3 JOANIE Q. MILHOUS HEAD COACH 9th SEASON WILLIAM AND MARY 91 Now entering her ninth season as head coach Joanie Q. Milhous has continued to build upon her goal of making Villanova field hockey into one of the most respected programs in the Big East Conference. Milhous enters 2003 with a record in eight years of coaching at Villanova and a career record in 12 seasons. Coming off one of the most successful seasons in Villanova history, Milhous has led the Wildcats to the Big East Championship game for the past two seasons, following an eleven year drought. In 2002, Villanova notched a 4-1 record in Big East play, their best conference showing since Earning a No. 2 seed in the Big East tournament, the Wildcats defested Boston College 5-4 in overtime, to mark the second consecutive year the Wildcats defeated the Eagles in overtime to advance to the championship game. On Wednesday Sept , Milhous earned her 59th victory as Villanova s head coach and became the all-time winningest field hockey coach at Villanova when the Wildcats defeated West Chester, 3-1, at Villanova Stadium. In May of 1995, Milhous arrived on the Main Line after a brief four-year coaching stint at nearby Cabrini College. In just four years at Cabrini, she completely turned the program around. After recording only one win in her first season, Milhous closed her career at Cabrini with an 11-win season in 1994, earning her 1994 Pennsylvania Athletic Conference Coach of the Year honors. Milhous accomplishments at Villanova have followed a similar trend. In her fourth season at the helm, Milhous guided the Wildcats to their most successful season in nine seasons, posting a 13-7 record overall. The 13 wins was the most by a Villanova squad since the 1988 season when the Cats went In the past four seasons Milhous has compiled 49 victories highlighted by the two Big East Championship appearances and the 1999 Big East Coach of the Year award. One of the trademarks of Villanova s play has been their offensive explosiveness. Over the last four seasons the Wildcats have averaged 2.88 goals per game in a process of rewriting the record books. Four offensive records career goals, career points, career assists, and team goals have all been shattered. In addition to her role as the head field hockey coach, Milhous served as the women s lacrosse head coach from During her three seasons directing the women s lacrosse program the Wildcats posted a record. At the end of the 2000 season she stepped down from her position in order t o concentrate entirely on field hockey. Milhous graduated in 1991 from the College of William & Mary where she earned a bachelor of arts degree in psychology. While attending William & Mary she was a standout for both the field hockey and women s lacrosse programs. In field hockey Milhous was a two-time Regional All-American and twotime All-Conference selection, as well as being chosen team captain for her senior season. She ended her career as the seventh leading scorer in Tribe history. In addition to her success on the field hockey field, she also earned equal rewards for her play in lacrosse. After being named team captain, she also received Regional All-American and All-Conference honors. In each of her four seasons playing lacrosse, the Tribe was nationally ranked. She was voted to participate in the North/South Senior All-Star game in both field hockey and lacrosse. Milhous also served as President of the Big East Conference Field Hockey Site Committee in 1998 and was a board member of the Philadelphia Lacrosse Association from , representing the Philadelphia area colleges. A native of Wynnewood, Pa., Milhous and her husband Stowe reside in Gulph Mills, Pa. with their three children Stowe Jr. and newborn twins Tucker and Madison. 4 ANDREA GRASSO ASSISTANT COACH 2nd SEASON DELAWARE 02 GINA ROSSI ASSISTANT COACH 3rd SEASON 00 Andrea Grasso returns to the sidelines for the 2002 season as a second-year assistant coach. Last season, Grasso worked with the Wildcat defensive corps which tallied three shutouts and allowed just over two goals per game. Grasso joined the Wildcats after a four-year career as a goalkeeper at the University of Delaware. Due to an injury in the Fall of 2001, Grasso contributed as a student-assistant coach. She worked primarily with the goalkeepers and defensive unit. Grasso graduated in May of 2002 with a degree in Communications and a minor in English. She resides in Haddonfield, N.J. Gina Rossi rejoins the Wildcats for her second stint as an assistant coach. Rossi also served as an assistant coach from , and is no stranger to the program. She played for Milhous from During her career on the Main Line she played in 91 games and earned All-Big East Second Team honors following the 1999 season. Rossi was also recognized as a Regional All-American after her senior season and played in the NFHCA North/South All-Star game. She led the Wildcats with a team-high 46 points on 19 goals and eight assists as a senior. She currently ranks seventh on the career goal chart. Rossi graduated from Villanova in the Spring of 2000 with a degree in human services. She currently teaches at the Timothy School in Berwyn, Pa., a non-profit private school for children with autism. She resides in Norristown, Pa FIELD HOCKEY PAGE 4 ASSISTANT COACHES

5 Villanova s Field Hockey team enters its 29th year in 2003, 13 years removed from its last BIG EAST Championship. But under the direction of Joanie Q. Milhous, the Wildcats continue to show steady improvement, and are looking to build upon a 2002 finish that saw them get as close as ever to that elusive second title. Milhous begins her ninth season at the helm, and her last five in a row have been above.500. Her career record at Villanova now stands at In 2002, Milhous guided her squad to an 11-9 record, including a 4-1 mark in BIG EAST play. The Cats advanced to the championship game of the BIG EAST Tournament, where they were defeated 3-1 by UConn. It marked the second consecutive season that Villanova finished second in the annual conference tournament. Six talented newcomers will blend with 13 returning letterwinners to lead this year s deep Wildcat squad towards its goal of a BIG EAST Championship. And with just three seniors on this year s team, the timing may be right for Milhous to solidify Villanova as a BIG EAST power for years to come. GOALKEEPER Nowhere will the presence of the class of 2002 be missed more than in Villanova s own goal. Meghan Helwig started every game in her four years on the Main Line, and her departure leaves the Wildcats with their biggest question mark of the 2003 season. Helwig earned All-BIG EAST Second Team honors following her senior year in which she recorded a goals against average of 2.24 with two shutouts. It will be up to a pair of highly-touted freshmen to fill the void left by Helwig. The preseason battle for the starting spot will take place between Erin Scott (Malvern, Pa./West Chester East) and Alex Whalen (Basking Ridge, N.J./Ridge). DEFENSE The strength of the Wildcat defense is a key for the team this year, as it looks to keep the pressure off of the two freshman goalkeepers. And there is no one better to have at the head of that defense than junior Vanessa Pizzulli, a 2003 Preseason All-BIG EAST selection. Pizzulli started all 20 games during her sophomore season, notching career highs in goals with two and points with 13. She tied for the team lead in assists, and was named to the All-BIG EAST Second Team. Complimenting Pizzulli will be junior Simone Schunk and sophomore Sarah Francis. Schunk, considered one of the team s top backs, saw action in 20 games last year, with 19 starts to her credit. Francis played well during her freshman campaign, scoring seven points. Sophomores Steph Grejtak, Natalie Balthrop and Jen Gondek will provide depth to the defense. All three saw time last year, with Grejtak scoring a goal. Newcomer Sarah Way (Lancaster, Pa./Manheim Township) will also see time on the defensive unit. MIDFIELD Senior Colleen Helms returns for her final season to anchor the midfield. Helms has started all 60 games since her arrival three years ago, and has added 19 points to a stellar career that is most notably praised for defense. Milhous s other two midfield starters will Senior forward Leah Lisausky come from a pool of players. She expects freshmen Megan Foster (Berlin, N.J./Bishop Eustace) and Lauren Campanelli (Langhorne, Pa./Neshaminy) to make immediate impacts at the position. In addition, Grejtak, Balthrop and freshman Sara Schmidt (Mullica Hill, N.J./Wilmington Friends) will see time at midfield. FORWARD Villanova has Junior back Vanessa Pizzulli one of its best offensive arsenals in history this season, with three proven scorers returning at forward. At the top of the list is senior Christina Lugones, a 2002 STX/NFHCA First Team All-Region Selection, as well as an All-BIG EAST First Team Selection. And add a 2003 Preseason All-BIG EAST honor to her impressive list of accomplishments. Lugones tallied 25 points last season, including eight goals. Her nine assists tied for the team lead. In BIG EAST play, Lugones led all conference performers with 11 points. But do not think that the offense begins and ends with Lugones. Last year s leading goal scorer, Lisausky, is back to contribute at forward when she is not playing midfield. She finished the 2002 campaign with 12 goals and a team-leading 27 points. Lisausky finished second in the BIG EAST to her teammate (Lugones) in points during conference games. For her efforts she was named to the All-BIG EAST Second Team. Adding even more offense at the position is sophomore Rory Rogers. The Rosemont native recorded nine goals and four assists for a 22- point freshman effort. Rogers proved to be a clutch performer as well, posting her second career hat trick in the BIG EAST Tournament semifinals against Boston College. The strength of Villanova s forwards lies not only in their starters, but in their depth as well. Sophomores Gina DeMaestri, Katie DiLullo and Casey Whalen return at the position. SCHEDULE Once again, the Wildcats will play a challenging schedule, which will provide excellent competition en route to a third consecutive appearance in the BIG EAST Tournament. The season gets underway in California, with games against Pacific and Stanford, on August 30-31, respectively. The rest of Villanova s out of conference schedule features road games against Lafayette, Delaware, Drexel, Virginia Commonwealth, Pennsylvania and Penn State. The Leopards and Nittany Lions both ranked in the top 25 in the final NFHCA poll. In addition, the Cats will play host to West Chester, St. Joseph s, Monmouth and La Salle. The usual BIG EAST Conference slate begins on September 20 with a trip to play the defending conference champion, and No. 15 ranked, Connecticut. Villanova will also travel to Rutgers and Syracuse, before playing their final two BIG EAST games at home, in the month of October, against Boston College and Providence. The BIG EAST Tournament is scheduled for November 8-9, at Alumni Stadium in Chestnut Hill, Massachusetts FIELD HOCKEY PAGE 5 SEASON OUTLOOK

24 ACADEMIC SUPPORT: A WORD FROM DR. DAN REGAN ACADEMIC SUPPORT FACULTY REPRESENTATIVE Twenty-eight years ago Villanova University was one of the leaders among NCAA Division I schools in recognizing the need for providing academic support for its student-athletes. This is a University which treasures its outstanding academic reputation and is equally proud of its student-athletes who represent Villanova every year in intercollegiate contests. Today, college athletes are expected to be involved in their sports and in training all year long. Time demands are extraordinary. The Office of Academic Support helps our student-athletes to manage these athletic demands without sacrificing their academic careers. At Villanova, the Office of Academic Support reports to the Academic Vice-President. It works with the Athletic Department, whose directors and coaches have always understood the primacy of academics. The entire University community is proud of the fact that all the student-athletes who stay at our University for their entire careers graduate with as fine a degree as any in the country. The Office of Academic Support works in conjunction with the many offices of academic support on campus available to all students. Moreover, with its Freshman Mentoring program and academic tutors, the Academic Support staff oversees the academic progress of Villanova s studentathletes throughout the year. Villanova s Athletic Department has never lost sight of the mission of its University. The faculty, alumni, administrators, and students can be assured that this tradition of excellence continues. Dr. Dan Regan Academic Support Faculty Representative OFFICE OF ACADEMIC SUPPORT The Office of Academic Support is located in the Jake Nevin Field House. Dr. Dan Regan serves as the Academic Support Faculty Representative and works in conjunction with Associate Director, Nancy White, Assistant Director, Roxie Nurse, and Intern, Amy Miller. Collectively, the Office of Academic Support provides comprehensive academic support to all Villanova student-athletes. A computer facility, located in the Office of Academic Support, is available to all student-athletes. The facility offers fully equipped computer work stations with direct access to the campus network. For the convenience of the student-athletes, a laptop program has been established that allows student-athletes to borrow a laptop for an extended period of time, including weekend road trips during the respective season. In an attempt to help freshman adjust to college life, both academically and personally, all incoming student-athletes are required to participate in the Freshmen Mentoring Program. Each freshmen is assigned to a graduate mentor who will assist them throgh an individualized academic monitoring program through the year by meeting on a weekly basis. The Office of Academic Support also provides tutorial support for studentathletes in every academic discipline offered at the University. Tutorial sessions in math for Arts & Science majors, business calculus and math analysis are held weekly at the Academic Resource Center. ACADEMIC RESOURCE CENTER The Villanova Department of Athletics recently expanded Academic Support s domain into the newly renovated stadium press box. With the addition of a new infrastructure during the summer of 1999, the department s new Academic Resource Center (ARC) was formed with the intent of providing an efficient and comfortable learning environment to serve as an extension of the Office of Academic Support, which insures academic success for all student-athletes. The benefits of the ARC include: A more personally tailored academic support system. Computer equipped study hall housing laptop computers. Internet and network acccess with each computer Increased space for freshmen-mentoring. Conference area for lectures and study hall. Private study areas ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE Villanova student-athletes continue to excel in the classroom. During the academic year Wildcat student-athletes produced an overall grade point average of As a team, field hockey produced two semesters with a GPA of 3.0 or better. For their effort, nine players were honored as Big East Academic All-Stars with eight team members named to the prestigous NFHCA Division I Academic All-Star team. During her seven seasons as a head coach, Joanie Q. Milhous has coached 71 Big East Academic All-Stars and 20 NFHCA Division I National Academic All- Stars.
