Pictured above is the Greene County 4-H Youth Council Officers and Club Officers being inducted into their offices at the first ever Achievement Night held on February 21st at the Greene County Senior Center. These officers have and will work hard to instill the values of 4-H in our county program and will be great representatives for 4-H! The evening started with a welcome and recognition of special guests from Shenile Ford, County Extension Director then PT Harrison led the group in the American Pledge and the 4-H pledge while the Go Getters Too officers, Parker Harris and Jenifer Mitchell presented the American and 4-H flag. - Greene County 4-H on North Carolina State University and North Carolina A&T State University commit themselves to positive action to secure equal opportunity regardless of race, color, creed, national origin, religion, sex, age, veteran status or disability. In addition, the two Universities welcome all persons without regard to sexual orientation. 2 Page 2 4-H is community youth program that develops leaders through innovative service projects, adult relationships, and volunteer opportunities. Greene County Clovers 4-H Club Trevonte Ham shared a thought for the evening and then Mrs. Sharon Harrison led the blessing that opened the invitation for the meal. Dinner consisted of salad, pasta with meatballs, bread and beverages. Thank you to all the club members and parents who supplied the desserts for the meal! They were all delicious and very much appreciated. The awards program began after dinner and our youth were recognized for achievements in Health Rocks, Greene Chicks, Citizenship Focus, Wildlife District Hunter Education Skills Tournament, and Presentations. All club members who were in attendance received a club member certificate for their club membership while the volunteers were acknowledged for their contributions to 4-H in The Club Leaders and Co-leaders were recognized and awarded (pictured below) for their hard work and dedication in 2012 and for the upcoming year. Without this group of people, Greene County 4-H would not be the great program it is today! THANK YOU to all who made 2012 a great year and lets strive to make 2013 an even better year! 2013 achievements for youth to strive for include club Perfect Attendance, 4-H Spirit Award, Project Book Winners, Achievement Plans and more! So talk with your club leader on how you can get involved! How to be a 4-H Member? To Make the Best Better 4-H is one of the only youth organizations that membership is FREE for all youth! Youth, ages 5-18 (as of January 1), become members by completing a 4-H member enrollment form, medical form and read the 4-H Code of Conduct. These forms must be updated every year. If you have been a 4-H member in the past and would like to continue, please go to greene then look on the left menu bar for 4-H Youth Development, click here and scroll down to print off these forms. Or you can contact Emily Herring and we will mail you the forms to return to us. These forms are mandatory for ALL 4-H events and activities. Greene County 4- H

3 Volume 2, Issue 2 4-H Club Corner Up Date on Clubs Horse Club We are still in the process of looking for another adult Club Leader for a horse club. If interested in changing youth s lives through the 4-H horse program please contact Emily Herring at Cloverbud Club This is a special 4-H club for ages 5-8, as of January 1st. This is a great club to start your child into the Greene County 4-H program. The Cloverbud Club is off to a great start with the membership of 14 youth! They have began their first club project of raising cabbage plants! Greene County Clovers- This club is for ages 5-18 and they have reached their maximum capacity! They will meet March 5th & 12th at the Community Page 3 Building in Hookerton at 6:30pm. This month they will be traveling to visit a local dairy farm. Go Getters Too! Club Meets the last Monday of the month at from 3:30-4:30pm at the Senior Center and is looking for more members to join. This month they will be working on getting ready for 4-H Presentations. The Wildlife Team Will be competing at the Spring NC Wildlife Resource Commission Hunter Education Skills District Tournament on March 9th at Castle Hayne. Be sure to wish them luck! The more youth & adults that participate in 4-H clubs the more impact the 4-H program can have on the county to make a difference in these children's lives. Join the Revolution of Responsibility TODAY! Public Speaking Workshops Come learn the skills needed to speak in audiences at this series of workshops for youth of all ages! Members don t have to be a 4-H er to participate. This is a great way to get prepared for that senior project or that big presentation in class. Participants have the option in participating in the 4-H presentation contests for awards and practice of their skills. Interested participants must attend both workshops, County Activity Day on April 3rd and District Activity Day on April 27th. Topics youth can speak on can be ANYTHING they deem interesting. Presentations, demonstrations, persuasive speeches have to be between 5-12 minutes depending on the age and category of the participant. And they can present in teams of two. Public speaking is one of the most popular phobias of adults, but one of the most necessary skills of leaders. Don t let it be one of the fears of your child(ren) too! Get them involved early! 4 Page 4 Greene Chicks 2013 Contact Emily Herring for more information or go to u/greene. Click on 4-H Youth Development on left hand side. This unique, new 4-H program is taking off just in time for Easter! Greene County 4-H is looking for parents of youth interested in getting their child(ren) involved in a project to get them started in 4-H. This is an opportunity for parents of interested youth to take home two free chicks per child and allow the children to feed, water to help teach responsibility. Below are the specifics of the 4-H Greene Chick program. Register by Wednesday, March 14th at with Emily. Then attend a mandatory orientation meeting with a question and answer session on March 21st from 5:30-6:30pm at the Senior Center. Registration forms and additional information will be given out at this time. Chicks will need to be picked up on Thursday, March 28th from Greene County Extension Office, between 3-5pm. A Project Record Book will be given out at time of pick up and it must be completed by youth and returned in the fall before showing. Youth must participate at the Greene County 4-H Rabbit & Chicken Show with donated chicken in the fall. After the show, if youth/parents don t want to keep chicken(s) it can be returned. But offer is only good day of show. Open to youth ages 3-18 Distribution of chicks will be on a first come first serve basis, based on registration between March 1st-14th. Parents are responsible for all feed, water and necessary supplies. If chickens die or are given away, consult with Emily to keep you from being disqualified for next years Greene Chick Program. Chicks are not sexed, therefore there is a 50/50 chance of getting roosters and hens. Contact Emily Herring at to register your child for the Greene Chicks Program or to simply get a better understanding of the program. 4-H Summer Camp Time Again! Greene County 4- H This year we will be taking only 8 youth, ages 8-14 to 4-H Summer Camp during the week of July 21st-26th to the Eastern 4-H Center. Transportation, lodging, all meals, program costs, and camp t-shirt are included in the $400 cost for this week of fun! Scholarships are available. Monthly payments are available to those who need it. Application and non-refundable deposit of $75 is due per camper asap to become registered. Spaces are filled on a first come, first serve basis so be sure to get yours in today!

ALL 4-H club members from ALL of our Greene County 4-H Clubs are invited to come and indulge in exciting games, fun activities, and delicious food. We hope to see 100% participation from all clubs and want each club member to bring a friend (and their parents)! During this club day club members will be displaying their club pride in mini competitions, play team games and fellowship with other 4-H ers from Greene County. Location is to be determined but SAVE THE DATE! Admission is to bring either pet food or needed items for the Greene County Animal Shelter.
