19 Cavalier Football Weekly By Chris Cron Football Statistician 2009 Issue 2 September 6, 2009 Too Much For The Young Raiders s longest road trip for the 2009 regular season was a pleasant one as the Cavaliers had little trouble with the Benjamin Logan Raiders winning 4-7. Senior signal caller Keith Wenning led the Cavs once again this week going 4 of 8 for 232 yards and three touchdowns. He added a fourth score on a yard plunge. His passes were spread between six receivers including Colin Paynter (5-32), Kurt Schoenherr (3-36) and Andre Feltz (2-4). Kurt Westerheide led all rushers on the evening netting 44 yards on just three carries and Ross Wermert provided the short yardage scoring 2 touchdowns on 4 rushes for nine total yards. The Cavalier defense had a good evening as they held the Raider offense led by QB Dustin Bowers to just yards of total offense in the first half and 80 total yards for the night. The defensive pressure also forced seven Raider fumbles, two of which the Cavs recovered. The Raiders were definitely outmatched in this contest but give them credit as they fought hard for all four quarters. Bowers was helped off the field early in the first quarter after a shot to his knee and on the next series was doubled over backwards when he was sacked in the Raider backfield. But give the youngster credit. He as valiant in leading his charges against the superior talent from. In their last five meetings the Redskins have only scored 3 touchdowns. The Cavaliers lead the series including last seasons 34-7 win. St. Henry struggle more though as they could only muster 92 yards of total offense on the night against a stingy Cavalier D who only allowed one yard of rushing to the Redskins. He added another 79 yards on the ground to lead all rushers. Aaron Rammel had 3 yard rushing and along with Reese Klenke had 49 yards receiving. 37 Cavalier Football Weekly By Chris Cron Football Statistician 2009 Issue 8 October 9, 2009 Turnovers And A Gadget Play Costly To Cavaliers The tables were turned on the Cavaliers Friday night as costly turnovers and a gadget play sparked the Delphos St. John Blue Jays to a victory. On paper the final statistics would lead one to believe that won the game. After all, the Cavs who have averaged 2.5 turnovers per game, always seem to negate the impact of those miscues. Not this week and not against the defending D6 state champs. Delphos jump to a 6-0 first quarter lead on a 38 yard pass play but a Keith Wenning to Ross Wermert 5 yard pass early in the second gave a 7-6 lead. On the ensuing kickoff Jordan Bergfeld returned the kick 69 yards into territory and 2 minutes later Delphos scored again for a 4-7 lead. answered again late in the second as Wenning hooked up with Resse Klenke on a 6 yard toss to make the score 4-3 as Troy Otten missed the PAT. But Delphos was again quick to respond as less that a minute later they scored on a 4 yard pass play to make the score 20-3 at halftime. In the second half 's defense shut down the powerful Delphos offense. After allowing 99 yards rushing it the first half, they stopped the Jays with only 59 yards. Meanwhile the Cavalier offense posted the only score of the third quarter as Wenning rambled for 8 yards to tie the score at heading into the final quarter. For most of the final stanza It appeared as if this classic MAC battle would require more than four quarters to decide. had a chance to score late in the quarter as they drove to the Delphos 35 yard line where they faced a forth and five. After calling a timeout the Cavs went to a play that had worked all night. On seven previous attempts, Wenning had found Klenke over the middle just behind the line backers for 34 yards but this time a Delphos linebacker reached high and knocked the ball down to end the threat with :57 to play. From there the Jays ran 8 plays to reach the Cavalier 28 with 9 seconds to play. After a timeout the Jays ran what appeared to be a sweep around the right side by Jordan Leininger, but he suddenly pulled up and tossed a pass to a wide open Tanner Calvelage for the winning touchdown. The Cavaliers ran one more play but their attempted at a hookand-lateral was snuffed out by the Jays along with dreams of a 7th MAC title in the last nine seasons. The win gave Delphos sole possession of first place in the MAC with a 6-0 mark. falls to a second place tie with Anna at 5- The loss also snapped a couple of pretty nice steaks for who had won 2 straight MAC and 25 straight regular season games. and Anna will need help from either St. Henry or For complete game stats, photos and video checkout CavFootball.com Delphos if they hope to catch a piece of first place. 40 Cavalier Football Weekly By Chris Cron Football Statistician 2009 Issue 9 October 25, 2009 Cavaliers Rebound to Defeat Minster 35-0 The offensive got off to a slow start but not so the Cavalier defense. For the second time in three games the defense posted a goose egg on the opponents side of the scoreboard and rebounded from last weeks defeat by a score of The Minster Wildcats were the victims this time as they could only manage 60 yards in 6 plays. Ten of Minster's first eleven possession were three and out. The other possession ended with a Ross Wermert interception. The majority of Minster s yards came on their last possession of the game which consumed the final seven and a half minutes and covered over fifty yards. That drive ended on the three yard line as time expired. It should be noted that the Wildcats started a freshman at quarterback and many of the young men who started the season were no longer on the team having violated team rules a few weeks ago during Minster s Homecoming festivities. (their teammates deserved better) The offense appeared to have taken a less than enthusiastic approach to playing an outmanned opponent as they were unable to move the ball very well in the first quarter. So poor was their performance that halfway through the quarter Coach Reed pulled the first-team offense and sent in the JVs. That move ignited the Cavaliers as they erupted for five touchdowns in the next 2 minutes. Jacob Pohl got it started with a 9 yard run as time expired in the first quarter. Three minutes later, Keith Wenning hooked up with Adam Rammel for a 4 yard score. 89 seconds later, following Wermert s interception, Wenning tossed a 25 yarder to Reese Klenke to make the score 2-0. closed out the second quarter with Wenning running 8 yards for a score and hitting Rammel for another pass; 7 yards, to close out the scoring for the evening. The second half saw the JVs get some playing time under the lights. Young Drew Klosterman led the rushing attack with 34 yard on 7 carries. Wenning totaled 30 yards, Brady Otten had 2 and Kurt Westerheide netted 20 yards. Wenning finished the evening with 3 touchdown passes while completing 9 of his 29 passes for 225 yards. The victory was the 6th straight for over Minster and they have outscored the Cats 43-0 the past three seasons. It could well be a few years before these teams meet again as the MAC will re-align their schedules next season and at present would drop Minster and pickup Ft. Recovery. Next week will close out the regular season with a visit to New Bremen to play the 5-4 Cardinals. The Cavaliers have clinched a spot in the Division 5 playoffs and will have to guard against looking ahead. The Cardinals have played some good football this season. has won the last meeting and 6 of the last 7. 47 Cavalier Football Weekly By Chris Cron Football Statistician 2009 Issue November 9, 2009 Cavaliers Defeat Outmanned Hamilton Badin The Cavaliers began their 2009 playoff quest as they dominated the Rams of Hamilton Badin 4-0 at Cavalier Stadium. The victory moves to 0- on the season and sets up a rematch with MAC foe Anna who came from behind to defeat Bishop Ready This is the tenth straight season that has had at least 0 victories. The victories by and Anna were part of a clean sweep by the five MAC teams involved in this seasons playoffs as St. Henry, St. John and Marion Local also won their matchups. Hamilton Badin came to small in numbers (there were 42 names on their roster though only about 30 appeared on the sidelines) but with some nice sized and athletic players. It was obvious from the get-to that had the better football team though. The Cavalier offense get most of the headlines but it was the defense that shown in this game. The D allowed a total of 74 yards, negative rushing and 85 passing yards, picked off two passes and forced seven punts. Badin quarterback Patrick Coyne was hounded all night by the front four. He was sacked five times and rushed for negative 48 yards. The Rams ran a total of 47 plays for 74 yards - or.6 yards per play. Meanwhile the offense lead by Ball State bound Keith Wenning was firing on all cylinders. 7 runners combined for 90 yards and passes were caught by nine receivers for 35 yards for a total of 505 yards of total offense. It was the most productive yardage night of the season. Wenning led all rushers with 82 including a 58 yard draw play where the Badin safety was completing missing from his position. Ross Wermert added 47 yards and Aaron Rammel added 33 more. Wenning was also 20 of 27 passing for 285 yards and 5 touchdowns. Seven receivers totaled at least 0 yards with Reese Klenke netting 63 yards along with Adam Rammel 53 and Ross Wermert 35 yards. Kurt Schoenherr led all receivers with 4 yards on just 4 catches. It was Kurt s first game in four weeks as he had missed the last three games of the regular season due to illness. The offense got off to a fast start again as they scored 34 points in the first half and then let the reserves bring home the victory. Reese Klenke caught two touchdown passes of 27 and 7 yards. Ross Wermert had a 35 yard catch, Kurt Westerheide for 5, Andrew Feltz for 5 and Adam Rammel had a 5 yard pitch to round out the scoring. The victory moves s play off record to 34-2 overall and 3-2 in week. The Cavs have never lost in week at home (9-0). Next up for is Anna in a game to be played at Wapak In week 5 Anna visited Cavalier Stadium and the Cavs prevailed In that game both teams compiled 324 yards of total offense. did it 42 plays but Anna required 63 plays. This stat is indicative of the contrasting styles between the Cavs and Rockets. is a big play quick strike team and Anna is more adept at grinding it out on the ground and throwing in some medium range passes. 51 Cavalier Football Weekly By Chris Cron Football Statistician 2009 Issue 2 November 6, 2009 Cavaliers Shoot Down Rockets in Overtime Thriller Around the state of Ohio the MAC has earned the reputation of being tough competitors in the playoffs because of the seasoning they get during the regular season. So what happens when two of the top three MAC teams in 2009 meet in week two of the playoffs? In what could prove to be the most exciting, heart stopping, gut wrenching game in this season s Region 20 playoffs, the Cavaliers scratched and clawed their way to a 28-2 overtime victory over the Anna Rockets in one of the regional semi-finals. Could be because next up for the Cavaliers is league foe and next door neighbor St. Henry. The Redskins knocked out undefeated West Liberty Salem 42-4 to advance to the championship game of Region 20 against. But more about that on page two. For, this game probably ranks up there with Alter and Mooney in The Cavs required three overtimes to beat Alter in the regional semifinal and blocked a game tying point after touchdown in the waning moments of the Division IV championship to defeat Mooney. Those games were termed upsets because on paper was not considered the superior team. But this season s second meeting between and Anna found two equally matched teams who slugged it out for four quarters and still needed an overtime session to determine a winner. Keith Wenning provided leadership for the Cavaliers as he ran for two touchdowns and caught a pass for another. The first half saw both teams trade touchdowns as Wenning scored from 8 yards out followed by Anna scoring on a pass to close the first quarter. In the second quarter Wenning again scored from 5 yards out and Anna responded with another touchdown pass. But what proved to be the game changer occurred on the ensuing kickoff as Aaron Rammel received the ball on the six yard line, moved to the center of the field, found a crack and busted it to the right sidelines. Ninety four yards later the Cavaliers were back on top 2-4, a lead they took to the locker room at halftime. The second half was a defensive struggle. The Rockets did manage to score on a one yard plunge with 8:28 left in the third. The rest of the half saw both teams threaten but the defenses stiffened and the stage was set for an exciting overtime. Anna won the toss and choose to be on defense first. On second and 3 did what they do in situations like this, they went off the script. Wenning threw a lateral pass to Sophomore Drew Klosterman who glanced down field and then look back to Wenning and threw the ball to him. Wenning followed four of his mates untouched into the end zone. The PAT kick set the score at Anna then became the victim of a fired up Cavalier D as they stuff a sweep for minus 0, defended an incomplete pass and Kurt Westerheide sacked the quarterback for another six yard loss. Then on fourth and 26, Adam Rammel knocked the final pass to the turf and the celebration began. Coach Reed put it best when in the post game interviews he said, "I just want to say that Anna didn't deserve to lose the game. They played like winners. That was a great high school football game. The MAC went 5- and the two left standing are MAC teams. It s & St. Henry in Region 20 Final Prior to last weeks Anna game Coach Reed was asked how he felt about facing a MAC opponent in the playoffs. He said, You d much rather be playing somebody that s not familiar with who you are and what you do. I don t know if in football that s such a great thing to do; play someone twice. Well, for the second time this season and for the second game in a row, will face a MAC foe in the state football playoffs. This time it s St. Henry. St. Henry was nagged by injuries in the second half the regular season and lost three of their last five games. But they are healthier now and in the last two weeks have knocked out two undefeated teams in North Union and West Liberty Salem and stand at 9-3. s only blemish was to league champ St. Johns and they sport an - record. Although Anna may be a stronger team, St. Henry has something that Anna lacks, substantial history and playoff experience. Anna s seniors have seen just 3 playoff games. St. Henry s veterans have participated in seven playoff games. They won it all in in 2006 and are 2-0 so far this season. Take that experience, add the tradition of St. Henry football and their success in the last three weeks and the Redskins will provide a formidable challenge to the Cavaliers. So in many ways the Redskins are just where they need to be as they face for a regional championship. But, has some experience and history too. Since 2006 is 0-2 in the playoffs and also owns a state title. The Cavs have defeated St. Henry each season for 3 straight years and stand all time against the Skins. The 3 year draught could prove to be the highest mountain for St. Henry. 55 Cavalier Football Weekly By Chris Cron Football Statistician 2009 Issue 2 November 23, 2009 Cavaliers Prevail In Yet Another Classic Matchup For the second week in a row, the Cavaliers met a fellow MAC team, the St Henry Redskins, on the turf at Harmon Stadium in Wapak and once again four quarter were not enough to settle the issue at hand. When the black dust of the Field Turf cleared the two teams were battle worn and weary and the Cavaliers prevailed 47-4 after four overtime sessions. now stands 2- on the season and advances to the state semifinals versus Patrick Henry (3-0) next Friday in Findlay. St. Henry retires at 9-4. The Cavaliers are 8- in overtime games four of which have been against St. Henry who defeated in a 996 overtime game. Coincidently that is the last time St. Henry defeated who extended their win streak over the Skins to 4 games in 3 years. put their first touchdown on the board just five minutes into the game when Reese Klenke caught an yard Keith Wenning pass. St. Henry then took control of the game as they scored twice in the second period and took a 4-7 lead at halftime. The St. Henry defense controlled the game from the middle of the first quarter and when the offense scored again late in the third to set the score at 2-7, there did not seem to be enough time for the Cavaliers to crawl back into it. But one needs to remember 2007 when the Cavaliers were down to Kettering Alter by 2 points TWICE and won in 5 overtimes. Also they were down 4-0 at half time to Cardinal Mooney in the state final and surprised the redbirds and captured a one point victory on a blocked PAT. Keith Wenning remembers and he woke up the echoes and lead the Cavs to victory. Wenning hooked up again with Klenke on a 6 yard pass to pull within a touchdown at 4-7. But St. Henry loosed their grip ever so slightly and pushed across the tying score with :55 seconds remaining to play as Wenning pushed his way in from the yard line. The teams traded touchdowns in the first over time but both missed their extra points and the score stood at Both teams scored again in the second and third OTs. St. Henry drove to a fourth and goal in the fourth overtime and elected to kick a field goal which missed the mark. Wenning then ran the ball once for 9 yards and the QB sneak from the one capped off another exciting playoff victory. The game was as close on paper as it was on the scoreboard. St. Henry racked up 406 yards and 40. Turnovers did not directly decide the game, but St. Henry lost 2 fumbles and threw one interception. did not turn the ball over at all. Wenning lead all rushers with 32 yards on 32 carries and four touchdowns. He completed 23 of 35 passes for 25 yards and 3 touchdowns. Reese Klenke rebounded from a MCL strain last week to catch 7 passes for 2 yards and 2 scores. Adam Rammel caught 5 passes for 68 yard and another score. So for the second week in a row has prevailed in an overtime matchup with an MAC foe. Will the battle scares prove too much to overcome as they face undefeated Patrick Henry? 59 Cavalier Football Weekly By Chris Cron Football Statistician 2009 Issue 4 November 30, 2009 We re Going To Canton! Cavs Advance to D5 Final The Cavaliers advanced to the Division 5 State Championship game on the strength of a victory over the Patriots of Patrick Henry. As the final minute expired off the fourth quarter clock the stands began the traditional refrain heard all around the west side of the state of Ohio at this time of year; M-A-C, M-A-C, M-A-C, M-A-C! Also, Delphos St. John defeated Marion Local to advance to the Division 6 State Championship game as well. So the MAC chant will be heard in Stark County one again. This was the first ever meeting between the and PH and the fifth time PH has met an MAC school. They have yet to defeat an MAC team. After two difficult over time games to Anna and St. Henry many wondered if the Cavaliers had any gas left to face the AP # Patriots. The defenses controlled most of the first half but both teams capitalized on turnovers to start the scoring. With just under three minutes remaining in the first quarter s Keith Wenning hit is favorite target of late, Reese Klenke with an yard strike to give the Cavs a 7-0 lead. Patrick Henry responded less than 3 minutes later as Luke George dove in from 2 yards to knot the score at 7-7. The teams battled the rest of the quarter, but Patrick Henry was able to use up the last 6 minutes of the second quarter to drive 6 yards in 5 plays and kick a 25 yard field goal to take a 0-7 lead going into the half time break. In the Anna and St. Henry games was rather sluggish during the first three quarters. But this team, which has played in 2 playoff games in the past three seasons, know how to kick it in when the have to. This week they did not wait until the fourth quarter (or overtime) to assert themselves and take control of the game. This time they started on the first play of the second half as Wenning found Klenke on a 46 yard pass over the middle to move the ball to the Patriots 27 hard line. On the next play Wenning hit Adam Rammel with a 27 yard pass to give the Cavs the lead. Later Aaron Rammel scored from the 2 to make the score 2-0 after three quarters. On the first play of the final quarter Wenning found Kurt Schoenheer on the right side and after a nifty move Kurt outran Luke George for a 47 yard score. Kurt caught another pass on s next possession this time for a 30 yard score. Patrick Henry responded to both of those touchdowns with scores of their own, but they were just playing catch up. Final score 35 Patrick Henry 24. Wenning has another big night going 26 of 35 for 325 yards and four touchdowns. Klenke caught 6 balls for 08 yards, Schoenherr snagged five for 93 yards and Adam Rammel added another 84 yards on 9 receptions. Of Wenning Patrick Henry coach Bill Inselmann said, That Wenning, he s a load. With great players who make great plays, you re going to win. The Cavalier defense contained Northwest District co-player of the year Justin Buenger allowing him to rush for only 23 yards. He and been averaging over 00 yards per game. Luke George was the standout performer for PH. He rushed for yards and added another 88 through the air. 63 Cavalier Football Weekly By Chris Cron Football Statistician 2009 Issue 5 August 5, 200 Special Edition: 2009 Wrap Up Now that we have had a few days to recover from a disappointing trip to Canton which saw the Cavaliers run into a buzz saw called Youngstown Ursuline, we decided to take a few moments and look back on what has been a fantastic football season at. First, despite the final score there were a few good things that happened at Canton. Quarterback Keith Wenning 44 passing yards ranks fifth all time in all divisions for a championship game. With 3636 total yards, Keith ranks 7th all time in Ohio for passing yards in a season and his 40 touchdown passes puts him in a tie for 3th plays in the TDs per season list. Adam Rammel caught 4 passes which places him first among all receivers in Division V for receptions in a championship game. And the 80 points scored by and Ursuline now ranks first all time for a Division V championship game. Looking back at a entire season that saw 820 teams compete in football only 2 teams finished with 3 or more wins including Soon a State Finalist banner will be hung in The Palace, it will be s 49th such banner. The 8 members of the Class of 200 are among s finest. In four years they compiled a record of 50-5 including 3-2 in the MAC. This season marks the end of the first decade of the 2st century. It also saw the Cavaliers achieve 23 wins which is the most victories among any Ohio school. The Cavs were only defeated 5 times in the last 0 years too. Also is the only program to record at least 0 victories in each season of the decade. The Cavaliers have been the the playoffs for 3 straight seasons and 4 of the last 5. All of this success can be traced back to the standout leadership of Coach John Reed. He just completed is 5 season at the helm and his record here stands at 68-3 which is an average of wins per season. He leads all MAC coaches with 9 league titles. Coach Reed is 2 for 5 in state finals and has a overall playoff record of And finally his career record is Coach Reeds spread offense has averaged 33 points per game, been shutout only twice and held to 7 points or less just 9 times. One key to s long history of success has been the job Coach Tim Hoying has done as defensive coordinator.
