The only blemishes during that time were the loss to Cornell on February 28, 2004, a 1-6 loss to #1 Hopkins on March 1, 2004, a 12-6 Towson loss on April 17, 2004, and a 12-7 loss to Massachusetts on February 26, PRIDE COACH JOHN DANOWSKI - John Danowski, who is in his 20th season at Hofstra, is the head coach of the Pride. The list is just an early season indicator of who to watch for during the 2005 season. The list will be narrowed down to five finalists by the end of the year with the award presented following the season. The list is composed of 7 players, 5 of which are from Division I schools. The Tewaaraton Trophy honors the top male and female varsity collegiate lacrosse player in the United States. Hofstra alumnus Doug Shanahan captured the first Tewaaraton Trophy in Moyer, a junior defender from Ridley Park, Pennsylvania, is a 2005 Face-Off Yearbook and Inside Lacrosse Preseason All- American after being named a USILA Division I All-America honorable mention and an All-Colonial Athletic Association first team selection last season. Moyer picked up four ground balls at Brown, three against Massachusetts and two against Hopkins. He also scored his first goal of his college career last week against Johns Hopkins. More on Moyer... - Moyer led the team in ground balls with 58 last season. - He picked up a career-high 12 ground balls against Sacred Heart on April 7, He also assisted on the goal that tied the contest at 11. IANUCCI - Sophomore attackman Athan Ianucci returned to the Hofstra line-up against Brown on March 5th after missing the season opener against UMass. Ianucci assisted on Ryan Vilar s goal against the Bears and scored his first goal of the season at Hopkins last week. - Ianucci was named to the All-CAA Tournament Team last May. - Ianucci opened the 2004 season with nine goals in his first six games. - Ianucci set a career-high with four goals and also tied a career-best with five points at Notre Dame on March 24, Ianucci posted five points on three goals and two assists against Binghamton on March 8, He had a goal and an assist against the Greyhounds of Loyola. - For his efforts in the Hofstra victories over Loyola and Binghamton he was named the CAA Rookie of the Week for March 9, Ianucci had an impressive college debut on February 28, 2004 with one goal and three assists against Cornell. GOALIE MATT SOUTHARD - Junior goalie Matt Southard has opened the 2005 season with double-digit saves in all three games. He posted 16 saves against Massachusetts, 11 saves at Brown and 10 at Johns Hopkins. - He posted double-digit saves in 10 of 14 games last season. The only four games in which he didn t post double digit saves were Sacred Heart (), Drexel (8), Stony Brook (6) and Towson (). - Southard posted 162 saves in 2004 for a.526 save percentage. - Southard recorded career high saves on consecutive weekends last season. He recorded a career-high 18 saves in Hofstra s 9-8 victory over Loyola on March 6, A week later against Johns Hopkins, Southard posted 19 saves. On February 1, 2005, the Hofstra wrestling team hosted the #1- ranked Oklahoma State Cowboys. The JHU game was the Hofstra lacrosse programs fourth contest against a number one ranked opponent. Three (1995, 2004, 2005) of the four games were against Hopkins. The fourth was against Syracuse in : The Pride has opened the season with three straight losses for only the fifth time in school history. In two of those seasons (1978 and 2001) Hofstra earned NCAA Tournament bids. Morris, a junior All-American, tied his career high with five points and set a career-high with four goals, Senior Jeff Zywicki also tallied five points for the Minutemen with three goals and two assists, The Pride got on the board first as Keysor scored an unassisted goal 4:11 into the contest. But UMass responded with five straight goals to take a 5-1 lead :09 into the second quarter. Morris had the third and fourth goals in the run and Zywicki added two assists. But Hofstra replied with three unanswered goals in the next seven minutes of the second quarter, as Tim Treubig, Ryan Vilar and Chris Unterstein dented the twine, to close to 5-4. It was Morris' third goal of the period for the Minutemen with : left in the half that gave UMass a 6-4 halftime lead and started a 4-0 run that put the game out of reach. Zywicki scored 1:51 into the third for UMass followed by unassisted goals by Brian Jacovina and Chris Doyle that boosted the Minutemen lead to 9-5 with 5:09 to play in the third. After Hofstra's Tim Treubig and Zywicki exchanged goals, the Pride responded with back-to-back goals by Keysor to close to within three at 10-7 with 7:15 to play. But that was all that Hofstra would get as Zywicki and Moris closed the door on the Pride with goals in the final 2:20 to post the victory. The Bears jumped out to a 2-0 lead on two man-up goals as Woodson scored at the 4:7 mark and Dave Madiera made it 2-0 five minutes later. But the Pride got on the board with 1:49 to play in the first as junior attackman John Keysor came around the goal and beat Brown goalie Chandler Clarke. But Brown would score the next four goals, including two in the second quarter, to take a 6-1 lead seven minutes into the third quarter. In the second period, Britton Derkac and Madiera tallied goals while Chris Mucciolo, who had two goals and one assist on the day, and Alex Buckley added third quarter tallies. After Hofstra senior Ryan Vilar scored off a pass from Athan Ianucci on an extraman opportunity with 4:19 to play in the third to cut the deficit to 6-2, Brown once again went on a four-goal run to seal the contest. Brown picked up 48 ground balls to Hofstra s 28 and captured 11 of the 16 face-offs. Hofstra junior midfielder Tim Treubig led the Pride with two goals and one assist while junior goalie Matt Southard posted 10 saves. The Blue Jays jumped out to a 2-0 lead after one period as Barrie scored his second goal of the year just :10 into the contest. Just two minutes later Peter LeSueur scored his second goal of the year to make it 2-0. But Hofstra closed the gap 2:28 into the second quarter as sophomore Athan Ianucci scored his first goal of the year on a low bullet that beat Hopkins goalie Jesse Schwartzman. Tim Treubig assisted on the goal. Joe Benson scored his first goal of the year for Hopkins four minutes later off a pass from Greg Peyser to make it -1. But Hofstra defender Brett Moyer scored the first goal of his career, off a pass from John Orsen, with 7:1 to play in the half to close the deficit to -2. Benson and Peyser then scored 50 seconds apart to boost the Blue Jays' lead to 5-2. It was Peyser's fifth goal of the season. Treubig sent the Pride into the locker room at halftime down by two with his third goal of the season on a wrap-around. The Pride scored three times in the first half on just seven shots while Southard stopped seven shots in the Hofstra cage. Kyle Barrie and Kyle Harrison scored unassisted goals for Hopkins in the first five minutes of the third quarter to boost the Blue Jays lead to 7-. But Treubig scored his second of the game and fourth of the season with 7:15 to play in the period off a pass from Rob Bonaguro, and John Keysor posted his fifth of the year with 10 seconds to play in the quarter to close the deficit to 7-5 after three periods. Although the Pride had their chances, the fourth quarter was all Hopkins as the Blue Jays scored four unanswered goals as Greg Peyser, Benson, Stephen Peyser and Kevin Huntley put the game out of reach.
