30 MATTHEW FORSLUND D.O.B. : Name of your favorite NHL player and why? : My favorite player in the NHL is New Jersey goaltender Martin Brodeur. He has been a great goaltender and also a winner in his career but for me most importantly he works very hard, has fun with the game and has been a great teammate. What is your goal (objective) by coming to the Pee Wee Tournament? : I would like to get out of the tournament, experience a new culture, work and play hard. 33 CODY MURCH D.O.B. : Name of your favorite NHL player and why? : My favorite NHL player is Tim Thomas because of his background story and how he got the position as a NHL starter for the Boston Bruins. He played in the East Coast Hockey League, IHL, then he went to Finland, then he played in the AHL, went to Sweden and then was offered a chance to play for the Bruins and he accepted. He had heard a song that had just come out and he knew he could relate to it because he had one chance to be the goalie for Boston and he also thought that since he had only one shot at it he knew he had to enjoy it to. Also I like that he does whatever it takes to stay in shape and be flexible enough to play NHL hockey. For example, he does yoga to be flexible which defines his style of play. What is your goal (objective) by coming to the Pee Wee Tournament? : My goal for this tournament is to have fun and expand my knowledge of another culture. I want our team to win the championship this year for the first time and I want to help by playing my best. I also want to learn the different style of Canadian hockey. 4
2 TANNER SIEMENS D.O.B. : Name of your favorite NHL player and why? : My favorite player right now is Joe Corvo with the Carolina Hurricanes. He works hard and plays really strong defense. He is also able to jump in the play and add to the offense for the team. What is your goal (objective) by coming to the Pee Wee Tournament? : I m looking forward to the overall experience of going to a different country and staying with a new family. I m also looking forward to playing and seeing some really good hockey games with teams from around the world! 3 FORD HATCHETT D.O.B. : Name of your favorite NHL player and why? : My favorite player has to be Zdeno Chara. The reason Big Z is my favorite player is because he is a monster at 6 9 and I was told by the doctors that I could be 6 7. Another reason I like him is because of the way he plays. He is a shutdown defenseman but still has the hardest shot ever in the N.H.L. What is your goal (objective) by coming to the Pee Wee Tournament? : My goal of coming to the Pee Wee Tournament is first of all to win, but mostly I would like to be scouted to go to a prep school. The reason I would like to be scouted for a prep school is because I believe it is the 1st step to making it to Division 1 College hockey and even on to the NHL. I would also like to go to the Tournament because I have heard that it is the best tournament in the world and is once in a lifetime experience. Many people tell me that it is very cool to be in Quebec for Carnival. I think all around, this Tournament will help not only my hockey career, but it will also be a eye opening experience for the future. 5
11 MACKENZIE LANCASTER D.O.B. : Name of your favorite NHL player and why? : Hello, my name is MacKenzie Lancaster and I live in Charlotte, NC. My favorite NHL player is Evgeni Malkin. One of the reasons he is my favorite player is because he is a very good team player and I believe that is a key factor when playing high-level hockey. I also think that he is very good at setting up plays in the offensive zone and controls the puck very well. What is your goal (objective) by coming to the Pee Wee Tournament? :I am very excited about visiting Quebec City and am looking forward to learning about the culture and the people who live there. I hope to learn about the language, food, and history of the city, and also to experience hockey at an international level. I am also looking forward to living with my billet family, meeting new people, and making new friends. I want to thank the Carolina Hurricanes, Alain Desfosses, Josee and Serge Bouchard, my parents, the coaches, and everyone who will made it possible for me to attend this tournament! 19 NICHOLAS SKALUBA D.O.B. : Name of your favorite NHL player and why? : Pavel Datsyuk. The reason he is my favorite player is because he is strong on the puck and has won the trophy for best defensive skilled forward. He also has great capabilities on the ice. What is your goal (objective) by coming to the Pee Wee Tournament? : My objective to be in this tournament is to meet some new people and play against some great hockey teams from all over the world. 6
55 MITCHELL GLABICKI D.O.B.: Name of your favorite NHL player and why? : My favorite player is the Sergei Gonchar. He is my favorite player because he works hard and is always in the right position. He works hard and is always making good plays and crisp passes. What is your goal (objective) by coming to the Pee Wee Tournament? : By coming to this tournament my goal is to gain a sense of accomplishment while still having lots of fun doing it. 91 PHIL HEISSE D.O.B.: Name of your favorite NHL player and why? : My favorite NHL player would be Nicklas Lidstrom. He is my favorite because he plays the game smart, finds an open lane, and only hits when he knows he will be able to get the puck. He also very rarely gets caught flatfooted and he always moves his feet to be the first one to the puck. What is your goal (objective) by coming to the Pee Wee Tournament? : My goal (objective) for coming to the Quebec Peewee Tournament is to play against some of the best peewee teams and players in all of Canada and the world. To have the opportunity to become the best I can be after playing in this tournament. Finally, to come as close as possible to winning the Tournament Championship. 7
4 LINDA ESSERY D.O.B.: Name of your favorite NHL player and why? : My favorite NHL player is Alexander Ovechkin. He is my favorite player because he has amazing skills, he looks like he's having a lot of fun playing and he never gives up. I think he is a good example of a hard worker and I think he is someone younger players can look up to. Ovi puts the puck in the net, makes great plays, and he gets a lot of assists. He is always a scoring threat when he's on the ice. What is your goal (objective) by coming to the Pee Wee Tournament? : My goal in going to the Pee Wee Tournament is to win the tournament. I want to win by giving beautiful passes to set people up in front of the net and scoring lots of goals. I think we can win the tournament if the whole team tries as hard as they can and plays as a team. 10 KYLE MOORE D.O.B.: Name of your favorite NHL player and why? : Sidney Crosby was born on August 7, 1987 in Halifax, Nova Scotia to Troy and Trina Crosby. He got a knack for hockey at a very early age, shooting pucks in the basement when he was just two years old and putting numerous dents in the family dryer. His father was a goalie, who played major junior hockey with the Verdun Juniors and was a 12th round draft pick of the Montreal Canadians in Sidney Crosby is a star player he will do anything for he s team. The reason I put sidney Crosby is because he is a star player and a good player. He will help his team with anything that they need help with..also because he is the youngest captain in NHL and one of the best captains. He will get goals for is team and he will give many assists. Crosby took over the team as their best player on the ice.. He finished his rookie season with 39 goals and 63 assists for 102 points and second in the Calder Trophy. Crosby is a smart player because he make s smart play s. I also picked Sidney Crosby because he and my brother look alike and play alike. That s why I picked Sidney Crosby. What is your goal (objective) by coming to the Pee Wee Tournament? : One of my goals that I would like to achieve in Quebec is to learn to speak some French. I have been learning a little bit and hope to learn some more while I am there. I will try to speak French with my Billet family and learn their customs. Another one of my goals while in Quebec would be to see how well I can play against the Canadians. I have heard that they practice all the time and are real good. I want to skate on the ponds that they have there. My brother says that there is a pond near where my billet family lives. I will skate on the pond there to get more practice. I would also like to see the Carnival. I have heard it is real fun. I hope to make some new friends while I am there too. 8
13 GARRETT COLEY D.O.B.: Name of your favorite NHL player and why? : My favorite NHL player is Evgeni Malkin because he always knows what s happening in the play at all times, where the play s at and he knows when to skate the puck, pass the puck, and shoot and he always plays his position and he play in other positions and he knows where to be in front of the net to get scoring chances when he need but most importantly he s never a puck or ice hog. What is your goal (objective) by coming to the Pee Wee Tournament? : My objective from going to the tournament is to learn how to play with and against players that are faster and stronger and Winning every game. 14 AIDAN WORRALL D.O.B. : Name of your favorite NHL palyer and why? : My favorite NHL player is Sergei Samsonov, because he has great work ethic. Also, he is a fantastic stickhandler and has great knowledge of the game. Samsonov has an amazing shot giving him the nickname "beantown sniper", when he was playing for Boston. Sergei continues to excel in the game of hockey. I would like to see him never give up, no matter where he is in the future. What is your goal (objective) by coming to the Peewee Tournament? : My ultimate goal is to win the Quebec Peewee Tournament. Most importantly, I want to have a great experience billeting with Martin and Natacha and learninng about French culture. Throughout the Tournament, I want to have fun and have a good time with the kids. If we win the Tournament, it would be the most exciting thing in my life so far. If we don't win, I will have a blast eveyday. It is a win-win situation. 9
17 ERIC HIRSCHHAUT D.O.B.: Name of your favorite NHL player and why? : My favorite NHL player is Sidney Crosby. I like watching him live and on television when he goes on the ice to set up plays and score goals. I like his scoring touch. I like his defensive game. He is a great captain and leader of his team because he plays his best every shift. He is a great two-way player. What is your goal (objective) by coming to the Pee Wee Tournament? : My goal for the Pee Wee Tournament is to meet new people from different countries and play some of the best hockey teams in the world in a great atmosphere in arenas like Le Pepsi Colisee. I want to play hard, have fun and do my best. I want my team to win this tournament for all of the times they have lost to the Hershey Bears and for all of the players who have played on this select Quebec team over the years. I want to show that Carolina is a winning program for ice hockey. 21 HAYDEN WINCH D.O.B.: Name of your favorite NHL player and why? : Scott Hartnell of the Philadelphia Flyers is my favorite player. He is a solid, hard working player who seems to have all of the skills necessary to play for an extended period of time in the NHL. I watched him train in Minnesota during the off season at hockey camp and was very impressed with his work ethic. What is your goal (objective) by coming to the Pee Wee Tournament? : During my trip to Quebec, I plan on having fun playing pond hockey, going to the carnival, and playing in the snow. I was born in Orlando, Florida and currently live in Charleston, SC. I have never seen snow!! I am looking forward to playing some great hockey against players from different States/Countries. Meeting new people like my coaches, billet family and teammates is very important to me. I am also looking forward to the challenge of learning to speak a new language French/Canadian, and also learning about their culture. What would be most amazing for me would be to experience something that I hope to live out in the future, that being in the position of playing in an NHL rink in front of many people, as my dream is to be a professional hockey player. THANK YOU FOR THIS GREAT OPPORTUNITY! 10
26 WARD BETTS D.O.B.: Name of your favorite NHL player : My favorite player is Martin St. Louis. He is on the small side like me. Even though he had great numbers at the University of Vermont, he was not drafted. He plays for the Tampa Bay Lightning. He was the MVP in 2004, led the league in the most points and won the Stanley Cup. He works harder then any other player in the NHL. He gives 110 percent every game and practice which is why I admire him. You can tell when you watch him that he loves to play hockey. What is your goal (objective) by coming to the Pee Wee Tournament? : My purpose for going to the Quebec Peewee hockey tournament is to play hockey, not just in the rinks but pond hockey too. I hope to have a great experience, learn more about Quebec City and play my best hockey! 28 TYLER ROMEL D.O.B.: Name of your favorite NHL player : Eric Staal is my favorite player because he is a good leader and works hard. What is your goal (objective) by coming to the Pee Wee Tournament? : I was fortunate enough to participate in this Tournament and learn about Quebec last year. This year I would like to continue to learn about the language and culture of Quebec. On the ice my goal is to make last years experience count and perform better this year. I hope to improve as a player and also as a team to advance further in the Tournament than last year and hopefully win it all for everyone that s been involved with this team throughout the years. 11
88 JOSH WILKINS D.O.B. : Name of your favorite NHL player and why? : Mike Green of the Washington Capitals. I think he is a very smart player because he knows when to take that perfect shot from the defensive line. He has a very fast, quick, and accurate shot and is not afraid to take one! He can play very good defense, but have some offense in him too. What is your goal (objective) by coming to the Pee Wee Tournament? : My goal coming to the Pee Wee tournament is to be the best, strongest, player I can be. Since I'm a returning player, I want to help my teammates feel comfortable both on and off the ice and help them any way I can. I want to be a part of a team that has fun and brings home a championship at the same time! I'd also like to learn some more french, play lots of pond hockey with some local kids, jump off the roof of my billet family's house into the snow again, and go snowboarding! 98 BRADLEY INGERSOLL D.O.B.: Name of your favorite NHL player : My favorite hockey player is Pavel Datsyuk of the Detroit Red Wings. I like Pavel Datsyuk because he is a two way player. He looks to pass before he looks to make a shot. He back checks every play even if he falls. He has a very good work ethic and never gives up. Pavel is a big part in the Red Wings defense even though he is a forward. I wish to play like him in the Quebec tournament because he is such a good player. What is your goal (objective) by coming to the Pee Wee Tournament? : I want to play in the Quebec tournament because I think it will be a great experience and that I will gain a lot of confidence. I hope to gain a lot of independence from this also because I am staying with another family. I think that this will be a great time and that I will learn a lot. I think that on top of the fact that I am staying with another family the hockey will also be very good. This will be my second AAA tournament and hope to get a lot of experience and confidence out of the hockey. I want to play lots of good hockey but I am also looking forward to the fun stuff with the team. I am looking forward to getting to know kids from Raleigh and I think that it will be cool to know these kids and then play against them later in the season. I am looking forward to Quebec and I cannot wait to get to know all of the wonderful hockey players on our team. 12
PAUL STRAND (GM AND HEAD COACH) D.O.B. : Name of your favorite NHL player and why? : Over the years I have had many favorite players. I look for character, determination, pride, skill and integrity in a player. Mark Messier, Mario Lemieux, Pat Lafontaine, Steve Yzerman have always been players that I would love to watch and love to play like. Currently my favorite player is Scott Niedermeyer. He is the perfect hockey player. He comes to play each and every night. He is selfless and will adapt to any system his coaches wishes him to play. What is your goal (objective) by coming to the Pee Wee Tournament? : This will be my 5th time attending the pee-wee tournament as a coach or GM. I have been amazed each and every year by the level of play and the level of enjoyment the kids from Carolina have each and every season. We have had different goals each season, ranging from having fun to winning our bracket. The fun has proven a lot more easy to come by then the final victory. This season we will have the same goals. Bringing the kids to the Ste. Anne de Beaupre frozen water falls and extra time at the snow park will be the guarantees. As for the tournament, perhaps this will be the year. I am going to enjoy the games and watch the kids eyes wide with excitement as they see the crowd at Le Colisee. Hopefully it will be Sunday February 21 and the stands will be fans deep. BRIAN MEHM (ASSISTANT COACH) D.O.B. : Name of your favorite NHL player and why? : My favorite NHL player (sorry Alain) is Alexander Ovechkin because he plays like each shift is his last! What is your goal (objective) by coming to the Pee Wee Tournament? : On the ice, my goal is to help each player understand the importance of putting forth 100% effort every shift while remaining poised and confident. Off the ice, my goal is to do my part to ensure that all members of the Jr. Hurricanes family enjoy their experience in Quebec City to the fullest extent. The Junior Hurricanes program from coaches and players to parents, billets and families has built a reputation for embodying the true spirit of the Pee Wee Tournament, the Winter Carnival and the City of Quebec. My goal is to do my small part to help ensure that the tradition continues built on the foundation of class, humility, respect and family. This is not just a hockey tournament All members of this program are part of something bigger. 13
MITCH HODGKISS (ASSISTANT COACH) D.O.B.: Name of your favorite NHL player : Evgeni Malkin (Pittsburgh Penguins) What is your goal (objective) by coming to the Pee Wee Tournament? : This is my third year making the trip with the Jr. Hurricanes and I couldn't be more thrilled! My objectives are to assist the boys in appreciating the rich traditions of the city of Quebec and history of the International Peewee Tournament. This is an unbelievable experience which the boys will never forget. I also hope to compete at the highest level, while representing the Hurricanes organization with dignity and class. ALAIN DESFOSSÉS (LE CAPITAINE) D.O.B.: Name of your favorite NHL player : Current player Eric Staal (Carolina Hurricanes). All time favorite players : Peter Statsny (Québec Nordiques) & Ron Francis (Carolina Hurricanes) What is my goal (objective) as Billet Captain? : As Billet Captain of the JR Hurricanes for the 9th year, my goal has not changed yet since the beginning of my involvement with the JR Hurricanes in It is a great honor and privilege for the billeting families and I to have you in our town to participate to the biggest event at this level. I will try to give you the best I can to make sure that you, players, coaches and parents will leave our town with the greatest memories of your short passage and this, cannot be done without the help and support of the most nicest group of Billeting families.
