5 KATE PETERSON First Year Coach Looks To Get Vikings Over The Hump To whom much is given, much is expected. The talent is here. The CSU Convocation Center a top-notch facility is at her disposal. And the University has stepped up its financial support of the women s basketball program. Now it is up to first-year head coach Kate Peterson and her staff to put the Vikings in a position to compete for the Horizon League championship. But Peterson s motto is not solely a one way street. Our players are going to feel like they are playing in a major program at a mid-major school. However, with that in mind, we are going to have higher expectations and demand more from the players than in the past. At the April press conference to announce her hiring, Director of Athletics Lee Reed gave some insight into why Peterson was the right choice for Cleveland State. "Kate brings a history of success as a proven recruiter and is considered by many to be one of the brightest young coaching minds in women's basketball. "I look forward to working with Kate to grow Cleveland State basketball into a championship-caliber program." An assistant at Wisconsin for the past six seasons, Peterson served as the Badgers' chief recruiting coordinator beginning in Under head coach Jane Albright, Peterson helped the Badgers bring in two top-10 rookie classes in the past four years. Peterson was responsible for the signing and development of WNBA draftees Tamara Moore and Jessie Stomski. She was instrumental to the Badgers inking Nina Smith, the 1999 USA Today National Prep Player of the Year. While in Madison, the Badgers advanced to the NCAA Tournament three times (1998, 2001 & 2002) and won the 2000 WNIT championship after falling in the title game the year before. Prior to her stint at Wisconsin, Peterson was an assistant at Eastern Illinois for four years ( ), joining the staff as the chief assistant in She played a large role in the Panthers posting a record and advancing to the conference semifinals in two years after the team won just two games. During her tenure in Charleston, Ill., Peterson served as the recruiting coordinator, was responsible for scouting opponents and developed a strength and conditioning program. She also assisted with practice planning and implementation and coached individual workouts. A native of River Falls, Wis., Peterson graduated from the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point where she was earned honorable mention Kodak All- America honors as a senior. A four-year starter, she twice garnered all-conference recognition and set an NCAA Division III national record for three-point field goals made per game (3.85) during the season. She was inducted into the UW-Stevens Point Hall of Fame on Sept. 30, Peterson completed her bachelor s degree in psychology from Stevens Point in 1991, and earned her master's degree in counseling and educational psychology from Indiana University in While at Indiana, she gained familiarity with the Big Ten Conference, serving as a graduate assistant for one year. She later took on expanded duties including scouting, on-campus recruiting and on-court coaching in In addition to her college coaching experience, Peterson served as the coach for an Athletes in Action camp held in Sao Paulo, Brazil in 1992, and has worked a variety of summer basketball camps and served as the director of the UW-Stevens Point summer basketball camp in Peterson lives in North Royalton. 6 AL BROWN First Year Purdue 62 Considered to be one of the premiere assistants in the country in terms of X's and O's, Brown comes to CSU after spending last season at Wisconsin. Prior to his stint with the Badgers, he served for seven years as an assistant to Pat Summitt at Tennessee. While there, Brown helped direct the Lady Vols to five Final Four appearances, including consecutive national championships in 1996, '97 & '98. In addition, Brown holds the distinction of being the only person to coach in the National Championship game in both men's (with Purdue versus UCLA in 1969) and women's basketball (with Tennessee in 1996-'98 & 2000). "Al Brown brings years of experience which is very valuable," said Summitt. "He's seen it all and his knowledge should be a tremendous asset to the program at Cleveland State. Al was on the bench at Final Fours and national championships. He understands all the aspects of the game." A 1962 Purdue graduate and a native of Connersville, Ind., Brown started out as an assistant on the Boilermaker men's basketball staff. He then went to Ball State as a men's assistant before being named men's head coach. His 1986 Cardinal team had a record-setting year, posting 21 wins en route to the Mid-American Conference tournament championship and a berth in the school's second-ever NCAA tournament. After stops at Western Michigan and Minnesota as an assistant, he joined the Tennessee men's staff before moving over to the Lady Vols' staff in In 26 years as a college coach, Brown has coached 10 players who have played or are playing in the NBA and eight that are playing in the WNBA, plus numerous athletes who have played overseas. KYLE RECHLICZ First Year Wisconsin 03 Rechlicz spent last season as a student assistant coach at Wisconsin after finishing her playing career for the Badgers in Kyle Black Rechlicz, Wisconsin's premier three-point shooter, made a triple in all but one game as a senior and set a school record with seven (of 11) three-pointers in collecting a career-high 26 points versus Holy Cross. The Indianapolis native led the Big Ten Conference as a junior hitting.406 percent from beyond the arc. As a senior, Rechlicz earned her second Academic All- Big Ten honor while averaging a career-best 12.1 ppg. "Kyle will be a great fit for Cleveland State," said Peterson. "Her energy and enthusiasm will help take this program to new heights." SEMEKA RANDALL First Year Tennessee 00 Born and raised in Cleveland, Randall starred at Trinity High School in Garfield Heights and at the University of Tennessee. She currently plays for the San Antonio Silver Stars of the WNBA. "I'm very excited -- it's a great opportunity to get into coaching and to give something back," said Randall. "There is a lot of outstanding talent in Ohio and I hope to help keep some of the top players here in Cleveland." Randall helped lead Trinity to a pair of state championships in 1993 & '96 and was named Parade Magazine's national prep Co- Player of the Year in In addition, she still stands fourth all-time in Ohio prep history with 2,799 career points. Randall then moved on to Tennessee where, as a freshman, she helped lead the Lady Vols to a perfect 39-0 record en route to winning the 1998 National Championship. While at UT, she was a twotime Kodak All-American (1999 & '00) and finished fourth in school history with 1,915 points. At CSU, Randall will be reunited with Brown, who was an assistant under Head Coach Pat Summitt all four years she was in Knoxville. After graduating a semester early with a degree in speech communications, Randall was selected by the Seattle Storm with the first pick of the second round (17th overall) in the 2001 WNBA draft. After two seasons with the Storm, she was traded to the Utah Starzz in (The Utah franchise moved to San Antonio prior to the start of the 2003 season.) "I couldn't be more excited about bringing Semeka into our program as an assistant coach," noted Peterson. "She brings ties to the local community and a good relationship with area high school coaches. As a player, she has a high level of intensity and a work ethic that we need to instill here at Cleveland State."
