Wake Forest brings an experienced nucleus into the campaign, with 10 letterwinners, including four starters, returning from a year ago. The team s top returning scorer and leading rebounder from a year ago, 6-0 senior Brenda Mock Kirkpatrick, is averaging 9.0 points and 4.8 rebounds through the first three games of the season. Kirkpatrick, the team s starter at power forward, leads a senior class which includes 6-1 forward Olivia Dardy and 5-10 guard Kristen Shaffer. Dardy spent much of last year on the injured list but has returned with a vengeance this season, averaging 10.8 points and a team-high 5.3 rebounds. Shaffer, the starting shooting guard, is currently fifth on the team in scoring (8.5 ppg) and leads the squad in assists (3.0 apg). The junior class is comprised of two point guards and a center. The Deacs returning starter at point guard is 5-4 Val Klopfer. All six of Klopfer s field goals this season have been beyond the arc, and she has a team-best assist-to-turnover ratio of She is backed up by classmate Adell Harris, who scored seven points on a perfect shooting night in her season debut at High Point. Junior starting center LaChina Robinson, who stands 6-4, is a continuously improving inside player who is currently averaging 7.5 points and 4.8 rebounds. Robinson is challenged in the middle by sophomore Johanna Björklund, Wake s tallest player ever at 6-5. Björklund, who provides a strong presence in the post, has seen limited action so far this season, but has notched two steals and two blocks. Two other sophomores, 6-1 Tiffani Listenbee and 6-4 LaTisha Pearson, add depth as well as rebounding and shot-blocking abilities to the Deacs Probable Deacon Lineup Pos. No. Name Ht. Cl. The Wake Forest freshman class has already played a key role in the Deacs early success. Tracy Alston, a 5-10 forward, has proven to be a tenacious defender, averaging 4.8 rebounds a game and grabbing five steals. Tonia Brown, a 5-10 guard, is a scoring threat, averaging 9.0 ppg and 2.0 three-pointers a game. 4 Climbing the Career Charts Rebounds Deacs have notched three consecutive road wins. That year the team beat UNC Greensboro, UNC Asheville and Princeton in their home gyms during a stretch from Dec. 6 to Jan. 2. The last time Wake Forest won its first three road games of the season was in It opened the year with road wins at East Tennessee State, Richmond and College of Charleston, and actually went on to win a school-record six consecutive road games during that stretch. A Tale of Two Halves... Over the first four games of the season, Wake Forest could be described as a second-half team. The Deacs have outscored their opponents 160 to 119 in the final 20 minutes of play. While they have also outscored them in the first half, the margin is decidedly narrower (147 to 141). Wake has actually been down twice at halftime (against Western Michigan and Richmond) and led High Point by just a point at the break, but visibly stepped up their offense and defense in the second halves to not only outscore, but limit its opponents scoring. The best example of this occurred Thursday at Richmond. The Deacs were down at the half, then came out and outscored the Spiders in the second period. The Deacs shot 52 percent in the second half (5-of-8) from the three-point range, and was also 75 percent from the line. On the defensive end of the floor, Richmond had three scoreless droughts of 2:54, 4:02 and 4:28 in the second half, and did not make a trip to the foul line after scoring 14-of-17 free throws in the first half. Among the ACC Leaders... In the ACC statistics released on Fri., Dec. 1, Wake s Eafton Hill ranks 18th in the league in scoring (12.8 ppg), while Olivia Dardy is 22nd (10.8). Dardy also ranks 20th in rebounding (5.3 rpg). Hill also ranks in two other categories - sixth in three-point percentage (.455) and fifth in blocks (1.25 bpg). Kristen Shaffer ranks third in assist-to-turnover ratio (1.71), Brenda Mock Kirkpatrick ranks second in field goal percentage (.632), LaChina Robinson is third in free-throw percentage (.833), while Val Klopfer is tied for ninth (.429) in three-point percentage and tied for seventh in three-pointers made (1.50 pg). Tonia Brown ranks second in threepointers made (2.0 pg). As a team, the Deacs rank in the top half of the league in eight categories scoring offense (5th), free throw percentage (4th), three-point percentage (1st), threepointers made (1st), rebounding margin (4th), blocks (5th), assists (4th), and assist-toturnover ratio (5th). Dardy Steps Up in Win Over High Point... The Deacons withstood an aggressive High Point team, defeating the Panthers at High Point last Monday night. After struggling from both the line and threepoint range in the first half, the Deacs converted on 10-of-13 free throws in the second half and wore down a smaller, less experienced Panther team for the eight-point victory. Senior Olivia Dardy, one of Wake s first players off the bench, scored a teamhigh 15 points on 6-of-7 shooting. It was her highest scoring output since a 16-point effort versus UNC on Jan. 2, Junior LaChina Robinson used her height advantage in the post to score 12 points and pull down five rebounds. Freshman Eafton Hill had a solid night, scoring seven points and grabbing a team-high six boards (all defensive). High Point Homecoming for Harris... Another player who stepped up in the win at High Point was junior point guard Adell Harris and she had some motivation to do so. Harris hails from High Point, and was a graduate of T. Wingate Andrews High School. The former Guilford County Player of the Year saw her first action of the season for the Deacs, playing 16 minutes and scoring seven points, two rebounds, an assist and a steal. She was perfect from the field, hitting 2-of-2 field goals (including a threepointer) and nailing two free throws to give the Deacs a seven-point lead in the waning seconds of the game. Second-Half Rally Falls Short Versus Hot-Shooting WMU... The Wake Forest women s basketball team overcame a 14-point halftime deficit, but came up just short at the buzzer in its home opener, dropping a decision to the Western Michigan Broncos in front of a crowd of 812 at Lawrence Joel Coliseum. With the game tied at 10 early in the first half, the Broncos went on a 12-point run, sparked by the three-point shooting of guards Sarah Hurrle and Lisa Bruwer. The duo both finished the game with seven three pointers (Hurrle 7-of-11, Bruwer 7-of13), tying with each other for a new Joel Coliseum record in a women s basketball game. Down at the break, the Demon Deacons chipped away at the Bronco lead in the second half. Brenda Mock Kirkpatrick provided a second-half offensive spark, hitting 3-of-3 from three-point range (she had just 10 career three-pointers entering the game). The Deacs were down by two with 22 seconds remaining when Hurrle missed the front end of a 1-and-1 free throw and Kirkpatrick grabbed the rebound. A shot by senior Olivia Dardy in the paint just missed the rim as the Broncos held on for a victory. Five Deacons finished with double-figure scoring, including Kirkpatrick with a team-high 16 points. She also had seven rebounds and dished a team-high six assists. Eafton Hill added 13 points, Dardy had 11, and Kristen Shaffer and LaChina Robinson each contributed 10. Tracy Alston pulled down a team-high eight rebounds. Deacons Win Season Opener at Appalachian State... The Wake Forest women's basketball team opened the campaign with a dominating victory over the Appalachian State Mountaineers on Nov. 19. The contest, which took place in the brand new Holmes Convocation Center, was the first women s basketball game in the facility. After ASU jumped out to a 7-4 lead, freshman Eafton Hill, playing in front of a hometown crowd which included her former Watauga High School teammates, hit a three-pointer which tied the game. The Deacs then went on a 14-5 scoring run and never relinquished the lead. An aggressive defense by Wake Forest forced 17 Mountaineer first-half turnovers which resulted in 19 points for the Deacs. Wake had a balanced attack as every player in uniform played at least 10 minutes, with all 12 players scoring at least two points. Three Deacons posted doublefigures in scoring, as senior Kristen Shaffer led the team with 14 points. Senior Brenda Mock Kirkpatrick added 12, while freshman Tonia Brown contributed 10 points. Sophomore Tiffani Listenbee nearly notched a double-double with nine points and a team-high nine rebounds in 14 minutes of action. Starting point guard Val Klopfer dished seven assists, and hit two three-pointers for six points. As a team the Deacs shot 42 percent for the game, including 55 percent from beyond the arc. WFU connected well from the free throw line, going a perfect 9-of-9 in the first half and 15-of-19 for the game (79 percent). The Deacs outrebounded Appalachian State 46 to 40, and the defense recorded 14 steals and blocked three shots while limiting the Mountaineers to 29 percent shooting. Rookie Enjoys Early Homecoming... Freshman Eafton Hill made her collegiate debut in a familiar place her hometown of Boone, NC. Hill earned the starting nod for the Deacs in their season opener at Appalachian State. The 6-1 forward has ties to ASU, as her sister attends school there while her mother works at the University. Hill had a large cheering section at the game, including her former Watauga High School teammates. She finished the game with nine points, three rebounds and an assist. WFU in Season Openers... With the victory over Appalachian State, Wake Forest improves to 21-9 in season openers. It was the biggest season-opening win for the Deacs since the season, when they defeated East Tennessee State by 25 points (76-51). The Injury Report... One Deacon expected to make a big impact this season was senior shooting guard Janae Whiteside. After leading the team in scoring with 22 points, including four three-pointers, in the first exhibition game, Whiteside injured her right knee just four minutes into the second exhibition on Nov. 10. An MRI revealed ligament damage in addition to an already-diagnosed dislocated kneecap, which will keep her sidelined for the season.
