Horizon League GREEN BAY LOOKS FOR FIVE-GAME WINNING STREAK TO END REGULAR SEASON After a thrilling overtime victory on Thursday night, Green Bay will look to close its regular season with a win on Saturday at UIC. A win would give the Phoenix a five-game winning streak heading into the Horizon League Tournament and hopefully host a first round contest at the Resch Center. Sophomore Kam Cerroni, the Horizon League s three-point leader, drained the game-winning three-pointer on Thursday, giving Green Bay its fourth win in a row and seventh in the past nine games. The Phoenix knocked down 9-of-14 three-pointers in the win, its fourth game in the last five contests the team has hit nine or more triples. Green Bay is now shooting 39.6 percent. Freshman Keifer Sykes, strengthening his case for Newcomer of the Year honors in the Horizon League, had 13 points and eight assists Thursday. The Chicago native has scored in double figures in nine consecutive games and the 14th time in the 15 games since his 18th birthday. Green Bay earned a hard-fought win over UIC when the teams met way back on Dec. 1. Sophomore Alec Brown, coming off an 18-point, 12-rebound game at Loyola, had 17 points in the first meeting. THE FLAMES: The Phoenix has faced UIC more than any other opponent in its history, with 83 previous meetings between the two squads. Green Bay is all-time against the Flames entering Saturday, including on the road. THE FIRST MEETING: Green Bay won the first meeting in the Horizon League opener for both teams. The Phoenix led by seven at halftime and 10 early in the second half before UIC rallied. Alec Brown had 17 points and seven rebounds to lead four players in double figures. BACK HOME ON THE ROAD: The Phoenix brings nine different players and coaches from the Chicago area to the Windy City this weekend. All six Green Bay players from Chicago are newcomers, including sophomore Terry Johnson and freshmen Aaron Armstead, Jared Dimakos, Josh Humphrey, Greg Mays and Keifer Sykes. The Chicago natives combined for 28 points in Tuesday s win. HOME SWEET HOME: Green Bay went 12-2 at the Resch Center this season, completing one of its best ever seasons at the facility. The Phoenix went 13-2 at home during the season. Green Bay has a 22-6 home record in two seasons under head coach Brian Wardle. CAN I SEE SOME ID?: Sykes is in the running for Horizon League Newcomers of the Year. Since turning 18 on Dec. 30, the freshman is averaging 14.4 points and 4.7 assists in 15 games. Since becoming eligible to vote, the country s second-youngest player has scored in double figures in 14 of 15 games, including nine in a row. He leads all Horizon League freshmen in points, assists and assist-to-turnover ratio and is ninth in the conference in scoring in league play. CERRONI STREAKIN : Sophomore Kam Cerroni, the Horizon League s top three-point shooter at 47.2 percent, has consistently given the Phoenix a presence from long distance. After hitting five threes Tuesday against CSU, he made three more on Thursday and has now drained a three-pointer in 17-straight games and in 21 of the past 22. He is now 58-of-123 from long range this season. In league play, Cerroni is shooting 50.5 percent from beyond the arc and averaging 10.8 points per game. TOP THE CHARTS: Sophomore Alec Brown has broken the program s single-game, single-season and career blocked shots records this season. The 7-foot-1 Brown has 86 blocks this season and 153 for his career. He has a block in 53 of 60 career games and became the program s alltime leader in the category in just 54 career games. On Thursday, he had four or more blocks for the 10th time this year, tallying five. This season is the fourth time that a Phoenix team has blocked at least 100 shots ( , ). Eleven different players have blocked a shot this season, with Brennan Cougill (24) and Greg Mays (10) helping Brown the most. Green Bay is third in the conference in blocked shots per game (4.8) and had seven in the win over Loyola on Thursday. SCORING SURGE Green Bay s offense has steadily improved throughout the season and is clicking at the right time. In league play, the Phoenix is ranked second in scoring offense (67.3) and tied for third in field goal percentage. In the past nine games, Green Bay has averaged 69.6 points per game and scored 70 or more seven times. TRIPLE THREATS In league play, Gren Bay is ranked second in three-point percentage at 39.6 percent. Cerroni is the Horizon League leader in three-point percentage (47.2%, ) and has improved in league play to 50.5 percent (46-91). Senior Steve Baker is fourth in the league at 41.3 percent (33-80) while Brennan Cougill is shooting 38.1 percent (24-63) from long range. Green Bay has hit nine or more three four times in the past five games (36-83). TOP OF THE CLASS Sykes has started 26 of 28 games at point guard for the Phoenix and is averaging 10.7 points, 3.2 assists and 2.5 rebounds per game. He is the lone freshman ranked in the top-20 in the Horizon League in scoring or in the top-10 in assists per game. In conference play, he has raised his averages to 13.1 points and 4.4 assists and is shooting 49.7 percent. Sykes ranks ninth in scoring, third in assists and first in assist-to-to ratio in HL action. DROPPING DIMES, NOT THE BALL Sykes 17 points and 10 assists in 37 minutes against Youngstown State came without committing a turnover. The freshman s game marked the first time a Green Bay player had tallied 10 assists since Rahmon Fletcher on March 18, It was also the first 10-assist, 0-turnover game by a Phoenix player in over five seasons (Ryan Evanochko vs. Cleveland State, 2/3/07). His 2.1-to-1 assist-to-to ratio (75 assists/36 TOs) in conference games ranks first in the Horizon League. BLOODY GOOD GAME In the win against Butler on Jan. 28, Sykes was forced to wear three jerseys due to a head gash that left two jerseys bloodied. Sykes ended up scoring points in each uniform, tallying four points in #24, four points in #1 and six points in #11 to help the Phoenix seal the win. 4 WHAT CAN BROWN DO FOR YOU? 7-foot-1 sophomore Alec Brown was named to the Preseason All-Horizon League squad before the season and is making a strong case for postseason honors. Brown ranks in the top-10 in the league in points (13.6, t7th), rebounds (8.0, 2nd), free-throw percentage (78.2, 5th), blocked shots (3.1, 2nd), offensive rebounds (3.1, 1st) and defensive rebounds (4.9, 5th). In 16 Horizon League games this season, Brown is averaging 14.1 points (6th), 8.1 rebounds (2nd), 3.2 blocks (2nd) and ranks seventh in free-throw percentage (.772). In his 45th career game, Brown scored 13 points at Butler to reach 500 points for his career. He surpassed 700 in his 60th game against Loyola. Brown broke the career blocks record in just his 54 career games and now has 153. Against Wright State on Feb. 10, Brown broke his own single-season school blocks record. He now has 86 in With 11 blocks against Wright State, Brown established new school and Horizon League single-game records. He has recorded a block in 26 of 28 games in and 53 of his 60 career games. Brown has reached double figures in points in 21 of 28 games this season and 38 times in his career Green Bay Men s Basketball Game 29: UIC PHOENIX NOTES LEAGUE STAT LEADERS SPECIALTY STATS COOOOOGS CONTRIBUTIONS Junior Brennan Cougill has given the Phoenix a compliment to Brown on both ends of the floor in his first year. Cougill is third on the team in scoring with 9.5 points per game and leads the team in field goal percentage (49.2). On the glass, he is fifth in the Horizon League at 7.3 boards per game and second in defensive rebounds (5.4). He has added 24 blocked shots, 40.3 percent from long range (27-67) and 75.8 percent (50-66) free-throw shooting. HISTORIC DOUBLE-DOUBLES: Sykes and Cougill combined to do something in the Feb. 14 win over Youngstown State that had never been done in Green Bay s Division I history. Sykes (17 points/10 assists) and Cougill (17 points/11 rebounds) are the first teammates to have a points/assists double-double and a points/rebounds double-double in the same game since Green Bay went Division I in CERRONI IN THE CLUTCH In the last five minutes of games this season, Cerroni leads the Phoenix in scoring.
