2 4-H Council Chautauqua County 4-H Council will be at the Methodist Church in Wauneta on May 11, 2016 at 7:00 pm. Topics include Spring Livestock Show, fairbook ads, junior superintendent for the fair, educational event at the fair, and other fair decisions. Premium Sale Committee Meeting On May 5th at 6:00pm in the County Commissioners Meeting Room on the 2nd floor of the Courthouse the Premium Sale Committee will meet. Everyone is invited to join this meeting and sign up to be on the committee. Current members are Becky Williams, Amy Goode, Damon Snyder, Logan Underwood, Dean Wolfe, Randy Clark, Sonny Williams, Donnie Underwood, Jimmie Snyder and Lana Williams. Premium Sale Requirements It is required that youth wishing to sell animals in the Premium Sale at the fair this summer complete at least three educational events or livestock activities. These may be Rolling Prairie livestock events, out of district spring shows and/or livestock judging contests, and other events. If you are not sure if an event will count ask Jenny prior to attending to get verification. Also, it is your responsibility to notify the office what events you attended and/or participated in order to receive credit for them. Local club events or project meetings are not the only activities that were meant to count toward the requirement. We want you to attend both in and out of district events for the requirement. Multi-County Dog Show Entries are now available for the Multi-County Dog Show in Fredonia at the Wilson County Fairgrounds on Saturday, June 11, at 8:00 am. Entries are due by June 12 to the Wilson County Extension Office. For more information or entry forms and rules, contact Jenny. This is the dog show for Rolling Prairie 4-H ers to participate in because there will not be a dog show at the County Fair. Favorite Food Show Chautauqua County Favorite Food Show will be Monday, June 6, :30 p.m. at the 4-H Building Sedan Fairgrounds. The Favorite Food Show is an exhibit and contest to encourage 4-H ers to learn about meal planning, food preparation, and presentation. A Favorite Food is chosen, one the 4-H er likes and likes to prepare. A menu is planned with the food, and the table decor is coordinated. Foods chosen may be main courses, desserts, snacks, breads, casseroles or other. A recipe card and a menu card should be displayed with the proper table setting. The 4-H er will visit informally with the judge and tell how to prepare and serve the food, why they selected the table service and dishes, and why the centerpiece is appropriate. The 4-H er should also know some of the nutritional value of the food and be able to discuss that with the judge. This is a creative and fun event for 4-H ers. There are no hard and fast rules. For more information or to sign up contact the Extension Office. Deadline to sign up is June 3rd. Coffeyville International Fair & Rodeo Nomination forms must be completed and postmarked by May 15, Please enclose at least 40 hairs pulled with follicles intact. 5 State Livestock Nominations Listed below is information about the 2016 State Livestock Nominations: Animals eligible for KJLS or KSF will need an EID ear tag placed in the ear of the animal by an Agent or in the presence of the Agent. This is so all tags can be accounted for. Make arrangements with Jenny to tag and nominate animals if you have animals that were not tagged at the county spring dates. The exception to this is purebred breeding females that have registration papers do not have to be nominated. (except meat goats) DNA hair samples are required for each nominated animal for ALL species. Ear notch information will be required for swine nominations as well as the DNA sample. Scrapie tag numbers will be required for sheep and goat nominations as well as the DNA sample. Declaration forms, nomination forms are required as well. These must be signed by the parent/legal guardian, and Extension Agent. Nomination deadlines for all species are POSTMARK dates. Certified mail is highly encouraged for sending nominations to KSU. Nomination dates are: May 2 - Market Beef; June 15 - Market Hogs, Commercial Gilts, Market Sheep, Commercial Ewes, Commercial Heifers, and ALL meat goats. Nomination cost is $8.00/animal. All swine exhibitors must submit a valid Youth PQA Plus certification number by June 15. A livestock nomination is NOT AN ENTRY for the Kansas State Fair or Kansas Junior Livestock Show. All forms (except DNA envelopes) and a Kansas Youth Livestock State Nomination Process Rookie Guide are available at: edu/students-and-programs/youthprograms/ nominated-livestock/ Bucket Calf Project The Bucket Calf project is designed to introduce youth up to 12 years of age to beef and dairy 4-H projects. By giving younger children the experience of working with a smaller, less intimidating animal, they become comfortable with cattle as they grow. Purposes of the project are: 1. To design a cattle project to fit the physical size and maturity level of younger youths. 2. To teach proper health care and nutritional requirements of young cattle. 3. To teach basic beef management skills without a large investment. 4. To teach basic record keeping skills. 5. To provide a better understanding of the feeder cattle industry. A bucket calf is an orphan or newborn calf purchased within two weeks of birth. The calves may be male or female; dairy, beef or cross; and fed on a bottle (or bucket) and nipple. Calves should be owned at least 90 days prior to the fair. Bucket Calf classes at the fair are judged by conference method based on: 1. What 4-H er learned about caring for and raising the calf? 2. Fitting and showing according to either beef or dairy guidelines, with emphasis on how much the 4-H er learned and can do without help. However, parental guidance is encouraged. 3. The general health of calf and knowledge of 4-H er in health related areas. 4. Dairy or beef quality IS NOT CONSIDERED! It is what the member has learned, not the quality of the calf that is important. Since the purpose of the bucket calf project is to introduce younger members to caring for and showing cattle on a smaller basis, once a member begins showing market beef or breeding heifers, they should not be exhibiting bucket calves as well. NOTE: Bucket calves do not require a 4-H ear tag!
