It doesn t appear to be good news for the rest of the Horizon League. The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee won its first-ever Horizon League regular season title a year ago and turned that into the first-ever NIT bid for the school. That marked back-to-back post-season appearances and 20-win campaigns for the Panthers under Bruce Pearl and the emergence of UWM as the top basketball program in the Horizon League. In fact, a quick check of the three years under Pearl shows UWM with a record in Horizon League games - the best mark of any league school. Now, UWM enters the season looking to replace Horizon League Player of the Year Dylan Page, along with fellow departed seniors Nate Mielke and Kalombo Kadima. But, after replacing seven seniors following the season, the task this year appears much less daunting. In fact, UWM returns 61 percent of its scoring from a year ago and boasts four returning starters. Toss in three transfers who were sidelined last season, a top-75 junior college recruit and more young blood and the Panthers appear poised to make another push toward Horizon League supremacy. Milwaukee Basketball Prospectus 5 Panthers Appear Poised For Another Solid Season Ed McCants will be the centerpiece for the Panthers in the upcoming season. The 6-foot-3 senior did not disappoint a year ago. After being rated as the second-best junior college shooting guard in the country, McCants averaged 17.1 ppg and set a school record by making 104 three-point shots. In fact, McCants is one of just two returning players nationally to rank in the top 25 in both three-point field goal percentage and three-point field goals per game. Plus, McCants steadily improved his all-around game last season, averaging 3.5 rebounds per game while tallying 39 steals and 20 blocks. He enters the campaign as the leading candidate for Horizon League Player of the Year honors and with an excellent chance at plenty of national recognition. Joining McCants in the starting backcourt will be junior Chris Hill. The 5-foot-10 Chicago native split starting assignments with Kalombo Kadima a season ago, but finished fourth on the team in scoring at 7.3 ppg. The lightning-quick Hill also tied McCants for the team lead in steals with 39. Joah Tucker made the Horizon League s All-Newcomer Team last season but was disappointed to be left off either of the All-Horizon League teams. He ll get the chance to earn one of those 10 spots this year, returning to the lineup Ed McCants, the fourth-leading scorer and top threepoint shooter in the Horizon League, is a favorite for League Player of the Year honors after starting all 31 games a season ago. Tucker averaged 12.5 ppg and 4.8 rpg while shooting just under 50 percent from the field. He played a major role in two of the biggest road wins of the season for the Panthers. He made all eight of his field goal attempts while scoring 20 points at Green Bay and then, a week later, made 10-of-13 shots from the field while totaling 26 points in a win at Detroit. Adrian Tigert appears primed for his best season as a Panther now that he has been completely health for nearly a year. Tigert started all 31 games a season ago but was still working his way back from a knee injury that sidelined him for the entire campaign. The junior center averaged 6.1 ppg and 6.4 rpg while leading the team with 110 assists. He capped off last season by grabbing 17 rebounds at Boise State in a NIT contest. Tigert, a member

6 Milwaukee Basketball Prospectus of the Horizon League s All-Newcomer team in , shot nearly 59 percent from the field last year and has now started 58 of his 59 career games. The intense competition for the fifth starting spot, as well as spots in the regular rotation, should provide a window into the amount of depth the Panthers will have in One angle on the starting five could land junior college transfer Derrick Ford in the lineup. A 6- foot-10 center from Toledo, Ohio, and Olney Community College, he is an imposing figure inside. Ford didn t score much in the JUCO Joah Tucker averaged 12.5 ppg last season ranks - averaging 5.6 ppg last season - but will provide the Panthers a big boost in rebounding and shot blocking. But the list of options for the Panther starting five and rotation includes plenty of other names. Mark Pancratz seems to find his way on the floor and the season should be no exception. A spark on defense, Pancratz averaged 2.4 ppg in his most extensive playing time as a Panther. Jason McCoy played a limited role in two season at Rutgers but his wingspan and athleticism should Adrian Tigert have an impact on the Panther rotation. At 6-foot-9, McCoy would rank as the tallest small forward in the Horizon League. He was an all-state performer at Milby High School in Texas. Derrick Wimmer nearly single-handedly beat the Panthers two years ago when UWM played at Chicago State, but now the Milwaukee-native will join the Panthers after sitting out as a transfer last season. A stellar three-point shooter, Wimmer should see time in the backcourt this season. He started 20-of-30 games for Chicago State two years ago, averaging 10 ppg. He was a second-team allstate performer out of Whitefish Bay Dominican. Ronald Boo Davis sat out last season with a variety of ailments, including knee tendinitis and a battle with mononucleosis. If healthy this season, the athletic Davis will also fight for time in the backcourt. He averaged 13.6 ppg and 5.2 rpg in his second season at Olney Community College in , knocking in a team-high 69 three-point shots. James Wright also returns for his final season of eligibility with the Panthers. Wright has been plagued by injuries during his career and appeared in 17 games last season. But, Wright provided a spark to the UWM rotation late in the year and could fight for minutes on the interior this season. Another player in the mix is true freshman Allan Hanson. A 6-foot guard from Wauwatosa East, Hanson was a firstteam all-state performer and should compete for time at the point guard position. UWM will again be playing a competitive schedule. With one game still to be scheduled, the Panthers have non-conference dates with NCAA Tournament qualifiers Kansas, Wisconsin, Air Force, Manhattan and Valparaiso, plus NIT qualifiers Purdue and St. Louis. UWM will also be involved in ESPN s Bracket Buster event for the thirdstraight year. The upcoming season will also see UWM play every one of its home games at the U.S. Cellular Arena. Last season, the Panthers played nine regular season Chris Hill will likely be the starting point guard for the Panthers in and two post-season games downtown, drawing nearly 5,000 fans per game to the Arena and setting regular season and post-season attendance records. The Arena will also look more like home to the Panthers in An off-season project included a refurbished floor, painted in the Panthers familiar black and gold.

Milwaukee Basketball Prospectus 7 Topping The Charts Over the last three seasons, UWM has posted numbers worthy of calling it the best basketball program in the Horizon League. In fact, the Panthers are in regular season Horizon League contests under Bruce Pearl, the best mark of any league team in that time span. The standings for the last three seasons: W L Milwaukee Butler UIC Detroit Wright State Loyola UW-Green Bay Youngstown State Cleveland State 9 39 Plenty In Return UWM has plenty of pieces coming back for the season. In fact, the Panthers return four of their five starters from a season ago and bring back 61 percent of their scoring from last year. First-team All-Horizon League performer Ed McCants and All-Newcomer Team member Joah Tucker lead the list of returnees. Everything Ed Ed McCants enters the season as a leading candidate for Horizon League Player of the Year honors, and for good reason. McCants lived up to expectations a season ago, averaging 17.1 ppg while making 104 three-point shots - a school record. In fact, McCants is one of just two returning players in the country that ranked in the top 25 for both threepoint field goals made and three-point field goal percentage. Depending on the eligibility of UIC s Cedrick Banks, McCants will be either the first or second leading scorer returning in the league. Setting The Schedule UWM will again be challenged by a difficult non-league slate in The Panthers have five NCAA Tournament teams and two NIT teams on the non-conference portion of the schedule. UWM will play Air Force in Milwaukee Nov. 28, at St. Louis Dec. 7 and then travel to Valparaiso Dec. 11. The Panthers also have games at Wisconsin Dec. 15, Kansas Dec. 22 and Manhattan Dec. 30. UWM plays at Purdue Jan. 26. Big On The Big 10 UWM s games with Purdue and Wisconsin will mark the first time since the season that the Panthers will play two Big 10 teams in the same season. That year, UWM played at Iowa, Illinois and Wisconsin. The Panthers haven t beaten a Big 10 team since a win at Wisconsin in Packing Them In The season was another record-setter at the gates for the UWM basketball team. The season attendance total of 60,541 and the average of 4,324 both set records. Plus, the average attendance for the 11 games at the U.S. Cellular Arena was 4,813. UWM also set a new single-game mark with the crowd of 10,254 for the Horizon League title game against UIC and a new mark for a regular-season game with the 8,703 in attendance for the contest with UW-Green Bay. Paint Job The U.S. Cellular Arena will feel a little more like home to UWM this season. The basketball floor at the Arena has received a paint job and will now be in the Panthers colors of black and gold. UWM is now the primary basketball tenant at the Arena and is in the second year of a four-year agreement to play its games downtown. Tickets... Get Your Tickets Season tickets are now on sale for the season at the U.S. Cellular Arena. Packages also include two exhibition games and start at just $85. Fans can reserve their seats immediately with a $50 deposit. Single game tickets will go on sale in October. Wisconsin Proud UWM s roster will again have a distinct Wisconsin flavor in Eight players from the state have a spot on the squad, including likely starters Joah Tucker and Adrian Tigert. Overall, the roster will have a strong Midwestern flavor, with four players from Illinois, three players from Ohio and one from Indiana. Tourney Time After two seasons with a slightly-modified format, the 2005 Horizon League Men s Basketball Championship will take on its pure format. That means the regular season champion will host the second round and semifinals and, if it advances, the championsip game. First round games involving the fourththrough-ninth place teams will continue to take place at campus sites on the Tuesday following the conclusion of the regular season. The tournament then shifts to the regular season champion on Friday and Saturday with the title game the following Tuesday. Following Up Some Panthers of past years are busy pursuing professional basketball careers. Dylan Page has signed a contract with Ment of Thessalaniki in Greece while Tim Gittens is on the summer roster for the New York Knicks. Clay Tucker played in Sweden last season and may be returning to Europe again this year. Ronnie Jones, Nate Mielke and Kalombo Kadima are also pursuing spots overseas for the coming season. Getting Started Midnight Mayhem for the season is set for Friday, Oct. 15 at the Klotsche Center with the first official practice starting at 12:01 am Saturday. The events will be part of UWM s annual Homecoming celebration. The exhibition opener is tentatively scheduled for Nov. 1 with the regular season opener Nov. 20 against Prairie View A&M. Right now, UWM is set to play its first four regular season games at home.

8 Milwaukee Basketball Prospectus Bruce Pearl 4th Season in Milwaukee overall at UWM The magic of Bruce Pearl has continued in Milwaukee. After carving out a remarkably successful career at the University of Southern Indiana, Pearl brought his winning ways to Milwaukee and has turned UWM into one of the top Mid- Major programs in the country. Under Pearl s direction last season, the Panthers won the first Division I regular season league title in school history. UWM tied a school record by winning 13 league games for the second year in a row. UWM also claimed a first-ever NIT berth and beat Rice in an opening round game. Pearl holds a record in Horizon League games and has the best winning percentage in league play of any coach in Horizon League history. This past season, UWM bolted to a 10-0 start in league play, including an amazing road winning streak that included victories at UW-Green Bay, Cleveland State, Detroit and Wright State in a period of 11 days - winning every game by double digits. Plus, Pearl helped senior Dylan Page win Horizon League Player of the Year honors and saw his recruiting pay off, as Ed McCants was named League Newcomer of the Year and joined Joah Tucker on the all-newcomer team. Last year s success built on a growing tradition at UWM. Two years ago, the Panthers won 24 games, the most by a UWM squad since the season, equaling the all-time school record. He led UWM to its first-ever NCAA Tournament berth after winning the Horizon League Tournament championship. Then, in the tournament, Pearl led the Panthers within a point of upsetting Notre Dame. His work has been recognized by his peers and the media, as Pearl has claimed Horizon League Coach of the Year honors twice in his three years at UWM. People in Milwaukee have taken notice, making Pearl one of the most recognizable sports figures in the city. Fans have flocked to the Klotsche Center and the U.S. Cellular Arena, with attendance rising in every year of Pearl s tenure. Pearl s outgoing nature has attracted the attention of citizens and media across the state and Pearl has become a regular on local talk shows, including filling in as a host on WTMJ, the city s top station. The move downtown to the U.S. Cellular Arena by the Panthers has been successful in large part because of Pearl. UWM has drawn more than 10,000 fans to the Horizon League title game each of the last two seasons. Plus, in the first regular season downtown since the mid-1990 s, Pearl s Panthers drew more than 8,700 fans for a contest with UW-Green Bay. Pearl made his mark immediately on coming to UWM. He was named the 19th head coach of the 109-year-old program on THE GEM OF UWM PEARL AT UWM Led UWM to 2004 Horizon League regular season title and NIT berth Led UWM to 2003 NCAA Tournament Led UWM to League Tournament title in 2003 Two-time Horizon League Coach of the Year 60 wins in three seasons Led UWM to 24 wins in , the most since the season Led UWM to a pair of 13-3 Horizon League marks, the best records in school history Named one of 10 Coaches On The Rise by Athlon Magazine Led UWM to 11 league wins in wins overall in were the most-ever for a first-year head coach at UWM in the school s 109-year basketball history Led UWM to first-ever win over ranked foe UWM has set single-game and total attendance records in each of his first three seasons SOUTHERN INDIANA UNDER PEARL 231 wins in nine seasons 1995 NCAA Division II National Champion 1994 NCAA Division II National Runners-Up Six NCAA Tournament Sweet 16 appearances Four Great Lakes Valley Championships Ranked #1 nationally six different seasons Nine consecutive 20-win seasons Nine consecutive NCAA appearances PEARL S HONORS AND AWARDS AT USI 1995 NABC Coach of the Year 1995 NABC Great Lakes Coach of the Year 2000 NABC Great Lakes Coach of the Year Fastest coach to 200 wins at one school Winningest coach currently in Division I Named one of five Head Coaches On The Rise by Sport Magazine in 1999 April 11, 2001, replacing Bo Ryan, who left to be the head coach at Wisconsin. Pearl then proceeded to lead UWM to 16 wins that season, which at the time marked the most wins for the program since the season. But that only begins to detail the accomplishments in just one season. Under Pearl s direction, UWM won 11 games in the Horizon League in , which, at the time, set a new school record for the most wins in a Division I league. UWM finished second in the league during the regular season - the best league finish in school history. Plus, UWM claimed its first-ever win at Butler, its firstever win over a school from the Big East and its first-ever win over a ranked team. On top of that, Pearl entered his name into the UWM record book in just his first season. His 16 wins equaled the most by a

Milwaukee Basketball Prospectus 9 first-year coach in the program s 108-year history. But, those that follow college basketball closely had little doubt Pearl would be successful at UWM. He had been the head coach at Southern Indiana for the previous nine seasons. During Pearl s tenure - along with finishing second in the nation in USI won the national championship in In his final season at the Evansville, Ind., school, USI finished 26-4 and won the Great Lakes Valley Conference championship. His team was also ranked number one in the country for the sixth time in seven seasons, and USI advanced to the NCAA Tournament for a ninth-straight time. He is in his 11 seasons as a head coach. He reached 250 wins in a Dec. 1 victory over Maine and Pearl also reached the 200-victory plateau at one school sooner than any basketball coach in history. He shattered the original NCAA record held by Everett Case of North Carolina State when it took him just 240 games to claim 200 wins. In 1995, Pearl was named the National Association of Basketball Coaches Coach of the Year. He was twice named Great Lakes Valley Conference YEAR-BY-YEAR WITH BRUCE PEARL USI USI USI USI USI USI USI USI USI UWM UWM UWM TOTAL (.790) Coach of the Year and also named the NABC Great Lakes Region Coach of the Year twice. Pearl s coaching talents have been recognized nationally. In the May 1999 issue of Sport Magazine, Pearl was listed as one of the Five Head Coaches on the Rise, placing him in a group with Paul Hewitt (Georgia Tech), Mike Brey (Notre Dame), and Buzz Peterson (Tennessee). Pearl, who also served as Coordinator of Athletic Development at USI, annually raised over $500,000 for the university, and spurred unparalleled growth in the Varsity Club and other booster organizations. Pearl s marketing efforts and success on the basketball court also led to the sellout of every chairback seat for USI home games. Prior to moving to USI, Pearl was an assistant coach for Dr. Tom Davis at the University of Iowa. During Pearl s six-year stay at Iowa, the Hawkeyes received five NCAA Tournament berths, advancing to the Elite Eight (1987) and the Sweet 16 (1988). Pearl helped Dr. Davis compile a record in those six seasons. In leaving Iowa, Pearl ended 14 years as an assistant to Davis. Prior to joining Davis at Iowa, Pearl was Davis assistant coach at Stanford and Boston College, where he earned his undergraduate degree.
