NEWSLETTER Photo: 2015 Masters (50+) National Tournament Winners Wellington HockeyMen Association February 2016 Our Volunteer of the Month for January goes to Tawa Junior Club! Tawa Junior Club have successfully run the Small Sticks Summer League based at Elsdon turf this summer Photo: 2015 Masters Men (50+) National Tournament Winners with 41 teams participating, with Tawa Junior Club Chief Executive Update entering 32 of these teams The last quarter of 2015 resulted in a number of developments that will place WHA in themselves over the Oct-Feb good stead as we enter our 2016 season. Following a Special GM in late December, period. clubs voted in support of a new P1 competition structure and finals format; alongside a number of primary and secondary school competition changes. My sincere thanks to WELL DONE TAWA JUNIOR those of you who made the time to join the competition review committee and seeing CLUB for helping to make this important project through. I am confident that the changes introduced will lead to great hockey happen in the a more exciting and vibrant local competition for all involved. Wellington region! In a testing funding landscape, WHA is pleased to post a 24% increase in funding and sponsorship revenue in the 2015 fiscal year. This success was assisted by a number of positive developments in late 2015 including Sport Wellington providing additional funding to support coach development projects and renewed funding partnerships with the Wellington City Council and Synergy Health and Fitness Club to support our Capital Accelerator Programme (CAPS). With a number of high profile events now confirmed in Wellington (detailed on page 5), the opportunity to embed progressive competition structures and our intent to continue to expand our highly successful participation programmes has the potential to be a standout year. Wellington Hockey looks forward to working with our stakeholders to build on the success and hard work that has been put into last season & wishes all of our teams the very best as they prepare for the National Masters Tournament later this month. In This Issue: Programme Updates Facility Improvements 2016 Coach Appointments Blacksticks in Wellington Local Comp Changes New WHA Sponsors Sponsor Articles
High Performance Update 2016 Capital Coach Appointments: Following a robust recruitment process, Capital Hockey is delighted to announce the following Capital coach appointments for our 2016 season. NHL Women Head Coach Jason Hilton U21 Men Head Coach Dane Lett Assistant Coach Manoj Parbhu Manager Helen Manning U21 Women Head Coach Willie Schaefer Assistant Coach Melanie Aiken U18 Men Head Coach Nigel Pollock U18 Women Head Coach Kirsty Cole Capital Hockey will begin a second recruitment process shortly to appoint a 2016 Capital NHL Men s Coach. Capital Accelerator Programme (CAPS) Senior CAPs The Capital Hockey senior CAPS programme will see some further changes this season including more regular training sessions and the utilisation of local Capital high performance and guest coaches to lead the programme. This comprehensive programme offers our top athletes support through individual development plans, strength and conditioning (supported by Synergy Health and Fitness Centre), physical testing and quality on field sessions. It is expected that players selected for our senior CAPS programme will be U21 and NHL level players, who will likely represent Capital and press for NZ claims. Our Senior CAPs programme will commence later this month. Junior CAPs The 2016 season will see Capital Hockey introduce a full Junior (U18) performance programme, which will mirror our senior CAPs programme and include weekly training sessions and individual support (on and off the field), that is missed in a normal team environment. This programme is aimed at our top level U18 aged players who have the attributes to represent Capital and potentially reach higher honours. This programme will take a holistic approach with support in all areas required to become an elite level hockey player. The Junior CAPs will be delivered from February to August. Given the extent of the programme offered it is limited to 20 athletes in total. Capital U18 Men s Team - Naming Rights Sponsor Capital Hockey is delighted to announce its new sponsorship partnership with Mr Rental Wellington for the next two years. This sponsorship partnership includes naming rights sponsorship of the Capital U18 Men s Team and facility signage being displayed at the National Hockey Stadium. More information about Mr Rental Wellington can be found at: Mr Rental Wellington is based at: 175 Vivian Street, Te Aro, Wellington
Community Hockey Update Development Programmes Wellington Hockey Association has re-branded development programmes in the attempt to target a wider group of players. Ideally the changes adopted will make its easier for players and parents to understand what each programme is, who the programme is specifically catered for and what the goals/objectives are for each programme. Wellington Hockey believes this approach is a way to further develop and promote hockey in the Wellington region. Our new development programmes are as follows: Watch watch your skills soar Habit make perfection a habit Achieve achieve to represent These various programmes are designed to suit all players and abilities from ages 5 to 18 and aim to offer all players the opportunity to learn new (and strengthen existing) skills. Programmes will be delivered by a range of Wellington Hockey s top players, NZ age group representatives and guest coaches. The Summer Achieve and Watch programmes are underway at present, with our 2016 Summer Habit clinic commencing in March. For more information on any WHA development programmes please contact Jainesh Sukha: community.hockey@wellingtonhockey.org.nz or call the office Masters This year Wellington will be sending 9 (6 men s, 3 women s) teams to participate in the National Masters tournament which will be held in Nelson. The tournament will run from the 28 th February to the 5 th March. All teams have been training hard, and hopefully they will reap the benefits of this hard work by bringing home some medals! its Coach Appointments WHA this year have carried out a new selection process for representative coaches. Coaches were asked to fill out an application form, followed by an interview. The recommendations and notes from the interview were then sent to an independent panel for their recommendations. Following this selection process the following coaches have been successful; Hatch (U13A Boys): Jake Inwood Collier (U13A Girls): Eddie Forster U15 B Girls: Colette Mackenzie Assistant: Rachel Lilley U15 A Boys: Chuni Bhikha Senior National Women s: Reg Robinson Small Sticks in Schools & Renegade Hockey The WHA Small Sticks in Schools programme is about to get started in the next couple of weeks when schools go back for the 2016 year. This programme is a great way to introduce and develop hockey in schools in a fun and interactive environment. Wellington Hockey will provide this programme to over 35 schools this year, with more schools signing on. Renegade Hockey will also be getting underway as secondary schools are returning. Renegade hockey is a new style of hockey that is targeted at secondary school students. This style of hockey is played with a modified ball and stick and allows schools without the appropriate facilities, to play this modified version of hockey. Wellington Hockey will attempt to provide this programme to as many secondary schools in the Wellington region as possible this year. Summer Hockey Summer hockey has been well underway since last year and has seen 90 teams registered throughout the various grades and venues. It s great to see hockey being played in the sun.
Facilities Update Introducing Mark Nunn Mark Nunn joined the WHA team in December, 2015 as our new Facilities and Events Manager. Mark comes to Wellington Hockey following fourteen years as the Operations and Event Manager at the Wellington Regional Stadium and the Trust Arena in Auckland. Across these roles Mark has managed a number of international and national events including the 2011 Rugby World Cup; International 7s tournaments; numerous music concerts (Robbie Williams, ACDC and the Rolling Stones); and the PDC World Championships. To contact Mark please mark@wellingtonhockey.org.nz or call the Office: NHS 1 Dugouts WHA is pleased to announce that Wellington City Council have now signed off on the new Dugouts for NHS 1. After almost a year of design, redesign and consultation with stakeholders and designers, we have finally started fabrication of the frame off site with construction on site due to begin at the end of February. We would like to once again extend thanks to Neville Parker at Inside Designs, John Melhuish at Herriot and Melhuish Architecture Limited and Blair McAlpine of New Life Homes for their support with this project. We are also grateful for the $35,000 of funding support that has been collectively provided by the Lion Foundation, Four Winds and the Pelorus Trust. Without this support the replacement of our existing dugouts would simply not be possible. During this installation period (late February - early March) there will be contractors on site so please be careful. Also, the top car park will remain locked for the duration of onsite construction. Fraser Park Dugouts The existing NHS 1 dugouts will be relocated to Fraser Park in late February To accommodate the installation of these new dugouts piling work and fence adjustments will involve the turf being made unavailable at times. WHA expects these disruptions to be minimal and will endeavor to coordinate building works during normal business hours (9:00am 3:00pm). Thanks in advance for your cooperation as we complete this project. Facility Signage Wellington Hockey is pleased to announce the following new signage partnerships: Accountants Plus, The Lion Foundation, Pelorus Trust, Mr Rental Wellington, Synergy Health and Fitness Centre, GO Hockey (National Hockey Stadium) & New Life Homes (Elsdon Sports Park).
Facilities Update (Cont.) Upcoming Events at NHS Wellington is hosting three significant events this year; August 27th Capital NHL teams will play Central Men and Women before heading to National Tournament in Whangarei. 29th Aug 3rd Sept will see 32 Secondary School teams descend on the Wellington region to contend for the exclusive Rankin Cup and the India Shields showcasing the best of Secondary School boy s hockey in New Zealand. Lastly a very exciting Trans Tasman clash between the New Zealand Black Sticks Men and Women and Australia will be played at NHS in early November gearing up to be an amazing week of hockey with not only the senior teams showcasing their talent, but the hope that the U21 National teams will also be part of this event Local Competition Information After a comprehensive competition review was completed clubs and schools have voted on changes to the Open Grade, Secondary and Primary competitions that will see, amongst others, the following amendments brought in for this season. Open Grade; Premier One will now include 8 teams (an increase from 6) and have an age restriction of 15 years for players. Secondary; changes to playing days for most divisions (except P1 and R1), the removal of promotion/ relegation games (this is now automatic) and Wairapapa teams are now eligible to receive grading round trophies. Primary s main change is the introduction of Hub competitions and a revamp to simplify the rules. The 2016 season will kick off for Open Grade on Saturday April 2nd and Sunday April 3rd with the start of the grading round, while Secondary and Primary hockey competitions both start week one of term two. Watch this space for more information on the Primary Opening Festival - date to be confirmed. 6 Sponsors Section Prehabilitation How the Pro s reduce the risk of injury. As an athlete chances are at some time you ll incur an injury involving damage to, your back, groin, hamstrings or knee, often your physiotherapist or trainer will prescribe core stability exercises as part of your rehabilitation. Be prepared Prehabilitation, historically pre season training programs focused on building base cardio conditioning and working on general strength increases. Best practice for Pre Season conditioning now includes a more Prehabilitative component, a strategy used to reduce the risk of the strains, tears & pulls that effect our performance. An integral component of any preseason will be core conditioning. There are three major groups of core conditioning exercises: exercises focusing on getting the small deep-lying stabilising muscles to work properly. static bodyweight exercises that concentrate on developing stability and/or strength endurance in certain postures. traditional dynamic strength exercises for the main movement muscles of the trunk, often performed on the floor or Swiss ball. Your current program probably has 3 or 4 basic core exercises included which is a good start. However. There are 2 real limitations. The first is behavioural. Core exercises can quickly become boring, it takes self-discipline to do minutes of the same exercises three or more times a week over a long period. The second limitation is physiological, normal key training principles of specificity and progression apply in the same way that they do to any other aspect of physical fitness. If staying injury free is important to you this season visit our website and download any or all of our free Core Training plans there s three loaded now with over 12 static and dynamic exercises that can all be done at home. Check out for more information.
