5 NADIRAH MCKENITH AND SHENNEIKA SMITH BECOME ST. JOHN S FIRST- EVER WNBA DRAFT PICKS On April 16, 2013, St. John s senior guards Nadirah McKenith and Shenneika Smith became the St. John s basketball program s first ever WNBA draft picks as McKenith was picked up by the Washington Mystics No. 17 overall and Smith was taken by the New York Liberty with the 25th pick. The dynamic duo of McKenith and Smith were an integral part of St. John s four-straight NCAA Tournament berths, during the most successful four years in St. John s women s basketball history. In their senior seasons, both were tabbed to the All-BIG EAST first team and the Preseason Naismith Trophy Early Season Watch List. St. John s has had five players in the past five years sign professional contracts overseas. McKenith and Smith s former teammates Da Shena Stevens and Centhya Coco Hart both played professionally last season with Stevens in Switzerland and Hart in Germany. Tina Sten (Class of 2008) played in the same league as Hart during the season in Germany. In addition to Stevens, Hart and Sten, Joy McCorvey (Class of 2010), previously played in Ger many with the DBBL s TUS Jena Burgaupark Lady Baskets and Monique McLean (Class of 2009) played for the Greek franchise, Olympiakos. OH CAPTAIN, MY CAPTAIN! Briana Brown was named the captain. A senior guard, Brown lead the Red Storm in free throw percentage with.831 and averaged 8.6 points and 5.1 rebounds per game. NEW FACES ON THE BENCH Head coach Joe Tartamella has made some key additions to his bench staff ahead of the Red Storm s quest for a fifth consecutive NCAA Tournament appearance. New to the St. John s sidelines this season are assistant coach Joseph Pellicane, video coordinator Alioune Ndiaye and graduate assistants Seja Gamble and Torey Northup-Jones. Pellicane is a familiar face at St. John s as he begins his second stint as an assistant coach for the Red Storm after serving as the top assistant from Before returning to Queens, N.Y., Pellicane has spent nine out of the 10 years as the head coach of nearby Dowling College s women s basketball program, where he boasted a (.640) record and led the Golden Lions to the 2013 Division II National Championship finals and two NCAA tournament berths. A native of Dakar, Senegal, Ndiaye spent the last two seasons working under Pellicane as an assistant coach at his alma mater Dowling College, where he helped the Golden Lions earn backto-back NCAA Tournament berths and reach the NCAA Tournament Final in Ndiaye had a standout career as a student-athlete for Dowling College from , serving as captain and two-year starting center before playing professionally for the New York Wizards of the Eastern Basketball Alliance. Gamble spent the last four seasons in the ECC Conference, playing for Pellicane at Dowling College. A four-year starter at guard, she was known for her defensive efforts and played a significant role on the most decorated women s basketball team in program history. Northup-Jones spent the last four seasons in the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference, playing for head coach Linda Cimino at Caldwell College. She finished her career with 1,850 career points to rank fourth all-time at Caldwell and holds the school record with 234 three-pointers made and a.805 career free throw percentage (.805). MCPHERSON NEARS 1,000 POINTS Senior guard Eugeneia McPherson enters the season with 877 total career points, 123 short of becoming St. John s 20th 1,000-point scorer. Were she to reach the mark, McPherson would become the third player to reach the 1,000-point plateau under head coach Joe Tartamella, joining graduated guards and the program s first ever WNBA draft picks Shenneika Smith and Nadirah McKenith, who achieved the feat in McPherson returns to the court after suffering a season-ending injury just five games into the season, which she opened with a 14-point, five-assist game against Texas in the WBI Tip Off Invitational. McPherson has averaged 8.5 points per game for her St. John s career and was the only player to start and play in all 34 games in the campaign, her last full season, finishing as the Red Storm s third-highest scorer with an average of 11.8 points per game and finishing with a team-high 32 3-pointers. SJU SNAPSHOT The Red Storm returns eight letterwinners from the squad in Briana Brown, Aliyyah Handford, Mallory Jones, Keylantra Langley, Eugeneia McPherson, Ashley Perez, Amber Thompson and Sandra Udobi. St. John s has four newcomers on the bench with transfers Selina Archer and Danaejah Grant joined by freshmen Aaliyah Lewis and Jade Walker. The trio of seniors (McPherson, Brown and Langley) have been to three consecutive NCAA Tournaments, while McPherson, a redshirt senior, has been to four. BIG EAST, BIG WINS St. John s went 11-5 in conference action last season and outscored opponents 61.6 points to Ending the season in a tie for third place, the Red Storm made its mark in the BIG EAST. In league games, the Red Storm finished 6-2 on its home court with one of the losses coming in a hrad fought battle to No. 3 UConn.
