2 THE LAST TIME OUT American University Women s Basketball falls to Towson at Bender Arena on Sunday Afternoon. American University started the second half down by 11 and came within five several times, but it still wasn t enough to overcome the Tiger s lead. Towson started the second with a another bucket, but within minutes Nicole Ryan (Safety Harbor, Fla./Clearwater) ended the drought for the Eagles, answering with back to back field goals, including a three-pointer. With 12:20 left, junior guard Liz Hayes (Easton, Pa./Easton) brought the lead down to five, sinking it from downtown. With Towson looking to extend the lead, Sahar Nusseibeh (Uniontown, Ohio/North Canton Hoover) carried the momentum to defense, blocking a shot and regaining possession for American. Despite the effort, this was the closest AU would get to the win. With Hayes and Rachel Brazell (Mansfield, Texas/Mansfield Summit) hitting key three s as the minutes were winding down, a comeback looked good for the Eagles. The Tigers answered back and went on to win by 12. Nusseibeh, Hayes and Ryan all scored in double-digits for American University, with Nusseibeh posting a double-double, tallying 12 points and 10 rebounds. Ryan added 12 points, while Hayes netted 11 in the loss. American University was held to just 10 points for the first 14 minutes of the game, eventually leading to just 21 points in the first half, the lowest of the season. Towson was able to get 22 points off of AU turnovers, while the Eagles added 16 off the Tigers mistakes. Towson also had a advantage in rebounds. AU is now 1-3 on the season, while the Tigers to improve to 3-0. The Eagles head west over the Thanksgiving holidays when they compete in the Loyola Marymount Tournament on Nov. 24 and Nov. 25. THE VETERANS AU has nine players returning to the roster, including seniors Abby Lipskis and Jessica Tenuta. After scoring in double-digits in 11 games last year and finishing among the top-10 in the conference last year, Lipskis will be a key in establishing a low post presence this season. Junior Liz Hayes, who did not play in the season due to transfer regulations, is expected to step in and contribute significantly in the transition and as a scorer in the half court. McFerrin is returning a handful of experienced sophomores. Sahar Nusseibeh, a member of the PL All-Rookie Team, led AU in shooting and blocked shots, recording a team high of 15 last season. Two-time Patriot League Rookie of the Week Letitia Curry will continue to play the stopper role on defense. Curry led the team in rebounding last season with 7.4 rebounds per game. Talicia Jackson and Pam Stanfield are both tenacious defenders who understand the importance of defense and ball pressure. Combined, the two led the Eagles with 80 steals. Nicole Ryan was forced to miss 11 games last season due to an injury. With a healthy season, Ryan s ability to create opportunities off the pass and dribble make her dangerous to defnd. Rounding out the veterans is sophomore Ohemaa Nyanin, who joined American as a walkon mid-season brings depth to the post, contributuing in low-post rebounding. NEW KIDS ON THE BLOCK American University has five newcomers joining the squad, with four being transfers. Anna Baran, Rachel Brazell, Maggie Smith-Davidson and Stephanie N Garsanet bring at least one year of college experience to their first season with the Eagles. Lone freshman Paula Wargo joins American from Port Clinton, Ohio, finishing her high school career with 1,230 points. ABOUT THE STAFF Third year Head Coach Melissa McFerrin has a great crew by her side. Matt Corkery is the only returning assistant from the season. Assistant Diane Richardson joins American University from Riverdale Baptist where she guided the Crusaders to a record and a national top-10 ranking in two of the last three seasons. Amanda Kammes is in her first season as an assistant coach, after serving as the team s video coordinator last season. Karleena Tobin serves as the graduate assistant for the season after finishing up her four years at the University of Delaware. HOME SWEET HOME Bender Arena has proven to be a comfortable place for the Eagles to play, with AU posting a record at home going back to the season. American has posted double-digit wins at Bender Arena in four different seasons, including a 12-1 record in the season. Last year the Eagles went 4-7 at home, posting a 7-21 overall record. FROM DOWNTOWN Junior guard Liz Hayes went 7-12 in three-pointers in the team s last game against the University of Delware. She sunk three in the first half and four more in the second, combining with eight other points for a game-high of 29. With this feat, she is solely in first place in American University s Individual Records for three-point field goals made, in just her third game as an Eagle. She surpassed the six other players tied for first with six three-pointers made, last being done by Kaitlin Schuyler in Hayes also went right to the number one slot in 3- pt. field goal percentage, with a.583 percentage linking to her 7-12 effort. Hayes is now tied for fourth with graduate Tala Hadavi in three-point field goals attempted, each going for 12. FLYING SOLO Posting her career-high of 29 points against Delaware, Hayes is the only Eagle on the roster to reach this number. Sahar Nusseibeh is the closest behind, netting 24 points against Navy last season. LEADER OF THE PACK Point-guards are looked upon to lead the team and in her third game of the season, Hayes role shined through. Netting 11 points in the first and 18 in the second, Hayes carried her team from buzzer to buzzer, playing in 38 of the 40 minutes, the most action seen by an American player this season. EAGLES LEAVE THEIR MARK In addition to Liz Hayes newest accomplishment, two other current players are in the record books. After just one season at American University, sophomores Letitia Curry and Pam Stanfield are already putting their names in the books. Last season, Curry registered 206 rebounds in the season, ranking her tenth in American University s all-time rebounding history. She also grabbed 18 rebounds against Navy, a feat that moves her to fourth in the record books. Stanfield dished out 11 assists against Navy, ranking her second in assists PRONUNCIATION GUIDE No. Name Pronunciation 2 Talicia Jackson Ta-LEE-sha 11 Jessica Tenuta TEN-oot-a 31 Sahar Nusseibeh Sa-HARR NOOSE-eh-bay 32 Stephanie N Garsanet N Gar-SUN-ay 40 Abby Lipskis LIPS-kis 42 Ohemaa Nyanin O-HIM-ah Ny-AN-in American University Women s Basketball Game Notes ~ Page 2

3 in a game in AU s all-time individual records. Ending the season with a total of 100 assists left her one shy of topping off tenth place in assists per season. TOURNEYS TAKE THE EDGE Head Coach Melissa McFerrin s squads have competed in four different tournaments throughout her previous seasons with American University. In her first season, Mcferrin and AU played in two tournaments, the Southern Missouri Tournament in the beginning of December, followed by the UVa Tournament the last weekend before the New Year. During this season, American went 1-3 in tournament play and ended the year overall. Last year, American University participated in the FIU Tournament, where they lost to Seton Hall, but came back the next day to beat Western Michigan in overtime. Following the Christmas holiday, they particpated in the SPC Holiday Classic, going 0-2 against St. Peter s and UNC Wilmington. For the second straight year, AU went 1-3 in tournament competition. In her first two season at American, McFerrin has an overall record of 2-6 in tournament play and is looking to add some more slashes in the win column with the LMU Tournament. COMING UP BIG The Eagles have grabbed an average of 36.5 rebounds per game, with sophomore Letitia Curry leading the way with 32 rebounds, averaging 8.0 per game, respectively. Curry has grabbed double-digits in two of the four games this season and grabbed a season-high of 12 against Longwood. In the two games where Curry tallied lss than 10, Sahar Nusseibeh and Abby Lipskis steped up. Nusseibeh grabbed 10 against Towson, with Lipskis recording 10 against Delaware. DOUBLE TROUBLE Two American University players have recorded double-doubles in the season. Letitia Curry started her statistics early, registering 10 points and 11 rebounds in the Eagles season opener against Fordham. The last time out, Sahar Nusseibeh tallied 12 points and ten rebounds against Towson. Last season, Nusseibeh had a team-high of three double-doubles, while Curry added one late in the season. FRESH MEAT FOR American University head women s basketball coach Melissa McFerrin has announced that three players have signed National Letters of Intent to join the Eagles squad in the class of Small forward Michelle Kirk from Corning West High in Corning N.Y., combo guard Ashley Yencho from Parkland High in Allentown, Pa. and power forward Liz Leer from Abington High in Abington, Pa. will don the AU red, white and blue colors in the fall of Kirk brings impressive all-around ability to the Eagles. Last year she was named to the New York AA All-State team and averaged 28 points, 13 rebounds and four assists per game. Michelle is an athletic wing player who can score in a variety of ways, McFerrin noted. She has excellent body control and finishes well off the dribble and against contact. We see her being a great rebounder on both ends of the floor. She is working hard on her three-point shooting and we expect her to be a threat from behind the arc. Yencho should bring depth and range to the Eagles already strong backcourt. In 2006, she helped lead her team to a Pennsylvania 4A State Championship by scoring 12 points a contest while shooting 43 percent from three-point land. Yencho was a Lehigh Valley Conference All-Star and member of the Runnin Rebels AAU team that made it to the sweet 16 of AAU Nationals. Ashley is a versatile guard who can play the 1 or 2, McFerrin said. She has deep range on her 3 along with a very quick release. She is going to be a tempo guard who keeps our transition game going and puts pressure on the opponent s defense. Parkland High School is an elite program so Ashley expects to win. That mentality will be positive for us from day one. Yencho s AAU teammate and fellow incoming freshman Leer will make her presence known in the post at the power forward position where she averaged 16 points and 11 rebounds per game in Liz is a highly skilled forward who is comfortable facing up or with her back to the basket, McFerrin said. She can score either way and shoots a high percentage. She has excellent footwork and basketball IQ few young players possess. She is a crafty rebounder and will be able to make the transition to the college game easier than most. American University Women s Basketball Game Notes ~ Page 3

11 Outlook American University has a wealth of experience this season, pushing the Eagles to win their fi rst ever Patriot League championship, and to lead AU to its ultimate goal of becoming the Pride of the Patriot League. In her third season, Head Coach Melissa McFerrin is returning nine letterwinners, including three starters from the season. In addition to the team s veteran nucleus, AU s latest class knows what is expected of them to compete at the collegiate level. With four out of five newcomers joining American as junior transfers, they have experienced the game at a high level and are looking forward to excelling against Patriot League teams. For the first time we can blend returning talent and experience with incoming talent and experience. These new faces bring size, athleticism, position specifi c skills and most importantly knowledge of college basketball, McFerrin said. Mix these traits with toughness, competitiveness and desire and you will see huge contributions to our team and to the overall success of our program. The Backcourt With the backcourt of American returning five players from last year s squad, as well as two new additions, opponents will experience the Eagles offense at its peak. Senior Jessica Tenuta enters her third season with AU women s basketball, after trying out as a walk-on in the season. Although she has seen limited action in her past two seasons, McFerrin believes Tenuta makes her presence known. She brings great work-habits, energy and most importantly heart to the Eagles squad. Two juniors impacting AU s backcourt have played at the collegiate level, but have yet to debut with the Eagles. Liz Hayes, ineligible in the season due to NCAA transfer regulations, is looking forward to her fi rst game in the red, white and blue, competing in her fi rst game since March, Hayes is a versatile player whose experience and competitive nature should not be overlooked. Combining these characteristics with her ability to score from all over the floor, McFerrin is expecting Hayes to step in and contribute signifi cantly in transition and as a scorer in the half court. Rachel Brazell joins the squad after playing two seasons at Midland Junior college. The First Team ALL-WJCAC selection fi nished her two seasons as the career leader in three pointers, and averaged 15.5 points per game as a sophomore. McFerrin expects Brazell s ability to score, mixed with her winning attitude, to be a major impact for American this season. Increasing depth in the guard position is four sophomores, who gained valuable experience last season. Talicia Jackson, starting in 11 games last year, proved herself as a tenacious defender. She ended the season with 39 steals, and Jackson s ability to draw charging calls will continue to solidify the Eagles defense. Pam Stanfield is another guard who understands the importance of defense and ball pressure. The College Park, Md., native continues to transition into the role of a leader, while setting the tempo of the Eagles offense and creating shots for teammates. Nicole Ryan started last season strong, but was forced to miss 11 games mid-season due to an injury. The coaching staff is looking forward to a healthy season for Ryan, and is expecting her to be effective as a scorer and an open court defender. Her ability to create scoring opportunities off the pass and dribble will make her dangerous to defend. Anna Baran comes to AU with a year of experience at Daytona Beach Community College. The U-20 Polish National Team member runs well in transition and is an adept cutter and slasher to the basket. The Frontcourt Senior Abby Lipskis will be a key in establishing low post presence this season. After scoring in double-digits in 11 games last year, and finishing among the top-10 in the conference in blocked shots, Lipskis is expected to contribute significantly. The 6-2 center is also expected to be a dominant defender and rebounder on both ends of the floor. A member of the 2006 Patriot League All-Rookie Team, sophomore Sahar Nusseibeh returns with high expectations attached. Nusseibeh had a team-high three double-doubles on the season and led the Eagles in shooting and shots blocked, recording a team high of 15. Similar to last season, Letitia Curry will see time at both the forward and post position. The Pennsauker, N.J., native has improved her perimeter game and inside/out post play. Curry will continue to play a stopper role on defense. After leading the team in rebounding with 7.4 rpg, the two-time PL Rookie of the Week is expected to pick up where she left off, coming up huge on the boards. Ohemaa Nyanin walked on the team mid-year last season, and continues to develop her offensive skills. The 6-2 center brings depth to the post and contributes in low-post rebounding for the Eagles. Juniors Maggie Smith-Davidson and Stephanie N Garsanet will work alongside Lipskis, scoring off the boards. Smith-Davidson starts her first season with American after two seasons at New Mexico Community College, where she averaged 16 American University Women s Basketball Game Notes ~ Page 11

12 points per game and 10 rebounds per game. The 2005 First Team All-NJCAA Region 5 and First Team All-WJCAC selection is expected to have a strong physical presence in the frontcourt. N Garsanet will add an athletic presence in the middle, using her ability to block shots and to create scoring opportunities in transition and in the paint. At Barton County Community College, the Adibjan, Ivory Coast, native led the squad with 44 blocks. Paula Wargo, the team s lone freshman, will see time in the frontcourt. Averaging 16 points per game and 10 rebounds per game at Port Clinton High School, Wargo will look to gain experience and develop as a Division I collegiate player. The Schedule American University s schedule is highlighted by several regional rivals, including Longwood, Towson, UMBC, Georgetown and George Mason. McFerrin is looking forward to the rivalries for numerous reasons. The regional schedule allows AU to establish itself as a challenging opponent, McFerrin said. We compete against these teams year after year and expect to see continued improvement. Ultimately, we expect to establish ourselves as the team to beat. By participating in the Loyola Marymount Tournament, the Eagles will experience competition on the national level. By scheduling national opponents, such as Loyola Marymount, Texas A&M, Delaware and Liberty, American University will gain exposure to NCAA tourney-level opponents. We enjoy the regional rivalries and understand the opportunities presented from competing against ranked-teams, but we play these games to prepare ourselves to challenge for the Patriot League Title and to compete in the NCAA tournament. McFerrin said. Everything we do is geared toward that end. AU opens the regular season against A-10 competitor Fordham, followed by Longwood and Delaware. In late November, the Eagles travel to the West Coast, competing in the LMU Ayres Hotel Thanksgiving Tournament in Los Angeles, Calif. The Eagles open the tourney against West Coast Conference member Loyola Marymount, and will face either Texas A&M or West Virginia in their following game. The Eagles return to Washington, D.C., for four consecutive games, kicking off the regional rivalries against UMBC and Georgetown, followed by Furman and George Mason. American spends the remainder of December and the beginning of January on the road, splitting up a six-game away streak when the Eagles host Drexel University on Dec. 30. AU looks to open Patriot League play with a win when it takes on Lehigh on Jan. 6. After facing Bucknell on the road, American opens its home Patriot League schedule on Saturday, Jan. 13, when the Eagles take on Colgate University. AU returns to the road again on Tuesday, Jan. 16 to face defending Patriot League champions Army, hoping to avenge consecutive losses against the Black Knights. In the season, AU swept the season series over Army. In the second half of the season, the Eagles have four home games, hosting Lehigh, Bucknell, Army, and then ending the regular season with Lafayette on Saturday, Feb. 24 at Bender Arena.
