Alex Stamchev: Man, whatever. Q: What do you consider your greatest achievement? CT: Making it to Auburn and playing on the team. PS: Well, having a scholarship to an SEC school is pretty big and not everyone gets that opportunity. I m pretty grateful that I got it. AS: Earning No. 1 ITA ranking in doubles and earning All-America with Tim Puetz. Q: What is your most treasured possession? CT: Probably my dogs. PS: Probably my necklace. I never take it off. AS: My first racket. Q: What living person do you most admire? CT: My old coaches, Fritz Nau and Byran Menton. They ve inspired me so much and I admire them a lot. PS: My dad. He s done so much for us and he always put our family first and sacrificed a lot for us so we could have the best life. I really admire him for that. AS: Fedor Emelianenko. Q: What is your greatest fear? CT: Probably failure. PS: I m really afraid of sharks. AS: Losing a relative or a close friend. Q: What talent do you wish you had? CT: I wish I could sing. I think I can, but I can t. PS: Tele-transportation, even though it s not possible. AS: I wish I could speak more languages. Q: What do you value most in your friends? CT: Probably selflessness and honesty and loyalty. PS: Honesty. AS: Just them being themselves. Q: Where would you like to live? CT: I really like Spain, but Brazil would be nice. PS: Anywhere in America. AS: California. Q: What is your idea of perfect happiness? CT: I think perfect happiness comes with knowing you give everything you can and having a lot of friends and enjoying time with them, and family. PS: Being around the people you love. 2 AUBURN FOOTBALL W E B E L I E V E I N A U B U R N university news Warrior Athletic Trainers provide healing hands for Army By Troy Johnson Marie Lackamp and other graduate students in Auburn University s Warrior Athletic Training Program don t grumble about starting their workdays well before dawn. They aren t the ones who have to endure push-ups, sit-ups, running and occasional yelling from Army drill sergeants. Lackamp and nine other graduate athletic trainers in the program awaken by 3 a.m. most mornings in order to evaluate, treat, rehabilitate and help prevent the injuries of soldiers in the Army s 192nd Infantry Brigade stationed at Fort Benning. I really enjoy this atmosphere and would enjoy doing it again, said Lackamp, a second-year student. It s something different to put on my resume that not everyone will have. Over the course of a year, Auburn s graduate athletic trainers will help care for an estimated 14,000 soldiers who cycle through Fort Benning for nine weeks of basic combat training or 14 weeks of infantry training. The Army s emphasis on training its personnel as soldier-athletes has underscored the value of on-site evaluation and treatment of injuries. JoEllen Sefton, who serves as director of the post-certification graduate athletic training program and co-director of the Warrior Research Center housed in Auburn University s Department of Kinesiology, said her students encounter different injuries than what they may have seen on football fields and basketball courts. The athletic trainers are encountering sprains and muscle strains, but more and more soldiers are sustaining stress fractures. Each week, Sefton looks over data collected by the trainers in an effort to pinpoint how and when injuries occur. The research conducted by Sefton and her students may help the Army prevent training injuries through modifying training tactics or improving equipment. We re trying to find trends and ways to reduce injuries, Sefton said. I ll compare the [training] phases they re in and see how those injuries occur and let the drill sergeants know so we can brainstorm on ways to reduce the injuries while maintaining the necessary intensity of the training. The Army s two-year investment in the Warrior Athletic Training Program has exceeded $583,000, but there has been an ample return. One soldier s visit to a troop medical clinic costs $250. Losing training time to a preventable injury can also sap morale and add to the overall price of training a soldier, which Lt. Col. Dean Weiler estimated at more than $30,000 per recruit. While the Army undoubtedly values the work being conducted by Sefton and her students, they are humbled by the opportunity to serve those who serve all of us. We re not enlisted, but it s a chance to serve our country, said first-year graduate athletic trainer Michael Hickey. These are the guys who are going in to protect us. It s a good feeling to help them. You re giving back to your country. Auburn s graduate athletic trainers treat stress fractures, sprains and other injuries typically sustained by soldiers during physical training at Fort Benning s Sand Hill. CL: Just going to class, then going to study and working hard in practice. Q: What are some of your hobbies outside of football? CL: Just like to play videogames, especially Madden. Q: What is the biggest difference between living in Auburn and your hometown of Hialeah, Fla.? CL: The town is way smaller, but you get adjusted to it. Also, there are no beaches here. Q: Who are you closest to on the team? CL: I m close with most of the D-Line, like Jeffrey Whitaker and Kenneth Carter. Q: If you could play any other position which would it be? CL: I would love to play linebacker. Q: What part of your game would you like to improve? CL: I need to be able to read blocks better. Also, I need to get a lot more physical. Q: What do you feel is the most important characteristic for a successful defensive lineman to have? CL: It has to be effort. Q: What was it like making your choice to play at Auburn? CL: It was a dream come true and it was actually a relief. I had all those colleges calling, but I finally picked the right place
