After a slow offensive start, freshman Alex Esposito has scored all five of his goals since Nov. 17 That tally is tied for the league-lead among rookies during that span with two other players Among Hockey East rookies, he is eighth in total goals and ranks seventh in shots on goal with 49 He tied a career-high against Harvard on Dec. 30 with six shots, matching his total against New Hampshire on Oct. 28 GAME NOTES THE LEKKAS FILE Stefanos Lekkas ranks second in Hockey East in total saves with 581 and has set a career-high with 41 saves three times this year Lekkas has registered at least 30 stops nine times in 20 starts The Illinois native earned seven Hockey East weekly awards last season during his rookie campaign and was the Friendship Four s Most Outstanding Player in Belfast, Northern Ireland SAVE THE BEST FOR LAST Ross Colton and Matt O Donnell are two of only four Hockey East skaters with at least five goals in the third period this season O Donnell leads all defensemen in that category as all five of his tallies have come in the final frame Meanwhile, Colton is tied for the national lead with four power play goals scored in the third period TWO-WAY DEFENSEMAN Matt O Donnell is tied for fourth in Hockey East for goals by a defenseman with five on the season All five of his goals have been timely and he is the only player in Hockey East with multiple game-tying goals Among Hockey East blueliners, he is tied for 19th in scoring with 11 points, nine of which have come in league play O Donnell is already within two of last year s rookie point total KAUF AND RUNNING Rookie Max Kaufman is tied for fourth on the team and tied for 14th among Hockey East rookies in goals with four The Rochester native also ranks 12th in the league among all firstyear skaters with a 49% success rate at the faceoff dot The Catamounts are this year when he records a point Kaufman earned his first Hockey East Rookie of the Week award on Nov. 27 following his first career game-winning goal He collected the game-winner just 20 seconds into overtime at Dartmouth on Nov. 25 for UVM s fourth straight win in the series PUFF THE MAGIC DRAGON Craig Puffer is third on the team in scoring with 10 points Last year, Puffer nearly quadrupled his goal total and more than doubled his point total from his rookie campaign The junior ranked 11th in Hockey East in third period goals last year as seven of his 11 tallies came in the final frame FOREVER YOUNG 14 of UVM s last 20 goals have been scored by an underclassman, including a streak of eight straight snapped at Maine on Dec. 2 Four of the team s top five goal scorers and four of the top seven point getters this year are underclassmen In addition, 75% of the squad s 16 power play goals on the season have been netted by an underclassman SPECIAL POWERS The Vermont penalty kill ranks third in Hockey East at 81.5% The kill has taken a step back in the second half, allowing five goals on 11 power play chances, but UVM leads the league with only 7.2 PIM per game after the break 3
