5 BASKETBALL PROGRAM MISSION Our goal is to effect positive change in the lives of the student athletes through hard work, sportsmanship and discipline. We want to be a pillar of excellence in the community by putting forth maximum effort on the court and by giving back to program supporters and local organizations. Players that compete in our program will attend college with life skills and leadership qualities that will help them be successful in their careers and family lives.
6 PROGRAM GOALS Reputation for winning CIF Champions within 3 years; State Champions within 5 years Have a program that youngsters aspire to be a part of when they enter high school Have every player attend college Become a part of the local community and give back Help players get scholarships
7 ACADEMICS Office Hours & Teacher Meetings Hold office hours weekly Meet with players bi-weekly to stay on top of grades Meet with teachers as necessary to discuss how students can improve grades Utilize progress reports to track student advancement / areas of need Help players establish great study habits and time management skills Hold study hall as necessary
8 HOW WE WILL WIN CIF 1) Great Practices Games are won in practice Players are made in the offseason Commitment to fundamental skill work in every practice Build a defense wins mentality through stressing defensive fundamentals and developing toughness 2) Year around plan for player development Monitor and work with lower level teams Weights and fundamental skill development program in the offseason 3) Community involvement Summer basketball camps for junior high school and elementary levels Connect with area youth coaches and players Charitable efforts 4) Fundraising Raise money so we have the best in facilities, equipment and team opportunities Utilize Booster Club / parent groups for event planning and execution 5) Team Building and Coaching Staff Expert and enthusiastic coaching staff; give them credit along the way Playing top competition and playing in top tournaments; exposure to the best Team trips to basketball camps and/or tournaments
9 GREAT PRACTICES Design of practice is the single most important tool for improving daily as a team **Practices are open to parents Meet with coaches for 15 minutes every day prior to practice to explain practice plan and what is expected of them Defense wins championships Every practice planned down to the minute: drills, team talks, water breaks, etc. Maximize repetitions and create an environment of competition Demand effort in every drill Utilize multiple team managers to run drills, keep stats and organize practice Focus on the fundamentals for minutes every day Utilize a broad spectrum of drills and tactics to cover all important aspects of team basketball Special emphasis on shooting technique
10 What if my child is a multi-sport athlete? Come up with an agreeable action plan / schedule between our coaching staff and the parents Show up to some summer workouts Parents must support the plan once established Work with each student athlete on a case by case basis
11 YEAR AROUND PLAN SEPTEMBER: Skill Work Fall league two days per week Intense focus on skills and fundamentals training Weight training three days per week Intro team offensive concepts Annual basketball fundraiser Practice time 1.5 hours OCTOBER: Skill work Weight training three days per week Begin input of all plays Introduction of team defensive concepts Individual breakdown workouts with coaches Practice time hours NOVEMBER: Team Concepts / Season Begins Team building week Complete insertion of all offensive and defensive concepts Weight training three days per week Begin preparation for tournaments Practice time 2 hours DECEMBER: Pre-League Tournaments Weight training two days per week Non-league tournament play begins Take team out of town for tournament (San Diego, Palm Springs, Santa Barbara, Arizona, etc.) Practice time hours
12 YEAR AROUND PLAN JANUARY / FEBRUARY: League Play Weight training one or two days per week League play begins CIF Playoffs begin in mid-february Practice time 1.5 hours MARCH: CIF and State Playoffs Weight training one or two days per week CIF Finals and State Tournament Practice time 1.5 hours If eliminated, players get several weeks off After season conduct individual player meetings to discuss opportunities for improvement and spring plan APRIL / MAY: Spring League and Skill Work Weight training three days per week Open gym, 5-on-5 games within the program Skill work two days per week Spring leagues; get younger level many games so they have the opportunity to improve Organize Spring Game possibly against Alumni or within program JUNE / JULY: Summer leagues Intense focus on skills and fundamentals training Weight training three days per week Try to play games during these two months Team Camp (can attend in San Diego or other location) Potential to enter team into Club tournaments so they play against top competition in an organized event AUGUST Month off!
13 Goal Board Example West Warriors GOALS Win league, CIF, and State 100% on defense for 100% of the game Communicate in practice and games Hold opponents to 50 points Win a tournament How west plays -Control the tempo -Set the tone from the start -We determine the outcome of the game -Don t play down to their level -Control the controllables What teams say about West I am tired They are non-stop They are locked in Team Rules Play music at practice Must Not Be Too Nice Impose Your Will
14 Playing Time and Parent Involvement Playing Time 1) Attendance is paramount 2) Playing time is earned; not a given 3) Set expectations with all varsity players about their roll on the team 4) Meet with players individually on a regular basis, but especially before they commit to joining varsity 5) Likely to carry players on Varsity Parent Discussions 1) Open door policy for players and parents 2) If complaints, meet with student athlete first; if parent still wants to meet we can meet with player present (never meetings day of game) 3) 24 Hour Rule no meetings within 24 hours of the end of the game
15 Behavior in the Stands Keep it positive Don t put more pressure on your kids Do not coach your kids during the games Tell them you are proud of them
