The Spartans closed the non-conference season splitting a pair of home games with a loss to Nebraska (81-55) and a win over Southern Oregon (89-87 OT). San José State returned just one starter and seven total letterwiners to the bench this season, from a team that went overall and 7-11 in Mountain West play last year. Sophomore guard Taylor Turney leads the Spartan offense with 13.5 points per game. Just behind her, senior guard Myzhanique Ladd averages 12.5 points per game, while adding a team-high 7.1 rebounds per game. Overall, SJSU is averaging 72.8 points per game, while giving up 88.2 from its opponents. As a team, the Spartans are shooting 37.4 percent (280- of-749) from the floor, 34.9 percent (97-of-278) from the 3-point line and 66.1 percent (144- of-218) from the free throw line. Jaime Craighead is in her fifth season as the head coach at San José State, where she has an overall record of With shared time in the WAC and the Mountain West, Utah State and San José State have a long-running history of competition. The Aggies lead the all-time series against the Spartans, USU holds a dominating lead (10-2) in games played in Logan, but the series is tied, 6-6, in games played in San Jose. Last season, USU and SJSU played just one game, with the Aggies winning the contest, 82-78, in Logan. SCOUTING THE AZTECS San Diego State ended the non-conference season with a 6-5 record, closing things out in a loss at UC Santa Barbara. The Aztecs will open Mountain West play against Wyoming on Thursday, before making the trip to Logan. The Aztecs welcomed back four of the team s starters from a year ago, along with five other letterwinners. Senior guard McKynzie Fort, a preseason all-mountain West player, leads San Diego State on the court, where she averages 15.8 points and 5.0 rebounds per game. As a team, the Aztecs are averaging 66.0 points per game, just behind its 66.5 points allowed. Overall, SDSU is shooting 39.2 percent (268-of-683) from the floor, 35.4 percent (91-of-257) from the 3-point line and 66.9 percent (99-of-148) from the free throw line. Stacie Terry is in her fifth season as the head coach at San Diego State, where she has an overall record of Aside from a pair of games in the 1980 and 1984 seasons, the series between Utah State and San Diego State is limited to shared time in the Mountain West since the season. The Aztecs hold a slight lead over the Aggies, 5-4, but Utah State has had good luck at home, leading that series, 3-1. Last season, the teams split the pair of conference contests, with each team winning on its home court. KICKING OFF THE CONFERENCE All-time, Utah State is in conference openers. Last season, the Aggies opened Mountain West play in a loss at Boise State (76-56). Utah State was 5-3 in Western Athletic Conference openers, 0-2 in Big West openers and is 1-3 in Mountain West openers. Since the reinstatement of the Utah State program, the Aggies are 6-8 in conference openers. SUMMING UP THE PRESEASON Utah State women s basketball ended the non-conference season with a 2-9 record, with wins against Dixie State and at BYU. The Aggies played five games against in-state opponents, going 2-3 in those contests. Utah State played games in three different time zones and against teams from seven different athletic conferences. AGAINST THE MOUNTAIN WEST Utah State has an all-time record against current members of the Mountain West. Utah State had one season sweep in conference play, posting a pair of wins over Nevada. Conversely, the Aggies were swept by Wyoming and New Mexico UTAH STATE WOMEN S BASKETBALL

3 PRESEASON PICKS Utah State women s basketball was picked sixth in the Mountain West women s basketball preseason poll as voted on by a panel of the league s 11 head coaches and media representatives. After claiming the tournament title at the end of the season, Boise State was picked to finish first in the league with 221 total points and seven first-place votes. Wyoming was tabbed second, as the Cowgirls earned 216 points and six first-place votes. Reigning regular-season champion Colorado State placed third in the poll with 211 points and six first-place nods. New Mexico (186 points) and UNLV (185 points) rounded out the top five with four and two first-place votes, respectively. Utah State was tabbed sixth with 136 points, followed by Fresno State in seventh with 117 points and San Diego State in eighth with 102 points. San José State (61 points), Nevada (60 points) and Air Force (29 points) concluded the poll in ninth, 10th and 11th places, respectively. THE BATTLE OF THE YOUNG Utah State and San José State boast two of the youngest rosters throughout the NCAA. The Aggie roster is made of 83.3 percent underclassmen with just two juniors representing the upperclassmen, ranking as the second-youngest team in the country. San José State has 80 percent of its roster made of freshmen and sophomores, the fourth-youngest roster in the NCAA. UNC Greensboro has the youngest team in the country with 87.7 percent of its roster as underclassmen. THE CORNERS OF THE WORLD Between the rosters of Utah State, San José State and San Diego State, there are players from six countries outside of the United States. Utah State has four players on its team from Australia. San José State boasts one player each from Germany and Sweden, while San Diego State has recruited players from Spain, England and Nigeria. FAMILIAR FACES Utah State junior center Deja Mason and San Diego State sophomore forward Monique Terry are both natives of San Antonio, Texas, and played together at Brennan HS. BLOCK THEM OUT Like she has done each year of her career, junior center Deja Mason leads the Aggies in the block column this season. In the 11 games this year, Mason has tallied 20 blocks. She now has 110 in her career, which ranks fifth all-time at Utah State. She needs 24 more blocks to set the career block record. Mason tallied 38 blocks as a freshman and 52 last season. Sophomore guard/forward Hailey Bassett is second on the team and the conference in blocks with 14, already surpassing her season total a year ago. Additionally, Utah State leads all conference teams in blocks, averaging 4.3 per game. Mason and Bassett rank first and third in the Mountain West standings, respectively. DUFFICY DOUBLES DOWN Whenever sophomore guard/forward Shannon Dufficy tallies double-digit numbers in points or rebounds, she does it in both. Dufficy has put together five double-double performances this season, doing so at UC Irvine, Southern Utah and BYU, as well as in home games against Dixie State and Denver. New Mexico s Jaisa Nunn leads the Mountain West with seven double-doubles this season, while UNLV s Katie Powell also has four. Dufficy is tied for second among active Mountain West players with 10 double-doubles in her career. Boise State forward Shalen Shaw leads all conference player with 16 career double-doubles. STARTING LINEUP SHIFT Utah State has used five different starting lineups this season. Rachel Brewster and Shannon Dufficy are the only Aggies to have started all 11 games, but Hailey Bassett, Jessie Geer, Deja Mason, Victoria Price, Eliza West and Olivia West have each seen some time among the starting five. THE STEADY STARTER Including the nine games this season, junior guard Rachel Brewster has started 46-straight games for the Aggies. Brewster started all but one game her freshman season, and has been among the starting five in every contest since. In all, Brewster has started 73 of the 74 games of her USU career. After a bit of back-and-forth from both teams to start the quarter, the Utah State defense held the Aztecs out of the media timeout. San Diego State missed nine-straight field goal attempts over a five-minute stretch, while the Aggies went on a 9-0 run. The Aztecs ended their skid in the final minute of the quarter, but USU led, 19-9 after one. Utah State maintained its control through the early minutes of the second quarter, but the Aztecs quickly started to gain some traction. The SDSU defense held the Aggies scoreless for nearly five minutes before freshman guard Eliza West ended the skid. In the meantime, the Aztecs chipped away at USU s lead, pulling within three points two different times. With a long pass from Dufficy, Brewster threw up a last-second shot from behind the arc, draining the 3 and giving Utah State a lead at the halftime break. Returning to the court, Brewster picked up where she had left off, scoring the first field goal of the half in the early seconds. She and Robinson each added another layup, the final points on either end for nearly three minutes. A single free throw for San Diego State ended the offensive skid, but the Aggies maintained their lead. Brewster then ended the Aggies struggle, hitting the first field goal in the team s last eight attempts. It wasn t until the 3:05 mark of the third quarter that the Aggies made their first trip to the free throw line, where Brewster went 2-of-3. USU was again held scoreless for the final three minutes of the quarter, while the Aztecs added seven-straight points, down at the end of the third. Robinson snapped USU s skid on the first possession of the fourth quarter. Layups from freshman guard Jessie Geer and Brewster followed, rebuilding the Aggies lead to double figures. With a layup from Dufficy, Utah State led by 12, matching its biggest advantage of the game. The Aztecs didn t score their first points of the quarter until the 4:53 mark, with a breakaway layup on a steal, also drawing the and-1. Robinson reached double figures for the second time this season after the media timeout, but SDSU answered with back-toback 3-point shots to cut the Aggies lead to three. As the final minute counted down, the Aztecs added two free throws to come within one possession. After timeouts from both benches, the Aggies drew a pair of fouls off San Diego State, where Robinson and Brewster combined for four free throws in the last 20 seconds of the game.
