ESPN2 BOB PICOZZI (PXP) ROSALYN GOLD-ONWUDE (ANALYST) SIMULCAST ON ESPN3 DANCIN IN QUEENS: NO. 10 SEED FACES NO. 7 SEED DAYTON IN NCAA TOURNAMENT AT CARNESECCA ARENA For the fourth-straight season, St. John s earned an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament as the Red Storm (18-12) was picked to face Dayton as the No. 10 seed in the NCAA Championship First Round on the Red Storm s home court in Carnesecca Arena. The Red Storm will play the No. 7 seeded Flyers, the Atlantic 10 Regular Season Champions on Sunday, March 24 in a 2:30 p.m. (approx.) tip off on ESPN2. Bob Picozzi and Rosalyn Gold- Onwude are on the call. Sunday s NCAA First Round meeting will be the third between the Red Storm and the Flyers, who last played each other on Dec. 21, St. John s won It will be St. John s first game against an A-10 school this season. Dayton won the first meeting on Dec. 29, 1984, 91-77, also at a neutral site. The winner of the St. John s-dayton match up will face either No. 2 Kentucky (27-5) or No. 15 Navy (21-11), who will play each other in a 12:05 tip on Sunday, preceding the Red Storm-Dayton game. The Wildcats and Midshipmen contest will be aired on ESPNU. The Second Round game is slated for 7 p.m. on Tuesday, March 26 on ESPN2. All three games will be simulcast on ESPN3 via WatchESPN.com. The winner of the Second Round game will move on to the Bridgeport Regional for the Sweet 16 on Saturday, March 30. It will be first-year head coach Joe Tartamella s first bid to the NCAA Tournament, but fifth trip with the program, as he was associate head coach for the last three years and assistant in The season marks St. John s eighth appearance in the NCAA Tournament with its first in Overall St. John s has a record of 6-7 in the Big Dance and has made it to the Second Round five times (1988, 2006, 2010, 2011 and 2012). The BIG EAST had eight teams receive bids to the Big Dance with two No. 1 seeds (Notre Dame, Connecticut), No. 5 seed Louisville, No. 7 seed Syracuse, No. 9 seed Villanova and three No. 10 seeds with St. John s, DePaul and USF. 2 WOMEN S BASKETBALL GAME NOTES MEDIA POLICIES All media requests for interviews with St. John s women s basketball players and coaches should be directed to Assitant Director of Athletic Communications, Kristin Quinn, 24 hours in advance. Calling players at home or on cell phones without permission from the St. John s Athletic Communications office will not be tolerated. The players dorms, training room and weight room are also off limits. The St. John s locker room is closed to the media following the game. The team is allowed the customary 10-minute cooling off period and time with the coaching staff to meet with the team after each game. The St. John s Athletic Communications staff will secure coach and student-athletes for the interview room. Coach Joe Tartamella will enter with student-athletes, unless detained by radio/television interviews. Coach and student-athletes will complete interviews and be available for one-on-ones. The only pregame interviews allowed on game days will be for St. John s radio, and local or national television productions. No game day interviews will be allowed unless specifically requested for televised games. CREDENTIAL REQUESTS Credential requests must be made by sports editors or sports directors on official letterhead no later than five days prior to an event. RADIO POLICY St. John s has permanent phone lines available to visiting radio stations at $100 per line. Arrangements for phone lines must be made through the Athletic Communications office. All radio stations will be limited to three working credentials on press row. The fee for phone lines must be paid in advance of the game. Make check payable to St. John s University. PHOTOGRAPHY REGULATIONS All photographers and camera operators must remain seated in baseline photo areas, as per NCAA regulations. Locations will be assigned for more crowded games. Season media credentials are issued to those outlets which cover St. John s Athletics on a regular basis. They do not guarantee working space in the media work area. With the exception of Red Storm beat reporters covering the team on a regular basis and producing regular reports, all passes are approved and issued on a game-by-game basis. Passes are not transferable and are subject to immediate revocation if transferred to non-working members of a media outlet. The Red Storm went 8-2 in its last regularseason games, with one of the losses a close one to No. 3 Connecticut, (Feb. 2). The Red Storm boasts a strength of schedule of 8 according to the March 18 NCAA RPI release with a non-conference SOS of 3. St. John s was also No. 39 in the NCAA s RPI report. The BIG EAST Conference has a SOS of a four. St. John s received the No. 5 seed in the BIG EAST Tournament and had a bye to the second round. The Red Storm went 1-1 in the BIG EAST s postseason tournament, defeating No. 12 seed Seton Hall, 51-45; but lost in the Quarterfinals to No. 4 seed Louisville, Since Feb. 2, the Red Storm has risen in NCAA RPI ratings from the 60 s to as high as 30 and is currently 39. St. John s finished the regular season playing three games in five days; two within 48 hours as the Red Storm played at 9 p.m. on Saturday at Seton Hall. Before the March 2, 60-51, loss at Seton Hall, St. John s was riding a season-high six-game winning streak going into Saturday s game at Seton Hall. On Wednesday, Feb. 27, the Red Storm defeated Villanova in a gritty, 52-49, road victory, where St. John s came back from a fourpoint deficit and won the game on free throws. On Monday, March 4, St. John s rebounded from the Saturday loss and defeated DePaul handily, The win over DePaul was the second for St. John s over a team in the RPI top 25. DePaul was rated No. 23 in the March 4 NCAA RPI rankings. St. John s also defeated Villanova on Feb. 27 on the road. At the time, the Wildcats boasted an RPI of 22. As of the March 10 RPI rankings, DePaul was a 26 and Villanova was a 27. Since defeating Marquette on the road (Feb. 20, 67-61), the first time in program-history, St. John s began receiving votes in the USA Today/Coaches Poll. As of the March 12 Poll, St. John s is receiving three votes. Against teams in the current RPI top 25, St. John s has lost three of the seven games in three points or less; five of the seven in seven points or less. St. John s started the season 9-9 and lost senior starting guard Eugeneia McPherson six games in. The Red Storm turned the season around winning eight of the last 10 games. Rookie guard Aliyyah Handford stepped up to fill McPherson s vacant starting spot as she averaged 11.7 points per game in league play. Senior guard Shenneika Smith led the Red Storm in scoring all season with a career-best 16.7 points per game. The Red Storm went 1-1 in the BIG EAST s postseason tournament, defeating No. 12 seed Seton Hall, 51-45; but lost in the Quarterfinals to No. 4 seed Louisville, Senior guards Shenneika Smith and Nadirah McKenith were voted to the All-BIG EAST First team, while rookie guard Aliyyah Handford received unanimous BIG EAST All-Freshman team honors. On March 19, both Smith and McKenith were voted to the Women s Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) All-Region team for the second year in a row. They are two of 12 studentathletes on the Region I team. There are 52 All-Region selections total, that make up the pool for the 10-member WBCA Division I Coaches All-America Team. In the three-year run for the Red Storm, St. John s has danced its way to the Second Round each year. Last year, the Red Storm made its first-ever appearance in the Sweet 16. St. John s lost to No. 1-seed Stanford in 2011 and No. 3-seed Florida State in 2010, both on their home courts. In 2012, the Red Storm made it out of Oklahoma, defeating No. 14 seed Creighton and No. 6 seed Oklahoma en route to facing No. 2 seed Duke in Fresno, Calif. The Red Storm watched Monday s selection show at Dave and Busters in Times Square in New York City. The team also watched the bracket unveil there in A HISTORY LESSON With the No. 10 seed, this year s appearance in the NCAA Tournament is St. John s eighth overall bid to the national postseason championship (1983, 1984, 1988, 2006, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013) is the Red Storm s fifth at-large bid to the Big Dance. St. John s won the BIG EAST Tournament Championship 1983, 84 and 88, earning the automatic berth for those years. St. John s is the only school out of the 2013 field of 64 making its eighth appearance in the Big Dance. St. John s has an overall record of 6-7 in the NCAA Tournament. The Red Storm has made it to the Second Round five times (1988, 2006, 2010, 2011, 2012) and Sweet 16 once (2012). This year is St. John s first-ever appearance as a 10-seed NCAA TOURNEY RECAP The historic women s basketball season finished up in Fresno, Calif., when the Red Storm advanced to its first-ever NCAA Tournament Sweet 16. St. John s defeated 14th-seeded Creighton, and sixth-seeded Oklahoma, in the First and Second Round of the NCAA Tournament in Norman, Okla. The Red Storm lost to No. 2 seed Duke in Fresno s Regional Semifinal at the Save Mart Center, Against Creighton, Nadirah McKenith won the game for the Red Storm with a buzzer-beating layup. Her play made SportsCenter s Top 10 as No. 7 and she was named the ESPN Capital One Player of the Game. St. John s had four players score in double figures, led by McKenith with 21 points, Da Shena Stevens with 12 and Eugeneia McPherson and Shenneika Smith adding 10 each. STJ shot 50 percent (24-for-48) from the field. Against host-school Oklahoma, St. John s was put to the test in the hostile environment of the Lloyd Noble Center. For the second game in a row, the Red Storm was led by the same four players in double-figures. This time McPherson led the way with 21 points, her fourth 20-point effort of the season. Smith added 18, while McKenith sunk 13 and Stevens helped with 10. McKenith also added seven assists and two steals to her stat line. St. John s led by five, with 2:11 left in the game, but once again Oklahoma came within one possession, after two free throws by Oklahoma s Whitney Hand. In the loss to Duke in the Regional Semifinal, Stevens led the way with 19 points and McKenith had 11 rebounds with eight assists. St. John s was given a No. 3 seed in the Tournament, its highest seeding in program history. Dayton, ranked No. 18/15 in the national polls, received an atlarge bid after finishing the regular season as the Atlantic 10 champions. The Flyers were upset in the A-10 Tournament by St. Joseph s, 54-61, in the Semifinals. The Flyers have an RPI of 13 and were ranked for 17-straight weeks in the national top 25 polls. Dayton set a program-record for Atlantic 10 victories at 14-0 and their 27 wins are its best since becoming a Division I program in The Flyers are one of eight teams with two or fewer losses on the season, joining Baylor, Notre Dame, Stanford, Duke, Green Bay, Toledo and Quinnipiac. Dayton was the Atlantic 10 tournament outright, the first in program-history. At the end of the regular season, the Flyers were in the Top 20 in seven NCAA rankings. Head coach Jim Jabir, in his 10th year at Dayton, was named the A-10 Coach of the Year, Amber Deana (10.1 ppg) was A-10 Rookie of the Year and senior Olivia Applewhite (7.5 ppg, 6.1 rpg), was the A-10 s Sixth Man of the Year. Sophomore Andrea Hoover, who leads the Flyers in scoring with 12.2 ppg, was named First Team All-Atlantic 10 and was one of five players selected to the All-Academic Tea. Sophomore Ally Malott, the Flyers second leading scorer (10.8 ppg) was named to the second team and senior Sam MacKay (10.3 ppg) was named third team All-A-10. KENTUCKY: The top team in the Queens pod as the No. 2 seed, the Wildcats also received an atlarge bid to the NCAA Tournament with a 27-5 overall record and 13-3 SEC slate. The berth is Kentucky s 10th overall appearance in the Big Dance with the Wildcats boasting a 12-9 record in the tournament. It is also Kentucky s fourth-consecutive trip to the dance. Kentucky, a No. 2 seed, is ranked No. 7 in both top 25 polls and has the eighth-best RPI in the country. The Wildcats were picked to finish first in the SEC preseason poll. However, Texas A&M earned the auto-bid after delivering Kentucky a loss in the SEC title game. Senior guard A dia Mathies leads the Wildcats in scoring with an average of 15.9 points per game. In league action, Mathies averaged 18.2 ppg, which helped her earn First Team All-SEC honors and shared Co-Player of the Year honors with Meighan Simmons of Tennessee. Along with Mathies, teammate DeNesha Stallworth, a junior center, also earned SEC first team accolades. Stallworth led the team in rebounding with 5.9 per game. During the regular season, the Wildcats only losses were to Baylor, South Carolina, Georgia and LSU. NAVY: The Midshipmen (21-11) received an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament as winners of the Patriot League is both Navy s third-straight and third-overall appearance in the Big Dance. Navy has yet to win again in the Tournament after losing in the first round in both 2011 and Navy won three-straight games in the Patriot League Tournament, after losing its final regular season game at Bucknell, Navy has three players who average double figures, led by Jade Geif with 13.1 points per game and helped by Alix Membreno with 11.4 ppg and Kara Pollinger with 10.8 ppg. Geif, a junior forward, is also the Midshipmen s leading rebounder with 7.9 per game. Membreno was named the MVP of the Patriot League Tournament. Geif received Patriot League first team honors for the second-straight season. WBCA ALL-AMERICA CANDIDATE AWARDS ANNOUNCED On Tuesday, March 19, St. John s senior guards Nadirah McKenith and Shenneika Smith were announced to the Women s Basketball Coaches Association All-Region Team for the second-consecutive year. McKenith and Smith make up a 52-person Regional pool, from which the WBCA committee will select 10 for WBCA All-America honors. The seniors are two of 12 Regional All-Americans from a 12-person Region I team, made up of 11 players from the BIG EAST Conference. The only non-big EAST student-athlete on the team is Niveen Rasheed from Princeton. There are seven seniors on the Region I list. The 2013 WBCA Division I Coaches All-America Team will be announced at 2:10 p.m., on Saturday, April 6 during the NCAA Women s Final Four Super Saturday Festivities in New Orleans Arena. BIG EAST CHAMPIONSHIP WRAP UP St. John s received a bye to the second round of the 2013 BIG EAST Championship as the Red Storm was the No. 5 seed after finishing the BIG EAST season tied for third in the conference and an 11-5 league record. In the Second Round, St. John s was able to chase its demons away and get revenge on No. 12 seed Seton Hall with a victory over the Pirates. Seton Hall had defeated St. John s on March 2, in South Orange, N.J., ending the Red Storm s six-game winning streak and contributing to St. John s not earning the double-bye in the Championship. The Pirates opened the game on a 9-4 run as St. John s called its first timeout 3:44 into the contest. St. John s led at the intermission with 11 points off second-chance point and 15 off Seton Hall turnovers. St. John s sophomore Amber Thompson had 14 points and 12 rebounds for her fourth double-double of the season. Junior Briana Brown made up the minutes and points that senior guard Nadirah McKenith lacked due to limited minutes with a knee injury. Smith also played limited minutes as she recorded her fourth foul with nine minutes left in the second period. In the Quarterfinals against No. 13/15 Louisville, St. John s rallied from a 15-2 deficit to lead at halftime. However, STJ couldn t pull off the upset as the Cardinals, led by Sara Hammond s 22 points and 11 rebounds defeated the Red Storm, STJ was down by just four, 54-50, with 3:11 to play. However, Louisville scored the next four points to put the game away. Smith scored a team-best 19 points. She went 8-for-8 from the foul line, and the team shot 22-for-26 overall from the stripe. Senior guard Nadirah McKenith scored 18 points. Smith averaged 17.5 points per game during the league tournament. Thompson averaged a near double-double with 9.5 points and 10.0 boards per game. MORE POSTSEASON AWARDS FOR RED STORM On Thursday, March 7, the league officials announced that St. John s had three student-athletes honored by the BIG EAST coaches for their accomplishments all season. Senior guards Shenneika Smith and Nadirah McKenith were voted to the 2013 BIG EAST first team; while rookie guard Aliyyah Handford was unanimously selected to the BIG EAST all-freshman team. It was Smith s second-straight time on the first team. St. John s was only one of three teams to have multiple honorees on the first team. Handford, a three-time BIG EAST Freshman of the Week, is one of four unanimous selections to the all-freshman team. She is St. John s second unanimous honoree in four years, Smith was also a unanimous vote. FIRST TIME COACHING IN NCAA TOURNAMENT Joe Tartamella made is making his first appearance as head coach in the NCAA Tournament on Sunday. He has been the associate head coach in St. John s last three trips and an assistant coach in He is (.600), after making his coaching debut at the WBI Tip Off Invitational on Nov Tartamella earned his first-career coaching victory, 72-54, vs. UCF (Nov. 11). He earned his firstcareer BIG EAST victory at Rutgers on Jan. 6, Tartamella and the Red Storm went 1-1 in his first-ever BIG EAST Championship appearance. Tartamella, a Long Island, N.Y., native, has been part of the Red Storm coaching staff for the past nine years, moving up the ranks from graduate assistant to assistant coach to associate head coach; before he was hired as the eighth head coach in program history in April. He has been an integral part of four previous NCAA Tournaments appearances, with an undefeated record in the First Round, including St. John s run to its first-ever NCAA Sweet 16 in SENIOR SEND OFF On Monday, March 4, St. John s honored the accomplishments of the Senior Class of 2013: Nadirah McKenith, Shenneika Smith, Mary Nwachukwu and managers Jonathan Ochoa, Alfred Lamour and Chinyere Ekwelum. Coming in, the recruiting class was ranked No. 10 in the nation by ESPN and No. 1 in the BIG EAST, St. John s highest-ever recruiting class. Since stepping foot on the court at Carnesecca Arena, the class has brought St. John s into the national spotlight with three-straight NCAA Tournaments, its first-ever Sweet 16 in 2012 and the highest rankings in the top 25 polls. The senior class helped St. John s break the record in wins (25) in as rookies in 2010, then break the record for BIG EAST wins in 2012 (13). As juniors, they conjured up national headlines as the team defeated UConn at Gampel, putting an end to the Huskies 99-game home-winning streak. Outside of BIG EAST play, the seniors have traveled to California, twice, Oklahoma, Florida, Arkansas, Kansas and the Bahamas. STORMTRACKER St. John s senior guard Shenneika Smith has led the Red Storm in scoring all season. She averages a career-best 16.7 points per game for the season. Smith also leads the team in rebounding with 6.8 per game. She has had point efforts this season, including the 24-point performance against DePaul in the regular-season finale. Senior point guard Nadirah McKenith is second in scoring with 12.9 points per game with 5.34 assists per game for the season. McKenith has led the Red Storm in scoring seven times. She was named to the BIG EAST Honor Roll on Feb. 25. Both Smith and McKenith were All-BIG EAST first team honorees. BIG EAST All-Freshman team unanimous selection Aliyyah Handford was third on the team in scoring during BIG EAST play with 11.7 points per game, 9.2 ppg overall. She led all BIG EAST freshmen in scoring and total points in conference action. HANDFORD LEADS BIG EAST ROOKIES During conference play, Red Storm rookie guard Aliyyah Handford led all BIG EAST freshmen in total points (187) and scoring (11.7 ppg), helping her become one of the four unanimous selections to the All-BIG EAST Freshman team. She was one of just three freshman to earn the weekly honor three times, the other two were Jewell Lloyd from Notre Dame (four times) and Breanna Stewart from Connecticut. Only four BIG EAST freshman this season earned the weekly honor multiple weeks. Handford tied teammate senior Shenneika Smith for the most Freshman of the Week honors of any St. John s player with three. REGULAR-SEASON FINALE: STJ 67, DEPAUL 54 St. John s finished the regular season on a winning note, defeating DePaul, 67-54, on an emotional night where the Red Storm celebrated the careers of its impactful senior leaders, Shenneika Smith, Nadirah McKenith and Mary Nwachukwu, as well as senior managers Jonathan Ochoa, Alfred Lamour and Chinyere Ekwelum. Smith led the scorers with 24 points, her 11th 20-point game of the season. But it was the bench spark of sophomore Amber Thompson, who finished the game with a career-high in scoring (20 points) and tied her career-high in rebounds (16 points), who provided the Red Storm with the energy it needed for the win. McKenith finished the game with seven points, five assists and two rebounds. Nwachukwu with four points, two assists, two blocks and a steal. Smith also added seven rebounds. With the win, St. John s finishes the regular season, 17-11, 11-5 in the BIG EAST. And with the Louisville loss tonight, the Red Storm will have the No. 5 seed in the upcoming BIG EAST Tournament. DePaul finished the regular season, 20-10, 9-7 in the BIG EAST. The win was also a good RPI win for the Red Storm, as DePaul was No. 23 in the NCAA RPI on Monday. 7 NADIRAH ON THE BIG EAST HONOR ROLL (FEB. 25) Senior point guard Nadirah McKenith earned a spot on the Week 16 BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll on Monday, Feb. 25 after pacing the Red Storm during the Red Storm with 18.5 points and 6.0 assists per game. McKenith, played an integral role during St. John s five-game winning streak and push towards the postseason. In the wins at Marquette (Feb. 20) and against Rutgers (Feb. 23), McKenith continued to boost her scoring average as she contributed 16 points against the Golden Eagles and 21 vs. her home-state team, the Scarlet Knights. The honor roll nod was McKenith s first weekly honor of the season. A Naismith Early Season Watch List candidate and preseason All-BIG EAST selection, McKenith was also the league s Player of the Week for the same week last year (Feb. 20, 2012). In , she was also Freshman of the Week on Feb. 15. As of the March 18 NCAA statistical rankings, McKenith ranks 34th in the NCAA in assists per game. After averaging 1.4 ppg over her first two seasons of play, Brown is fourth on the team in scoring with 8.8 points per game. She has increased her average playing time from 7.7 minutes per game in to 31.6 mpg as a junior. Brown has scored in double figures 13 times this season, six times in the past eight games. In the BIG EAST Tournament, Brown helped lead St. John s to a win over Seton Hall in the Second Round with a 12-point second half performance, adding seven rebounds and one assist. Brown had a career opening weekend at the WBI Tip Off Invitational in Daytona Beach, Fla. The Norwalk, Conn., native posted backto-back double-doubles, and reached career numbers in points (17 vs. Texas (Nov. 9)), rebounds (10 2x, vs. UCF (Nov. 11) and vs. Texas (Nov. 9)) and minutes played (38 vs. Texas). She shot 3-for-4 vs. the Longhorns also setting a career-mark. She led St. John s in scoring against Texas, marking on the second time in her three-year career she has done so. The season-opener against Texas was the first time Brown was in the starting lineup. MCKENITH THE ALL-TIME ASSIST RECORD-HOLDER At then-no. 13/12 Louisville on Jan. 27, senior point guard Nadirah McKenith broke St. John s all-time career assists record. McKenith had eight assists in the game, surpassing the record by two. The previous record was held by Janet Roos ( ) who had set the mark at 530. McKenith broke the record on an assist to Shenneika Smith who went in through the paint for a layup to give St. John s a lead over Louisville with 7:19 left. Going into her senior season, McKenith averaged assists/year. Through 28 games played in , McKenith has 147 assists. She currently has 595 assists for her career as the record-holder. She averages 10.9 ppg and 5.3 rpg during that span and has scored in the double-figures in nine of the last 10 games WOMEN S BASKETBALL GAME NOTES The starting line up of Nadirah McKenith, Briana Brown, who had started in 14-straight games and averaged 32.0 minutes per game before sitting out against Pitt (Jan. 16) and Notre Dame (Jan. 20) with concussion-like symptoms, Handford, Shenneika Smith and Mary Nwachukwu is 12-5, while the alternate line up of McKenith, Brown, Handford, Smith and sophomore Amber Thompson is 1-1. With senior Eugeneia McPherson in the lineup, the Red Storm was 4-1. RECORD BOOK RE-WRITE Seniors Shenneika Smith and Nadirah McKenith have steadily been climbing up the St. John s record books this season. Smith is making her way toward the top of the all-time scoring record. Smith has 1,709 career points going into Sunday s game and is No. 4 all-time. Her next marker is Cozette Ballentine ( ) who scored 1,739 points over her career. Meanwhile, she is also No. 4 in career field goals with 696. Ballentine is also No. 3 in that category with 741 for her career. Also No. 4 all-time in rebounding (778) and No. 3 in career blocks (151), Smith has also snuck her way into the all-time steals top 10. She has 197 and is seventh. Smith is also No. 8 in free throws (252). Meanwhile, McKenith, already the all-time assists record-holder, has also been steadily moving up the all-time scoring list (No. 13-1,276) and rebounding chart (No ). She is also No. 2 in steals (264), No. 2 in free throws (378) and No. 6 in free throw percentage (.751). MCKENITH AMONG ACTIVE NCAA CAREER LEADERS According to Feb. 25th data, senior guard Nadirah McKenith s then- 570 career assists ranked seventh overall among players in all three divisions of the NCAA. McKenith s career assist percentage per game of 4.79 ranks 21st overall and 14th among Division I players. She also ranked 47th in free throws (353). FRESHMAN EFFORT AGAINST CINCINNATI Against Cincinnati, all four freshman saw ample action on the court. The foursome of Aliyyah Handford, Cedrica Gibson, Sandra Udobi and Ashley Perez combined for 29 points of the team s 75, 39 percent. Handford shot 7-for-13 from the field for 14 points. 8 WOMEN S BASKETBALL GAME NOTES CAREER-DAY FOR GUARDS AT PROVIDENCE Junior guard Briana Brown had a career-scoring day at Providence with 19 points. She shot 5-for-12 from the field and 7-for-8 from the free throw line, also a career-best. Brown also had a career day in steals with three. Rookie guard Aliyyah Handford had a career day in assists with six. Both Brown and Handford were recognized by the BIG EAST on Feb. 4 as Brown was placed on the Honor Roll and Handford earned Rookie of the Week honors. TARTAMELLA ADDS PAIR OF ACC TRANSFERS FOR On Tuesday, head coach Joe Tartamella announced that Danaejah Grant and Selina Archer will be joining the Red Storm in the 2013 spring semester. Grant and Archer will be eligible to play in the Spring of Grant, a top 100 recruit, No. 65 overall and No. 25 at her position, was a starting guard for the Clemson Tigers this year as a freshman. A native of Piscataway, N.J., she led the Tigers in scoring with 13.4 ppg and added 5.9 rpg before choosing to transfer. Archer, also a former top 100 recruit, she was ranked as high as No. 49 overall. Coming out of East Ridge High School in Clermont, Fla., Archer played the season as a freshman forward with the Miami Hurricanes, helping Miami to an NCAA Tournament berth. KEY S GAME Junior guard Keylantra Langley had a breakout game against Seton Hall, scoring a career-best 16 points on a career-high seven field goals (7-for-8). Langley saw 22 minutes of action and was a spark off the bench for the Red Storm. For her efforts, Langley started the following game against Pitt (Jan. 16), scored eight points and had six rebounds. BEST LEAGUE START FOR The 3-0 start to BIG EAST play this season was the best start for St. John s since the season, when St. John s defeated Boston College, Syracuse and Connecticut to be 3-0 in the conference. During the season, St. John s lost to Providence to end the streak on Jan. 28. In , St. John s defeated Rutgers on the road, Seton Hall at Madison Square Garden and Pittsburgh in Queens. The streak was ended at then-no. 2/3 Notre Dame on Jan. 20. STIFLIN D The Pittsburgh Panthers 11 points in the first half (Jan. 16) were the lowest an opponent has scored in a half this season. For the game, St. John s only allowed Pitt to score a season-low 32 points on 12 field goals (12-for-59, 20.3 percent). Previously, St. John s had held the NJIT Highlanders 13 points in the first half (Dec. 28). The Red Storm held Pitt to just four field goals in the first half, (4-for-28, 14.3 percent), also a seasonlow. Against NJIT, STJ held the Highlanders to six field goals in the first period. Against Delaware (Jan. 2), St. John s once again held its opponent to just six field goals in a half, this time in the second period. Once again at Rutgers (Jan. 6), St. John s held the Scarlet Knights to 14 points in the first half, the second-lowest for the Scarlet Knights to date. CLEANING THE BOARDS Against NJIT, the Red Storm outrebounded the Highlanders 52-28, a +24 rebounding margin, the highest this season and the highest since the season when St. John s outrebounded Columbia, (+26) on Nov. 19. That same season, St. John s also outrebounded Arkansas State, (+21) (Nov. 22). Against Providence (Jan. 30), STJ outrebounded the Friars, It was the highest rebounding margin in BIG EAST play for St. John s. JERSEY GIRLS Senior guard Nadirah McKenith, sophomore forward Amber Thompson and rookie guard Aliyyah Handford are all from Newark, N.J. McKenith and Thompson went to University High, while Handford went to M.X. Shabazz. All three of STJ s Jersey Girls see significant game action as starters and combined for 27 of St. John s 48 points against Rutgers (Jan. 6). The trio also combined for 30 of St. John s 72 points against Seton Hall (Jan. 12) and 27 of St. John s 43 rebounds. Against Pitt (Jan. 16), the Jersey trio accounted for 23 of St. John s 61 points. Against Providence (Jan. 30), the group combined for 42 of STJ s 65 points (64.6 percent). Currently, the three combine for 46 percent of St. John s overall scoring, 50 percent of all scoring in league play. For the Feb. 4 honor, Handford averaged 14.0 points, 5.0 assists, 6.0 rebounds and 33.5 minutes per game with a career-best 17 points against then-no. 3/2 Connecticut on Feb. 2. Handford led the Red Storm in assists for the week with 10. Along with her 17 points, Handford also recorded a career-high eight field goals in the six-point loss against the Huskies. She had a career-best six assists in the win on the road against Providence (Jan. 30). For the Feb. 18 honor, Handford averaged 15.0 points per game to pace the Red Storm in a 2-0 week, helping St. John s earn wins over South Florida and Cincinnati. Handford also recorded a team-best 7.5 rebounds per game average for the week. She shot a team-high 48.1 percent from the field (13-for-27) and added six assists, one block and one steal with just two turnovers. Handford was St. John s first BIG EAST Freshman of the Week since teammate Shenneika Smith was on Feb. 22, She ties Smith for all-time FOW honors with three. BLOCK PARTY According to the March 18 statistical rankings, St. John s is seventh in the nation in blocks with 5.8 per game, which is second behind Connecticut in the conference. Shenneika Smith leads the team in blocks and is 27th in the country. Smith is second in the BIG EAST with 2.2 per game. WELCOME TO THE 1,000-POINT CLUB Against Tennessee Tech on Dec. 15, senior point guard Nadirah McKenith became the 19th women s basketball player in St. John s history to score 1,000 points, joining former teammate Da Shena Stevens and current teammate Shenneika Smith on the prestigious list. Currently, McKenith has 1,271 points and has moved up to No. 13 overall in career-points for St. John s. Before her season-ending injury against Hartford (Nov. 25), classmate Eugeneia McPherson was also nearing the 1,000-point plateau. McPherson has 871 points to date. SMITH NAMED BIG EAST PLAYER OF THE WEEK & ECAC PLAYER OF THE WEEK Shenneika Smith was named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll on Feb. 11 after helping lead St. John s to an overtime victory against Georgetown (Feb. 9) with a season-high 26 points. It was her fifth weekly honor of the season, fourth time on the honor roll. She made the honor roll on Jan. 28 after averaging 22.0 points against two ranked BIG EAST opponents: then-no. 13/12 Louisville (Jan. 27) and RV/No. 22 Syracuse Jan. 23). Smith was voted the BIG EAST Player of the Week on Monday, Nov. 26 after averaging 21.0 points per game and 9.5 rebounds per game in a 2-0 week for the Red Storm. The following day, she was also tabbed the ECAC Player of the Week. The guard totaled seven assists, eight blocks and eight steals in the two games. On Monday, Dec. 17, she received her second weekly honor roll accolade of the year. MCPHERSON SIDELINED FOR REST OF WITH KNEE INJURY St. John s senior guard Eugeneia McPherson will sit out the remainder of the women s basketball season after injuring her right knee at Hartford (Nov. 25). McPherson had scored six points with four rebounds and two steals against the Hawks, before injuring her right knee driving to the basket with 16:41 left to play. McPherson was examined on Monday, Nov. 26 at the Hospital for Special Surgery in Manhattan by Dr. Jim Kinderknecht, who administered an MRI that revealed a tear in the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL). TARTAMELLA EARNS FIRST-CAREER COACHING VICTORY St. John s head coach Joe Tartamella earned his first-career coaching win during the opening weekend of play for the Red Storm. As the eighth head coach in St. John s history, Tartamella recorded the win, over UCF in the WBI Tip Off Invitational on Nov. 11 at the Ocean Center in Daytona Beach, Fla. Against Rutgers on Jan. 6, Tartamella killed two birds with one stone as he recorded his first-career BIG EAST win, 48-44, over the Scarlet Knights, as well as his first BIG EAST road win. SMITH, MCKENITH NAMED TO NAISMITH EARLY SEA- SON WATCH LIST Senior guards Shenneika Smith and Nadirah McKenith were two of the top 50 women s basketball players from 34 schools around the country selected to the Naismith Trophy Early Season Watch List, which was announced by the Atlanta Tipoff Club. It is the second-overall appearance for Smith on the prestigious list and the fourth-consecutive year that a player from St. John s has been represented. TARTAMELLA INKS TWO TOP 100 RECRUITS FOR CLASS OF 2017 Head coach Joe Tartamella announced the signing of top 100 recruits Jade Walker and Aaliyah Lewis to the class of The pair, both four-star recruits who play together for Ring City Elite club team, signed their NLIs on Nov. 14. Walker, a 6-1 guard/forward for DePaul Catholic in New Jersey, is ranked No. 11 at her position and No. 63 nationally by ESPN Hoop- Gurlz. As a junior for DePaul Catholic, she averaged 17.0 points, 12.0 rebounds and 3.0 blocks per game. She averaged 15.6 points per game as sophomore. Lewis, a 5-5 guard from Bishop Ford in Brooklyn, N.Y., was ranked No. 22 by ESPN HoopGurlz as a point guard and No. 96 overall. As a junior, she was named to the New York Post All-City First Team. STJ outrebounded opponents by 2.8, 41.9 to TOURNAMENT RECAP: STJ CHARTWELLS HOLIDAY CLASSIC St. John s defeated Tennessee Tech in a first-time meeting between the two schools , to advance to its fifth-straight Holiday Classic Championship game. The Red Storm lost in the Championship to then-no. 14/17 UCLA, in overtime, the Red Storm s first overtime game of the season. Rookie guard Aliyyah Handford and senior guard Shenneika Smith were named to the All-Tournament team from St. John s. Smith has been a member of the All-Tournament team all four years. Against Tennessee Tech (Dec. 15), three Red Storm players reached double figures, led by Smith with 15 points. Handford added 10 and sophomore forward Amber Thompson had a season-high of 12 points. Against the Bruins (Dec. 16), Smith was the game-high scorer with 25 points. As a team, the Red Storm blocked 12 UCLA shots, matching a season-high. Junior Mary Nwachukwu had a career-best five blocks. TOURNAMENT RECAP: GOES 1-1 IN DAYTONA St. John s went 1-1 in Daytona Beach, Fla., for the opening weekend of play at the WBI Tip Off Invitational. The Red Storm lost to Texas (Nov. 9), 60-70, as the Longhorns took advantage of a short St. John s bench and second-half spirit to overcome their halftime deficit. Junior guard Briana Brown led St. John s with 17 points, 10 rebounds. Senior guard Eugeneia McPherson had 14 points. Rookie guard Aliyyah Handford had nine points in her St. John s debut. Seniors Shenneika Smith and Jennifer Blanding did not dress for the game due to an NCAA suspension. Both seniors participated in a non-sanctioned game during the summer. St. John s rebounded from the loss with a win over UCF (Nov. 11). Three St. John s players posted double-doubles in the victory, as Smith led the way with 23 points and 12 rebounds. Nadirah McKenith nearly reached the 20-point mark with 19 points, 10 rebounds and Brown followed with her second double-double of the season with 11 points, 10 rebounds. EXHIBITION WRAP UP: STJ 99, FARMINGDALE 24 Five St. John s players reached double digits, including two freshmen in St. John s opening exhibition on Nov. 3. Red Storm rookie guard Ashley Perez paced the Red Storm with 22 points (9-for-16) in St. John s exhibition rout of Farmingdale State (DIII). Perez shot 3-for-8 from long range, playing 22 minutes as a key reserve. Senior guard Shenneika Smith added 20 points to go along with 15 rebounds, behind 9-for-15 shooting from the floor, 2-for-2 from the 3-point arc; while sophomore forward Amber Thompson added 18 points (8-for-12), senior guard Eugeneia McPherson recorded 11 points and rookie Sandra Udobi knocked in 10 points. STJ PICKED FOURTH IN BIG EAST PRESEASON COACHES POLL St. John s was picked to finish fourth in the BIG EAST Preseason Coaches Poll, after finishing the season second in the league (13-3) and making it to the NCAA Tournament Sweet 16. St. John s collected 144 points in the poll, while Connecticut was picked as the as the preseason favorite with 194 points and 12 firstplace votes. Notre Dame was picked as the conference runner-up with 182 points and the remaining three first-place votes. For the second-straight season, Louisville was the No. 3 selection with 167 points, with Rutgers (143), DePaul (138) and Syracuse (105) filling out the top seven. PRESEASON ALL-CONFERENCE HONORS FOR SMITH & MCKENITH St. John s senior guards Nadirah McKenith and Shenneika Smith were voted to the All-BIG EAST Preseason squad, announced at the league s annual Media Day on Oct. 18. It is Smith s third-consecutive time on the preseason list and the third-straight time St. John s has had two players honored. Both McKenith and Smith were also selected to the 2012 BIG EAST All- Conference teams, as Smith was named to the first team, as well as the All-Tournament team and McKenith was voted to the second team. STJ SEASON-OPENING SNAPSHOT The Red Storm returned nine letterwinners, including 2012 Preseason All-BIG EAST honorees seniors Shenneika Smith and Nadirah McKenith. St. John s also added four freshmen to the mix in Cedrica Gibson, Aliyyah Handford, Ashley Perez and Sandra Udobi. The senior class, which includes Smith and McKenith, along with Eugeneia McPherson and Jennifer Blanding has been to threestraight NCAA Tournaments and are looking to bring the fourth one home to Queens. St. John s is one of the host sites for the 2013 NCAA Tournament First and Second Rounds. The Red Storm will have an experienced lineup with Smith, McKenith, McPherson, sophomore forward Amber Thompson and redshirt junior Mary Nwachukwu as potential starters. Thompson and Nwachukwu will be looked upon to fill the void left by Da Shena Stevens to graduation in May Junior guards Briana Brown and Keylantra Langley also return; as well as sophomore guard Mallory Jones. St. John s returned 79 percent of its scoring from a team that went to the program s first-ever Sweet 16, defeated six ranked teams and posted a record. Smith led the Red Storm in scoring last year with an average of 12.5 points per game. McKenith and McPherson were both second and third on the team in scoring averaging 12.1 ppg and 11.8 ppg, respectively. WHAT A DIFFERENCE A DAY MAKES On Saturday, Sept. 29, the St. John s women s basketball team joined the rest of the St. John s students and community volunteers for the annual University Service Day. The women s basketball team went to Madeleine Jones Head Start school in Brooklyn, N.Y. to spend a few hours helping to clean and organize the building and surrounding grounds. St. John s On Saturday, Sept. 22, the women s and men s basketball teams partnered with the Pediatric Cancer Research Foundation to host the second-annual Dribble For The Cure on St. John s Queens Campus. The event welcomed more than 400 members of the St. John s Community and raised more than $25,000 for pediatric cancer research in the New York City area. The star-studded event featured special appearances from St. John s Hall of Fame coaches Lou Carnesecca and Jack Kaiser as well as 14-year NBA veteran and former New York Knick John Starks. Participants enjoyed a mini-carnival and contests with the STJ WBB players before the opening ceremonies featuring speeches by head coach Joe Tartamella, men s basketball coach Steve Lavin and PCRF officials. The St. John s women s basketball team, staff and coaches led the Dribble, a 30-minute run/walk around campus, before everyone headed to Carnesecca Arena for the closing ceremonies. STJ HIRES HEAD COACH JOE TARTAMELLA Former associate head coach Joe Tartamella was elevated to head coach in the spring, replacing Kim Barnes Arico, who accepted the University of Michigan coaching position in mid-april after 10 years as head coach at St. John s. Tartamella was officially announced at a well-attended press conference on April 27, joined by his family, friends, colleagues, fans, media and members of the St. John s women s basketball team. Regarded as one of the top up-and-coming mentors in women s basketball, Tartamella s coaching career has been forged over a nine-year tenure assisting Barnes Arico ( ). New to the St. John s sidelines this season are assistant coach Angel Elderkin and Priscilla Edwards. Elderkin brings a wealth of experience to the St. John s bench after being a part of the women s basketball staffs at LSU, Virginia, Tennessee, Siena and East Tennessee State in her 13 years of coaching experience. Edwards, who will take care of player development, as well as recruiting and opponent scouting, joins St. John s after three seasons as an assistant at St. Bonaventure, where she was also a four-year letterman. A Harlem, N.Y., native, Edwards helped the Bonnies to their first-ever NCAA Tournament berth and top 25 ranking. Returning to the bench after spending four seasons as an assistant at Providence College is assistant Jonath Nicholas. 13 NCAA TOURNEY COMES TO QUEENS Carnesecca Arena was selected as one of the host sites for the NCAA Tournament First and Second Rounds. St. John s will host the March 24 and 26 contests, with the first game starting at noon on Sunday, March 24. Tuesday s Second Round contest will begin at 7p.m. If the Red Storm has a successful season, it will be able to be the host team for its possible fourth-straight NCAA Tournament. PLAY4KAY EFFORTS With February Breast Cancer Awareness month for women s basketball. St. John s has been aiding the efforts of the WBCA in the Play4Kay fundraising efforts. As of Feb. 17, St. John s designated Play4Kay game, the Red Storm athletic department raised an estimated $3,600 in donations in support of the Play4Kay initiative. This money was raised from this afternoon s clinic and silent auction, donations, and the year-long Chuck A Duck promotion. St. John s continues to raise money for Play4Kay for the remaining men s and women s basketball home games at Carnesecca Arena. His responsibilities included recruiting and developing long and short-range strategies, administering game plans to players for execution in practice and games, and organizing and implementing pre- and post-season conditioning programs. Tartamella also served as the assistant director of career services at SUNY Maritime College. After graduating from James Madison University in 2001 with a bachelor s degree in business administration in marketing information, he coached alongside Joe Castiglie - the most successful coach in Stony Brook men s basketball history - at St. Anthony s High School. After his stint coaching boys varsity, Tartamella was hired as the graduate assistant coach for the St. John s women s basketball team. A native of St. James, N.Y., Tartamella earned his master s degree in marketing management from St. John s in A fiery competitor as a coach and athlete, Tartamella was a two-sport star at Smithtown High School, enjoying success as a basketball and baseball player. His success as a prep star resulted in numerous scholarship offers before an injury ended his promising playing career and led him to coaching. A member of the Women s Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA), Tartamella was invited guest to the Nike Villa 7 Coaches Consortium in 2010 and in The consortium was developed to bring together university athletic directors and the country s elite assistant basketball coaches in an effort to prepare coaches for the next level.
