6 new mexico game notes THERE S NO PLACE LIKE HOME Special is an arena that can be identified by six letters. The Pit is nationally recognized as one of the top basketball venues. Need more evidence? How about Sports Illustrated ranking it as one of the top 20 sporting venues, of any sport, in the world for the 20th century. The Pit is truly a special place, and it has created an unparalleled environment for the New Mexico women s basketball program. The Lobos have led the Mountain West in attendance every year of the conference s existence since the season. During that same span, the program has ranked in the top 12 nationally in attendance in each of those years. ALBUQUERQUE S OWN When head coach Yvonne Sanchez calls Albuquerque her home, she really means it. Sanchez enters her fourth season at the helm of the Lobo program after spending the previous 11 seasons as an assistant on staff under coach Don Flanagan. However, Yvonne Sanchez and basketball in Albuquerque go back over a quarter of a century. Sanchez was a prep stand-out for Flanagan at Eldorado High School in Albuquerque in the 1980s captains Senior Antiesha Brown and junior Bryce Owens are the team s captains in Brown was the team s leading scorer last season and an honorable mention All-Mountain West selection. Owens is the active leader in games and played for the Lobos. Student-athlete spirit Academic excellence has become the norm for the New Mexico women s basketball. The Lobos are regularly taking home Mountain West Academic all-conference and Scholar-Athlete awards, but they shine in national academic rankings as well. For six of the last seven seasons, and eight of the last 10 seasons, UNM has finished in the WBCA s Academic Top 25 rankings. Lobos from near and far The Lobo women s basketball roster is a mixture of home-grown and regional talent, sprinkled with representation from four other states and one country. Four Lobos hail from New Mexico, including two from Albuquerque. Five players come from Texas (including one Albuquerque transplant), one from Nevada and one from Utah. Florida, Minnesota and Wisconsin also are represented in the women s basketball family. Josie Greenwood is the lone international player on the team, and has different Lobo family ties. The Hobart, Australia native is the sister of men s basketball point guard Hugh Greenwood. 6 Mountain West Media poll The Lobos were picked to finish ninth in the Mountain West preseason poll released in October regular-season champion Colorado State grabbed the top spot in the poll, listed below: Rank Team (1st-place votes) Points 1. Colorado State (21) Boise State (4) Wyoming (3) Fresno State Nevada UNLV San Diego State Utah State New Mexico San José State Air Force 27 No Lobos made the preseason All-Mountain West team. However, senior Antiesha Brown earned College Sports Madness preseason second-team all-conference recognition. Toughest non-conference Schedule? If New Mexico s non-conference schedule doesn t get the team ready for Mountain West play this season, nothing will. The Lobos have four teams on their docket ranked in both The Associated Press and USA TODAY Coaches Preseason Top 25 polls (rankings are at the time UNM played that foe): Date Opponent Rank (AP/USA Today) Nov. 15 Vs. 7 new mexico game notes There s no place like Home II UNM finished with a 13-2 at WisePies Arena/The Pit and a 12- game winning streak this season, its longest since the end of the season (14 games). The Lobos are 5-9 away from The Pit but did win four of their last five. UNM went undefeated in conference play for the first time since and the fifth time in school history. Better Closeouts in In games decided by six points or fewer, UNM is 6-1 in its last seven after its win over Fresno State on Feb. 28. In the 16 six-point games prior, dating to , the Lobos had lost 15 games, including four straight to start UNM also is 5-0 in MW games decided by five points or fewer in '14-15; it was 1-8 in such games a season ago (including the MW Tournament). A Tale of Two seasons The combination of one of the toughest non-conference schedules in the county, preseason dismissals of a pair of players expected to play significant roles this season and the growing pains of breaking in four true freshmen players led to a 1-7 start this season. That is a distany memory in the wake of UNM's 19-4 record since Here is a comparison of the team's statistics during their two "seasons." Category (per game) First 8 games Last 23 games Scoring margin Field-goal percentage 37.6% 41.0% Field-goal percentage defense 42.3% 37.2% Free-throw percentage 60.1% 69.0% 3-pointers allowed Turnovers per game Turnover margin Assists per game Assist/turnover ratio Steals per game Blocks per game The Road Less Traveled Much of UNM's turnaround also can be attributed to its ability to find ways to win away from the Pit in conference. The Lobos lost their first seven games on the road or in neutral games. But a win at Air Force triggered a new pattern of behavior in which New Mexico won five of seven to finish the regular season and then won the first two games in the MW Tournament at the Thomas & Mack Center, aka "The Pit West." The following is a before and after look from the road: Category (per game) First 7 Last 9 Scoring margin Field-goal percentage 36.5% 42.1% Field-goal percentage defense 44.1% 39.7% 3-point field-goal percentage 25.3% 28.3% Free-throw percentage 60.8% 72.8% Turnovers per game Turnover margin Assists per game Assist/turnover ratio Blocks per game More on the REsurgence Several players have found their niche as the season has progressed, which has contributed to the Lobos' turnaround. Among them: Bryce Owens The junior point guard's assist-to-turnover ratio in her last 15 games is 1.66 (58 assists, 35 turnovers), compared to 0.41 in her first 14 (22 assists, 32 turnovers). She tied her season high with three 3-pointers in the MW Tournament semifinals game against Boise State. Brea Mitchell In her last 14 games, the junior guard is 22- of-53 from the floor (41.5 percent) and has 39 total rebounds. Mitchell was 10-of-35 (28.6 percent) and had 10 rebounds in the 10 games before that. She had a career-high six rebounds vs. Boise State on Feb. 25. Mitchell is 5-of-10 from 3-point range so far in the MW Tournament. Kianna Keller The sophomore forward has blocked 31 shots in her last 31 games after managing just nine in her first 10 games of the season. She's also averaging 1.3 points per game more in her last 21 games that in her first nine games. Laneah Bryan The freshman guard has made 14 of 27 field-goal attempts (51.9 percent) and 7 of 14 3-pointers (50.0 percent) in conference play. During non-conference play, Bryan was 5-of-19 from the floor (20.8 percent) and 1-of-5 from 3-point territory (20 percent). Kenya Pye The freshman guard scored 14 points in UNM's first 15 games but has 32 in her last 17, including two 3s vs. Nevada. "D" Lightful During their 18-game conference schedule, the Lobos held 12 foes to fewer than 40-percent shooting. In a seven game span during UNM's eight-game winning streak earlier this season, the Lobos did not allowed a foe to shoot 40 percent from the floor. San José State shot 39.7 percent, which was been the best during UNM in that span. The Lobos forced Colorado State to shoot 24.7 percent from the floor (13-of-54) on Feb. 11, the worst percentage against UNM this season. The Lobos also held six of their last seven opponents at home to less than 40 percent shooting. Signature Win II Before defeating Colorado State (with a 17-5 record coming into the Feb. 11 game), UNM had not lost to a team with a losing record but also had not beaten a team with a winning record. The combined record of the teams that have beaten the Lobos before the game against CSU was (.709 winning percentage). The combined record of the teams UNM had defeated was (.370 winning percentage). Bench Strength The Lobos have won 10 straight games in which their bench has outscored the opposing team's bench and is 11-3 overall this season. UNM is 8-7 in games in which its opponents' bench has scored more, and 1-1 in games in which bench scoring was even New Mexico women s basketball 7

8 new mexico game notes Worker Ant Senior guard Antiesha Brown has scored in double figures in 13 straight games and 24 of her last 28 games. Brown's performance during the UNM Thanksgiving Invitational earned her a spot on the All-Tournament team. Her 22 points at New Mexico State in December was a season high. Brown became the 19th player to reach 1,000 points when she scored 21 points against Frenso State on Feb. 28. She is in 12th place on UNM's career scoring list with 1,068 points. Brown earned her second MW Player of the Week honors for the week of Feb in wins over Boise State and Fresno State. She averaged 18.5 points, 7.5 rebound, 2.0 steals and 1.5 assists in the two wins. Her first award came Jan in wins over San Diego State and Utah State. She averaged 20 points, 3.5 rebounds, 4.0 assists and 2.0 steals per game. The Clovis, N.M. native also is a nominee for the Allstate Good Works Team, honoring student-athletes active in the community. josie AND THE Highlanders Against the UC Riverside Highlanders in the championship game of the UNM Thanksgiving Tournament, sophomore forward Josie Greenwood, sister of Lobo men's point guard Hugh, had career highs in points (15), field goals (seven), field-goal attempts (11), offensive rebounds (five) and minutes (24), tied for a career high with two assists and was one off her career high with seven rebounds. All-Around Performer Junior forward Khadijah Shumpert is enjoying an excellent season in She scored a career-high 27 points and added 12 rebounds for her fourth career double-double in UNM s win over Cal Poly on Dec. 18. She also has scored 17 points twice the latest coming in a win at San Diego State on Feb. 18. Shumpert, who averaged 12.7 points and 9.3 rebounds per game in the three season-opening games in Chicago, earned a spot on the Maggie Dixon Classic All-Tournament team. Shumpert recorded her third career double-double with 17 points and 14 rebounds against UTPA in the season opener. The Minneapolis, Minn., native also scored her first career 3-pointer against Stanford on Nov. 24. During Mountain West play, Shumpert averaged 9.7 points per game, usually against double-coverage that has freed up UNM's perimeter players for more open shots that has help fuel the team's chase for a MW regular-season championship. "ReeSe's" pieces True freshman guard Cherise Beynon,, nicknamed "Reese," had her best game of the season in UNM's biggest game so far, a win over Colorado State on Feb. 11. The freshman scored a career-high 18 points, dished out four assists tying a career high and pulling down a team-best eight rebounds. She is averaging 1.8 steals per game over her last 19 games and has led the team in rebounding 12 times this season. Beynon (pronounced BAY-nun) made an immediate splash this season, tying for the team-high in points against No. 18 DePaul with 14. During the three-game Maggie Dixon Classic, the Las Vegas, Nev., native averaged 8.0 points, 6.0 rebounds and 2.0 assists per game. She also scored 14 points in UNM s game against topranked Stanford on Nov. 24 and had 13 points all in the second half at Fresno State on Dec. 31. Beynon had her first double-digit rebounding day Jan. 21 vs. UNLV with 10. Staff of enchantment Besides coach Yvonne Sanchez s New Mexico roots, the UNM staff has several other connections to the Land of Enchantment. Assistant coach Amy Beggin is a 2010 graduate of UNM and just one of 17 Lobo players to score 1,000 points during her collegiate career. She became the program s video coordinator in 2011 and worked her way up to director of operations and now assistant coach, where she is in her first season. Jourdan Erskine replaced Beggin as the team s director of operations. Erskine played for the Lobos from and was a team captain her senior year. Erskine was the team s video coordinator last season. That video role now has been filled by Vera Jo Bustos, who was a standout New Mexico prep player at West Las Vegas High School. She is the school s all-time leader in points, rebounds, assists, steals and games started. The team s fourth-year strength and conditioning coordinator is another former Lobo, Molly McKinnon. McKinnon ( ) finished her UNM career ranked in the top 20 in scoring and rebounding and in the top five in 3-point field-goal percentage. Future s so bright The Lobos have signed three players for the season: Emily Lines, a 6-foot-1 guard from Naples, Fla., Jannon Otto, a 6-1 guard/ forward from Hesperia, Calif., and Jaisa Nunn, a 6-3 post from Kirkland, Wash. BlueStar Basketball listed UNM s class as an honorable mention Top-50 recruiting class, the highest-rated in the Mountain West. All three are McDonald s All-American Games nominees.
