3 HISTORIC 100TH MEMORIAL CUP WRAPS UP IN REGINA The 100TH edition of the Mastercard Memorial Cup took place May in Regina. The tournament featured league champions from across the Canadian Hockey League s three (3) branches. Representing their respected leagues were the Ontario Hockey League s Hamilton Bulldogs, the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League s Acadie-Bathurst Titan, Western Hockey League s Swift Current Broncos and the host team, Regina Pats. The final day of the round-robin, the two (2) Saskatchewan based teams, Swift Current and Regina, were pitted against each other to determine which team would advance to the Semi-Final. Ultimately, it was Regina who outlasted the Broncos winning the game 6-5. Regina would move on to play Hamilton in the Semi-Final, knocking off the Ontario representatives by a score of 4-2. In the Championship game, the Regina Pats would fall to the highly talented Acadie Barthurst Titan by a score of 3-0. The Saskatchewan Hockey Association wishes to extend its gratitude to both the Swift Current Broncos and Regina Pats on a fantastic showing in the tournament and a strong season by both clubs. SHA TAKES PART IN MEMORIAL CUP FAN FEST The 100th Memorial Cup has concluded after a successful 10-day span in the Queen City. Away from the ice and outside of the Brandt Centre, many gathered at a variety of events which were held at various facilities located at Evraz Place including FanFest which was offered free to everyone families, kids, students, even the not-yet-a-hockey fan. The Saskatchewan Hockey Association (SHA) was pleased to be a part of the FanFest, more specifically the interactive zone which allowed all those interested, young and old, to grab a stick and try a shot, or jump in the live game on a makeshift playing surface no skates required. As part of the FanFest schedule, 2,500 students from the Regina area were bused to the event to take part in the activities including a visit to the SHA floor ball rink. In addition, the SHA wanted to make sure everyone stayed hydrated and electrolytes were replenished by hosting a Gatorade Hydration Station. At the conclusion of the Memorial Cup FanFest, a total of 918 litres of Gatorade was mixed and served to those who attended. 4 SASKATOON STARS COME UP SHORT DESPITE EXCEPTIONAL SEASON The Saskatoon Stars, out of the Saskatchewan Female Midget AAA Hockey League (SFMAAAHL) were handed their first lost of the 2018 post-season at the hands of the St. Albert Slash. The 2-1 loss came in the Esso Cup, Gold Medal game and signaled the end of a twenty-six (26) game winning streak, which included sixteen (16) post-season victories. For the Saskatoon Stars, it was third trip to the Esso Cup nationals in four years, whose previous best finish was a bronze medal. Finishing second at this year s Esso Cup was difficult for the team but Head Coach, Greg Slobodzian stated It is going to hurt for a while, but, at the end of the day, I feel the [team] represented the province extremely well. NOTRE DAME HOUNDS CLAIM TELUS CUP CHAMPIONSHIP The Notre Dame Hounds defeated the Cantonniers de Magog 5-1 in the 2018 Telus Cup final on April 29 in Sudbury, Ont. Luke Mylymok scored a hat trick and added an assist, and the Notre Dame Hounds won their history-making fifth national championship. The win also completed a perfect 20-0 postseason for Notre Dame, which went 9-0 to win the Saskatchewan Midget AAA Hockey League (SMAAAHL) championship, and won all four games at the West Regional before going seven-for-seven in northern Ontario. The Hounds became the first team to ever win five national titles and the first team to win all seven games in regulation at Canada s National Midget Championship since the Riverains du Richelieu in They also set the record for consecutive games without a loss at the tournament, at 22. 5 LEGACY OF 2017 HOCKEY CANADA GALA BENEFITS NORTHERN SASKATCHEWAN COMMUNITIES The 2017 Hockey Canada Foundation Gala & Golf Legacy which was hosted in Saskatoon last June is leaving a legacy in Saskatchewan. Four hockey initiatives in the province shared more than $300,000 to support the growth of the game and preserve its legacy. One of those initiatives was one led by the Saskatchewan Hockey Association (SHA) who used a large portion of the funding to travel to 11 northern communities where they hosted cross-ice jamborees for Initiation Program-aged (5- and 6-year-old) boys and girls. Those communities included JMRCC (La Ronge), Stanley Mission, Il-Le-Crosse, Buffalo Narrows, Montreal Lake, Pelican Narrows, La Loche, Turnor Lake, Pinehouse, Patuanak and Deschambault Lake. After the conclusion of each of the grassroots events the community received a donation of equipment including the special cross-ice bumpers, two small nets and 50 pucks while each of the 350 players who took part were also given their own jersey. The equipment was left to support age-appropriate programming moving forward. The Initiation age when children are first introduced to organized hockey at the ages of five and six years is an important time for the Saskatchewan Hockey Association to make a positive impression on the kids and their families. Targeting Initiation programming in northern communities means we re investing in those communities not only next season, but for seasons to come, said Kelly McClintock, General Manager of the SHA. Cross-ice hockey has been proven to be a key difference-maker for young kids who are first learning the game; it allows for more puck-touches, it shrinks the game to their size, and overall makes it a fun experience that keeps the boys and girls wanting to come back, he continued. We know that sport and the community and sense of purpose you get through sport participation can make a huge difference in the self-esteem and mental health of children and adults alike; working with northern communities we are looking to bring the gift of the game to more children at that key Initiation age. The cross-ice jamborees were a great success and many of those northern communities have already booked dates to host the grassroots event again next season. The SHA annually hosts the jamborees around the province, free of charge to all participants. In , more than 3,000 youngsters took part in the events. 6 THE CALL with TRENT CEY It is now safe to say the season has ended all championships have been handed out. The work continues for the SHA s Referee Division and many officials. There will be a handful of officials attending the WHL High Performance Officiating Exposure Camp this summer. Along with the WHL camp, there will be four Saskatchewan officials attending the NHL Exposure Combine in Buffalo, NY. Those include Cianna Lieffers, Michelle Stapleton, Troy Murray and Tarrington Wyonzek (who just finished linesing the semi final game at the Memorial Cup in Regina). Improvements to the supervision process including the forms as well as the clinic presentation and registration are in the works for next season and almost 100 per cent of the clinics for next season have been booked. Those who are looking to get involved with the Referee s division at the grassroots and elite level are encouraged to contact their Zone Coordinators and see what is the best way to give back to the program and help to continue to develop officials within the province. One thing officials can prepare for next season is that Criminal Record Checks will be required for all senior officials, mentors and instructors in the province. More information on this will be sent to the officials prior to clinic season to help with the transition. Finally, the deadline to apply for the Saskatchewan Officiating School of Excellence is quickly approaching for officials looking to get more elite mentorship and get some exposure to possible work some elite hockey including Bantam AA, Midget AA and Midget AAA next season. That is all for this month, we hope all officials can enjoy this time of year in their sandals instead of skates and we look forward to getting ready to go in September.
