1 WRIGHT COUNTY EXTENSION 4-H FAMILY NEWSLETTER Jessica Norman WRIGHT COUNTY EXTENSION County Youth Coordinator office cell May 2016 WHAT S INSIDE: Fair Entries 4-H ers for 4-H Graduating 4-H ers Camps May 15 info Animal & Fair information Project meetings Pinterest info Fair info Calendar Summer is right around the corner, and before we know it we will be at the County Fair! Make sure to mark your calendar with important dates and deadlines within this newsletter. I have not seen fair books yet, but when they come in we will let leaders know. One fair book is given per-family and this comes from your club leader. Wright County 4-H shirts are available at the Extension office, these are the green ones with the white print. Remember all 4-H youth need to wear a 4- H shirt during judging times at fairs. Reminder: Just because you verified an animal for fair (county or state) does NOT mean that it is a fair entry. The entry is the second step and for county this is done on paper and a fee paid at my office by June 10th. For the state fair entry process, that needs to be done by July 1 and this is done online. State Fair books and entry forms will be on the web. If you have questions please make sure to ask. Photo on this page: With Environmental Agricultural Days starting on Monday May 2, I decided to use the picture from last year. Those in the picture are a few of the presenters over the past 20 years. This is year 21. Making the Best Better! Jessica Norman We have a Facebook page! Visit us today! STATEWIDE THEMED CAMPS For more than 100 years, 4-H has helped youth discover and foster a passion for science, engineering, technology and math (STEM) but has done it in context to enhance youth citizenship, leadership, the arts, communication and healthy living. 4-H Mission: 4-H empowers youth to reach their full potential through youth and adult partnerships and research-based experiences. Adventures in nature are only part of the experience young people will have at our 4 or 5-night 4 -H STEM Summer Camps. 4-H STEM camps offer a hands-on approach to developing the excitement and skills necessary for youth to succeed in a safe and fun setting. The 4-H camp program starts youth on the path to becoming informed citizens and the next generation of scientists and engineers we need for our communities to thrive. Using our research-based Experiential Learning Model in a safe outdoor setting allows youth to connect what they are learning to their daily lives. NEW YOUTH PROGRAM SPECIALISTS Dr. Melissa Voigt has been hired to join the North Youth Program Specialist field team with primary responsibilities for Hardin, Hamilton, Wright, Webster and Humboldt counties. She started on April 11, 2016 and with her office located in the Humboldt County office in Humboldt, IA. Dr. Voigt received her PhD from the Department of Youth Development and Agricultural Education at Purdue University. Her prior work experience includes serving as an E-Learning and curriculum development specialist. Under her leadership within Indiana 4 -H, the Horse and Pony project areas expanded by engaging diverse audiences in high quality immersion experiences. Dr. Melissa Voigt is an accomplished presenter, writer, teacher, and researcher with topical emphasis upon learner centered experiences, online learning groups, career readiness skill development, and youth/animal behavior and wellbeing in equine science. IOWA STATE FAIR 4-H HORTICULTURE SHOW A reminder that an animal may be identified by only one youth. Animals identified as part of the 4-H project CANNOT also be identified or exhibited as an FFA project or vice versa. Youth however may identify separate animals in the same division. For example, a youth may ID market lambs A, B and C in 4-H, and market lambs D, E and F in FFA, or horses A and B in 4-H and horses C and D in FFA. When exhibiting the youth may only exhibit under 4-H or FFA at a county/state fairs. So the youth may show market lambs A, B, and C that have been ID under 4-H at the Wright County fair under 4-H, then show market lambs D, E, and F that have been nominated under FFA at the State Fair under FFA. If youth wanted to exhibit lambs under both organizations at the State Fair or even county, then the youth would need to exhibit Market under organization and breeding under the other organization. This would be the only way for the youth to exhibit lambs under both FFA and 4-H at the county fair. There are some animals that the youth can only exhibit at a fair under one organization. MISSION STATEMENT 4-H EMPOWERS YOUTH TO REACH THEIR FULL POTENTIAL WORKING
