1 HOCKEY COACHNG JOURNAL HOCKEY COACHNG SYMPOSUM AT YORK UNVERSTY JUNE 2, 3, 4, 992 GRAHAM WSE - COACH, YORK UNVERSTY PENALTY KLLNG Rational for Penalty Killing Roughly one third of every game is played on the power play or shorthanded, therefore proper practice time should be allotted to these specialities Penalty killing is physically and strategically demanding and requires maximum concentration and effort to execute properly Solid penalty killing tactics and techniques will give confidence to your team An 8% success rate in killing penalties is an approximate target to obtain Example: York over the past five years 83%, 8%, 79%, 76%, 77% Penalty Killing Objectives Use aggressive, descriptive forechecking system 2 Use tough defensive play in the neutral zone 3 Use sound tactics in the defensive zone 4 Reduce opponents space and time to react in all zones with continuous movement 5 Force shots from the outside 6 Allow the goalie a clear view and clear rebounds 7 Avoid pics or getting 'tied up' 8 Create turnovers and maintain puck control 9 Go on the offensive should the occasion arise Attributes of a Penalty Killer be a quality skater with good quickness and agility be able to anticipate, make quick decisions and react be aggressive have various checking techniques ie: with the body, the stick, ability to angle and force be strong have excellent puck-handling ability be willing to block shots be able to win the majority of faceoffs

2 Tactics Page 2 be smart enough to know the physiological limitations and get off the ice ie: minute and off The tactics used depends on the opponents breakout system and their ability to execute it Also the abilities of your players to counter the opposition Finally, the time and score of the game OFFENSVE ZONE SYSTEMS One Player Short A) Stacked or "" Formation aggressive controlled Cycle or Force Same Side or Force & Press 2 One Man Force 3 Pick Up Wings B) Tandem Formation aggressive controlled Force Strong Side 2 Crisscross Swing 3 Pick Up Wings (deep or at blueline) C) Two Players Short aggressive controlled Swing Puck Side 2 Pick Up Wing Points to ponder in the offensive zone: First Forechecker Options: beat opponent to puck check opponent and puck force opponent out of the 'set-up' position - chase opponent aggressively - stop in front of net stay in a controlled position to force a pass - cover a certain player Second Forechecker Options: read and react to first forechecker go to offensive position if first forechecker controls puck

4 Page 4 Obtaining Puck Possession shoot puck to outside using glass or boards or 'flip' high out of zone win faceoffs use goaltender to provide play stoppages 'rag' puck in neutral or offensive zone le: requires quality puck handling turn puck back or delay in neutral or offensive zone keep spread out to allow passing in neutral and offensive zones Drills for Penalty Killing 4 or 3 on zero reacting to puck position, in defensive zone 2 Work 5 on 4 or 3 without sticks in defensive zone 3 Work 5 on 4 or 3 with sticks in defensive zone 4 Forecheck against power play breakout (5 on 4 or 3) 5 controlled power play/penalty killing scrimmage, work all zones ie: forechecking system, neutral zone play, defensive box, diamond or triangle 6 Power play/penalty killing scrimmage with faceoffs in all zones
