3 College Rivalries run Deep American sports enthusiasts undoubtedly have watched college football on any given Saturday and seen the streams of fans in the crowd displaying with passion their team s colors. Just like in college football, college hockey has its share of rivalries, and a number of the Condors have been right in the middle of them. C Gino Guyer grew up in Coleraine, Minnesota, near Duluth, but instead of playing for the University of Minnesota-Duluth Bulldogs, he elected to play for the rival University of Minnesota Golden Gophers. I grew up near Duluth, but was always a Gophers fan, said Guyer. It was the Gophers games that were always on TV, so I watched them more often. Guyer and D Stu Bickel played for the University of Minnesota, while RW Nick Kemp and Sharp suited up for Minnesota-Duluth. Playing against Duluth was an exciting experience, said Guyer. But as much of a heated rivalry it was, I had a lot of friends that played for Duluth, so there are really no hard feelings at towards Bulldogs players. As much as you would think the players on Minnesota and Minnesota-Duluth would take part in friendly banter, another rivalry has in fact stirred in the Condors locker room; one between conferences. Six conferences make up Division I NCAA hockey, but there are four that consider themselves part of the Big Four: the Western Collegiate Hockey Association (WCHA), Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference (ECAC), Central Collegiate Hockey Association (CCHA) and Hockey East. All nine Condors on the roster with collegiate ties, plus Anaheim Ducks call-up C MacGregor Sharp, were members of teams in the Big Four, and each player will argue that their conference is better than the others. In the case of the Condors, the debate is between WCHA and CCHA alumni. The Minnesota players have been representing the WCHA, while D Mark Mitera (University of Michigan), RW Dan Sexton (Bowling Green State University), C Adam Naglich (University of Alaska-Fairbanks) and D Ray Eichenlaub (University of Miami) are on the CCHA side. If you go strictly by national champions, then it s no contest with the WCHA holding a advantage in that category. But try using that fact and the CCHA enthusiasts will say it s all in the past. Come NCAA Tournament time of the college hockey variety in March, the debate over the two conferences should reach its pinnacle. There s definitely been talk between the boys over which conference is better, but it s all in good fun, said Guyer. We re all on the same team now, so we put that behind us, but it s still a fun to topic to bring up.
