1 FLORIDA JUNIOR HIGH SCHOOL RODEO ASSOCIATION GENERAL INFORMATION AND GROUND RULES These ground rules are very important. Please read thoroughly. It is every member s responsibility to know the ground rules as well as the rules of the National High School Rodeo Association s rulebook. Any rule not covered in these ground rules can be found in the NHSRA rulebook. Membership and Fundraising: The membership fees for are $ and are required to be paid upon joining the FJHSRA. This includes NHSRA Jr High Division membership dues, NHSRA Times and Western Horseman subscription dues, contestant insurance, contestant state membership dues, and family membership dues. Our primary fundraising campaign is for each member to collect $ in advertising to be placed in our ad book towards the end of the year. This can come from family members, friends, or the business community. This is a great way to honor the efforts of our members. The money for the ads is due at check in prior to the start of the February rodeo. If funds are not paid by this date, contestant cannot continue to rodeo until their advertising funds are paid in full. Fundraising activities will be announced soon. Members who join the FJHSRA after mandatory fundraisers have been completed will be required to pay an application fee that includes the cost of those fundraisers. Please make checks payable to FJHSRA. Failure to have money turned in by due dates will result contestant not being able to rodeo until fundraisers are paid and rodeo fees. Rodeo Call In: Call in number is (Amy Brown) Regular call in for the rodeos will be on the Monday 2 weeks before the rodeo, unless otherwise specified on the website or Facebook. Check website and Facebook for important potential changes. Open call in will begin at 7pm and will end at 9 pm EST. Late call in will be the next day between 8 am and 9 am EST. There will be a $100 fee for late call in. If you cannot call in yourself, it is your responsibility to have someone call in for you. Each contestant can call in themselves and 2 other contestants. There will be a onetime call in. Once member calls in they are entered in all rodeos until member calls out or calls to make changes to their entry. If a member does not call out of a rodeo BY THE WEDNESDAY BEFOR THE RODEO, they are still responsible for the fees of the missed rodeo. After the missed rodeo and non-payment of fees, member will be taken off the entry list and must call back in at the designated time for the next rodeo contestant plans to attend. When call in is over, it is over. No exceptions! Grade Requirements All Junior High Division contestants must turn in a report card, transcript, or certified teacher s testing results (for home school members) from last year to prove enrollment. You must turn in a copy of your report card directly to the Report Card Secretary at the November 2018, February 2019 and your latest report card at the state finals rodeos.

Following your 1 rodeo suspension, a signed, sealed progress report or report card which reflects a 2.0 GPA, must be presented to the Report Card Secretary to be eligible to compete again. It is your responsibility to make sure the Report Card Secretary has received your report card. If you have questions, please contact Sonja Crawford, Dress Code and Back Numbers: When required, members, directors, officers, and helpers must be in complete western attire, approved pants, hat, boots (which must have a heel and cannot be riding sneakers), belt, and long sleeve western shirt. Contestants may remove their belt while competing in their event, but it must be on at all other times. All shirts must have a collar. Shirt sleeves are to be worn rolled down (see NHSRA rulebook for exceptions for this rule). Girls wearing low rise jeans must make sure shirts stay tucked in. Each contestant will be given a back number at the first rodeo they attend. Back numbers must be worn on their back at all times, even in travel to and from the rodeo. DO NOT loan your back number to anyone else. If you lose your back number, you may purchase a replacement back number for $5.00 from the State Secretary. All points will be carried into the State Finals. The State Finals will consist of 2 go rounds and an average. The top 4 in each event, after the State Finals, will get to compete at the National Finals, with the exception of team roping and ribbon roping. Please see Team Roping and Ribbon Roping to determine the top 4 teams to compete at Nationals. All Around Cowboy and Cowgirl will be determined for the year by the total points earned in all events, plus points earned at State Finals, regardless of whether they have entered those events in the State Finals, provided they have earned their State Finals. All Events/Ties and Tie Breakers: FJHSRA will be following the NHSRA rulebook. Please refer to the NHSRA rulebook or ask a Director if you have any questions regarding a rule. A contestant has a 30 second time limit to compete. The time is to start at the judge s discretion, at his second call. All chain, metal, and wire tie downs, nose bands, and bosals must be covered. All ties will be handled as follows: Points for the two placings will be added together and split evenly among the contestants that tied. All State Finals Ties will be handled as follows: Points for the tied placings will be added together and split evenly among the contestants that tied. The Board of Directors will decide how tie breakers are to be handled prior to the State Finals commencing. Rough Stock: A safety vest, helmet, and mouthpiece are to be worn in all rough stock events. No exceptions. Please see the NHSRA rulebook regarding this rule. There will be a spot check on rough stock riggings. You will not be able to perform in rough stock riggings that do not conform to NHSRA
4 standards. Bareback Steer Riding and Saddle Bronc Steer Riding are considered rough stock. A qualified ride in the Bull Riding consists of 8 seconds. A qualified ride in the Bareback Steer Riding and Saddle Bronc Steer Riding consists of 6 seconds. Team Roping: Contestants will be allowed 3 loops in team roping with a 30 second time limit. This will apply in all state rodeos. If your partner fails to show up or is injured and cannot compete in the team roping a draw partner from the team roping event will be made for you. Each contestant in team roping will receive individual points earned of the same value as contestants in other events. Partner s points will be added together to form a team at the State Finals. End of the year champions will be the high point header and heeler. If either partner is disqualified at the State Finals, both contestants are out of the team roping. Please refer to the NHSRA rulebook. If the front foot is in the loop when the header dallies, turns off, and changes direction of the steer, there will be an automatic NO TIME. Ribbon Roping: Contestants will be allowed 1 loop in the ribbon roping with a 30 second time limit. This will apply at all state rodeos. Any catch is legal, catch as catch can rule. Rope must hold calf until roper gets his hand on calf. Each contestant in ribbon roping will receive individual points earned of the same value as contestants in other events. Partner s points will be added together to form a team at the State Finals. E d of the year champions will be the high point roper and runner. If your partner fails to show up or is injured and cannot compete in the ribbon roping a draw partner from the ribbon roping event will be made for you. This is a boy/girl event. Either a boy or girl can rope. Girl s/boy s Breakaway: Contestants will be allowed 2 loops in breakaway. If contestant intends to use 2 loops, they must carry 2 loops. The calf s head must pass through the loop. Boys who compete in breakaway are not allowed to tie-down. Tie-down: Contestants will be allowed 2 loops in tie-down. If contestant intends to use 2 loops, they must carry 2 loops. No rebuilds. Neck rope must be used. Any catch is legal, catch as catch can rule. Rope must hold calf until roper gets his hand on calf. There will be a 30 second time limit at all state rodeos. Chute Doggin : Dogger must keep right hand in front of or behind shoulder until the steer crosses the score line. Girl s/boy s Goat Tying: Arena help will not catch the contestant s horse until the flag has been dropped.
5 Goats will be divided by the number of contestants. The goats will remain on the stake for the number of runs that is necessary. (Ex: If there are 40 contestants and 10 goats, then each goat will go 4 times in a row.) Barrel Racing and Pole Bending: Drags will be determined by the management of the rodeo, which consists of the Event Director, judges, Arena Director, National Director, and host committee representative. Following these events, the pattern will be dragged or leveled. Turn Out Rule: The call-in secretary must be notified of turn out 24 hours prior to the first performance. Any contestant that turns out without giving notice from an event, without visible injury to themselves or their horse must pay all of their entry fees for that rodeo. An additional turn out fee of $25.00 per event of said rodeo must be paid. If notification of turnout is given, the entry fees will be assessed for that rodeo. The PRCA rule concerning this will be followed with the exception of the out time pertaining to entering subsequent rodeos. A contestant or horse with a visible injury may turn out at any event, at a rodeo, without a doctor s and or veterinarian s written excuse provided notification of such turn out is approved by 2 Board of Directors at that rodeo and the rodeo secretary is notified. Once you have called in for a rodeo, you are considered entered. Failure to attend will result in the above fees and penalties, unless complied as outlined above. Any dues, fees, or penalties associated with turn out must be paid prior to competing in subsequent rodeos. In addition, refer to the NHSRA rulebook. State Finals: All events, except barrels and poles will be run from last qualifying position down to the first qualifying position in all go rounds. Barrels and poles will be drawn for the first go round and reversed for the second go round. Contestant must have 1 point in an event to qualify to compete in that event at State Finals. Contestant s most current report card will be checked for qualification prior to the State Finals. Contestant must maintain a 2.0 GPA to be eligible to compete at the State Finals. Contestant must compete in at least 4 qualifying rodeos, in the particular event they want to qualify for state finals in. Finals packets, along with contestant s most recent report card, must be mailed in prior to State Finals. Postmarked deadline will be posted on the website and Facebook page. Awards and travel money will not be guaranteed. Awards and travel money will be based on the financial stability of the association. All members will be given a NHSRA rulebook at the first rodeo they attend. FJHSRA will follow the NHSRA rules. If a member is disqualified for breaking any of the ground rules or rules listed in the NHSRA rulebook, the member is entitled to a hearing before the Board of Directors. Please feel free to contact any of the Directors or Officers of the FJHSRA with any questions or problems you may have. FJHSRA Directors, Officers, and Secretaries are volunteering their time to help make the FJHSRA a great organization. We are hoping the FJHSRA will better prepare you for the next level of High School rodeo. We wish all members good luck and safety this year. We are all looking forward to a great rodeo season.
