As one of four teams (along with Cleveland State, Stanford and Virginia) to host two games in their home arenas, UK made the most of its invitation.

Once there, the team defeated Cleveland State and then faced Stanford in the championship game.

3 2009 CANCUN CHALLENGE CHAMPIONS The early portion of Kentucky s schedule included a trip to Cancun, Mexico, for the Cancun Challenge, where the Cats enjoyed some fun in the sun, basketball and a championship. entucky was selected as one of eight teams to participate in the 2009 Cancun Challenge. As one of four teams (along with Cleveland State, Stanford and Virginia) to host two games in their home arenas, UK made the most of its invitation. After dispatching Sam Houston State and Rider, the Cats journeyed to Cancun, Mexico, where they stayed and played (in a converted ballroom) their games in the all-inclusive Moon Palace Resort. Once there, the team defeated Cleveland State and then faced Stanford in the championship game. Behind 23 points from freshman sensation John Wall, including clutch shots in the final minute that sent the game to overtime, No. 5 Kentucky closed with an eight-point run for a victory over gritty Stanford. In addition to being a nice early season getaway, the trip helped set the tone for a season filled with extraordinary accomplishments. 5 MAKING A BIG SPLASH IN THE BIG APPLE Playing in front of a crowd of 15,874 in the second game of a double-header at Madison Square Garden, fourth-ranked Kentucky edged UConn in the DirecTV SEC/Big East Invitational. Playing for the first time in Madison Square Garden and only his ninth game at Kentucky, highly-touted freshman guard John Wall proved to be as good as advertised in leading the Wildcats to a victory over UConn in the DirecTV SEC/Big East Invitational. Wall put Kentucky ahead for good on a threepoint play when he was fouled hard as he drove to the basket - making it with 30 seconds left. He scored a season-high 25 points, including 12 of his team s last 15, and the fourth-ranked Wildcats beat No. 14 Connecticut Patrick Patterson had 16 points and DeMarcus Cousins added 10 points and 10 rebounds. The SEC-Big East Invitational was a star-studded affair with numerous celebrities among the crowd in Madison Square Garden. None other than Dick Vitale called the game for ESPN. 82

The Wildcats went a perfect 18-0 at home, tying the Rupp Arena mark for home wins in a season. Kentucky finished with a 14-2 record en route to its 44th SEC regular season championship and won the school s 26th SEC Tournament championship. Freshman John Wall led Kentucky in scoring with a 16.6 ppg average to along with a school single season record, 241 assists. Wall was awarded the Adolph Rupp Trophy as National Player of the Year, the first player in the illustrious history of the UK basketball program to receive any one of the primary national player of the year awards. Fellow freshman DeMarcus Cousins was second on the team in scoring, averaging 15.1 ppg while posting a team-best 9.8 rpg average, destroying the UK freshman reboundingrecord. ROAD WARRIORS Kentucky was tough on the road, posting a 7-2 mark in true road games including their first true win over Indiana (above). In his inaugural season as head coach of the Wildcats, John Calipari posted his fifth-straight 30-win season, the only coach in NCAA Division I history to do so. He received the Adolph Rupp Cup, which is awarded to the National Coach of the Year, the first time in the 38-year history of the award that a UK coach has won the award. 96

It was the best start by the Wildcats since 1966 and the best start by a first-year Kentucky coach in school history. It was the third time in Calipari s college coaching career that he had the nation s last undefeated team. PERFECT AT HOME Kentucky went 18-0 at home in 2010, including a victory over 12th-ranked Tennessee in Rupp Arena last February (above).
