EIU just missed a chance for an upset big at Big East member Marquette on Monday falling in overtime as the Panthers are 2-4 on the season. All four losses have been on the road. Bradley enters the game at 6-1 following a Saturday night win over Georgia Southern. The Braves are 4-0 at home and off to their best start since the season. STARKS BIG NIGHT AT MARQUETTE Junior Jajuan Starks is the only Eastern Illinois player to score in double figures in all six games this season as he leads the Panthers at 16.8 points per game to rank sixth in the OVC. Starks had his biggest night in a Panthers uniform at Marquette scoring 27 points on 9-of-13 shooting from the field. He is averaging 19.3 points and shooting 68 percent from the field in the Panthers last three games. Starks ranks 9th in the OVC in FG percentage and 10th in rebounding. LEWIS CHASING ELITE GROUP Senior point guard Terrell Lewis is closing in on a pair of career milestones as the Panthers travel to Bradley. Lewis needs seven points to become the 37th player in EIU school history with 1,000 points. Already the EIU career leader in assists, he needs six to reach 500 for his career. When Lewis reaches both of those milestones he will become only the 9th player in Ohio Valley Conference history to have accomplished both feats. In addition Lewis ranks fifth on the Panthers career 3-pointers made list with 205. He needs four to move into a tie for 4th. He was a long time assistant coach at the NCAA Division I level and served as the interim head coach at UNLV to complete the 2004 season posting a 6-4 record and taking the team to the finals of the Mountain West Conference Tournament along with an NIT appearance. In 2001 Spoonhour was named the National Junior College Coach of the Year leading Wabash Valley College to the NJCAA National Championship with a 36-1 record. He is the son of the late legendary coach Charlie Spoonhour. Spoonhour played basketball at Pittsburg State earning his degree in He was an honorable mention All-Conference selection. He has assistant coaching stops at Central Missouri, Saint Louis, UNLV, Missouri and Texas San Antonio. Spoonhour s career mark is ; at the NCAA Division I level. His EIU record is with an OVC mark of Spoonhour led the program to its first NCAA Division I postseason win on March 17, 2015 with a win at Oakland in the CIT. LAST TIME OUT Marquette hit a pair of free throws with nine seconds remaining in regulation in force overtime as the Golden Eagles held off Eastern Illinois, The Panthers had five players score in double figures and shot 50 percent from the field but could not pull off the upset on the road. Jajuan Starks scored a team high 27 points for EIU. SCOUTING BRADLEY Brian Wardle is in his third season as the head coach at Bradley. This year the Braves are off to a 6-1 start, the best for the program since the season and the third time Bradley has been 6-1 in the last 32 years. Bradley has three players - Darrell Brown (13.1), Nate Kennell (10.3) and Donte Thomas (10.3) - all averaging in double figures. The Braves have three players all averaging just over seven rebounds per game as Bradley has a plus 10.3 rebounding margin for the season. Defensively they are holding opponents to 35.8 percent shooting and 58.3 points per game. SERIES INFORMATION This will be the 11th meeting between Eastern Illinois and Bradley. Bradley holds a 6-4 all-time series lead after winning in overtime last year at Lantz Arena. This will be only the fourth meeting between the two schools in EIU s Division I history with Bradley holding a 2-1 series lead in the previous games. It was the second straight game that EIU had five or more players score in double figures as seven Panthers reached double figures in the win over Fontbonne University. The Panthers shot 50 percent in the game marking the second straight game at 50 percent or better and third time in the last four games. Muusa Dama scored 12 points at Marquette giving him back-to-back 12 point contests. He was also active on the glass finishing with seven rebounds with six of those coming on the offensive glass. Last season Dama was the top rebounder in the Ohio Valley Conference at 9.6 rpg and 13 double figure rebounding games. The senior added a blocked shot against Marquette as he moved into 9th on the EIU career list with 65 blocked shots. He needs one more to tie Henry Domercant for eighth at EIU. Senior Ray Crossland provided a spark off the bench against Marquette as he played 39 minutes finishing with 13 points. Crossland added five rebounds and a team high two steals. It was Crossland s second game this season with multiple steals after getting two against IUPUI. Last season he ranked fourth in the OVC in steals. D Angelo Jackson came off the bench at Marquette and matched his season high with 11 points. It was the third time this season Jackson has scored 11 points after 11 point games at Western Illinois and against IUPUI. Jackson was 3-of-4 from the foul line as he has made 27 trips to the charity stripe this season. Eastern Illinois finished with a advantage in bench scoring in Monday s loss at Marquette. The Panthers had two players score in double figures off the bench in Ray Crossland (13) and D Angelo Jackson (11). For the season EIU is averaging 24.3 points per game in bench production with the Panthers holding a plus 11.3 points per game margin in bench scoring over their opponents. Eastern Illinois played its first overtime game this season on Monday night with a loss at Marquette. The Panthers are now in overtime games as an NCAA Division I school. Under head coach Jay Spoonhour, EIU is 7-6 in overtime games. Eastern Illinois played Illinois on November 3 in front of a sold out crowd at Lantz Arena. The additional exhibition game was granted by the NCAA this year with proceeds going to disaster relief. Eastern Illinois will be donating $30,000 to the Red Cross for Hurricane Relief as the proceeds from that contest. Eastern Illinois basketball signed two players during the NCAA early signing period. Set to play for EIU next season are guard Kashawn Charles (Long Island, NY/Labette CC) and guard Shareef Smith (Madison, Wis./Highland CC).
