNLV, while Vérin has one. In league games, Rohde is currently eighth in rebounds and sixth in blocks. As a team, UNLV currently is first in the Mountain West in three-point percentage at 35.6%, which ranks 48th in the nation as well. The Lady Rebels are also third in the conference in steals per game at 9.3, first in league games at 10.1 spg. LAST TIME OUT... Despite an amazing shooting performance from UNLV senior point guard Mia Bell who scored a season-high 25 points including a go-ahead three-pointer with 55 seconds left, the Lady Rebels left Viejas Arena with a heartbreaking loss after four points from San Diego State in the final 28 seconds led to a Aztec victory on Tuesday night. It was a game that featured big runs by each team all game long. San Diego State made five of its first six shots to open up a 10-5 edge. UNLV responded with a 13-2 spurt, the final five points from Bell putting the Lady Rebels ahead at the 11:14 mark. UNLV built its largest lead of the game, off a three-pointer from Rmanii Haynes, at the 6:58 mark. In what was one of the keys that decided the game, that basket by Haynes was the last one of the first half for UNLV, who would miss its final six shots while turning the ball over twice. San Diego State took advantage of the drought, reeling off the final 16 points of the half to take a lead into the break. Though UNLV made a few runs in the opening part of the second half, after scoring the first six out of the break it came no closer then six points over the first 10 minutes. After Cierra Warren scored six straight for the Aztecs, it looked like the home team was in control, thanks to a layup and two free throws following a technical foul that made the score with 10:56 to play. Bell had different ideas however, as she sandwiched a pair of treys around a banked in three-pointer from

Bell kept it up from downtown, hitting two more, the second of which completed a 17-2 run that put the Lady Rebels ahead at the 6:22 mark. SDSU answered with four straight from Danesha Long, while Danielle Miller added a free throw for UNLV, cutting the SDSU lead to at the 4:24 mark. Both teams then clamped down on defense, as the game was scoreless for the next 2:33. Warren broke the drought by going one-of-two at the line with 1:51 to play, giving the hosts a edge. UNLV missed its next shot but forced a turnover, and on the next possession, Bell drained a NBA range trey form the top of the key with 55 seconds to go, putting the Lady Rebels up Needing one stop, UNLV forced SDSU late into the shot clock, but Deajanae Scurry would turn the corner from the right side and got to the basket, laying the ball in with 28 seconds to go for a lead. UNLV missed a jumper on the other end, and was forced to foul. Khristina Hunter made both free throws at the line with five seconds to go for a lead. Following a foul, UNLV inbounded the ball at midcourt with three seconds left, and got a long three-point try from Bell that was just off the mark. Amie Callaway grabbed the rebound and quickly laid it in but then the horn sounded, ending the game at in favor of the Aztecs. In addition to the scoring drought at the end of the first half, the other key in the loss for UNLV was the Aztecs free throw shooting. SDSU came into the night second-to-last in the league in free throw percentage at 63.4%, but would make 21-of-27 for 77.8%. UNLV meanwhile was limited to just eight total free throw attempts (5-of-8). Bell finished the game hitting 9-of-13, including a career-high 6-of-9 from three-point range, for her game-high 25 points. Alana Cesarz was the other Lady Rebel in double-figures with 16. UNLV shot 42.9% (24-of-56) for the game, was 10-of-22 from three-point range for 45.5%, and 5-of-8 at the line for 62.5%. The Lady Rebels were outrebounded by a margin, leading to a edge on second chance points for SDSU. UNLV made up for that by coming up with 10 steals and forcing 19 turnovers, leading to a advantage on points off turnovers. Warren paced the Aztecs with 17 on her Senior Night, while Hunter chipped in 11 and Deidra Smith 10. SDSU shot 40% (20-of-50) for the game, and was 3-of-7 from three-point range for 42.9%. RECORD-MARGIN VICTORY... The 44-point victory by UNLV over Air Force on March 1 was the most-ever by the Lady Rebels in a Mountain West game, topping an win at San Diego State on Jan. 27, It also marked the first time since that SDSU game that UNLV had doubled up on a MW opponent s score. In overall games, it s the largest win margin since a win over Columbia in Honolulu, Hawaii on Dec. 29, RACKING UP THE STEALS... One of the strengths of this year s Lady Rebel squad is their ability to come up with steals, and that was on display once again in the win over Air Force. UNLV finished the game with 22 total steals, tied for the second most ever in a MW game (along with UNLV s 22-steal performance against Wyoming on March 4, 2000). It matches the third-most ever by a MW team in overall games, and also tied for the fifth best mark in team history. Currently UNLV has 171 steals for the conference season with one game left to play in the regular season. That ranks them fifth all-time in conference history, and just six from tying for third place. Last year s Fresno State squad holds both the conference (198) and overall (426) record. LADY REBELS SWEEP COUNT UP TO TWO... Air Force became the second conference school to be swept by the Lady Rebels this season, following Saturday s loss and a win in Colorado Springs on Jan. 4. The other sweep victim this season has been Utah State. UNLV also went 1-0 against San Jose State in the lone regular season meeting between the two schools. Last year UNLV recorded a total of three sweeps in conference play, over Boise State, Nevada, Reno and New Mexico. LADY REBELS TAKE EARLY LEAD IN GOVERNOR S SERIES... Thanks to their win at Nevada, Reno on Jan. 8, their seventh straight t over their in-state rivals from the north, the Lady Rebels took an early lead in the Governor s Series (sponsored by NV Energy) the all-sports competition between the two schools. If UNLV sweeps the season series, it gets all three points assigned to women s basketball, while a split would result in 1.5 points for each school. Last year the Lady Rebels used a sweep to earn three points to help the school win the trophy in its inaugural year, this year UNLV currently holds an overall 12-6 lead.
