No. 3 UCLA defeated No. 11 Arizona in Los Angeles on Jan. 20, UA enters Saturday afternoon on the heels of a win at USC. The Wildcats defense held the Trojans to just 19 points in the first half and helped the Arizona lead grow to as many as 23 points early in the second half. Lauri Markkanen had a game-high 23 points while connecting on five of his six attempts from beyond the arc (8 of 12 for the game from the field). Dusan Ristic grabbed 12 rebounds in the win, which was the second-highest rebounding game of his career. Ten of the last 12 games between Arizona and UCLA have been decided by single digits with five of those ten meetings being decided by four or fewer points. With 23 points in 35 minutes of action versus USC, Lauri Markkanen has now scored 75 points in 87 minutes in his last three games. The Wildcats 6-0 start in Pac-12 play marks the program s third-best start to conference action since The and Wildcats both won their first eight conference games in their respective seasons. This season marks just the sixth time UA has won its first six league games since joining the Pac-12 prior to the season. Thursday s victory over USC in the Galen Center advanced UA s record to 3-4 in the building, which leaves the program s 2-4 record at Pauley Pavilion as the lowest winning percentage of any away destination in the Pac-12 in the Sean Miller era (2009 to present). Arizona head coach Sean Miller has won 11 of his last 14 regular season games versus nationallyranked opponents. This stretch was preceded by defeating just one of his first seven opponents in the top 25 in regular season action after arriving in Tucson prior to the season. The Wildcats have led for at least 37 minutes in seven of those 11 victories. UA has led for 385:02 of the game action in those 11 wins while trailing 43:22 and being tied for 11:36. Arizona has led for approximately 87.5 percent of the 440 minutes of play during the win streak. HALF-BY-HALF DEFENSE Arizona s defense in the first half of its conference games has been the base for it leading in most defensive statistics in the Pac- 12 rankings while its second-half defense has seen some slippage from the first 20 minutes. Here s a year-by-year breakdown of the Wildcats win total in its first 20 games in the last 15 seasons : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : 18 ROAD WARRIORS In addition to holding one of the highest home court winning percentages in the nation, Arizona has shown a knack for continuing its winning ways outside of Tucson. Since Sean Miller s arrival prior to the season, the Wildcats have posted a record of (.630) away from McKale Center. That mark improves to (.643) at neutral site locations. UA s records in the last three-plus seasons are (.712) outside of Tucson and 21-8 (.724) in neutral sites. ONE OF THE WINNINGEST PROGRAMS IN THE LAST THREE YEARS As we continue through the season, Arizona has become one of the winningest programs in the nation in the past three seasons. Arizona, Villanova and Kentucky have jockeyed for the title of winningest program in the nation during this three-year span. Most wins in the NCAA since start of season (as of Jan. 20) 1st Villanova 115 wins 2nd Kentucky 110 wins Gonzaga 110 wins 4th Arizona 109 wins 5th Wichita State 107 wins 6th Wisconsin 103 wins Virginia 103 wins 8th Kansas 102 wins 9th Duke 100 wins It s just part of the winning culture instilled on the Arizona Basketball program since the arrival of head coach Sean Miller. In Miller s seven seasons in Tucson, UA has averaged 26.8 wins per season. Since the start of the season, the Wildcats have a (.797) record, both the most wins and best winning percentage in the Pac-12 in that span. WHILE THE SUN IS STILL OUT Arizona s record in day games is 3-1 this season and (.738) under head coach Sean Miller. Those victories and winning percentage dip slightly from the program s record in night games. UA is 14-1 (.933) in night games in and (.781) under Miller. PJC RETURNS TO FORM Parker Jackson-Cartwright s return from a high-ankle sprain is entering the seventh game. The junior has tallied 33 assists in his last six games (5.5 apg) to just eight turnovers, which is good for a 4.13 assist-to-turnover ratio. It is more of the same efficiency from the point guard from before the injury. Jackson-Cartwright tallied 46 assists to just 10 turnovers in his first six games of the season. His six games missed due to injury puts PJC below the minimum games played requirements for NCAA and Pac-12 rankings. If he were included in those rankings, Jackson-Cartwright s 3.68 assist-to-turnover ratio this season would rank sixth in the nation and first in the Pac-12. TOUGH TO BEAT Arizona has suffered only 23 losses since March of Of those 23 most recent defeats, only one has been by ten or more points. The average margin of defeat in those 23 losses has been 4.2 points with ten of the 23 losses being by three points or less.

Markkanen ranks tied for fifth in scoring (17.0 ppg), 13th in rebounding (7.4 rpg), 13th in field goal percentage (.520), third in free throw percentage (82.9 percent) and second in three-point field goal percentage (48.9 percent). He is the only player in the conference to rank in the top 15 in all five of those statistical categories. IN ELITE CONFERENCE OF CHAMPIONS COMPANY Through his first seven seasons as the head coach at the University of Arizona, Sean Miller has amassed a record of (.722) in Pac-12 games. As he continues to win Pac-12 games in that conference winning percentage continues to solidify his place in the history of the Pac-12 for coaches with six or more seasons in the league. The 89-consecutive weeks in the AP poll is currently the second-longest streak in the nation behind Kansas. Since the start of the season, Arizona has spent 60 weeks ranked in the top 10 of the AP poll during that span. UA took over the No. 1 ranking in the AP poll on Dec. 9, 2013, marking its first top ranking since 2003 and the first time a Pac-12 team had garnered the top spot since The Wildcats held the top spot for a program-record eight straight weeks. Arizona was one of just 11 programs in the nation to appear in all 20 Associated Press polls in , and one of just eight programs nationally to do so in UA was the only program in the nation to be ranked in the top 10 in every AP poll in the and the seasons. Consecutive weeks in AP poll (as of Jan. 16) 1st Kansas 153 weeks 2nd Arizona 89 weeks 3rd Villanova 65 weeks 4th Virginia 57 weeks THE FOUNDATION OF DEFENSE WITH ARIZONA BASKETBALL Sean Miller-coached teams at Arizona have led the Pac-12 in a variety of defensive statistics throughout his seven seasons in Tucson. The Wildcats defensive efforts have ranked nationally as well during the Sean Miller era, including defensive efficiency in KenPom.com s analytical rankings. KenPom s adjusted defensive efficiency metric measures points scored allowed per 100 possessions with adjustments for the quality of opposing offenses, the site of each game, and when each game was played (recent games get more weight). Here s how the defense has started ths season off in this metric compared to Sean Miller s previous Arizona teams. ARIZONA ADJUSTED DEFENSIVE EFFICIENCY SINCE National Rank Rating th th th st st rd th th 91.5 GIVING 11 CONSECUTIVE WINS MORE CONTEXT Arizona s current eleven consecutive wins being the fifth double-digit win streak under Sean Miller is impressive. Perhaps even more impressive about the body of work is that the ten wins is the fewest of those five streaks. 21 consecutive wins Nov. 8, 2013 through Jan. 29, consecutive wins Feb. 13, 2015 through March 26, consecutive wins Nov. 11, 2012 through Jan. 5, consecutive wins Nov. 14, 2014 through Dec. 19, consecutive wins Dec. 6, 2015 through present By comparison, the rest of the Pac-12 has combined to win ten or more consecutive games on only nine different occasions since the start of the season. No other Pac-12 program has had more than three separate double-digit winning streaks as Arizona is responsible for five of the 14 (.357) total such streaks in eight seasons in the Pac-12. BOB ELLIOTT TO THE PAC-12 HALL OF HONOR The 2017 class of the Pac-12 Hall of Honor will include Bob Elliott as Arizona s inductee into this prestigious honor. In the long, prestigious line of distinguished players at the University of Arizona, Bob Elliott is perhaps the catalyst of this great history. An All-American twice in his career with the Wildcats during the mid-1970s, he is still in the top three in program history in career points, rebounds and free throws and remains the only Wildcat to score over 2,000 points and grab 1,000 rebounds in a career. Elliott averaged 23.3 points per game his sophomore season of , a mark that has only been eclipsed once in the 40 years since. Elliott helped guide the Wildcats to an mark during his career, including the program s first-ever Elite Eight appearance in the 1976 NCAA Tournament. Elliott s greatness also extended to the classroom where he was a three-time Academic All-America selection while receiving his conference s scholar-athlete award as a senior. After graduation, Elliott was a second round selection of the Philadelphia 76ers in the 1977 NBA Draft. His professional career expanded throughout the NBA, CBA and overseas.

In the and seasons, attendance at Arizona s away games in Pac-12 play increased at least 48.0 percent over season averages prior to playing the Wildcats. Deandre Ayton (Phoenix, Ariz.), Alex Barcello (Phoenix, Ariz.), Ira Lee (Los Angeles, Calif.) and Brandon Randolph (Yonkers, N.Y.) give Arizona another top recruiting class in the nation. Deandre Ayton lbs. Center Phoenix, Ariz. Coach Sean Miller on Ayton: I m not going to sugarcoat it, Deandre is one of these once in a generation types of players. He s big, seven feet (tall). The fact that he hasn t lifted weights is astonishing to me because when you shake his hand, he has a physical presence as a young person that you don t often times see. One thing I m really excited for sure is to plug him into our strength and conditioning program, which is a real part of our program. The thing that impresses me about Deandre as a player is that he is really smart. He has the know-how to play with four other players that not a lot of big guys have. He can pass, he can step away from the basket and dribble the ball, and he s a really skilled player. *Widely considered to be the top prospect in the nation in the 2017 recruiting class *Became the first overall No. 1 recruit to commit to a Pac-12 school since 2007 *Named to Naismith Trophy Watch List as top prep player in the nation. Alex Barcello lbs. Guard Phoenix, Ariz. Coach Miller on Barcello: Alex is a point guard from Phoenix and an incredible student. He has the makings to be an incredible leader, and has some characteristics of T.J. McConnell that we ve grown to love. I think that he has a fire inside of him, a toughness, and a love of the game that at that position you love to have. We are really elated to have him. Alex is not small, he s 6-1, 6-2 and has a good build to him. Another thing we love about Alex, in addition to his playmaking skills, is that he can really shoot the three Being from Phoenix is nice for his family. He has already won several state championships, and winning is a real part of his background. *ESPN Top 100 member and rated No. 2 player in Arizona behind Deandre Ayton *Helped guide Corona del Sol to back-to-back state championships *2014 Arizona Gatorade Player of the Year Ira Lee lbs. Forward Los Angeles, Calif. Coach Miller on Lee: Ira Lee is the one we ve probably been with the longest in terms of our recruiting efforts. We identified Ira a long time ago and offered him a scholarship early on in his high school career. He s a guy with a high motor, plays the game with tremendous energy, and he s involved in so many different plays on both offense and defense. From a defensive perspective he has a chance to be great. Ira has the type of size and athleticism, but mostly the mindset of toughness that we really love. He s also a versatile player where he can play more than one position. He gives us versatility in that regard because you can play him in many different combinations, he s not a one position type player. *Member of ESPN Top 100 and rated in top ten nationally at his position *Rated as a top ten power forward by Scout.com *Son of Zeph Lee, former running back and defensive back with the Los Angeles Raiders Brandon Randolph lbs. Guard Yonkers, N.Y. Coach Miller on Randolph: Brandon, like Alex (Barcello), is an exceptional shooter. Not a small two guard, he s around 6 5, 6 6. When you have that type of frame, strength and conditioning can give you additional skills that you may not have right now. He s got a great frame, but where his body will go over the next couple of years, it s exciting to think about. He s more than just a shooter, he s a basketball player, really knows how to pass the ball. He plays on one of the best high school teams in the country, and that winning environment on both the travel circuit as well as a highly completive high school. He s a high-character kid, tremendous student and comes from a great family. *Rated in ESPN Top 100 nationally and as a top five in-state prospect *Ranked as a top ten shooting guard nationally by Scout.com *Averaged 16 points per game in Nike EYBL summer circuit with 39 percent shooting from deep ARIZONA IN THE LAST SIX SEASONS While Sean Miller and Co. arrived in Tucson for the season, the campaign effectively marks the beginning of the Miller Era. Six years ago, the Wildcats claimed their first conference championship under Miller and made a run to the Elite Eight that ended at the hands of eventual national champion Connecticut. While UA has led the nation in wins in the during parts of the last three seasons, the last six seasons of Arizona hoops have been among the best in the nation as well.
