2016 MEMBERSHIP TOWN HALL MEETING Player Development Initiatives - Small-sided games standards Player Development Initiatives - Birth year registration PWSI PDI Implementation CommunicationTimeline Select Program Goals & Objectives U.S. Soccer DevelopmentAcademy National Premier League Youth Development League -Virginia Super YLeague 2016 Camps Q &A
* DISCLAMER Prince William Soccer supports U.S.Soccer s efforts to raise the standard of development for all youth players. The plan for implementation is developed with the most recent and best information currently available. PWSI reserves the right to make changes or adjustments based on new information from U.S. Soccer and/or youth organizations or best practices shared within the soccer community.
PDI - SMALL-SIDEDSTANDARDS Standardizes playing numbers and field dimensions Focused at players from the U-6 to U-12 age groups Field size is based on age groups 8U - 4v4 9U/10U - 7v7 11U/12U - 9v9 13U & older - 11v11
PDI - BIRTH YEAR REGISTRATION Align the start of the calendar year (January to December) All age groups simultaneously Align registration with the international standard Combat relative age effect Age group determined by end of calendar year (example below) Tryouts - Spring 2016 Start of play - Fall 2016 End of year - Summer minus year of birth = age group = 15U
MOVING FORWARD For those looking to adopt the mandates in , here is a list that shows the birth year for that season. Again, please note that when determining the age group for a season, the year the competition ends should be used. Season Birth Year U U6 U U6 U7 U U6 U7 U8 U U6 U7 U8 U9 U U6 U7 U8 U9 U10 U U6 U7 U8 U9 U10 U11 U U6 U7 U8 U9 U10 U11 U12 U U6 U7 U8 U9 U10 U11 U12 U13 U U7 U8 U9 U10 U11 U12 U13 U14 U U8 U9 U10 U11 U12 U13 U14 U15 U U9 U10 U11 U12 U13 U14 U15 U16 U U10 U11 U12 U13 U14 U15 U16 U17 U U11 U12 U13 U14 U15 U16 U17 U18 U U12 U13 U14 U15 U16 U17 U18 U U13 U14 U15 U16 U17 U18 U U14 U15 U16 U17 U18 U U15 U16 U17 U18 U U16 U17 U18 U U17 U18 U U18 U U19 There is another very important component to understand about this chart. To avoid players aging out of an age group during a season, the new top age group for youth competitions is U19. This change aligns with the birth year standard and makes sure that players are not eliminated from participating during the second half of a season. In short, all the existing U18 leagues should become U19 in the season and this change should cascade down the age groups (Ex: U17 becomes U18, U16 becomes U17, etc.).
RELATIVE AGE EFFECT
UNINTENDED CONSEQUENCES * Break up of current teams and social groups Duplicate jersey # s High school seniors (19U teams) Trapped 8th graders during high school soccer season Age appropriate play guidelines (7v7, 9v9,11v11) College recruiting Moving (not changing) the relative age effect
