The status of injured defenseman Dennis Seidenberg, who skated before practice with strength and conditioning coach John Whiteside, remained uncertain. Julien, however, seemed to rule out Andrew Ference, another injured blue liner who did not skate with the team Saturday. I don t anticipate [Seidenberg] being ready for [Sunday], but with the injury he s got, you never know, said Julien. As far as Ference is concerned, he hasn t skated yet so he won t be in there tomorrow. Redden, meanwhile, put in his work in an attempt to help bolster Boston s injury riddled corps of defensemen. It was good to get back out on the ice again and be with the guys and be a part of a practice and starting to feel better, said Redden, who did not play in Thursday night s 3-2 overtime victory in Game 1 because of an undisclosed injury.

If Redden is cleared to play, the veteran likely will displace one of the three youngsters Torey Krug, Dougie Hamilton, or Matt Bartkowski who stepped up admirably in Game 1 and logged significant ice time in the absence of Seidenberg, Ference, and Redden. Oh, they were great, Redden said. The young guys stepped in and played strong. I mean, obviously Big Z [captain Zdeno Chara] led the way. He s been carrying the weight, a lot of it. I think it s just a group going out there and getting it done. No matter who s dressed, you ve got to have that same attitude. Redden was asked if there was an added sense of urgency to get back with the defense so undermanned. Obviously, the urgency is there, but it s just a matter of being patient, making sure it s going to be good to hold up, Redden said. You ve got to know in your head if you re ready and that s all it comes down to. Obviously, guys play through pain but you ve got to make sure you re not out there and dinged up again because then you re shorthanding the team. In my mind, I want to make sure that I m able to go, before I m ready. Is it catching? Julien said he didn t have to envision Patrice Bergeron s line catching fire in this round of the playoffs. I think it s already happened, the coach said. When you look at Bergy s line, Bergy himself scoring two goals in Game 7 [of the quarterfinal series against Toronto]. Again, setting up that winning goal [Thursday night] and the chances; I thought they spent a lot of time, they cycled the puck well in the offensive zone. I think it s already happening. Julien, however, expressed the hope that energy would spread to Chris Kelly s line. If anything, I m hoping that Kells s line will find that groove, as well, Julien said. They re the next one on the list to hopefully get that. If they do that, then we re going to be that much better. Leading men Through eight playoff games, David Krejci ranks as the leading scorer in the playoffs with totals. Pittsburgh s Evgeni Malkin also has scored 14 points in eight games, but he has only three goals in that stretch... Chara leads all defensemen in playoff scoring with totals. Boston Globe LOADED: Boston Bruins Rangers focusing on the neutral zone in Game 2 By Nancy Marrapese-Burrell May 19, 2013 The neutral zone may sound like a benign place on the ice, but in Game 1 the Rangers viewed it as nothing short of a quagmire. That is one area in which the team vows to be diligent during Game 2 Sunday afternoon when the Eastern Conference best-of-seven semifinal series resumes against the Bruins at TD Garden. To a man, the Rangers said they need to limit turnovers, forecheck better, and make crisper, faster passes up the ice. We have to try to get our forecheck going a little more, hold onto some pucks in their end, and create offense off of that, said captain Ryan Callahan. Our biggest weakness was not spending enough time in their end. I think that s one of our strengths, getting in on the forecheck, creating turnovers, and that s how we get most of our offense. I didn t think we had enough of that in Game 1. It wasn t as if the Bruins game plan was a mystery. This time of year, each team knows what the other is about, it s just a matter of which one executes better. They re a good team, said Callahan. They come at you hard, they re hard on the forecheck. They are very good in the neutral zone. I think we turned the puck over a little bit too much in the neutral zone and they had some counters off of that. It s no secret, they re a good club over there. That s what they showed us in Game 1. I think Boston s really good in the neutral zone, they clog it up pretty well and it s hard to get pucks in behind their defensemen. But that s an area we need to improve on and something we need to focus on. Defenseman Ryan McDonagh said one of the challenges the Bruins present is that they aren t able to be rushed. They wait for other teams to make mistakes. They re a very patient team, said McDonagh. Obviously, they re aggressive and heavy on the forecheck at times. But they play a patient game through the neutral zone. Really, if you have any kind of turnover, that s what they thrive on. We did a decent job at times getting through there and you can see their strength, too, obviously in the defensive zone. We weren t able to hang onto pucks enough. One of the people who most created problems for the Rangers was Bruins captain Zdeno Chara, whose size and reach during yeoman s minutes made it difficult to maneuver. They ve got some big defensemen who can really move and get around the ice, said McDonagh. We re trying to get our backs on pucks a little bit more and create second and third opportunities that way. In the middle of the ice, McDonagh said the Rangers need to be mindful of not only what they are doing but what Boston is doing, too. A lot of teams are really focusing on that neutral zone, it s such an important area of the ice, he said. A lot of teams are trying to clog it up and create those turnovers there. So in that aspect, Washington and Boston are pretty similar. [The Bruins] are really detailed in their structure. They don t get out of that structure very much. You don t see them running around. They seem to know where each other are on the ice, both coming out of their zone, through the neutral zone, and the offensive zone. They have really good chemistry having played together for a while. We really have to just focus on when we re checking, make sure we have our heads on a swivel, know when they re at, and when we have the puck, use our legs and use our speed a little bit and get them moving. We re focusing here on coming out with a little bit better start obviously. We just want to try to set the tempo of how we want to play. The Rangers battled back from being down, two games to none, to the Capitals before rallying to win in seven games. They certainly don t want to replicate that hole, and a split in Boston would send them back to Madison Square Garden in a strong position. We ve been in this situation before, said Callahan. I think you have that to look back on, but it s a new series. We knew there were going to be times in the series where maybe we were down. It s just a matter of coming out and putting that one behind you and looking at Game 2. Boston Globe LOADED: Boston Bruins Bruins Jaromir Jagr trying to play to strengths By Michael Vega May 19, 2013 Jaromir Jagr knows he has dropped a cylinder or two since the days he was in Pittsburgh and played hockey as though his hair was on fire. That was when he had a high-octane game that matched his flowing mane and helped the Penguins win back-to-back Stanley Cup championships in 1991 and Now, at 41, his playoff beard speckled with grays, there is nothing remotely high octane about Jagr s game. Oh, he still has the quick hands and the savvy and awareness to strike fear into the heart of the opposition when he has the puck in the attacking zone.

But he also knows the 2013 Jagr is not as nimble or possessing the same horsepower or acceleration as the sporty 1991 Jagr model, who seemed to skate circles around his competitors. Once you stop learning, you re kind of dead or you have to quit, said Jagr as he sat at his locker following Saturday morning s practice at TD Garden, where the Bruins prepared to face the New York Rangers in Sunday s Game 2 of this best-of-seven Eastern Conference semifinal series. I m learning every day and I m 41, Jagr said. The game is changing. The world moves fast. The game is quicker and everything is quicker. If you re going to stay in the league, you have to find a way to adjust. You cannot play the same game that you did in You cannot play the same game in It s impossible, because the players are getting faster, better, quicker, just like everybody else. And while he appeared to skate painfully slowly in the Bruins seven-game series against the Toronto Maple Leafs, gliding along at a glacial pace when everyone around him moved at break-neck speed, Jagr, who remains the NHL s active leader in playoff goals (78), assists (115) and points (193), insists he still has plenty left in his tank to help the Bruins in their quest for the Stanley Cup. You have to play to your strengths, said Jagr, who has averaged 17:36 of ice time in eight playoff games, scoring four points on four assists. Obviously, I m not going to play with those guys, up-and-down hockey. I don t think I would even have a chance, but I can play another kind of hockey and have a better chance at that. Slowed by an energy-sapping virus that has nagged him since before the playoffs started, Jagr did the one thing that benefited him most in the twoday hiatus from hockey the Bruins earned after their 3-2 overtime victory in Game 1 Thursday night. He rested. Never got out of bed, Jagr said with a wry smile. Just slept all day, took my meds, and rested. Jagr is making his 17th NHL playoff appearance in his 19th NHL season. Asked if he was surprised by Jagr s longevity, Bruins coach Claude Julien replied, No, because he s a pretty committed individual. He s dedicated to conditioning and everything else, so not really [surprised]. I think he deserves a lot of credit for keeping himself going that long because it s certainly by the way he treats his body and how he trains and how he takes care of himself. But Jagr knows he has not been himself. He has not been the player he had hoped he could be for the Bruins when they acquired him April 2 from the Dallas Stars in exchange for forward Lane MacDermid, unsigned 2012 draft pick Cody Payne, and a conditional 2013 draft pick. Well, I ve played better, that s for sure, Jagr said with a laugh. But you never know. I hope I can feel better. I hope I can score more. But that s the way it is. It s not the first time and it s not going to be the last time. Everybody can play great when everything is good, he added. But you ve got to battle through when things don t always go your way. Asked if it frustrated him not to be able to score more, Jagr paused. It s not the first time it has happened to me, so you have to work hard, he said. It doesn t really matter how many goals you ve scored before, the confidence builder comes with any play; any good play can give you the confidence. Any good pass that leads to a goal can change everything around, but you have to work hard and you have to go to it. I m not going to give up. Of course, I would love to help this team a little more than I am right now. The only thing I can do about it is just to work hard. Jagr, who registered 14 goals (six on the power play) and 12 assists in 34 games with the Stars for a team-leading 26 points, struggled to record totals in 11 regular-season contests with the Bruins. In the series against the Maple Leafs, Jagr compiled that line, earning a promotion to the second line centered by Patrice Bergeron late in the series. He s really helped us a lot, as far as having a guy that is strong on the puck, he s good down low, cycling pucks and everything else, Julien said. He s a threat; every time he s on the ice you can see teams playing him hard. They put some big guys out there because he is a big body and he s hard to move. He s been a good addition to us and we moved him up to Bergeron s line the last couple of games. And that line, whether it s by coincidence or whatever, has started to produce. Julien, however, disagreed with the notion that the grueling conference quarterfinal against the Leafs seemed to take a toll on Jagr. The first round didn t take a toll on him, Julien countered. Again, he was tired, maybe a little bit at one point during the game. But he s had to battle the flu, and I said that a long time ago. He s not beaten down, he s certainly not done. If the time comes where I see he needs a little bit of a break, I ll make sure to give it to him, whether it s practice or skipping some shifts. Right now he seems to feel OK to go and I check with him on those situations. He s handled it well. Jagr seemed to sputter in Game 1 vs. the Rangers. Julien noted how at one point in the third, a couple of quick shifts, he looked tired. But then he came back in overtime and had good wheels again. So maybe giving him time to recover again a little bit... say what you want, he s not 25 anymore. Boston Globe LOADED: Boston Bruins Bruins confident after solid Game 2 victory over Rangers Steve Silva, Boston.com Staff May 19, :33 PM The Bruins took command of the Eastern Conference semifinals with a 5-2 win over the Rangers Sunday at TD Garden, putting them up 2-0 heading to New York. The Bruins took a 3-2 lead into the third period and cruised past the Rangers in the third when Brad Marchand scored 26 seconds into the period, and Milan Lucic put the game away. Tuukka Rask was solid in goal, especially in the second period when he made a string of saves to keep the Bruins in the game. "Yeah, that s what you have to do sometimes," Rask said. "We were not at our best in the second period. We gave up a lot of odd man opportunities and a lot of turnovers and stuff, but they only got one goal so something positive came out of that period... "There was plenty of two-on-ones, three-on-twos, and then a couple of turnovers from our D [defensemen]. Then they made some plays from behind the net. I was just in front of the puck, it wasn t textbook all the time. But despite that goal from [Rick] Nash, I was just jumping." Rask spoke about his confidence growing as his team goes deeper in the playoffs. "My confidence is always high," Rask said. "That's just how I try to be. No matter what happens, I try to stay calm and even keeled. Confidence can t go any lower or higher, I think." The play of the Bruins young defenseman continued to impress Rask. "Yeah, they just keep playing their game, that's all that we can ask from them," Rask said. "But we just have to make sure that they don't get too high. It s still playoff hockey, you don t want to get too carried away out there. But they're playing great." Bruins defenseman Johnny Boychuk scored what turned out to be the winning goal in the second period when he fired one past Rangers goalie Henrik Lundqvist. "It was definitely a screen," Boychuk said about his goal. "Bergy [Patrice Bergeron] did a good job getting to the front, and their D-man was their as well, but it was four on four. Marchy [Brad Marchand] did a good job by

getting in the zone, turned up and found me coming in, and all I had to do was hit the net because there was a couple of guys in front of him." Boychuk talked about being able to bounce back from the hit he took in the first game. "It s playoffs," Boychuk said. "You ve got to keep going, and you can t be worried about it, and you just do whatever you can for the team. Boychuk already has three goals in the playoffs. "You know, just hitting the net I guess, and sometimes it s luck," he said. "Just getting shots on net and hitting the net. Better chance to score when you hit the net." Boychuck spoke about the young defensemen playing well in this series. "I think skating with the puck [is key]," Boychuk said. "They ve been doing a good job skating and taking their ice when they get the chance and eliminating the turnovers again is a key and they re just playing smart They ve been amazing. They re making a case for themselves to stay in the lineup and that s what you need. You want to stay in the lineup and the way that they re playing, they ve been playing very, very good and responsible, and even in the D-zone I ve been watching they ve been battling hard and doing the right things and that s what you need. Bruins coach Claude Julien was also impressed by the play of his young defense. "At the stage we re in right now in the season, we re talking about the playoffs, the one thing you don t want to do is make a young defensemen come in and be afraid to play," Julien said. "You ve got to be willing to live with the consequences. The good part about that it I know they ve got some good upside to them. [Matt] Bartkowski was sent down at the end of the regular season, so he could continue to play because we really liked his game. [Torey] Krug s been a good player for Providence all year, we liked what we saw in him last year and when he was called up. It was just a matter of bringing those guys in, saying, Continue to do the things that you do well, because that will also give you success at this level. It s about giving them the confidence to do that. We have to trust that they are good enough in those areas that they re going to help us out. So far, they ve proven us right." Bruins forward Brad Marchand scored for the second game in a row, this time 26 seconds into the third period. "It s always good to get a couple-goal lead early in the third there," Marchand said. "Bergy [Patrice Bergeron] made a great play. I think we played pretty well after that to limit their opportunities and played a strong game." Marchand spoke about curbing his turnovers as the game progressed. "Yeah, I think I was definitely a little more aware of it," he said. "I think I was maybe a little overconfident. I thought I was controlling the puck pretty good last game, and it didn t seem to be going the same way. After that I tried to keep it a little more simple and make sure pucks were in deep." Bruins captain Zdeno Chara was also pleased with what he saw from his team in Game 2. "I thought we had everybody going, and we played on our toes," he said. "It s nice to get some contribution from the back end. You need that in the playoffs." Boston Globe LOADED: Boston Bruins Bruins beat Rangers in Game 2, 5-2 By Fluto Shinzawa May 19, 2013 By missing a connection with Zdeno Chara, Brad Marchand tossed away all of his team s first-period momentum. Ryan Callahan picked off Marchand s pass, blew through two half-hearted backchecks, and beat Tuukka Rask to tie Game 2 at 1-1 at 8:01 of the first period. Maybe I was a little overconfident, Marchand said. I was controlling the puck pretty good the last game. It seemed to be going the same way. After that, I tried to keep it a little more simple and get pucks in deep. Marchand got the message. In the second period, Marchand won a race for the puck to set up Johnny Boychuk for the winning goal. In the first minute of the third, Marchand gave the Bruins the space they needed by tapping a short-range shot past Henrik Lundqvist for a 4-2 lead. With Sunday s 5-2 win, the Bruins have a 2-0 series edge. They could grab a 3-0 lead with another win Tuesday at Madison Square Garden. This, of course, was the team that was half a period away from reserving tee times at The Country Club. Ten minutes, we could have been out, Boychuk said. Now we re up, 2-0, and we have to not go into New York and lay an egg. We have to go in there, battle hard, and make sure to win this next game. It s a crucial game for us. Marchand is one of the Bruins difference-makers. He touches the game in every area: even strength, power play, penalty kill. There are those extra layers of abrasiveness and punky behavior that drive opponents cuckoo. Game 2 was the Good Marchand overcoming Bad Brad. In the first period, with the Bruins up, 1-0, it wasn t Marchand s giveaway to Callahan the left wing was aiming for Chara at the left point that peeved his coach. It was how Marchand failed to slow down Callahan after he committed the turnover. He knows that defensively tonight, there were a couple things, Claude Julien said. Not so much the puck that didn t make it across on the first goal. But probably how he reacted to coming back. One of Marchand s hallmark traits, however, is his swagger. Some players lose their confidence and become afraid to make more mistakes. Their skates slow. Their sticks turn heavy. Not Marchand. Sometimes when you re overthinking, you put too much pressure on yourself, Julien said. It just weighs on you. Right now, it s almost like the young guys: Go out there and play. He s a quick player. He s a shifty player. He s very capable of doing that. In the second, with the score tied at 2-2, Marchand s hustle and smarts put the Bruins ahead for good. Patrice Bergeron won a neutral-zone faceoff against Derek Stepan. Marchand chased down the puck and read the play. He recognized that Callahan was defending him tightly. Both Michael Del Zotto and Dan Girardi had dropped back, giving the Rangers numbers in front of Lundqvist. Marchand s best play was going back up top to Boychuk. Bergeron had gone to the front of the net to engage Girardi. So when Marchand gave the puck to Boychuk, the defenseman had a clear shooting lane with a screen in front. With a rare wrist shot instead of his signature slapper, Boychuk snapped the puck through Bergeron s screen and past Lundqvist at 12:08, snapping the tie. Marchand s grunt work wasn t over. After Matt Bartkowski sealed off the wall against Stepan, the Bruins gained control of the puck and rushed through the neutral zone. Bergeron went one-on-one against Del Zotto. Marchand got Girardi tangled up by sprinting to the far post. When Bergeron s cross-ice pass arrived, Marchand had position on Girardi to tap in the feed at 0:26. The linemates legs through center ice gave them the scoring chance that Marchand buried. The Rangers offered little neutral-zone resistance in Game 2. The Bruins owned center ice. That s a huge part of our game, trying to use our speed to our advantage, Marchand said. I know if I m able to bust through the seams, Bergy s going to hit me. Then we ll get opportunities, and he knows the same. I think our whole team is definitely using that to our advantage right now. All that with chipping pucks in deep, we re a tough team to play against. Marchand s goal gave the Bruins the third-period energy they wanted. After that, they never lifted off the gas. Milan Lucic scored at 12:39 for a threegoal lead. I don t like our team when we play on our heels and we re just trying to protect a one-goal lead, Julien said. We ve got to extend the lead and extend it even more before we even think about protecting it. Our guys were

smart. They put pucks at the net. They went to the net hard. We won the battles for those loose pucks. We found a way to score those goals. The Bruins have a 2-0 series lead despite being without Dennis Seidenberg, Andrew Ference, and Wade Redden. The pre-series fear was that it would be the opposite scenario: The Rangers would take advantage and swipe the first two games. In retrospect, those defensemen can take more time to heal. Boston Globe LOADED: Boston Bruins Bruins look to hold serve in Game 2; Redden and Seidenberg still out Sunday, May 19, 2013 Steve Conroy The last two playoff series have begun the same for the Bruins. Against Washington last year and Toronto this year, the B's have captured both Games 1 at home. But for whatever reason, they haven't played as well in Games 2 and dropped both of them. With the B's up 1-0 over the New York Rangers going into today's Game 2 here at the Garden at 3 p.m., have they learned anything from their past? I'd hope so, said Shawn Thornton this afternoon. With the experience we had in the last round, we should know that they're going to come out better, they're going to come out harder and we're going to have to match that, if not take it a notch above. For the first minutes of Game 1, the two sides seemed to be feeling each other out until the B's scored and all of a sudden the game opened up. Thornton hopes the B's will be able to dictate things a little earlier in the game. I hope that we're going to be ready for whatever comes our way and we're going to push the pace, said Thornton. That being said, I thought we were going to push the pace in last game, but there was a little bit of a feeling out period. It's two teams that are strong defensively, so sometimes it comes off like that way but I think we need to have our tempo going right away today. Game 1 looked like a ping-pong match between the blue lines in the first period, but the B's could change that just by getting pucks deep. We have to limit turnovers, said Thornton. That's huge for us. When we turn pucks over at the blue line, it kind of takes away from our game. We get caught reeling backwards and not getting changes that we want. Establishing our forechecks and getting pucks in, that's the biggest thing for us. Thornton's fourth line has been getting decent minutes and had been enjoying good offensive zone time, but he'd like to produce a little bit more than that. We talked about it. We've been close and it would be nice if we could take some pressure off some of the big boys with a couple of goals from our line, said Thornton. Both Dennis Seidenberg and Wade Redden skated this morning but are out again today. But Johnny Boychuk, battered with pucks and bodies in Game 1, said he's ready to go now. I feel pretty good now that I've got a couple of days off. I've got some bumps and bruises, just like the regular playoffs. But a couple of days off help, said Boychuk. He doesn't plan on altering anything about his game. You can't, because as soon as you do that, bad things happen, said Boychuk. You have to go out there and play your game and know there's always going to be bumps and bruises along the way. It's part of the game and you have to battle your way through it. If you get hurt, you get hurt. You try to battle through it no matter what. Boston Herald LOADED: Boston Bruins Game 2 final: Bruins 5, Rangers 2 Sunday, May 19, 2013 Mark Daniels Game 2 of this Eastern Conference semifinal matchup between the Bruins and Rangers had all the makings of another tightly-contested battle. Early on, the Rangers refused to go away, pestering the Bruins with matching goals in the first two periods. But then the B s did something they ve rarely done in the playoffs this year they made things easy on themselves. The Bruins got a go-ahead score from Johnny Boychuk late in the second and then added two goals in the third to come away with a 5-2 win. The B s now head into New York for Tuesday s Game 3 with a 2-0 series lead. Things didn t start off so easy. The B s opened up the game with a goal from Torey Krug at 5:28. After Adam McQuaid dove and broke up a Brian Boyle breakaway, the B s headed down the ice and struck first. Like he did in Game 1, Krug beat Rangers goalie Henrik Lundqvist from the point. The rookie defenseman became the fourth Bruin to score two goals in his first two playoff games. But just like that, the Bruins lead evaporated. Off of a Brad Marchand turnover, Ryan Callahan beat Dougie Hamilton to the loose puck and immediately had the breakaway and the first period game-tying goal at 8:01. The second period opened up in similar fashion. Gregory Campbell gave the Bruins a 2-1 lead at 2:24. Krug had his hands all over this one again. The rookie ripped a shot from the point, but it bounced off Rangers defenseman Dan Girardi s skate. Campbell collected the rebound and beat Lundqvist with the backhand. Again, the Rangers refused to go away. This time they got a game-tying goal from Rich Nash. The bruising left winger busted through the Bruins defense and got by Zdeno Chara before putting the puck past Tuukka Rask at 3:20. But the B s got some offensive help from another defenseman and regained the lead thanks to Boychuk. The defenseman fired the puck past a screened Lundqvist at 12:08 to give the B s a 3-2 advantage. Marchand then made up for his first period gaff, opening the third period up with a goal. Patrice Bergeron started things off with a perfectly placed pass to a crashing Marchand. Much like he did in Game 1 s overtime, Marchand got his stick on the puck and beat Lundqvist to the left, just 26 seconds into the period. Milan Lucic added to the lead, at 12:39, knocking in David Krejci s rebound to give the Bruins a 5-2 lead. SECOND PERIOD Things certainly didn t slow down in the second period as the Bruins head into the third up, 3-2, over the Rangers. Much like the first period, the Bruins opened up the second with a goal. Torey Krug ripped a shot from the point. It hit a Rangers skate and Gregory Campbell knocked in the redirect at 2:24, to give the B's a 2-1 lead. As in the first period, the celebration was short-lived. Nearly a minute after Campbell s goal, Rick Nash scored his first goal of the playoffs at 3:20. The Rangers left winger busted through the B s defense, getting by Zdeno Chara, to beat Tuukka Rask top shelf. The B s got their first power play at 8:28 when Derick Brassard was whistled for hooking. The Bruins took one shot on net, had two blocked and missed the net with another. After the power play, Shawn Thornton went after Arron Asham, who had knocked down Chara. Both players got matching roughing penalties with 8:14 left in the period. The B s struck immediately during the 4-on-4 play. After the faceoff, Brad Marchand sent a pass to Johnny Boychuk, who fired it past Henrik Lundqvist for the score at 12:08.

Lundqvist was screened by Patrice Bergeron, as the puck sailed by him to give the Bruins a 3-2 advantage. In the opening minutes, the Bruins had a series of miscues. Ryan Callahan got another breakaway, this time off a Matt Bartkowski turnover, but his shot missed the net. Nash had a breakaway off a turnover but his shot was stopped by Rask. After the Nash goal, Chris Kelly and Derek Dorsett got matching roughing penalties. During the 4-on-4 play, Rask made a nice save on Ryan McDonagh. The Rangers outshot the Bruins, 16-10, in the period. FIRST PERIOD Hard work pays off. But one mistake can take it all away. The Bruins opened up today s Eastern Conference semifinal Game 2 matchup with the Rangers with a goal from rookie defenseman Torey Krug. Their lead was short-lived, however, as the Rangers capitalized on a mistake and responded. We re now headed to the second period tied, 1-1. Adam McQuaid did a great job of stopping a Brian Boyle breakaway, diving to break up the play. On the ensuing possession, the B s came down the ice and Krug, again, beat Rangers goalie Henrik Lundqvist from the point at 5:28. Krug now has two goals in his first two NHL playoff games after scoring in Game 1. Shortly afterward, a Bruins turnover led to a Rangers goal. Brad Marchand had the puck in the neutral zone but his pass was quickly broken up by Ryan Callahan. Callahan beat Dougie Hamilton to the loose puck and immediately had a breakaway. The right winger capped off the play with a nice move to put the puck past Tuukka Rask at 8:01. The Bruins came out firing in the opening minutes. Marchand had a near breakaway and McQuaid ripped a nice shot on net as the Bruins took the first three shots of the contest. The Rangers got the first power play of the game, at 9:16, when Rich Peverley was whistled for high-sticking. The B s penalty kill was outstanding. They took two shorthanded shots on net and allowed zero shots on Rask. New York got another power play at 17:31 when Zdeno Chara was sent to the box for slashing. The Rangers recorded one shot on goal, during the two-minute penalty, but failed to score. The Bruins are outshooting the Rangers, PREGAME The Bruins are without defensemen Dennis Seidenberg (left leg), Andrew Ference (left foot) and Wade Redden (undisclosed injury) again today. Before the game, Claude Julien said that though Redden and Seidenberg skated this morning, neither will be in today s Game 2 lineup against the New York Rangers. It was thought that Redden, who also skated yesterday, was a possibility. Instead, Julien will have to rely on three rookies Dougie Hamilton, Matt Bartkowski and Torey Krug - again. The pairings, in warm-ups, were the same as they were in Game 1: Zdeno Chara-Hamilton, Bartkowski-Johnny Boychuk and Krug-Adam McQuaid. The Bruins' lines looked the same as well. Boston Herald LOADED: Boston Bruins Bruins praise Tuukka Rask after Game 2 win Sunday, May 19, 2013 Mark Daniels At the end of the regular season Henrik Lundqvist was named a finalist for the Vezina Trophy. Tuukka Rask was not. At the end of the Eastern Conference quarterfinals, Lundqvist shutout the Washington Capitals in the final two games to advance. Rask let up four goals in the Bruins Game 7 overtime win against Toronto. Those are a couple of the reasons why Lundqvist came into this semifinal matchup with the Bruins with a lot of hype. But after today s Game 2, 5-2, win over the Rangers, Rask was the one receiving the praise. Well we ve got a lot of confidence in Tuukka, Bruins coach Claude Julien said. And if you compare both there s no doubt that Henrik Lundqvist has more experience than Tuukka does, but that doesn t change anything. Our guys have done a great job in front of him, and what he showed in the second period like I said it could have been a totally different game had he not stood tall for us in the second period. So he allowed us to recover and play a much better period in the third. He s been good for us all year, and our guys have lots of confidence in him. So it s about having confidence in your goaltender and finding ways to get through the other one. After Rick Nash tied the game, at 3:20 of the second, it was the second lead that Rask and the Bruins gave up. But after that, Rask and the defense settled down. As he stymied the Rangers and finished with 35 saves, Bruins got to Lundqvist over and over again. Though the Rangers outshot the Bruins, 16-to-9, in the second, Rask held on strong and earned praise from his teammates. He s incredible," Brad Marchand said. You got to give him a lot of credit. He made a few really, really big saves in the second period that gave us an opportunity to come back and take the lead again. We definitely wouldn t be where we are right now if it wasn t for him. Boston Herald LOADED: Boston Bruins Bruins top Rangers to take 2-0 series lead Sunday, May 19, 2013 Stephen Harris Consistency hasn t been the Bruins benchmark this season, but they have now delivered two strong playoff efforts in succession against the New York Rangers. The Bruins topped the Rangers, 5-2, this afternoon in Game 2 of their second-round series at the Garden, and take a 2-0 series lead to New York for Games 3 and 4. Once we stopped turning the puck over at the blue line, I think we definitely started to frustrate them, said Bruins winger Milan Lucic. The Bruins held a 3-2 lead after two periods, thanks to goals from rookie sensation Torey Krug (No. 2), Gregory Campbell (1) and Johnny Boychuk (3). Just 26 seconds into the third, Patrice Bergeron made a brilliant feed from the right corner, setting up Brad Marchand s goalmouth tip-in that made it 4-2. Then at 12:39, Lucic reached from behind the net to tap in a puck left loose in the crease, and it was 5-2. Tuukka Rask again outplayed Rangers goalie Henrik Lundqvist. I ve been pretty calm out there, said Rask. To me, the biggest thing is staying calm and well positioned. Rask stopped 35 shots while Lundqvist (27 saves) allowed five goals in a game for the first time in 152 games. We expect them to come harder than ever (in Game 3), said Lucic. You know MSG is going to be rocking, too, so we re looking forward to it. The Bruins dominated the first several minutes of the game, taking a quick 1-0 lead on the 22-year-old Krug s second goal in two playoff games. At 5:28, he deftly collected a Nathan Horton pass near the top of the left circle, moved a stride or two closer and snapped the puck past Lundqvist low on the far side. But the early momentum was gone at 8:01, when Marchand gave the puck away to Ryan Callahan just inside the Rangers line. Callahan pursued the puck down the left side outskating B s defenseman Dougie Hamilton to

get to it first then broke in alone on Rask. He cut hard left-to-right across the goalmouth and had an easy toss-in past the faked-out goalie. The rest of the period was back-and-forth and fairly even, with the shots for the B s after 20 minutes. The B s were guilty a few times, as was the case all season, of wasting promising chances by over-passing. The contest remained close in the second period. The Bruins reclaimed the lead at 2:25, when Krug made a deft play to control a cross-point pass from Adam McQuaid with his back skate, kicking the puck ahead to his blade. His shot was blocked in front by Dan Girardi, but the puck bounced perfectly in front to Campbell, who lofted a backhander under the crossbar to make it 2-1. But the Rangers again answered quickly. At 3:20, Zdeno Chara made a mistake in neutral ice attempting a sweep check against Nash. When Chara failed to get the puck, Nash was past him, breaking in alone on right wing as Chara chased behind. Nash finished with a forehand snap from the right goalmouth to the far top corner. The see-saw battle moved ahead, and at 12:08, Boychuk gave the B s a 3-2 lead on a wicked wrist shot from just above the right circle. It was so hard that it cleanly beat the great Lundqvist on the glove side. This time, the Rangers didn t answer right away, as Rask made good stops on Ryan McDonough and Carl Hagelin. Boston Herald LOADED: Boston Bruins Brad Marchand records goal, assist as confidence rises Sunday, May 19, 2013 Monday, May 20, 2013 Steve Conroy Bruins Notebook Something seemed to be wrong with Brad Marchand in the first-round series against the Toronto Maple Leafs. He had no jump, no energy to his game, which is based on such things. But all of a sudden, he was part of that shift that produced Patrice Bergeron s Game 7 overtime goal, and his game immediately returned. In Game 1 of the Eastern Conference semifinals against the New York Rangers, he assisted on Torey Krug s equalizer and scored the OT gamewinner on a great feed from Bergeron. And in yesterday 5-2 win over the Rangers in Game 2, he notched an assist on Johnny Boychuk s secondperiod goal that held up as the game-winner, then scored a huge insurance goal just 26 seconds into the third period. As could be said for the whole team, it wasn t a perfect night for Marchand. His turnover at the offensive blue line led to the Rangers first goal, scored by Ryan Callahan. But coach Claude Julien likes what he s seeing from Marchand. He seems to be skating better, Julien said. He might ve seemed a little slow at times; I think sometimes when you re overthinking, you put too much pressure on yourself, it just weighs on you. Right now, it s just a matter of going out there, almost the same thing as the young guys, go out there and play. He s a quick player, he s a shifty player, and he s very capable of doing that. He knows defensively tonight there were a couple things, not so much the puck that didn t make it across on the first goal, but probably how he reacted to coming back. There s certain things we talk about, but you ve got to encourage those guys to keep doing the things that they ve been good at doing. To me, he s played two solid games for us. Marchand is certainly feeling better about his game. I just feel like I ve got my legs a little bit more and I ve got my confidence, Marchand said. I m trying to control (the puck) instead of just throwing it away when I don t have a play. I m getting some bounces and it definitely makes it easier playing with Bergy and (Jaromir Jagr). And he didn t let the turnover eat into that confidence. Later in the game, he was able to lose Callahan just inside the blue line to set up Boychuk s goal. It s tough when you turn the puck over, but it was early in the game. You just got to try to bounce back, Marchand said. Goal attained In pregame interviews, both Shawn Thornton and Daniel Paille said that it s nice that they ve been grinding out their shifts and playing pretty well, but a fourth-line goal would be nice, too. And almost on cue, linemate Gregory Campbell popped one in on a rebound off Rangers defenseman Dan Girardi s skate, giving the B s a brief 2-1 lead in the second period. It s a really good feeling, Campbell said. It s a lot of pressure for those top guys. (David) Krejci s line and Bergy s line of late have been relied on heavily to produce. Those guys are filled with talent and ability to score goals at big times, but it s a tough job, especially when you re playing a really sound defensive team and really good goaltender. Our line put some pressure on ourselves to help out in that aspect. Campbell also obliged the Rangers Derek Dorsett when, with 6:51 left, the latter clearly wanted to get some momentum for his team going into Game 3 and the two dropped the gloves. There s not much to it. We re up 5-2, and in a case like that nobody really wants to back down, Campbell said. Still sidelined Julien said that both Dennis Seidenberg (lower body) and Wade Redden (upper body) skated in the morning, but neither defenseman was ready to play.... The B s actually blocked more shots than the Rangers by a margin.... Krug became the fourth Bruin to score a goal in each of his first two playoff games. The others are Cooney Weiland (1929), Don Gallinger (1943) and Tyler Seguin (2011). Seguin and Gallinger both had three in their first two playoff games.... Yesterday s Banner Captain was state trooper Chris Dumont, who was involved in the rescue of transit police officer Richard Donohue in the Watertown shootout with the Boston Marathon bombing suspects. Boston Herald LOADED: Boston Bruins Fooled Tuukka Rask recovers Sunday, May 19, 2013 Monday, May 20, 2013 Mark Daniels It was a case of mistaken identity, and it cost Tuukka Rask a save. As Rick Nash barreled through the Bruins defensive zone, at first glance the Bruins goalie thought it was Taylor Pyatt. Though the two players tape their sticks in a similar fashion, their shot preferences are different. In Nash s case, he likes to go low. As soon as Rask realized he was wrong, the puck was in the net, the Rangers tied the game and Rask was annoyed. It was the second lead that he had given up, but Rask didn t let the frustration set in. He knows all too well about the goalie in the opposing crease. He s heard all about Henrik Lundqvist, the Vezina Trophy finalist who carried the Rangers in the quarterfinals, before this series. So after yesterday s game-tying goal at 3:20 of the second period, Rask did the only thing he could do stay focused and stop everything. Rask did just that the rest of the way, finishing with 35 saves to lead the Bruins to a 5-2 Game 2 win over the Rangers at the Garden. I just try to stay composed throughout the game and, no matter what happens, try to do my job, Rask said. I was riled after that (goal) because I thought it was Pyatt, with the same type of tape job. I wasn t expecting that
