3 BALCARRES RAISES $67,000 FOR ARENA THROUGH CAMECO HOCKEY DAY IN SASKATCHEWAN Balcarres turned Cameco Hockey Day in Saskatchewan into a week-long celebration of hockey and community spirit. When the final buzzer sounded Sunday, the host organizing committee announced a profit of $67,295 to help cover renovations to their 51-year-old 2018 BALCARRES facility. Cameco Hockey Day in Saskatchewan travels to a different community each year to help raise funds for the local arena. The event is a partnership between Cameco, the Saskatchewan Hockey Association (SHA) and the host community. Balcarres succeeded on the strength of local volunteers and sponsors from throughout the region, said Craig Geisler, head of the local organizing committee. It wasn t just the rink board and minor hockey that did this, he said, applauding the dance club and mixed martial arts studio also housed in the arena. Everyone in the community has stepped up to do this for the youth in Balcarres and it s been a huge success. Weekend highlights included a banquet featuring five-time Stanley Cup champ Grant Fuhr and long-time NHL scout Barry Trapp of Balcarres; a youth skills clinic conducted by the SJHL s Melville Millionaires; an SJHL showdown between Melville and Battlefords; plus midget AAA, junior B and senior action. The rink is definitely the hub for Balcarres in the wintertime, added Geisler. With all of the youth groups that use it, I couldn t imagine if we didn t have the rink here. There d probably be no youth in the community and if you don t have youth in your community, you re definitely not going to succeed. SPECIAL GUEST, GRANT FUHR WAS ON HAND TO SHARE STORIES AT FRIDAY s BANQUET Cameco and the SHA spent eight months working closely with the organizing committee. On-site volunteers in Balcarres included Cameco CEO Tim Gitzel who made himself at home behind the grill. I was back there flipping burgers and it was a lot of fun, he said. Whether it s working in the kitchen or cleaning the ice, people here stepped up. That s what Saskatchewan volunteering is all about. 5 JUNIOR A HOCKEY SHOWCASE BRINGS SASKATCHEWAN AND MANITOBA LEAGUE s TOGETHER FOR TWO DAY EVENT The opportunity to bring together the top Junior A players from Saskatchewan and Manitoba was to good to pass up. The Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League (SJHL) and Manitoba Junior Hockey League (MJHL) came together for a two (2) day event on January 15 and 16 in Regina s Co-operators Centre. The ideas was to take the best players from each league and place them on three (3) separate all-star teams, based on age. Those age categories would be two (2) teams of players born in 1997 or 1998 and one (1) team of players born 1999 or The teams would wear league colors and emblems and were named after notable NHL alumni from the MJHL and SJHL. The MJHL teams were named after Ryan Garbutt, Ed Belfour and Travis Zajac. Meanwhile the SJHL s teams were Jaden Schwartz, Willie Mitchell and Chris Kunitz. The SJHL would get the best of the MJHL all-stars, winning five (5) of the six (6) games. Full recap of the event can be viewed HERE. Results from the event can be seen below or by clicking HERE.
