Place an X in the box next to the correct answer. The pass mark is 80%. You will need to use the FIBA rule book, the FIBA Interpretations, the Referee Information Booklet, WBA Domestic Rules and WBA Uniform Policy. Communication What preventative voice/ words should the referee say in the following scenarios? 1 A player has used his dribble and is being double teamed closely by two defensive players. He has held the ball for two seconds so far. 2 A defensive player is guarding a player dribbling up the court. He has tried to reach in to knock the ball away and the referee thinks he is going to do it again and will probably commit a foul. 3 A player is attempting to set a screen but appears to be moving as the dribbler takes his defender towards the screen. The screener looks as though he will move into the defensive player and cause contact. 4 Two opposition players are trying to get front position at the low post. The referee in lead can see this. They are beginning to push and link arms to get front position. 5 After a technical foul given to a player, the player then continues to swear at the referee and does not stop using offensive language. This should be a: technical foul. verbal warning. disqualifying foul. report to the tribunal. 1
6 If you decided to call a disqualifying foul, in the previous example, what should the referee do to make sure the player leaves? What if the player refuses to leave? 7 As a defensive player goes past a screen, he deliberately elbows the screener in the throat. This should be a: verbal warning. technical foul. disqualifying foul. report to the tribunal. 8 An offensive player is attempting to set a screen for a teammate to dribble past. The screen looks like it will not be stationary when the defence arrive. What could the referee say that might prevent calling a foul? Anticipation and Decision Making 9 What is the no-charge zone and how do we use it? Why is it important to know if the offensive player is airborne for the use of no-charge zone? Use the diagrams below to explain your answer. 10 Team A are inbounding the ball in the backcourt. The eight second count begins when: the ball leaves the hands of the player inbounding the ball. touches any player in the court. touches a teammate of the player inbounding the ball. the ball is controlled by a teammate of the player inbounding the ball. 2
11 For a five second violation to occur on a player who is in the court during play, what needs to happen? 12 A2 is dribbling up the court and has used five seconds when the defensive player knocks the ball out of bounds. How many seconds do Team A have remaining to get the ball into their frontcourt? eight seconds. five seconds. three seconds. 13 A4 shoots for a field goal and after the release of the ball, the 24-second signal sounds. The ball then lodges between the ring and the backboard. This is a: jump ball situation and possession shall be decided by the possession arrow. team B ball as it is a violation as the 24-second signal had sounded and the ball is considered to have missed the ring. 14 A4 passes the ball into A team s backcourt following a successful field goal by B team. A5 bats the throw-in to the floor but does not secure control until the ball rolls on the floor for three metres. A5 then secures control. The 8-second count shall begin when: A5 touches the ball. A5 controls the ball. 15 Dribbler A4 fumbles the ball and it rolls loose on the floor. During the loose ball, A5 fouls B6, the fifth team foul for the quarter. The referee should: Award Team B with two free-throws due to the fifth team foul for the quarter. Award Team B with a throw-in due to the foul being an offensive foul. 16 A3 has been in control of the ball for five seconds in Team A s backcourt. A3 attempts a pass to a teammate in Team A s frontcourt. B4 jumps from Team A s frontcourt, and while airborne, taps the ball back to A3 who is still in Team A s backcourt. This is: a backcourt violation. legal play and Team A will have three seconds to move the ball into the frontcourt. legal play and Team A will have eight second to move the ball into the frontcourt. 17 The officials, in error, fail to award A4 with two free throws. Team A makes the throw in and then scores a field basket. The error is then discovered. The referees should: ignore the error and continue the game. when the game has stopped, cancel Team A s basket and award two free throws. when the game has stopped, count Team A s basket and award two free throws. 3
18 A spectator sitting on the opposite side to the players bench is continually passing comments to the referee about his refereeing performance. This is not disrupting the game but is continually distracting the referee. The referee should: ignore the spectator and continue to referee. stop the game and warn the spectator. stop the game and instruct the spectator to leave the stadium. stop the game and seek out the shift supervisor. 19 During a match, Team A coach and Team A assistant coach alternate standing up. When one is sitting down, the other is standing up. This is: legal play. not legal play. 20 Player B8 is injured. The Team B physio or coach comes onto the court and treats B8. After approximately 45 seconds he is ready to resume playing. The referee should: allow B8 to continue playing. direct B8 to be substituted from the game. 21 The referee observes that player A4 is bleeding and requests A4 to leave the court. Coach of Team A requests a time out. A4 is attended to during the time out and the bleeding is stopped and the cut covered. Before the scorer has signalled a substitution, A4 requests to come back on the court. The request should be: granted. denied. 22 The coach of Team A is charged with two technical fouls for unsportsmanlike behaviour by substitutes A10 and A11. The coach of Team A should be: permitted to continue to coach Team A. disqualified from the game and the assistant coach should continue to coach Team A. 23 The 24 second device sounds whilst the ball is airborne on a shot for goal. The ball strikes the ring and rebounds directly above it, when a defensive player A4 jumps and taps the ball away thus preventing a score. This is: legal play. a 24 second violation. a goaltending violation. 24 A4 commits a disqualifying foul. The coach of "A team has: thirty seconds to effect the substitution. sixty seconds to effect the substitution. 25 Before the ball is legally tapped on a jump ball, non-jumper A7 breaks the plane of the jump circle with his/her body. This violation should be called: immediately. if, after the jump ball, Team A gain control of the ball or the ball is contested. 4
26 A4 is attempting to bring the ball up the court and is in his backcourt when B3 fouls him. How many seconds does Team A have to get the ball into their frontcourt? eight seconds. five seconds. three seconds. 27 If there were five seconds remaining to get into the frontcourt, what should the referee do before handing the ball to the player to inbound? 28 A3 is bringing up the ball and attempts a lob pass over the defensive team which are set up in a full court press. Defensive player, B4, jumps from his frontcourt, intercepts the ball and lands in his backcourt. This is: legal play. a crosscourt violation. 29 Dribbler A5 is in his backcourt. He gets two feet over the halfway line but is still dribbling the ball in his backcourt. He pressured by a defensive player and he retreats to the backcourt. This is: legal play. a crosscourt violation. 30 A2 intercepts the ball and is attempting a fast break. Defender B3 makes contact with A2 causing A2 to lose control of the ball. The referee should call an unsportsmanlike foul if: Any foul occurs. B3 is the last defender. B3 is the last defender and he has made contact from behind or beside A3. 31 A2 is dribbling the ball in the frontcourt when B2 injures himself. B2 is lying on the ground in the backcourt. The referees should: stop the game immediately to allow B2 to receive treatment. allow the game to continue until Team B gain control of the ball, a whistle is blown, or B2 is in danger of being in the way of the play. 32 B2 is dribbling the ball when A4 and B4 commit a double foul against each other. The foul called on B4 is deemed to be unsportsmanlike. The penalty should be: Two free throws awarded to A4 followed by a throw in for Team A. The free throws cancel out and possession should be awarded to Team A. The free throws cancel out and possession should be awarded to Team B. 33 To understand the rule book, you must know the following. The opponent s basket is the one which the: offensive team must score in. defensive team must score in. 5
34 Name the F s referees use when considering block/ charge situations. F F F How do the three F s help us determine if a charge should be called? Mechanics 35 In the last two minutes of play, Team A knock the ball out of bounds. It is Team B s throw in from the back court (marked on the diagram below). Team A now call a timeout. Mark on the diagram where the ball should be thrown in from after the timeout Draw in the Trail and Lead referee where you believe they should be standing in the diagrams below. 6
39 Use the court and the space below to explain what the buttonhole mechanic is when you are stuck behind a fast break and you know you cannot make it into lead position. 40 When a shot is attempted the minimum expectation for lead position is: completely against the wall away from the baseline. past the baseline and not on the side of the court. near the baseline on the side of the court. Domestic Rules Refer to the WBA uniform policy for the following questions: 41 Two teams are playing against each other. Team A is wearing navy blue singlets and Team B are wearing black singlets. The referees should: ask the teams if they think it is a clash of colours. decide that there is no colour clash. decide that it is a colour clash and the first named team needs to wear alternative singlets. decide that it is a colour clash and the second named team need to wear alternative singlets. 42 Two players from the same team have the number 4 on their singlet. A player decides to put a piece of tape on the singlet so it looks like the number 14. The referees should: allow the player to play with number 14 with no further penalty. instruct the player to remove the tape, turn his singlet inside out and play as 00 and no penalty. instruct the player to remove the tape, turn his singlet inside out and play as 00 and a five point uniform penalty awarded to the opposition team. 7
43 A player has an eyebrow ring when the referee instructs the player to remove the ring. He claims he cannot remove the eyebrow ring. The referee should: allow the player to play with the ring on. instruct the player he must tape over the ring. instruct the player that it must be removed and cannot be taped. 44 A player has an eyebrow ring when the referee instructs the player to remove the ring. He claims he cannot remove the eyebrow ring. The referee should: allow the player to play with the ring on. instruct the player he must tape over the ring. instruct the player that it must be removed and cannot be taped. 45 A referee is a permanent on the Saturday AM roster. He knows he has a school function on this week and cannot attend his shift. He is expected to: Not find a replacement, but inform his supervisor and Chantal that he cannot make it. Text referees only, even if it means texting every referee on the phone list. Only use Facebook to find a replacement. Find a replacement, calling only the emergencies on the phone list for the Saturday AM shift. Find a replacement, even if it means calling every referee on the phone list. 8
