The Red Storm recorded yet another spectacular season in , finishing the year with a record of and advancing to the WNIT Round of 16. The WNIT run marked the eighth-straight postseason appearance for the Red Storm, a stretch that included five trips to the NCAA Tournament from With that winning tradition in mind, the league s coaches predicted the Red Storm to finish second in this year s preseason poll, it was announced on Oct. 14 at BIG EAST Media Day. Picked only behind two-time defending conference champion DePaul, the Red Storm also sported the BIG EAST Preseason Player of the Year for the first time in program history, as Aliyyah Handford took home the honor. Last season, Handford led the BIG EAST in scoring at 19.3 points per game and also finished in the top-10 in rebounding with 6.5 boards per contest. In addition to Handford, Danaejah Grant was also named to the Preseason All-BIG EAST Team after ranking fourth in the conference in scoring a year ago with 17.1 points per outing. Friday night s outing will mark the 100th game in the heading coaching career of Joe Tartamella. Entering his fourth season at the helm of the Red Storm, Tartamella has compiled a record of in 99 career games, good enough for a winning percentage of.646. Having been to a postseason in all three of his head coaching campaigns, Tartamella began at St. John s in 2002 as a graduate assistant before being elevated to an assistant coach in 2005 and then the team s associate head coach beginning in Tartamella took over the reins of the program following the team s Sweet 16 run in and has since guided the Red Storm took three-straight winning seasons, including two-consecutive 23-win campaigns. With the Pac-12 sending five teams to the NCAA Tournament last year, UCLA earned the conference s automatic bid to the WNIT with a sixth-place regular season finish. Despite entering the tournament with a record of 13-18, the Bruins rattled off six wins in a row, defeating West Virginia in the title game. The Bruins return five of their six top scorers from their WNIT title team, led by senior guard Nirra Fields at 15.0 points per game. An All-Pac 12 selection from a year ago and a Montreal native, Fields helped lead Canada to gold at this summer s Pan-Am Games. Jordin Canada, who hails from Los Angeles, returns to the Bruins after claiming Pac-12 Freshmen of the Year and WNIT Most Valuable Player honors last season. She also started six games for Team USA this summer, as the Americans took home gold at The World University Games in South Korea. UCLA was picked to finish tied for fourth in the Pac-12 Preseason Coaches Poll alongside Cal. Only Oregon State, Stanford and Arizona State were selected ahead of the Bruins. The Bruins received votes in both the Associated Press and USA TODAY Preseason Polls. st. john s vs. UCLA- the series Friday s season opener will mark the second meeting all-time between the Red Storm and the Bruins. The first and only matchup between the two teams came during Tartamella s first year as a head coach in in the St. John s Chartwells Holiday Classic. The 14th-ranked Bruins outlasted the Red Storm in overtime, 53-52, as a lastsecond layup from Jasmine Dixon sealed the victory for the visitors. Shenneika Smith scored 25 points and grabbed six boards in that game for the Red Storm. Freshman Aliyyah Handford tallied eight points, three boards and two steals in 33 minutes of action. HANDFORD CHASES HISTORY Entering her senior season ranked seventh on the St. John s career scoring list, Aliyyah Handford is within striking distance of the St. John s all-time scoring record. With 1,514 points through three seasons of play, Handford is just 436 points away from tying Ling-Ling Hou for first place on the program s all-time scoring list. The senior guard from Newark, N.J., is set to climb the ranks in the first couple games of the season, sitting just one point behind former Red Storm star and current assistant coach Da Shena Stevens in sixth place. She is also just 22 points behind Kia Wright for fifth place on the St. John s all-time scoring list. With 567 points as a sophomore and 655 points as a junior, Handford set the school s single-season scoring record for each of those classes. To accomplish that same feat as a senior, Handford would need 706 points this year, as Debbie Beckford, the program s second-leading scorer all-time, tallied 705 in the BIG EAST Championship season of It is not out of the realm of possibility that Handford could become the first women s player in St. John s history to reach the 2,000-point plateau. Three players have done it on the men s side: D Angelo Harrison ( ; 2,178), Malik Sealy ( ; 2,402) and current men s basketball coach Chris Mullin ( ; 2,440). Mullin and Handford have something in common, as both players accumulated stunning point totals with minimal help of the threepoint shot. The three-point line had not yet come to the college game when Mullin played, and Handford can attribute just nine of her 1,514 career points to the three-point shot. GRANT within reach of milestone In addition to Handford s chase of history, Danaejah Grant is also within reach of a milestone. With 946 points for her career, the Piscataway, N.J., native is just 54 points away from reaching 1,000. With 94 of those points coming during her freshman season at Clemson, Grant is 148 away from becoming the 22nd player to reach the millennium mark at St. John s. Last season, Grant scored 580 points for the Red Storm, good enough for the fifth-highest single-season point total in program history. handford and grant form dynamic duo Last season, the backcourt duo of Aliyyah Handford and Danaejah Grant combined to form one of the most prolific scoring pairs in the nation. With a combined 36.4 points per game, the two Garden State products made up the NCAA s fifth-highest scoring pair of teammates. In the history of St. John s women s basketball, no two players have combined to score more points in a season than Handford (655) and Grant (580).

John s women s basketball program has prided itself on a tenacious defense. Last season was no different. The Red Storm allowed just 58.5 points per game in , good enough for second in the BIG EAST and 51st in the nation. Holding its opponent to 52 points or fewer in 17 of 34 contests last season, the Red Storm was 21-2 when holding the opposing team to less than 40 percent from the floor and 23-5 when limiting its opponent to less than 40 percent from beyond the arc. A smart defensive team, the Red Storm committed just 14.6 fouls per game last season, the 18th-best total in all of the NCAA. TARTAMELLA EXTENDED THROUGH The owner of 64 wins and a.646 winning percentage in fewer than 100 career games, Joe Tartamella received a contract extension through the season, it was announced in December. Tartamella, 36, started on the staff at St. John s in 2002 as a graduate assistant under then-head-coach Kim Barnes Arico. After one year as a men s basketball assistant coach at SUNY Maritime in , Tartamella returned to St. John s as an assistant coach in He held that position until 2008, when he was promoted to associate head coach. The St. James, N.Y., native bore that title for four seasons before being elevated to the team s head coach for the campaign. In his three full seasons on the bench, Tartamella has been to three postseasons, including NCAA Tournaments in 2013 and RED STORM IN SEASON OPENERS Over the past eight years, the Red Storm is 6-2 in season openers. Coach Tartamella s squad has recorded a victory in each of the past two season tip-offs, downing Yale in and Sacred Heart in Both of those wins came on the road. Prior to that, the Red Storm dropped two-straight season openers, falling to no. 14/13 Texas in and St. Bonaventure in the Sweet 16 season of Before that historic campaign, the Red Storm won four-straight from to Last season, the Red Storm won 10-consecutive contests to kick off the season. 5 replacing greatness One of the Red Storm s most monumental tasks this season will be replacing the interior presence of four-year standout Amber Thompson. Last spring, Thompson graduated as the program s all-time leading rebounder, pulling down 1,084 boards during her illustrious career in Queens. Not only did Thompson break the St. John s career rebounding record, but she did it in convincing fashion, grabbing over 200 more boards than Dianne Pugh in second place (868). As a senior, Thompson pulled down 370 boards, shattering her own St. John s singleseason record of 313 set in Nationally, Thompson ranked 18th in rebounds per game with LITTLETON POISED FOR BREAKOUT SEASON In the quest to replace Amber Thompson, perhaps no player will have a bigger role to play than Imani Littleton. A 6-3 sophomore from San Diego, Calif., Littleton was the Red Storm s second-leading scorer off the bench in , averaging 1.4 points per game. While she showed flashes of brilliance at times during her rookie season, Littleton improved over the summer to the point where she is ready to become an everyday contributor for the Red Storm. In addition to a physical maturation that has seen her develop more muscle mass, Littleton has also been playing with greater confidence and poise in the preseason. ST. JOHN S IN THE POLLS After receiving votes in the poll every week last year, the Red Storm has once again received votes in the Preseason USA TODAY Sports Coaches Poll. St. John s received 33 votes, which coincidentally was equivalent to a 33rd place spot in the rankings. Last year, St. John s was ranked in the USA TODAY Sports Coaches Poll for one week, checking in at no. 25 before a loss to Indiana State in the St. John s Chartwells Holiday Classic game knocked the team out of the rankings. The Red Storm, who received votes in the Associated Press Poll for the first 10 weeks of last season, did not garner any recognition in this year s preseason AP rankings. LEWIS FACILITATES OFFENSE Last season, Aaliyah Lewis assumed the team s full-time point guard duties for the first time and performed splendidly. The 5-5 product of Staten Island, N.Y., led the team and ranked fifth in the BIG EAST in assists with 4.4 helpers per game. In addition, she was also one of the conference s leaders in assist-to-turnover ratio, dishing out 2.0 helpers for every one turnover. That total ranked fourth in the BIG EAST. walker looks to shine as upperclassman The Red Storm s third-leading scorer a season ago at 9.0 points per game, Jade Walker is set for a big junior season. The Maplewood, N.J., native reached double figures on 19 occasions, including a seasonhigh 18 points on 9-of-13 shooting against Seton Hall in the semifinals of the BIG EAST Tournament. In addition to her scoring touch, Walker also pulled down 4.7 boards per game. Walker grabbed in excess of 10 boards three times in , all three of which resulted in double doubles for the BIG EAST All-Rookie Team selection. red storm welcomes two freshmen The Red Storm will welcome a pair of first-year players in , both of whom have the ability to make an immediate impact on the floor for St. John s. Jordan Agustus, a local product born and raised in the Bronx, comes to St. John s from nearby St. Mary s High School, where she excelled as one of the area s top players. The 6-1 forward was a three-time All-Long Island selection by Newsday and is the 15thbest wing player in the country in her class according to ESPN Hoopgurlz. As a junior, Agustus led St. Mary s to a Nassau Suffolk Catholic High School Athletic Association championship, scoring 29 points in the championship game. Akina Wellere comes to Queens from Chicago, where she was widely regarded as one of The Windy City s top players. A first-team all-city and second team all-state selection by the Chicago Tribune as a senior, Wellere captained Gwendolyn Brooks to a 20-8 record and a 6-2 record in conference. The 18th ranked player at her position in the class of 2015 according to ESPN Hoopgurlz, Wellere propelled the Eagles to the Chicago Public League finals in In the team s semifinal game, Wellere put up 37 points and nine rebounds.
