GAME PREVIEW A New Year. A New Conference and A New Era begins as the College of Charleston (0-0) tips off the 104th season of Cougar Basketball at defending national champion and preseason No. 3-ranked Louisville (0-0) on Saturday, Nov. 9 at 1 p.m. (ET) at the KFC Yum! Center in Louisville, Ky. The game will be televised by Louisville s local affiliate WHAS-TV and will be carried nationally on ESPN3. Prior to the contest, the Cardinals will raise their 2013 NCAA Championship banner and what bigger stage could the Cougars ask for? As a program known for being Giant Killers, CofC returns 10 letterwinners from last year s squad which won 24 games and earned a postseason berth to the CBI Tournament under second-year head coach Doug Wojcik. It marked the Cougars fifth 20-win season in the last seven years filled with many memorable victories including a road upset at 2013 NIT champion and No. 21-ranked Baylor last November. With conference realignment affecting most schools around the country, both teams enter a new era as members of the Colonial Athletic Association and the American Athletic Conference respectively. The Cougars were picked to finish third in the CAA, while the Cardinals were selected as the preseason favorite in their newly-formed league. CofC boasts two preseason all-conference selections including junior big man and second teamer, Adjehi Baru, who recorded a double-double last year against Louisville with 16 points and 14 rebounds. SCOUTING LOUISVILLE Louisville will open the season with four-straight home games including back-to-back meetings with two opponents hailing from the CAA in CofC and Hofstra on Nov. 12. The Cardinals, who won a school-record 35 games in , are currently on a 16-game win streak dating back to a victory over St. John s on Feb. 14. Their preseason ranking is the second-highest in program history behind being ranked No. 2 leading into last year s NCAA title campaign. They defeated Kentucky Wesleyan (115-67) on Oct. 29 and Pikeville (90-61) in their two preseason tune-ups. U of L compiled a 15-1 record at home last year (lost to Syracuse) and is expected to have a sellout crowd on hand on Saturday. 5 NEWBERRY EXHIBITION RECAP CofC 102, Newberry 87 The Cougars used the starting lineup of freshman Joe Chealey, junior Anthony Stitt, redshirt freshman Canyon Barry, senior Willis Hall and junior Adjehi Baru. CofC has now won six-straight exhibition games since the start of the season and second consecutive under head coach Doug Wojcik. Adjehi Baru grabbed a game-high 15 rebounds including 10 in the first half of play. Last year, he brought down double-digit boards on 11 occasion and led the Southern Conference in rebounding averaging 9.8 rebounds per game which also ranked No. 77 nationally. Three newcomers and two redshirts made their unofficial CofC debuts including Chealey, Barry, redshirt sophomore David Wishon, freshman Jonathan Burroughs-Cook and freshman Terrance O Donohue. CofC notched 100-or-more points in a single game for the first time since a regular-season home victory over Georgia Southern on Jan. 10, 2009 at TD Arena. COUGAR SOUND BITES I wouldn t want it any other way. You still have to go to Louisville whether it s the first game of the season or later in December. It s their first game and our first game. To me, it s really exciting. We didn t know at the time they would be national champions when we scheduled this game with one of their assistants back in February. It just happened that way. It s a big opportunity for us. Last night on ESPN, they were talking about Kevin Ware playing and playing in his first game against the College of Charleston on Saturday. That s great publicity for us. We wouldn t have this excitement for our first game, if we had played against someone else. What a great way for our young guys to start their careers at College of Charleston. CofC Head Coach Doug Wojcik on playing defending national champion Louisville on its NCAA banner ceremony day in the first game of the season We can learn from our miscues from last year. We had 27 turnovers in that game. If we can clean up the turnovers that will give us a much better chance to be successful this year. You can t simulate what they will exactly do, but you can try. We have to make shots, especially anytime you play someone that is ranked on their home floor. We made shots last year on the road at Baylor. For Saturday, I m not only concerned about minimizing turnovers, but getting shots, taking shots and converting those shots. Wojcik on learning from last year s home loss to Louisville We learned a lot last year, but we are a different team this year. We have been working in practice on new plays and how they will defend us. Last year, we thought they were going to play us man-to-man, but we were surprised they played us zone the entire game. We know they will press us a lot and we have to take care of the ball. We will be more prepared for them this year. We have to embrace it and just play hard and try to come back with a win. Junior Forward Adjehi Baru on playing defending national champion Louisville on the road in the season opener and moving on from last year s disappointing loss at home You try to forget about that night and move forward. But, then you also go back and watch the film and try to see what your mistakes were and see what you can do better the next time around. Everyone is prepared for Saturday. We have watched a lot of film and we have a good game plan. They had good guard play last year with Peyton Siva and Russ Smith and a dominant big man in the middle. Last year, they switched up the defense. We prepared all week for man and then they went match-up zone. We didn t have the plays in place to execute. This year, they will be big, fast and strong again. Our scout team has done a good job of preparing us. Junior Guard Anthony Stitt on moving past the loss from Louisville last year and heading into a new year with a new team WEEKLY SCHEDULE :00 p.m. TD Arena Media 3:30 p.m. 4:00 p.m. TD Arena GAME DAY vs. Charlotte 7:00 p.m. TD Arena Media 3:30 p.m. 4:00 p.m. TD Arena Travel To Louisville GAME DAY at #3/3 Louisville 1:00 p.m. KFC Yum!
